The 5 Best Hostels in San Diego (Updated 2025)

"If you want to stay out late and party, this hostel is ideal—Lucky D's hosts nightly events and pub crawls and is located in the central Gaslamp district near plenty of bars and restaurants. It's one of the cheapest options, with lockers in every room, comfy mattresses despite squeaky, curtainless bunks, spacious colorful common areas, laundry facilities, and bikes for rent, so it's easy to socialize and have fun on a budget." - Matthew Kepnes

PLACE/ROOM We stayed in a 4-bed room as two people. The room itself wasn’t impressive, but it was functional and had a window you could actually open, rare around here and definitely appreciated. CLEANLINESS Very clean for hostel standards. Toilets, shared spaces, and rooms were well maintained. PRICE/VALUE for MONEY Around $90–100. Overall, it’s a 4.5-star place in terms of value, but I’d round it up to 5 to support the place. SERVICE AND ATTITUDE Young people staying at the hostel were likely helping with cleaning in exchange for accommodation, a nice win-win situation. LOCATION Not bad, not perfect but easy to find. OTHER NOTES Nicely decorated for a hostel. The breakfast was decent, and shared kitchens had designated storage space and fridges for everyone. The common area had a social atmosphere with young travelers hanging out. Check-in available until 2 AM. OVERALL IMPRESSION Far above average for a hostel, thoughtful design, sociable environment, and solid amenities. CHANCE OF RETURNING 80%

😊 friendly hostel 💰 Great price 📍 Close to the heart of downtown Great hostel! This was my first stay here and I was excited since I would be so close to the downtown area. The decor itself is very alternative and if your into art, your gonna love it. The public spaces for patrons were to another level. I have stayed at many hostels and I have to say that this was one of the best. The TV room is impressive, the reading room is cozy and the kitchen is spacious! Special shout out to Madie who was the receptionist who checked me in and she was top notch in her service! Thank you again for the stay, I will definitely be back again! ❤️

Unfortunately, I was unable to stay at this hostel due to multiple accessibility issues that I think future guests—especially those with disabilities and/or who are over 6'6" and overweight—should be aware of. The hostel is located on the 4th floor with no clear or advertised accessible entrance, and I have disabilities that make stairs extremely difficult to manage. Due to a Padres baseball game and a local party, several roads were blocked off, and there was no available parking nearby. I spent close to two hours trying to find parking, which was frustrating and exhausting. When I finally got inside, the room was much smaller than advertised online. As someone who is 6'8" and 400 lbs, space is not just a comfort issue—it’s a necessity. The bunk beds were clearly not designed for larger individuals—I couldn’t fit in them at all. There was no way I could fit lengthwise or widthwise. It was super hot and stuffy in the room, which made sense since the room is the size of a standard office broom closet. The bathroom were small as well and at my size, I could barely fit to do a number 1...I am not even going to image how to do a number 2. That said, the aesthetic of the place is beautiful. It has a cool, artsy vibe that would appeal to creatives—if you're a poet, musician, or rocker type, you’ll probably appreciate the atmosphere. In the end, I went home, mostly out of frustration from the parking situation. This place may be great for young, able-bodied travelers looking for an inspiring environment, great location being in the heart of downtown San Diego; but it’s absolutely not suitable for guests with mobility needs or those who require accurate space expectations. I hope the management takes steps to be more transparent about the building’s limitations, especially online. Also it should be noted that there is street parking but some location you have to move the car by 8 am other spots 5 am. There is a private parking lot next to the hostel, but it is $40 overnight and the majority of private parking lots there are $40&up a night.

howdy i booked a reservation at this location through expedia. i spent $60 for two nights. this location is bad. bad service. bad rooms. bad location. restrooms trashy disgusting. housekeepers must be lazy. the staff check on you while asleep which is kinda creepy to me. & the morning breakfast is just dingy cereal & cheap sweets. i would not even let a dog/cat/rabbit/hamster spend the night here. the staff is lazy i think bc most of them live there or around the area & they do not listen. the hospitality service is pathetic. dirty laundry all in the hallway. *if you love wasting money & being disgusted & see a lot of overflowing trash cans than give lucky d’s hostel a visit. im never going to come back to this place.👎👎 instagram@ovalmogul☪️

Pros: - Cheap - Great downtown location - Reasonably clean Cons: - I showered with cold water, not sure if it's a one time thing but it's unacceptable. - Bathrooms: --> Only 2 individual bathrooms and showers per floor. It was okay for me since hostel was mostly empty but with maybe 30 people per floor max, that is not enough. --> Taps don't stay open, need to keep holding with one hand. -- 1/2 bathrooms was out of paper towels for at least a day. - Bunk bed is hard and uncomfortable .

Check in with Stephan was delightful and informative. The hostel has plenty of character and its unique charm. People singing, laughing, everything you'd expect from travelers. Would come back!

Great experience, specially the location and staff attention. Hope to be back soon. I visited the city for a meeting in the Convention Center and was really easy to walk from the hostel. Restaurants and cafes are also available and 7 eleven 24h.

Had people in the community room loud / partying / screaming all night. It’s like you’re sleeping in a pub. Receptionist too scared to say anything to quiet them down. Never again. Who keeps a community room open all night? They need to advertise as a party hostel with no quiet hours.
