9 Historical Secrets of Edinburgh

"Thousands of pairs of feet walk over a series of brass bricks that run along Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. Unbeknown to many of these milling pedestrians, they’re passing over former mid-15th-century structures that once peppered this thriving and bustling High Street. These buildings were what was referred as “Luckenbooths,” or lockable booths. They were what would be more commonly known today as market stalls. Dozens of these booths were originally constructed to house the wares of artisans who traded in gold and silver trinkets. They eventually encompassed other merchants, such as toymakers, printers, and various other goods and services. These buildings tended to congregate around St. Giles Cathedral and the the notorious Tollbooth Gael (Jail). Several notable personalities had businesses in these structures. William Creech was a publisher who printed the works of poets such as Robert Burns and Adam Smith. The first book lending library operated by Allan Ramsey was located along here. An interesting character named Peter “Indian Pete” Williamson, so named because he wore Native American attire, ran the first Penny Post from here. Eventually, Edinburgh’s main thoroughfare became too congested and the city planners decided the Luckenbooths had to be removed. By the mid 1800s, they were all demolished.  Now, brass markers are all that remain. Across from the David Hume sculpture there is a brass “H” that indicates were public executions took place. These include the notorious Deacon Brodie and George Bryce, the last criminal to be publicly hanged, in 1874. Located around the entrance to the World’s End is the outline of what once was the Netherbow Gatehouse. Just up the street from this infamous pub is John Knox’s House, where visitors can see the last remaining Luckenbooth. It’s situated across from the Service Desk, adjacent to the windows looking out onto the Royal Mile. You can also see a model of how the Luckenbooths looked on the second floor of the Museum of Edinburgh." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Recently visited as a group of 8 ordering from their Christmas menu. We were seated upstairs which was quieter than downstairs. The overall ambience of the restaurant was nice and was tactfully decorated for the Festive period. I’d personally ordered the pork belly, turkey dinner and chocolate brownie from the Christmas set menu. The food was great - pork belly as the starter was extremely tender and melt in the mouth. I was surprised at the size of the turkey dinner (in a good way) as you often get stung with a festive menu, however, this was a great portion size and overall cooked extremely well. Only slight gripe, and again this is a personal taste, but I felt the turkey was slightly on the dry side, as the outer layer of it was a bit brown and could have been done with a little less time - the rest of the plate was cooked perfectly with the pigs in blankets being especially nice (who doesn’t love them?!). The chocolate brownie looked and tasted more like a chocolate fudge cake, but was still nice and none of it left. The general feedback from what others had from the menu was also positive, everyone enjoyed their meal. What knocked this down from a 5 star review was having to wait quite a while for certain drink orders throughout the meal. Quite often a 10/15 minute wait and on two occasions had to remind the wait staff we’d ordered. The staff were generally lovely, but waiting an extended period of time on drinks throughout a meal isn’t ideal. Would recommended the place and will certainly be back.

Wanted to have a nice Scottish breakfast in Edinburgh and Luckenbooths didn’t disappoint! Excellent service from Bohday. The serving is huge. Nice ambience. What a great way to start your first day in Edinburgh!

Located in a marriott autograph hotel : old town chambers right along the royal mile, this all day eatery serves a mix of local Scottish and British food. We sat for lunch and ordered a range of cocktails (seasonal cocktails during Xmas were available) 8/10. For food, went for pumpkin soup, fish and chips and steak frites. The food was unfortunately disappointing. The soup had too much curry spice nuance, the steak though medium rare was dry and difficult to bite or cut (may be also a result of the cut of meat), and the fish and chips, though best of the the three was quite tasteless and needed a lot of sauces to compliment. Service and ambience was good 8/10. Pricey - One time visit

We visited on Christmas Day with a reservation for the breakfast. The service was good, but unfortunately the ambience wasn’t great as we were seated in the lobby area. The food was also disappointing. I ordered the garden breakfast and it arrived not very warm, the poached eggs were overcooked and the halloumi was also overcooked and cold. Overall, it lacked flavour. My partner’s Scottish breakfast had the same issue with overcooked eggs. I understand Christmas Day is extremely busy, but overall it wasn’t an enjoyable breakfast. The staff however were attentive and friendly.

Amazing meal with fabulous presentation. We devoured it so we only have photos of dessert. the “BEST Sticky toffee pudding in Carmel sauce” she’s ever had! The lamb was tasty in a delicious sauce as was the pork tenderloin.

What can I say — their lunch menu is amazing! My kids ask to go there every day. Their favorite is the smoked salmon with brioche, which they absolutely love. We visited during the Fringe festival, great found.

Brunch in an outdoor (dining street side) setting in beautiful Edinburgh where we could breathe in all the excitement? Yes please! The food was great, flavorful and a lot of it. I gave less than five stars on service because I think our server left and they forgot to bring our bill. We waited about 15 minutes before we caught someone to give us our bill so we could pay.

This was a last minute, we are hungry, get out of our way kind of stop. But you know what? This was really good. We had our first experience with haggis I liked it a lot. , and everything was really good. We all also had an old fashioned with Scotch whiskey. Really nice!
