9 Historical Secrets of Edinburgh

"Thousands of pairs of feet walk over a series of brass bricks that run along Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. Unbeknown to many of these milling pedestrians, they’re passing over former mid-15th-century structures that once peppered this thriving and bustling High Street. These buildings were what was referred as “Luckenbooths,” or lockable booths. They were what would be more commonly known today as market stalls. Dozens of these booths were originally constructed to house the wares of artisans who traded in gold and silver trinkets. They eventually encompassed other merchants, such as toymakers, printers, and various other goods and services. These buildings tended to congregate around St. Giles Cathedral and the the notorious Tollbooth Gael (Jail). Several notable personalities had businesses in these structures. William Creech was a publisher who printed the works of poets such as Robert Burns and Adam Smith. The first book lending library operated by Allan Ramsey was located along here. An interesting character named Peter “Indian Pete” Williamson, so named because he wore Native American attire, ran the first Penny Post from here. Eventually, Edinburgh’s main thoroughfare became too congested and the city planners decided the Luckenbooths had to be removed. By the mid 1800s, they were all demolished.  Now, brass markers are all that remain. Across from the David Hume sculpture there is a brass “H” that indicates were public executions took place. These include the notorious Deacon Brodie and George Bryce, the last criminal to be publicly hanged, in 1874. Located around the entrance to the World’s End is the outline of what once was the Netherbow Gatehouse. Just up the street from this infamous pub is John Knox’s House, where visitors can see the last remaining Luckenbooth. It’s situated across from the Service Desk, adjacent to the windows looking out onto the Royal Mile. You can also see a model of how the Luckenbooths looked on the second floor of the Museum of Edinburgh." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Amazing meal with fabulous presentation. We devoured it so we only have photos of dessert. the “BEST Sticky toffee pudding in Carmel sauce” she’s ever had! The lamb was tasty in a delicious sauce as was the pork tenderloin.

Brunch in an outdoor (dining street side) setting in beautiful Edinburgh where we could breathe in all the excitement? Yes please! The food was great, flavorful and a lot of it. I gave less than five stars on service because I think our server left and they forgot to bring our bill. We waited about 15 minutes before we caught someone to give us our bill so we could pay.

What can I say — their lunch menu is amazing! My kids ask to go there every day. Their favorite is the smoked salmon with brioche, which they absolutely love. We visited during the Fringe festival, great found.

A really nice place to eat in Edinburgh! I thought the staff were lovely, and I liked that this restaurant had space for visitors at 8pm unlike other restaurants. This was my first time trying haggis and I loved the mini haggis/haggis bites! I also adored the broccoli. I did find the chilli jam on top of the broccoli, and the mango salad next to the haggis a bit too sweet in combination. I would have loved some citrus on the side to cut through, or something like that. But otherwise, I would recommend this place!

It was really a pleasure to eat breakfast here. When the plate arrived I was laughing instantly 😄 Why? See the photos please. But it was really delicious... Friendly staff and lovely décorations.

We had a walk in here during fringe week. Not long to wait and as busy as they was not expecting much. We was seated after a short wait. Again another short wait for the order to be taken. Well worth the wait tbh. We had cracking mains really well cooked belly pork for me and the wife had chicken and haggis which was very tasty. Drinks was again a bit of a wait and we received no table water but the mains was so nice had desserts. Wife had the sticky toffee pudding and I had the cheesecake, cheesecake was nice but the sticky pudding was delicious tbh. All in 111 pounds 2 mains 2 desserts and 2 cocktail and beers not that bad for the standard of food tbh. Definitely a recommend from me.

I absolutely recommend this restaurant! The only thing we regret is not going back before leaving Edinburg! We were there for brunch or lunch. Service was fantastic and everyone was very welcoming and nice. I absolutely love and 100 percent recommend trying the local soup. It's not your typical american clam chowder but it's along the lines. Sticky toffee pudding was the bomb. And our server treated us to another local dessert since I was so indecisive. I really appreciated it!

A quaint and lovely spot for breakfast with reasonable prices. The tea was good and food items were delicious. Would go back.
