Cambodian Americans Are Ready to Share Their Cuisine, On Their Terms

"The Cambodian American culinary landscape is evolving alongside a new food movement in Cambodia itself. Siem-Reap based food writer, Lara Dunston, calls it the “New Cambodian Cuisine Movement.” She points to chefs like Sothea Seng of Lum Orng, Pola Siv of Banlle Cafe, Mengly Mork of the now-closed Pou Restaurant, who are “consciously experimenting and endeavoring to create a new kind of cuisine.”"

Went here for my boyfriend’s birthday dinner and it was also my first time dining at a Khmer fine dining restaurant! All of the food was amazing and the price for the set was so reasonable too given it’s quite fancy. The atmosphere of the restaurant was cozy and you can feel the Khmer heritage too. However, the location is a bit annoying to get to, maybe because we went in the evening and there were no lights on the road. But it makes it a nice and calm atmosphere at the restaurant because of it. I would definitely go again and bring my friends and family next time!

Flawless! The food was delicious, the service was brilliant and the staff were so knowledgeable about the food and wine. So much thought and preparation had gone into this. They also catered the menu for both my and my friend's dietary requirements. Brilliant!

My friends and I came here and we were very impressed with the food! The scallops, duck, frog legs, and chicken cake were highlights. Honestly, it might be one of the best tasting menus I've had. Just make sure to make a reservation ahead of time!

**Stumbled Upon a Hidden Gem (That’s Apparently Not So Hidden)** So there I was, enjoyed a bumpy ride with my dining crew to this “off-the-beaten-path” restaurant that turned out to be about as secret as a Kardashian pregnancy. One peek at the menu and I realized I wasn’t the first food explorer to discover this place – judging by the identical photos from years past, this spot has been Instagram-famous longer than avocado toast. Fair warning: the portions here are what I like to call “European elegant” (translation: bring snacks). Unless you’re planning to survive on good vibes and artistic plating, I would suggest a strategic pre-dinner appetizer at home. Think of it as culinary foreplay. The service comes with complimentary photobombing – the server had an uncanny ability to appear in every single shot like some sort of dining paparazzi. Note to management: maybe teach the staff the ancient art of “duck and cover” when phones or camera come out? Despite feeling like I had been pranked by every food blogger before me, the experience was solid enough to earn a return visit. I’ll be back when they inevitably roll out their “new” seasonal menu (fingers crossed it doesn’t look suspiciously familiar too).

I love the concept of farm to table. Overall this was a fun experience. Me and my boyfriend came in during low season for lunch, so the place was nearly empty. I don’t eat fish and my boyfriend wasn’t eager for the frog legs, changing those wasn’t a problem. The duck was great, so was the chicken and the fish. We enjoyed the wine, and found the price for the amount of wine you get to be very fair. The place itself is very cute, a bit out of the way but still close enough to the center of Siem Reap. Service was also good. Some dishes were just okay, some were good, but overall we had a great time in this rainy afternoon. The only thing we both didn’t like was the coffee, but it was on the house anyway so cant complain. I do recommend if you feel like doing something a bit different, outside the touristy pub street and the city center.

Never disappointed when dining at Lum Orng. I first discovered this place two years ago, thanks to a friend, and my recent visit confirmed it’s still a standout. This time, they offered a 7-course set menu with a wine pairing option. To our delight, they even served an extra starter for us to try! We skipped the wine pairing since we had to work later, but it’s on the list for next time— I will definitely be back soon. The food is a fusion of flavors, inspired by local cuisines with an international twist, making it truly unique in town. Highly recommend visiting, but don’t forget to book in advance!

Aside from a relatively long and bumpy road to the restaurant (recommend taking a car), the experience was amazing. What felt like a tucked away in the jungle was hiding a modern Cambodian fine dining restaurant. Beautiful surroundings and the style of the restaurant. Chef's table experience was a delight. The chef talked to us during the dinner, shared his background and knowledge and of course finished off and served the meal. Everything tasted great and unique. Would absolutely recommend the restaurant to learn about and experience Cambodian cuisine. Tips: They do accept card for payment and 10% service charge included in final bill.

I had dinner at Lum Orng Restaurant yesterday, and it was a truly memorable experience. From the moment I arrived, the ambiance was warm, elegant, and inviting—perfect for a relaxing evening. The food was exceptional. Every dish was beautifully presented and packed with rich, authentic Cambodian flavors with a creative twist. You can truly feel the passion behind the farm-to-table concept. My favorite was the Chicken Cake, the soup is amazing, which was bursting with freshness and perfectly balanced. The service was also top-notch. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive without being intrusive. They made excellent recommendations and ensured everything went smoothly throughout the meal. I highly recommend Lum Orng to anyone visiting Siem Reap or looking to experience modern Cambodian cuisine at its finest.
