Bars and Nightlife in Phoenix

"A dueling piano bar on Tempe’s Mill Avenue by the Arizona State University campus, Low Key has a rotating crew of talented local musicians who play their own songs and guest favorites by request. With live music and drinks like fish bowls and syringes of Jell-O shots, Low Key stands out among the rest of nightlife in Tempe and is a great place to end an evening." - MATADOR_NETWORK

I was really enjoying the music show. But apparently I got sick and security asked me to leave. I hope I can come back, the music was awesome. I don't remember ordering a drink but they weren't mean. Sorry if I made a mess.

We reserved three tables last night for my wife and best friend’s birthday… Got there and everything was great. We had a very friendly server… Then about an hour later once the music started a different server started taking care of us and she was very rude. Fast-forward through the show and just total attitude the entire time, and then someone from Security came over to somebody in my party and basically asked us to leave because someone in my party was extremely intoxicated… This person was not causing any issues was not falling asleep at the table was not being belligerent or loud, and then Security surrounded our table making us feel like criminals… We’re all middle-aged, married couples and pose no threat whatsoever… I will definitely not be back even though the music and atmosphere was super fun Our impression of the removal of our part is because they wanted us to give up our tables because it was a Saturday night. I seriously want my $105 back we paid for the three tables to be reserved… I think it was ridiculous and somewhat discriminatory to ask us to leave. The funny thing is every five or 10 minutes our waitress was coming by asking if we wanted more drinks, so why do you push drinks on people and then kick them out if they have too much, In their opinion… Believe me, if my friend would’ve been causing a scene or being belligerent or loud we would’ve definitely left on our own volition however, she was doing nothing of the sort… Your security is heavy-handed, and your waitress that helped us was completely rude… Even the two bartenders behind the bar were rude to me when I went and bought a couple of Jell-O shots. Will not be back and will tell everybody that they should not frequent your establishment. I would love for ownership or management to reach out to me. Just want to jump on here two weeks later to confirm that no member of management has reached out to me about our terrible experience for my wife and my best friend’s birthday there at the bar. I’m honestly not surprised and will tell everybody I know not to go to this place. Avoid.

Very upset about a recent experience my boyfriend and I had at this piano bar. We had been going to this piano bar for years - we're in our 30s and we rarely go out for date nights. We ended up going here for our anniversary and I wrote songs dedicated to my boyfriend on their song request cards that our waitress took to the older piano guy. The waitress gave our note cards to the older piano player and he looked at them then literally grew them on the ground and shook his head. I asked our waitress if she could ask the piano guy why he would throw our song request papers on the floor where we could clearly see he did it and the waitress tried to cover for him saying she "handed" the request papers directly to him which was a lie. I understand if for some reason the paino guy didn't think the songs we requested were sufficient, but to throw our request papers to the ground right in front of us - very rude and disrespectful.

Google
Super fun place to go with groups of friends. Crowd energy can be different on different nights, but the performers do a great job getting everyone into it.

Google
Bring all your friends to Lowkey for the best night ever!! Live music all night, affordable drinks made by the best bartenders, and the feeling of comfort in a newly renovated booth seats🎵 The musicians can play almost any request you can think of! Amazing fish bowls and Jell-O shots for a fun Saturday night, highly recommend! #SweepstakesEntry

Google
It was a great experience that I hope to enjoy again & again. All the musicians are so talented, but I really loved when the younger man did "The Devil Went Down to Georgia!" It's literally the best version I've ever heard!

Sarah Peters

Google
Must try fish bowls. To request songs you have to pay CASH ONLY. Low tips don’t always play, had a great song and wanted to ask for my $7 back, it was for my engagement & they just threw it away 😖 I was sad until someone else did me a favor and paid for a back up Cranberries song (Thank you whoever you are)! FOR THE SINGERS I recommend asking if you don’t know the song to ask customers if they want to switch out songs instead of not doing then, it discourages customers. But they are fun, interactive and last night I had a lot of fun watching three of the gentleman on the stage having fun and entertaining the crowd. My tip, go early to find or reserve a seat and bring cash for tipping. The whole staff is fantastic tho. Oh don’t forget to order the shot shooters they have!!

Losee Rich

Google
Been here twice, last time with vacationing friends. Fun fun fun place overall. The facility is laid out a bit weird for seating purposes so get there early for best viewing angles & such. Service was outstanding both times, waitresses are really hitting tables on the regular. The crowd is mainly what makes your night cool/fun or super awesome. If say, there’s a young girl’s bachelorette group there & they have weird tastes in music they’re requesting, then you end up with less well-known / super popular songs the entire place will be in to. Folks - Request former hit songs so the performers can get everyone super fired up. That makes WAY more fun than the performers playing some weird obscure song that means something to you but sucks the life out of the room for a few minutes at a time.

Yelp
We went there on a Saturday after having a dinner at somewhere else. I am kinda new in the neighborhood, and Low Key is located in the basement, therefore, I didn't notice this place until I saw some people were going down and up from it. I got curious and told my partner to check it out. I am glad we did. Low Key is a nice Piano Bar, the energy, music, and vibe were great. Lots of tables of different sizes, and it was open seating. It was crowded when we went there so we had to stand for a while until a table got emptied. Fortunately, the table turns were fast; we didn't wait a long time. I liked some pianists more than the others. The good thing is they take turns to play every hour or so. I got a fishbowl; Mill Ave Mai Thai. Very affordable compared to the size you got. However, I found the Mai Thai to be super, extremely, sweet. I won't order the same flavor when I go back there. I also got a jelly shot from the server who was walking between the tables to sell it. I think it was $7, and again, It is a quite large size. idk, maybe I am coming from San Diego and we usually get a smaller size for the price, I found this a larger size lol Anyway, I've enjoyed the night while spending time at Low Key Piano Bar. We will be back

Yelp
Went here on New Years when it was crazy busy and still had a great time! The Photo Booth is nice to have and the music is great. What's even better--the staff is very friendly and helpful, I left my phone New years Eve and it was turned in and still there when I came back for it three days later. That was a Wednesday night. We stayed for a drink and both enjoyed our fishbowl drinks! And the music was truly awesome that night too! Definitely recommend for a great time with friends!

Yelp
This fun establishment should be named High Key piano bar! So many people it was hard to find seating, lucky there was enough chairs near the front for my friends and I to sit and enjoy the show! These people are absolutely talented af!! They all seem to play different instruments from Piano to guitar to actually singing! Such a fun atmosphere. By far my favorite spot to pop in at Tempe Mill Ave
google avatar

Yelp
I am new to AZ, and I am here for school. Got overwhelmed with studying, so I went to this spot for good vibes and a drink, and they definitely passed the vibe check. It was so much fun! Saving this spot as one of them ones to go to for a good time. The only thing is that when it gets packed, you have to stand, which is the norm for bars. Also, when my friend and I did finally end up getting a table we saw that they had a menu with food on it and waiters walking around but no one came to ask if we wanted to order anything until about 40 minutes of sitting down. It was a busy night, so that may have been why. Fortunately, my friend and I were not hungry.

Yelp
We had a very fun time last night at LowKey. The crowd enjoyed celebrating various occasions and danced and sang making this fun to watch. No cover charge was nice and we will be back. Thank you for an enjoyable evening LowKey
google avatar

Molly S.

Yelp
First time here! Several seating options big and small so you can sit with a group. Awesome piano playing. Service was great we never had to wait to order drinks
google avatar

Paul D.

Yelp
Came here after a day at Tempe Town Lake. Great vibe. I would just say it is a notch or two louder than it needs to be. There is a difference between high energy and high volume. One should be able to have some table talk without needing to yell to the person seated a foot away. The crowd was enthusiastic and sang along to many of the songs. I noticed when leaving around midnight, that this bar no longer had a short line like when I first arrived around 8pm. However, many of the college crowd bars and dance clubs had lines 40 plus people deep waiting to get in when those same places had no lines earlier in the night.

Yelp
So fun! We made reservations and I am super bummed that it wasn't clear that I was reserving a table and thought I needed to reservations for each person in my party. I ended up getting charged for all 4 tables and thought they were going to credit us on our final bill but they didn't. Either way the music and pianists were amazing and soo fun! Great drinks, great location! Wish there was one closer to home for me (it's a pricey Uber ride back but worth it!)

Lisa K.

Yelp
While i love a good piano bar, i wasn't surprised to see all the reviews that confirm I'm not the only one that thinks this place has poor management. First, upon entering the security guards/bouncers were extremely rude and aggressive towards us thinking one person in our group appeared drunk because he dropped his license when handing it to them. And their way of trying to verify was by taking his license and aggressively throwing it on the ground and telling him to pick it up. It was bizarre and of course he "passed" their stupid test. Next the waitresses here seem as though they are college kids with rude attitudes... i would avoid this place which is sad because it has so much potential.
google avatar

Desiree S.

Yelp
I have always loved coming to this place, however tonight one of the older performers made an incredibly transphobic comment that is unnecessarily pointed, and opinionated. Leave it off stage buddy.
google avatar

Maddy Z.

Yelp
Good vibes if you're looking for somewhere to go on a Tuesday night which we were. We came out after dinner and ordered a fishbowl to share. You can tell it's mostly everything but alcohol, but we still finished it as it tasted pretty average and as you can see it was mostly ice. The pianists are super talented and seem to really enjoy their jobs, they mostly play older hits but seem to know their audience well. I'd come back for the music, less so the drinks.

Jim H.

Yelp
The music was entertaining. Most of the songs were known to me. The drink prices were reasonable considering the location and activity. We had great fun.

Brooke A.

Yelp
Talented pianists and great listening, but one of the pianist was rude and would only play your requested song if you tipped over $20 then shamed people for requesting a song with a tip they thought was too low.
google avatar

Tiffany K.

Yelp
Went here last night for the first time and it was awesome. I wasn't sure what the atmosphere would be like since it's in the college district of tempe but it was amazing. Great talent in the pianos who were engaging with the audience and playing all requests. The place was huge and had a mixture of people which made it even more fun. There were mostly younger professional adults I would say between 24-40 which was a great scene. I will definitely go back!

Mike W.

Yelp
Went with small group- we all felt like it wasn't great, however a friend said it's usually better. The performers are a bit pompous. They don't play requested songs unless you pay a lot ($100 it is played next, $20 it is played fairly soon, $5 for back of the line, $1 it won't be played). None of our songs were played. The performances were not great. Songs tonight were not good but had a group of old ladies paying for strange songs. The drinks are overpriced - the 40 ounce shareable drink is $25 and completely filled with ice, truly a 12-16 ounce drink. Most seats can not see the stage, there is a large pole right in front of the stage obstructing most of the views. Wouldn't go unless your bored and looking for something new.
google avatar

Beau W.

Yelp
The security is out of control and we'll never go back. How many reviews are saying the same thing owners/management? You've obviously got a legit problem. Leaving my party of 7, my wife, my phone, and my wallet at the table to go outside and smoke. Suddenly I'm too drunk to reenter. Not true by a mile. Manager came outside to speak to me and said I had been escorted out. Complete lie. He then offered to fight me. I'm not sure what is going on with this place but I would avoid it. Shady.
google avatar

Kelly K.

Yelp
Always a great time! We have always sat at the bar as it has the best seats in the house to listen and people watch. Yummy drinks!
google avatar

Casey M.

Yelp
I have been coming to Low Key for four years. Recently, the establishment has gone so downhill. If I could give zero stars I would. The security here is on a POWER TRIP. They asked our friend how much he had to drink (he was not stumbling, being rude, or slurring his words) and he said "a couple". THEY DENIED HIM. We got into every other bar on Mill Avenue after this. Absolutely unbelievable. Will never be going back.
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Have you ever met someone and felt like you've known them since freshman year? No? Maybe you've spoken to someone for the first time in ten years, but it feels like no time has passed. Still no? Well, come to LowKey and grab a drink from the lower bar. If you're lucky and come on a Friday, you may run into Dana. Echoing this bars moody but fun atmosphere, Dana will make you anything from a tequila-pineapple-Red Bull "fishbowl" to a full on custom rye cocktail with a touch ginger beer & expressed mint over ice. Its not a mule -it's better...and a real cocktail. THAT's service. Whether you come here at 7pm or 10pm, you're in for a treat. Don't hesitate. Come early and reservations aren't a worry for 1-3 people.
google avatar

Brooke S.

Yelp
We had a great time! The service was awesome and the musicians were so fun and talented. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Shobee G.

Yelp
They gave my credit card back to someone else when cashing us out, causing all of my info to be stolen and hundreds in fraud charges. Like be sooooo for real

Dommnique N.

Yelp
If I could give 0 I would. The security guards are overly aggressive. The manager is no help, everyone in this place are just dumb kids that don't know their ass from their elbow. It's dead by 10:30 and good luck getting them to play your song, let alone know the song you want. Shitty bar, dumb kids, over all wouldn't recommend.

Kathy B.

Yelp
The door guys "bouncers" are the rudest, unfriendly, unhappy people I've encountered and I'm 43! Then the bartender was rude and unhappy. Nope I'll spend my night out and money somewhere else. After reading more reviews seems like the door guys have issues for a while.

Kayden H.

Yelp
screw this piano bar. very rude bouncers and inconsiderate of the people who are of age and want to party!
google avatar

Alec L.

Yelp
Apparently I was too intoxicated but I could go into the other bars... this annoys me. Get new people out front.

Orangeguy 3.

Yelp
Management -- look at the Yelp reviews. What do all the negative ones have in common? The security staff SUCKS. You literally have such a great bar and the experience is completely ruined by how bad your security team is. All you have to do is make 1 change and it fixes the place.
google avatar

Sandra B.

Yelp
Had a great time here with friends. Loved the atmosphere and personalities of the performers.

Juan J.

Yelp
No guarantees they will play the song you tip for. Waste of $10. But overall, still a standard piano bar. Drinks are as expected for a college crowd

Matthew W.

Yelp
Performers are pompous and not funny. Songs are stilly and non entertaining. No food served even though it's on the menu.
google avatar

Sugey B.

Yelp
Loved this place! Great atmosphere and talented musicians. It is a must visit! The drink prices are reasonable too! Come with your friends, it is so much fun!
google avatar

Annette V.

Yelp
Sometimes you just need to sing. Love hanging out and hearing the piano challenge the audience gives those guy's to play always a fun time. Keep it up y'all

Lexi E.

Yelp
We used to go here all the time and loved it so much. Unfortunately our favorite performer Mikey C no longer plays here. If Mikey were to ever come back we would be here every night and bring all our friends. We miss him. He is what makes Low Key.
google avatar

Joshua D.

Yelp
The security guards are unprofessional and rude. The security was knocking on the bathroom stall and I immediately got out. I informed them I was feeling sick and was dry heaving(I've only had 1 drink). He tells me that I can't be doing that and they would have to kick me out. He then asks me if I was doing cocaine because I was "walking back and forth." They kicked me out immediately after I got out the restroom which made me a little upset but I understood that they were trying to do their job. They didn't tell me exactly why they were kicking me out but I assumed it was because of my dry heaving. After I saw my friend he informed me that they kicked me out because I was DOING COCAINE!! I was completely infuriated with these claims because 1. I hadn't consumed any coke. 2. There were meritless, b.s claims. There was nothing in my behavior that was indicative of me being on coke beside my "walking back and forth." The most infuriating part is that he would spread false information about me and was never straight up with me about why I was getting kicked out. I understand the management doesn't care and that this review will be a waste of my time, because clearly others have the same problem and nothing has been done. WILL NEVER RETURN!!!

Shayne N.

Yelp
These asshole security guys, that look like they're 12, denied my daughter who is 22, entry multiple times for some reason. It is her graduation night from ASU, and we all wanted to celebrate, but for some reason, they won't let her in because they say she is too drunk to walk down the stairs. She is NOT drunk!!! And where the hell is the ADA elevator if stairs are an issue? She was not stumbling like they claimed. Did it ever occur to them that maybe she has a disability with her legs? Low key needs new bouncers that actually know what they're doing. Wish I could give less than one star
google avatar

Alexandria J.

Yelp
security is out of control. to sit there and yell at women who are simply standing waiting for friends and insult them by calling them names? absolutely foul.

Alexa M.

Yelp
fuck low key. I went there for 4 years in college when I went to ASU, and when I went there tonight they denied me at the door when I was SOBER. I don't drink anymore I go with my friends and DD and the bouncer asked me how much have you drank tonight and I thought he was joking! I said none why? he said yea you stumbled in and said I can't go in. I am at a disbelief at how shitty Mill Ave has become since I graduated college. How sad, I wish nothing but the best to everyone and advise everybody to go to Old town over anything!

Jack B.

Yelp
Great bar but security needs an attitude adjustment. The douchebag brigade is running the show at the front. Total assholes.
google avatar

Brittney W.

Yelp
Not LGBTQ friendly in my opinion! I have been here several times with different people and always loved it and tonight took my brother and his boyfriend who are visiting from NYC. I hyped the place up to them for months! A little over an hour after we'd been there, my brother and I walked to the bathroom and a security guard followed us. The guard waited outside the bathroom for my brother and when he came out said he and another witness had heard him throwing up (he did not!) and the guard hauled him out of the place with his hands behind his back. My brother and his boyfriend spoke to the manager who just kept restating that that's their policy and it's a private establishment and they can do it however they see fit. I'm just so disappointed because I always loved it here.
google avatar

Maeve G.

Yelp
Such a fun place! Real quality entertainment with no cover, and is a nice change of pace from the other offerings on Mill. I will definitely return!
google avatar

Grace D.

Yelp
This is my favorite place on Mill without a dance floor. The age range is very wide compared to most other places and everyone seems comfortable with that. I would take my mom here- it's just fun. The musicians are good, and it's not just one person on a piano. I've heard them do a variety of types of music well. It's so fun to sing along with everyone there- people really get into it! Plus, there's no cover. When the place is busy, the service gets slower, but I've been impressed by the quality. They're very nice with splitting a table's bill, even on a busy night with a big group. The drink menu is more limited than some other places nearby, and all their signature cocktails seem to incorporate Red Bull for some reason. I wish requesting songs actually worked without providing a cash tip, but I don't mind trusting other people to pick good music. It usually works.
google avatar

Joshua S.

Yelp
Best place I have been in a longgggggg time Awesome staff. Awesome crowd. Awesome performance.
google avatar

Isabel D.

Yelp
Absolutely fun place! If you're looking for a great night with some fun, whether you're in a group or by yourself, you're guaranteed to have a great time. The music was loud, the drinks were cold, the staff was friendly and the vibes were high! I would definitely go there again!
google avatar

S. Alexandra R.

Yelp
I went here on Tuesday for the first time. I ordered a $15 fishbowl from a long haired brunette sever who swiped my card in front of me, put it in between her breasts and walked away and came back with my card after a couple minutes. The next morning I decided to check my bank account because it struck me as odd that she walked away with my card after running it. I noticed I had 2 charges for $15 instead of 1. I called this establishment to try and speak with a manager about what it happened but nobody answered. I have called and left multiple voicemails throughout the weekend and even wrote an email but I never heard back. This is completely unacceptable. I asked my friends to check their bank account and they were double charged. Very unprofessional of managers to not return phone calls. Very gross for the server to put my card in her boobs....

Peyton C.

Yelp
so sad ... read several of their reviews and sadly i agree. went to low key tonight and experienced the same thing. the security is our or hand, nothing but rude. tall blonde kid looks maybe 20 if that told me he was going to throw me out with the cops simply because , i was standing there waiting for my friend to get her ID checked so we could walk in together not even a 1 minute goes by tells me he will go and get his female security guard to gladly throw me out... just because i stood their in clear walk way waiting to go down the stairs. based of there reviews seems like all you have to do to get a job is be a rude & disrespectful human being to get a job they sure aced that one !! wouldn't recommend honestly been here before as well & the music really isn't enjoyable & neither is their drinks.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
It was my first time there. I do not go out much because of my work dedication and definitely not a socially dense place like Low Key during COVID. It is not my thing. However, I adapted and requested a song, Born In The USA by Bruce Springsteen after tipping Ben Murphy $5.00. The pianist preceded to lecture my table that it was a racist song and he would not sing it, but he kept the tip! It is not a racist song. It is a very patriotic song and is a statement about the perceptions of the Vietnam war. It was intended as a statement of how the Vietnamese were discriminated against back then. Millenials seem to be ultrasensitive to every little thing they feel is racist even though it is not racist. Just because a bunch of Trump fans played this at protests does not make it racist! I refer to Rolling Stone's Interview: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/bruce-springsteen-wrote-born-in-usa-exclusive-book-excerpt-811634/amp/ I will never come back to this narrow-minded millenial establishment. I will also make a point, since the pianist made a point to embarrass us and imply we were racist, to strongly discourage anyone I do business with (100's a month) to avoid your establishment! Bad form.
google avatar

Santana H.

Yelp
The absolute best place! So so much fun. The performers were so fun and great at getting the crowd going. Service was good for how busy it was. Highly recommend for something fun!
google avatar

Jamie H.

Yelp
Low Key is seriously the most fun for all people. Dueling pianos and acts make it an awesome place to take people. It's definitely one of our favorite go to spots when friends are in town and when we want to get out and have a good time!
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
SO MUCH FUN! We had the best time at Low Key Dueling Piano Bar! The musicians, the crowd, the drinks...WOW, what a blast! We arrived around 8:30, and it wasn't really that busy. By the time 9pm rolled around the place was packed. By 10, standing room only. If you're looking for a great night out in Tempe, definitely check out Low Keys. You're sure to be in for a great time. P.S. get a/or a few Jell-O shots...yummy and so fun!

Scott G.

Yelp
My friends and I actually liked this spot. I showed up and dropped my wallet and all of a sudden I was too drunk to be let in. It was 830 on a Friday night and I wasn't going to argue with them, but they should def get a higher training. We just went somewhere else.
google avatar

Aryana M.

Yelp
I was at this location in tempe last night and out of no where I began to faint waiting for my drink... I don't know what provoked this but I didn't have one single sip of alcohol the entire day didn't even get a taste of the drinks we ordered, yet the security decided to treat me like some drunk customer... I was losing mobility hearing and sight and they decided to do absolutely nothing they couldn't have cared any less. They told me I had to get off the stairs after I tried to make it outside for some fresh Air... and then watched as I sat outside of the bar losing consciousness.... This was the worst most careless treatment I have ever seen. I was completely sober and having a health issue and they didn't care to ask to help absolutely nothing. Security is there to protect customers and the establishment and those two at the door were not doing there job what so ever. I was outside fainting by 8:20 to help you better understand who you had on duty this night... this was horrible horrible treatment and I don't plan to return because of it. I have never fainted in my life this was a very scary experience for me and these two grown men just watched...like what if I was a girl who had been roofied and they just stare at me and kick me out telling me I can't sit there on the stairs .... I get this may not be apart of their training per say but it is human decency very very disappointed.
