My kid has mentioned Lucy's Diner many times when she was living here and in her last years of high school, saying her friends and her have gone here many times for milkshakes and fries, often super late at night. She's often mentioned how the food here is quite good and the place is open 24/7. So it's been on my radar for a while, to come here, as I love diner food.
Today was the day.
I was surprised by how tiny the diner interior was. Like, super tiny. But it was clean. And when I say it was authentically retro, I mean it; it's not pretending to be retro, it actually is. The linoleum, the table and booth finishes, the brushed aluminum, the counter and bar stools.... it's all real and all old. Worn, with character. The walls, painted a hospital green, with large photos depicting a family in the 1950's, as well as bicycle handles mounted on high. Cake stands covered by glass cloches on the counter bar, full of cookies and pies. All that was missing was a waitress named Flo.
Reading the reviews here, I was surprised to read how low all the prices are, as I was taken aback by how high the prices were (for diner fare). $10+ for a milkshake, $19.99+ for a burger and most meals. I guess that's the going rate nowadays, but don't expect to come here and get meals for a steal. It ain't happening.
So how is the food, you may ask. Damn good! I heard their breakfast foods were terrific, but we were there at lunch-time, so I ordered a classic BLT with fries on the side, and my friend ordered a Cobb salad. (See my photos). Traditional diner "comfort" food. Portions were very hearty, and all our food was fresh. My sandwich was great, with the sourdough bread perfectly toasted and lots of bacon, perfectly cooked. They sure aren't scrimping on bacon (which was nice to see!). And I don't usually eat fries, but these were TERRIFIC: not greasy in the least, crunchy outside, soft inside. My friend and I both loved the fries. And her salad was chock-full of bacon, too, with fresh produce and feta and hard-boiled eggs. We both loved our meals.
Service was slow but there's only one lady serving everyone, and she was nice, too. We figured, there's probably only one cook in the back, too. So...not that speedy, but not the worst.
My friend said the bathroom in the rear was clean and had "typical kitschy diner decor". (I didn't check it out so I've no photos).
There was lots of metered street parking out front on Main Street.
This place is a little rough around the edges, but the food is good, and if you need your diner "fix", especially late at night or in the wee hours of day, this is a great go-to place.
