When I was young, when my world was young, the R.L. Winston Rod Company at 475 3rd St was the only complete and long lasting fly shop in San Francisco. Roos Atkins on Market, Sullivans out in the Avenues, Abercrombie & Fitch of Post, and Eddie Bauer in the Financial among others came and went. Winston would move up to Montana in 1975.
Then there were none. Until now.
George Revels Lost Coast Outfitters, a short cast away from the old Winston shop is a wonderful reincarnation of the Winston shop from long ago.
You won't find rubber waders, you won't find wicker creels, fly lines that required daily dressings, canvas duck clothing, coffee grinder fly reels, genuine cat gut silk leaders or the fragrance of moth ball trout flies, thats passé.
You will find bamboo rods though, good ones, not the vintage rods that clung together with animal glues, but new ones with space age resins and fine fittings. You"ll also find featherlight fly reels, high quality fly rods (a free lesson form George, a national casting champion with each purchase) ultra light clothing, useful angling literature and accouterments from the finest purveyors in the land.
Your time permitting, step back into real time at Lost Coast.
You'll receive a warm welcome, a smile, a friendly handshake and free no nonsense up to date fishing information to boot.
