My stay at Lab D Hostel in Phuket has been an interesting mix of pros and cons. The hostel’s massive size is both a strength and a weakness. While there’s plenty of space, it lacks the charm and intimacy of smaller hostels, making it challenging for solo travelers to meet people. The social atmosphere is minimal, and even activities like the Friday pub crawl didn’t deliver the kind of engagement solo travelers usually seek. This hostel seems better suited for groups of friends than individuals looking to connect.
Another issue was the lighting in the rooms. They were dimly lit, which made simple tasks unnecessarily difficult at times. Better lighting would significantly improve the overall experience.
I was also disappointed by the tours offered by the hostel’s holiday team. I paid 3,000 baht for an elephant tour, only to discover that local agencies offered the same experience for at least 1,200 baht less. While the staff member assisting me was friendly, this left a sour taste, as it felt like the hostel prioritized profit over fair pricing for guests. My advice: book tours with nearby agencies—they’re cheaper and offer identical experiences.
On the positive side, the breakfast was fantastic for the price, offering great value. The staff were friendly and professional, creating a welcoming vibe despite the overall businesslike nature of the hostel. Its central location is also convenient for exploring Phuket.
In summary, Lab D Hostel is a decent choice if you’re traveling with friends or prioritize spacious facilities and location. However, for solo travelers or those expecting a cozy, social atmosphere—or even just better-lit rooms—it falls short. Better lighting and fairer tour prices could make this hostel a more appealing option for a wider range of travelers.
