Where to Taste Springfield-Style Cashew Chicken

"A stalwart of Springfield's cashew chicken with four locations, Lucy's Chinese Food has been in business for more than 40 years and lays claim to the oldest Chinese food restaurant in Springfield. The restaurant’s thickly breaded chicken is topped with a light, caramel-colored sauce. Don’t forget the fortune cookie." - Anne Roderique-Jones

I haven't been here in a few years and I'm wondering why because they have some great food. I love the hot chicken stir fry or the lomein. Today I got the veggie lomein and their stir fry flavor is so perfect and I haven't found it anywhere else. Plus their crab rangoons are savory instead of sweet! I love that and the sweet and sour sauce is exactly that! Not too sweet like everywhere else. I hope they join doordash & get tap pay soon!

Google
I'm speaking for me but my entire table will only come on the days Sid/Sidney are working. The atmosphere brightens up and it's hard to find such great quality customer service as he provides. Big vehicles have issues with the drive-thru. We have had what looks like high schoolers, which are new to work, but look very unhappy and burden by us ordering. We all agree that he definitely brings livelihood to this small restaurant and should be, if he isnt already, one of the top employees The food is good because it's white meat chicken but the atmosphere drive through and everything else is not incredible. If you're looking for a great place to eat, with quick service AND an excellent conversation, come on Friday or Saturday and ask for him. Young man, if you see this, thank you for the friendliness and comfort that you provide us while we eat. Thank you for not rushing us or making us feel as if we were just another ticket.

Google
From my cashew chicken trail series of reviews. I’m very biased towards Lucy’s but I do objectively think they have a lot of great elements. I typically switch between getting the cashew chicken or chicken fried rice. In my opinion, Lucy’s has the best rice on the side. The chicken is decent, but could be more tender. Their breading starts to flake off once the sauce is added which I like. I really like their wontons, and you get six small ones, perfect for dipping in the sauce.

Google
Used to love Lucy‘s. I go there last night and order a general chicken combo and a general chicken half combo all white meat. I check out come home look at the bill. There’s a $.68 service fee on there so I call up Lucy‘s and ask Caleb for a manager while he didn’t wanna give me a manager he said no manager was around But after multiple tries and telling him I could only talk to a manager. I finally got someone in charge his name was Mike I doubt seriously that that was his name but that’s the name he gave me. I asked him what the $.68 service fee was for on the bill and he said oh did you use a debit card or a credit card I said yes and he said well. They charge $.68 for each one well therefore I will not be eating there anymore because the food sucked it taste like they never changed their oil and the crab Rangoon was Overcooked Terrible experience!!

Google
Came here for the general and sweet and sour chicken, and it's fantastic! The food is good, the place is impeccably clean, and our food came out very quick! The person servicing us, Garrett, was very friendly and patient with us. It's such a shame hardly anyone else was here during the visit, because it definitely deserves more business. I definitely recommend this location, especially if you're going out with friends or are on a casual date.

Google
Lucy's is iconic. Just the right place to eat. The service is super friendly and your food comes to the table. We came in from out of state and thought of Lucy's immediately. Really enjoyed the experience and will be back next visit to Springfield.

Google
Me and my girlfriend went earlier today. The restaurant is very clean and spacious. The staff were very nice and we got 70$ worth of food in less than 10 minutes. Everything was so delicious I definitely would recommend. Our favorite Chinese in Springfield by far.

Google
The food was hot and tasted great. Yes the building is older and not much to desire but the food was good.

Yelp
We stopped for lunch after seeing an advertisement for their orange chicken. They have lunch specials that are reasonably priced. Our food was very good for a "fast food" restaurant. Order at the counter, get your fountain drinks, tableware, napkins, and any sauces you like. It was a fairly large place, and I bet they get busy at times.

Yelp
The only reason I am leaving this low review is because I picked up shrimp Lomein and crab Rangoon for my granddaughter. She was at a volleyball tournament and I was bringing her lunch. I tipped the window people 3 dollars. I got to the tournament and had No Serving utensils and no napkins. Not even sauce or the Rangoon. No one even asked if I needed them. I just assumed they would put it in a to go order. The food is usually very good. But we have to wait until we go home to eat it.

Yelp
The food is consistently amazing! I love the cashew chicken, the white meat is perfect every time. Service has always been efficient and everything has been included and packed well when doing take out. I think the garden is so beautiful as well, my favorite part.

Yelp
Plate of salt with chicken added. Spent a load of money at this place and the woman working (said she was owner) was extremely rude. The one and only time we have been and will never go back again.

Yelp
the food was terrible, barely warm, very bland. Service was alright, we needed to go boxes and waited at the counter and just ended up leaving because the food wasn't worth the wait. i was also contemplating on getting a refund or at least something else but staff was no where to be found.

Yelp
Today is March 24 2023 and just ordered rice and it ws the worse and took 1.5 hours to deliver. Run as it's crap.

Yelp
Burnt Noodles Old chicken Gross soup Good creme cheese things that are fried. Ok Missouri you want chinese food??? Go to Bamboo Garden in Carthage. I'm not getting paid to say anything but I can't with Joblins "shitty wok" Chinese food. GOD!!!! Why do all your chinese food places suck soooooo badddd!!!! Pictures look good but the taste is horrible. They put an extra order in our table and then took it back and gave it to the right customer like, ok not like we in a Pandemic or anything. Take a look at that photo looks good but taste bad! You know me! I keep it 100!

Yelp
Probably the most un Chinese "Chinese " food I have ever had. The "cashew chicken " is pieces fried chicken breast meat with gravy and a few tiny slivers of cashews. The "half" order is the exact same size as the "full" order. I talked to the girl working there and said I ordered a "full" order but it's the same size as my mother's half order. She said, "oh it looks the same size, but it's not, really." ????? I said, "is this fox news world here?" She said, "I wish it was." Welcome to Christian county, Missouri.

Yelp
If you like twice deep fried cold eggrolls, deep fryer grease fried rice and soupy lo mein you will love this place it hit the trash can after 1st bite. Should have known with not one car in there parking lot. It would work as a good colonoscopy cleanse.

Yelp
The website doesn't have a menu on it, "they are working on it" as if it is more than a 5 minute task. It's nice to see ahead of time and make up your mind. Menu is somewhat confusing - stir fry w/ what? The chicken is high quality. I ordered spicy chicken - not sure if that's what I got or not, think so, wasn't spicy really. Egg roll was OK, crab rangoons were good. I got this on a KY3 deal; probably would not pay full for it. Had to "order up" to get to / past $10 which seemed odd - most places are happy if you use less than a Groupon / KY3 voucher's value - but I guess paying extra for sweet sauce is the only way you get sauce for the crab rangoons (see menu confusion, above) anyway so... HyVee had a $5 pint special & Crab Rangoon special, probably a better choice in this price range.

Yelp
I pulled up to this fine establishment in my trust steed after getting my mop chopped next door at Hudson & Hawk. They opened the door for me as soon as I walked up, which of course made me feel like a king, so I roared out an order for a General chicken combo with Crabrangoon at once! And man they were ready, because it wasn't 2 minutes before I had my food in front of me. Not to mention someone was reading my mind because it was all white meat and I didn't even have to specify, they just knew, impressive. The restaurant was very clean and the staff (or servants if you truly are a king) are on the ball and they are very kind (and loyal). Ok I've made my point about feeling like royalty after having the door opened for me, but for real this is what a Springfield Cashew Chicken restaurant is supposed to be like. Great prices, good portions, and a friendly staff, you can't ask for much more.

Amber W.

Yelp
Giving 2 stars for one reason only: The girl at the window was very prompt and friendly. However, when I spend almost $10 on a meal, that doesn't even come with a drink, I expect much better quality. The chicken was incredibly dry. It had likely sat out for a long long time under a warmer. And since it literally took 30 seconds to get my order after I handed her my card, I know it wasn't made to order. I was so disappointed in this meal. Worst Chinese I have ever had. Also, the sweet and sour came with green onions which was a very gross addition to this flavor. The crab Rangoon were very chewy and obviously had been under a warmer for a long time as well. So nothing tasted fresh, hot, or enjoyable. Everything was gross. For the price you charge for a meal with 5 pieces of chicken, it should at least be fresh. Good restaurants will toss out the chicken after a certain amount of time.

Yelp
We have lived in the Springfield area for almost 15 years. I've been eating food much longer than that. Last night we picked up food through the drive-through and feel we owe it to the community to share our experience. This very well might be one of the worst meals we've ever purchased. The S/S chicken came with a small amount of sauce already on the chicken- not with sauce on the side like the rest of the globe. Dry, tough, and chewy. The Crab Rangoons were cold and filled with what tasted like just cream cheese mixed with onion powder. Fried rice was tasteless. The egg drop soup was really the capper. The soup was almost clear (not yellow like you'd expect), and came with a 'layer' of what was assumed to be egg at the bottom. It basically tasted like watered-down onion broth, and lacked any of the richness that one would expect. The employees were about as caring to us as Trump is to our veterans. On the upside, if you need some roughage to put into your garbage disposal, this might be your place. On the other hand, you could skip the hassle and gas and just toss a $20 bill in there. #neveragain

Yelp
Had combination lo Mein with shrimp and chicken. Unfortunately noodles were deranged in chicken stock and chicken itself was tasteless. Only thing tasted nice was shrimps.

Yelp
Honestly probably one of the worst Chinese food places around. I don't know how it had gotten such a cult like following. It seemed everyone who lived in, or around the Woodgate apartments went there when it was on Sunshine. I also remember lot's of people going there when it was by Drury. The chicken always seemed like dry rubber, and the sauce was watery, and sour. I wouldn't even tell anyone to honestly even "try it."

Yelp
A really nice half lunch of all white meat chicken in Springfield cashew chicken. Service is excellent for a quick hitter, they bring to your table and bus away dishes. A well kept secret.

Maggie C.

Yelp
I love this place- it's my favorite Chinese restaurant in Springfield and is my first choice whenever I'm in the mood for some good Springfield cashew chicken. I've been coming here for years and the food never disappoints.

Christa B.

Yelp
I know a lot of people live this place but the only thing that I can eat is the spring rolls. The chicken is gross, the rice is gross, it's under seasoned. I got egg drop soup once and I can't imagine it could get much worse.
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
No what I expected after reading reviews. Rice was dry and hard, so was the general chicken.

Rebekah F.

Yelp
Ordered at the counter for dine in service had to leave a tip on my credit card which is dumb when they don't come check on you or wait on you. They bring your food then your on your own. Ordered cashew chicken it was EXTREMELY salty it was the worse experience for cashew chicken in the Springfield area. Will NOT be going back again.

Glory W.

Yelp
Don't go. We're new to Springfield area and have been trying different Chinese restaurants to find a favorite. We've been told that Springfield Chinese food is different from other parts of the country. However, this place served pure slop! Hubby spit out the eggroll - I smelled it and wouldn't even try it probably would have made us sick). Rice was old and tasteless. The spicy/hot sauce for the chicken was tasteless - if it weren't for a few pepper flakes there would be no flavor at all. The young brunette that took our order and served us deserves to work in a better place - she was helpful, friendly, efficient and knew the menu.

Tom S.

Yelp
The best cashew chicken this side of Missouri. The only good place outside Springfield is Disney World at Epcot.

Yelp
Lucy's was a breath of fresh air in an over wise grungy city. The building was interesting, and the name "Lucy's" didn't exactly make me thing Chinese Cuisine. Boy was I wrong. The food was superb, quality was delightful and the staff was super friendly. Their combo platters are a good deal too. If you are looking for Pei Wei or something similar at a reduced cost, this is the place for you. I would not hesitate to stop in again.

Bridget K.

Yelp
Mediocre chinease food. Had sweet and sour chicken. Husband had general tsos. He likes it spicy but it was sweet.

L W.

Yelp
Basic food. Not terrible. Not the greatest. Over. Priced. Way overpriced, for such little food. Nice employees, but the cost! Go elsewhere.

Yelp
Best food, customer service at either location and serving size! Love me some Lucy's!!
google avatar

Drew B.

Yelp
The customer service here is amazing! The food was great, this is definitely on our favorites list for Chinese!
google avatar

Sanya H.

Yelp
Service was awesome. Both girls ( one with blond hair and other with dark long curly hair) were so nice and helpful. Food was quick. Portions slightly smaller than normal. Food so so. I would eat there again. Sweet tea was perfect!!
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
I had the cashew chicken and the chicken wasn't very good. For white meat chicken they should consider getting a better quality of chicken. Everything else was ok.
google avatar

Tracy C.

Yelp
Just had to laugh at myself. Noticed KY3 just offered another half price deal for this place. I love those kinds of deals so last time I bought 3. We used one at each of the restaurants. The quantity of the food is minimal. The South Campbell food was okay at best but personally I thought the lo mein was far better than the raved Cashew Chicken. The Central location food was nasty. The oil the food was prepared in had a wang ( excuse the pun ). At the Sunshine store we tried the pepper steak. It was good but as mentioned earlier, over priced even with discount.

Yelp
This used to be a great place to get chinese food, but has gone downhill. The portians have gotten smaller and prices have increased.

Yelp
Nice and fresh but cashew not spicy. However great twist on their egg drop soup

Travis M.

Yelp
Lucy's !! The only place you can order Hot Chicken!! I really love the Cashew Chicken all white meat, but nothing compares to Hot Chicken!! Get a dozen Fried Wontons too. The Wonton Skins are super light and flakey. Lucy's is the best Chinese food in Springfield

Abbie A.

Yelp
Lucys is a must to try! I love the hot chicken, it's non breaded chicken mixed in with bell peppers and onions. I also love there chicken fried rice and cashew combo with a choice of crab Rangoon, egg roll or wontons with your meal. Good portion of food for the price you pay. Staff is always helpful and friendly which makes my dining experience a pleasure. Lucys remains on my list of places to eat in Springfield!

Nick B.

Yelp
Horrible. I ordered two child's sweet and sours chickens and chicken lomein for $20. The price caught me off guard but I was already at the drive thru so I of course made my purchase. Got home to enjoy my over priced chicken and was more than displeased. The chicken was poor quality and small in portion for $5.50, even for a kids order. The lo mein was nothing more than spaghetti noodles and chicken chunks, no flavor, horrible. I eat Chinese all over springfield and this was the only experience that frustrated me enough to download this app and make a complaint.

Paul W.

Yelp
Been coming here for 20 years. Best cashew & sweet/sour chicken in town. Love this place and highly recommenced it.

Phillip R.

Yelp
Very bland food, where the most noticeable flavor is the salt. Standard dishes, but really not that expansive of a menu. I usually do not add seasoning to my food at Chinese restaurants, but I found myself adding duck sauce to my chicken. The wonton soup was a joke. But it wasn't funny. I have had much better Chinese food at other establishments, and ho-hum restaurants like Lucy's become white noise. The waitress was very nice, though. She deserves to work in a higher class place.
