How the Cookout Became a Pillar of Cuisine and Culture in Black America

"The Cookout is a joyous event that celebrates advancements, growth, and kinship within the Black community. It is characterized by its music, traditions, and cuisine, deeply rooted in Black American history, particularly Southern comfort food influenced by the history of colonial slavery and the antebellum era." - Andrea Byrd Andrea Byrd Andrea Byrd is a writer, poet, screenwriter, and storyteller based in the Midwest. My expectations were modest before trying Lot Que due to the amount of negative reviews. But, after trying it I must say that it exceeded my expectations. The meats were tender and flavorful and the sauces were all very good. The chicken wings are a must try, as well. They have ice cream and pints to go if that tickles your fancy. I will say that it does function more as a lunch spot than an evening dining experience. They do have some outdoor tables if you want to bring your pet.

I tried this place years ago when they first opened and had their own dining space. The food was pretty good. Then they were closed all the time, and now you have to order through Lot One. Tried again today and was so disappointed. The ribs had almost no meat. The burnt ends were rocks. Please do yourself a favor and get BBQ elsewhere. The Golden Mill has amazing BBQ that's great every single time.

I so wanted Lot Que to have good BBQ. The first time I went I got the pulled port sandwich and the meat was obviously leftover from previous day(s). I went again with the hope that the first day was just a fluke. But, with the second trip I found the brisket sandwich to be very very chewy and again not fresh. That brings me to today. I am writing this over a half eaten pulled pork sandwich. Most of the meet in the sandwich was so dry I couldnt chew it. Looking at the meat it was obvious half the meat was dried out from the air and overcooking. The other half was fairly fresh and definitely edible. Definitely mixed old meat with fresh meat. When you skip the real BBQ places, you get what is in the attached picture which was taken just 15 minutes after picking up the food.

Google
Great pulled pork the sides at $5 each were very small!!!! The beans were not baked bean , more of a chili was good but the kids weren't a fan bc we were expecting baked beans . . . . The brisket was very salty as a NC born and raised bbq lover I respected the Carolina sauce but they charge extra for brisket and ribs this place is mediocre at best. For $10 I should get a half a casserole of Mac and cheese lol

Google
Wife and I ordered to go. They were out of brisket. We both ordered burnt ends and we were both disappointed by them. They were overcooked and in some cases pure fat. The good news was the pastrami. It was unique and very flavorful. The ribs also had good flavor. The Mac and Cheese was fun with the bacon. Perhaps one day I might return to try the brisket but frankly there are too many alternate BBQ places in the metro that are better than Lot Q.

We had Lot One/Que cater our wedding, and it was awesome. We loved it and we got a lot of good feedback from our guests.

Google
I had high hopes, since this place is literally part of the neighborhood. We bought a lot of food. 2lbs burnt ends, 1lb brisket, smoked wings and sides. I grew up in KC, so I’ve had good BBQ in my time and this place needs some work. Burnt ends are not supposed to actually burnt and dry, they were covered with sauce to coverup the fact they were burnt. The brisket was moist, but lacked true smoke flavor and seasoning. I will say the wings were good. Mac and cheese is good. For the price paid, I expected to have a higher quality BBQ. The search is still on for good BBQ in Denver.

Wow! What an awesome experience tonight for dinner! The Brisket and ribs were smoked to perfection. The Brisket was heartily sliced and perfectly tender. The baked beans were literally the best baked beans we've ever had in our life. Every sauce was home made and delicious. The Alabama white sauce (yes a white sauce in a BBQ restaurant) was a perfect compliment to the other sauces and a nice cool down after a little spice. The freshly pickled pickles topped off the whole meal. The freshest home made ingredients made our meal top notch. The staff was friendly and inviting. The owners greeted us and listened to our thoughts on everything. Very impressed. We will definitely be back again. Our new favorite local fare!

Yelp
I enjoyed the bbq here. You can order from this restaurant at Lot One so I've only had the food at Lot One. I think it makes sense to order at Lot Que for to go orders or a quick meal. But if you want to sit down and enjoy the meal, ordering from Lot One is the way to go. The Lot Que location is pretty tiny. Note as of late 2021 the Lot Que location has temporary hours and doesn't open 4:30pm on weekdays. No weekday lunch here. I'm assuming Lot One doesn't serve the bbq either during lunch but I haven't tried.

Yelp
Great neighborhood restaurant. Good food, reasonable, great service. I love their salmon and the beet salad. It's all good!

Yelp
Excellent quality and variety for a BBQ restaurant. Continues to impress each time we have dined there. The house done pastrami is to die for and should not be missed!!!

Yelp
Arvada does not have many BBQ locations, so I was thrilled to see Lot Que right in the midst of Five Parks. They say that their meat speaks for itself, and that is true - I got the beef brisket and a sample of the burnt ends and they were juicy and packed with great flavor. I did not need any sauce. If I had to complain about something, it would be that indoor seating is limited and there did not appear to be any seating options in Lot One, although they are sister restaurants. And big napkins were not readily available; they had some small square napkins. Overall, very enjoyable experience, great food and I love that Arvada now has a BBQ contender!

Yelp
Had high hopes for a new BBQ option. Dry and tough, flavorless brisket, was curious about pastrami or turkey but both were out at opening on a Sunday. Extremely limited indoor seating. It works in a pinch, but if Wayne's is open in Superior it's a far better option close to northwest Arvada.

Yelp
Interesting place. This is also part of a restaurant two doors down called Lot One. Problem is, if you want to sit down and eat, or have a cocktail, you have to go to Lot One and order. Lot one also has their own menu, but you can order from Lot Que as well, very odd arrangement. The barbecue was pretty good. We had the burnt ends, brisket, ribs, pulled pork and hot links. All of it was good, the pulled pork was excellent. Unfortunately ALL of the meat came to the table luke warm at best. The sides were hot. For sides we has coleslaw, which was an odd kind of southwestern style that we didnt care for, baked beans were very good, sweet potato corn bread was interesting but very very dense... Overall the food was good, but would have been much better had it been at least warm. On the positive side, which is the reason for three stars instead of two, the manager made a point of stopping by and asking how things were. I told him that the flavors were very good but the meat was all cold. He was very conscientious and genuinely concerned. His reaction to that one complaint is probably the only reason we will go back in a few months. Lot Que is fairly new, 2 months I believe. We will revisit in a few months and see if things have improved. Still not sure what to say about the two shared businesses. Seems to me that they have a good start on their barbecue thing, why not open a separate location instead of having this odd and cumbersome arrangement?

Yelp
It was a rainy Saturday and I found myself hungry at about 3. I originally planned to eat at Lot One, then I parked in the lot and saw Lot Que. It was completely void of customers so I was hesitant and staring at the menu board when a friendly employee asked if it was my first time there. I told her it was and she welcomed me, then offered some suggestions and let me look over the menu some more. I asked how much meat was on the sandwiches and it's approximately 6oz which sounded decent so I decided to get those in the Turkey and Brisket she had mentioned. Sandwiches come with a side so I asked "what's good?" She said people love their Ranch Slaw and the Hash Brown Casserole, so I went with those. I asked her whether the Carolina Vinegar sauce was good and she said yes but said the Carolina Mustard sauce was her favorite, so I took both. I had it to go and she put them in nice boxes and a sack to keep in the heat, they were still nice and warm when I pulled them out to eat 15-20 minutes later. "Our meat speaks for itself, that's why the sauce is on the side." -- I would agree with that. I tried pieces of the Turkey & Brisket without any sauce and you could taste the delicious smokiness and rub. I then dipped them in the sauces to try those and the Carolina Vinegar is good but the Carolina Mustard is divine and compliments the meats perfectly. I decided to have the Turkey and save the Brisket so I poured part of the Carolina Vinegar AND Carolina Mustard onto the sandwich. It's the type of sandwich that makes you go "mmm" as you're eating it. I had the Brisket the next day and it reheated well. The Hash Brown Casserole was also amazing and I would definitely get it every time I go there. The Ranch Slaw was the only miss for me. It tasted fresh but I just couldn't stand the flavor. Kept asking myself how people like it. I wanted to go back and get the Turkey Sandwich with Carolina Mustard and Hash Brown Casserole again before I left Colorado, but there were so many other restaurants to try and my desire to experience something new won. I thought about Lot Que every day when considering food though and that says something. If I lived here I would be a regular!

Yelp
This is a great hidden bbq gem in west Arvada! My husband and I both get the three meat plate with all the sauces on the side and let me tell you, you won't be disappointed. Our favorite is the burnt ends, but everything is tasty and is out together rather quickly. If you are craving bbq and the rest of your party isn't, just go to Lot1 for dinner as you can also order food from LotQ. We will be back time and time again!

Yelp
I usually get a combination of the meats (burnt ends, brisket, pastrami (my fav) and turkey. Always really good. I haven't had any of the sides. I love having a BBQ place so close.

Yelp
Awesome BBQ, my favorites are the wings and pulled pork! Also, don't miss the ice cream, unique and delicious flavors.

Yelp
Updated: Gave them another shot - were open as advertised & quality & pricing very good. Legit option for bbq done right.

Lauren R.

Yelp
Great BBQ food backed by a great restaurant group. We ordered to-go the brisket, pulled pork, potato salad, Mac and cheese, baked beans, and slaw. Slaw was Smokey - unique flavor. The Mac and cheese was their recipe from next door, always delish. Potato was good, could use a bit more acid. And the baked beans were also Smokey, very tasty! Brisket and pork were tender and well seasoned. All in all, very good and we will be back!

Yelp
First time here. Had the two-meat combo; burnt ends and smoked turkey with a side of hash brown casserole. The food was tasty, but not worth the value. For $19 +tax, the portions were extremely small!!! Might return every now and then, but not worth the cost.

Yelp
The "seasoned fries" was cold($5, really?) I returned it and the cook just put it back to the fryer and give back to me. The meat was dry and sauce taste not well. I do not recommend this place.

Yelp
Have been here twice now and unfortunately won't be back. I ordered a half rack of ribs last night and they were the opposite of "fall off the bone" - I had to use a steak knife to separate them they were so tough. So disappointing. My husband got the burnt ends and they were ok but nothing special. The sides (we ordered mac n' cheese and the baked beans) were delicious but the point of getting BBQ is the meat and it was just off the mark.

Christie N.

Yelp
Such a cute, trendy, amazing BBQ place in Arvada! The meat is amazing and the sides are scrumptious! I love the coleslaw - it's a little different than KFC! Definitely worth grabbing some food for your next picnic or evening dinner!

Sandra M.

Yelp
Bad barbecue and sauce. Cole slaw was the worst ever. Okra had little flavoring and breading and the banana pudding had no bananas or wafer. So sad.

David K.

Yelp
Excellent BBQ! Lot Que's selection of smoked goodies is simply mouthwatering. I normally do not like brisket as it is often dry. Lot Que's brisket was the best I have ever tasted and has made a brisket fan out of me. Moist and flavorful, it simply melted in my mouth. I did the 4 meat plate so got to sample ribs, pulled pork and the Hot Links. All equally delicious. Looking forward to my next visit and sampling the smoked turkey and pastrami. Their key is the rub as it magically combines with the flavorful smoke. Sauces are served on the side complimenting the meats, not taking away their individual flavor. Sauces are all made on premise and the marriage is beautiful! Long live Lot Que!

Yelp
Love this little hidden gem! Great bbq and everyone loved it when we had it catered. Make sure to check it out.

Yelp
I have literally worked in restaurants my entire life. The service I had is unacceptable. The cook was rude. The girl with brown hair had an attitude I'd be fired for. The food was below mediocre. They made feel stupid anytime I asked a question. They're a new restaurant that won't last. I'll see to it with social media. DO BETTER. SUCK LESS. Don't eat here. They don't deserve your money.

Kathryn M.

Yelp
Being from Texas, I love finding some good barbecue in CO! I love the unique spin they put on everything. The pulled pork is delicious and the sauces are so different from most places. Just the right amount of sweet and spice. Super unique and yummy flavors I can't pick my favorite. Bonus is the sweet potatoes. Don't skip the cinnamon butter and marshmallow!

Tony L.

Yelp
I had the hot links and burnt ends. They were delicious. Will be back again.

Laura J.

Yelp
best bbq in Colorado! love all the homemade sauces to choose from and all the yummy side dishes. bbq meat falls off the bone. so delicious

Margaret G.

Yelp
1st time at this new Arvada restaurant. We each had the brisket sandwich, which was very good. The side dishes were amazing, we had the Mac n cheese and hash brown casserole - both a must! The staff was super friendly. Inside seating is limited and we enjoyed sitting outside. We topped off the evening with the ice cream, which was delicious and a generous portion. Will be back and also use their larger portions to go for an at home gathering.
