Lovćen National Park

Lovćen National Park feels like the moment Montenegro changes character. After the dramatic coastal scenery of Kotor Bay, the landscape suddenly opens into quiet mountain plateaus, rolling green hills and fresh alpine air. The park is not about grand tourist attractions; it is about space, silence and perspective. Wide meadows stretch between forested ridges, and simple mountain roads wind through scenery that feels calm and untouched. Walking here has a slow rhythm — the kind that encourages you to pause often and simply look around. The highlight is the climb to the Njegoš Mausoleum, perched high on Mount Lovćen. The journey itself is part of the experience: a winding road followed by a long staircase that leads to one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in Montenegro. From the top, you can see the Bay of Kotor, distant mountains and vast stretches of countryside all at once. It feels like standing above the country. Lovćen offers a beautiful contrast to the coast. Where Kotor is historic and Porto Montenegro is polished, Lovćen is peaceful and natural. It is the place to breathe, hike, picnic and enjoy Montenegro at its most serene.

Amazing scenery in Montenegro's mountains. We visited mid-February and there was deep snow higher up, and roads were difficult to navigate at times. The road up to the mausoleum was icy and we decided to turn round partway up, after walkers told us that a bus was stuck further up. After a 20-point manoeuvre, I turned the car round and slowly drove back down.

Stunning views on the coastal drive up - you can see Kotor and the coast - spectacular! The road is narrow and zigzags so would only suggest driving up if you’re a confident driver. 3 euros per person to enter the national park. We had a nice cup of tea and cake at the restaurant on the mountain top. We visited beginning of October and it was extremely cold…4 degrees and it started snowing so do wrap up! Definitely worth a visit though

A beautiful park with some nice treks. We did the circular trail from ivanova korita to the peak of bavina glavna and it was very nice. 10 km overall, walking through beech forrest, some nice trails overlooking the bay from tivat all the way to sveti stefan.

Worth the drive to get there. For North Americans the drive up can be abit harrowing at times as the road is narrow and there are countless switchbacks. On the way down I had to back up to let a bus by but the views are spectacular. The highlight of Montenegro for us.

Okay, so if you're ever in Montenegro, you absolutely HAVE to check out Lovcen park! Seriously, the views from up there are just unreal, like something out of a movie. There's so much to see and do, from hiking to exploring the history. Plus, the air is super fresh and clean, which is always a bonus! Trust me, it's an amazing experience you won't regret.

We went in an off season, in last week of December. The place was empty and we had the entire view to ourselves. The road trip was amazing with incredible scenic views and once we reached the top, the view was breathtaking.
