Alert: If you're a woman of color, think twice before you walk into this store.
I went to Americana yesterday to check out the Dr. Jart+ pop-up. The line was too long and it was way too hot, so I decided to stop by the Lululemon store across the street. I wish I hadn’t. I picked up a new item and asked one of the staff, a woman with long, curled hair dyed at the ends, if they had matching long pants in the same color. She barely looked at me, gave a flat “no,” and walked straight to the back. No effort to help. No conversation. Nothing.
It felt cold and dismissive. The store wasn’t busy, this was around 1 or 2 p.m. so it wasn’t about being overwhelmed. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was being judged for how I looked, what I was wearing, or maybe just the fact that I didn’t fit their usual customer mold. Either way, I didn’t feel welcome at all.
So I left.
If you don’t match the 'look' they seem to expect, don’t be surprised if you’re treated like you don’t belong.
