The king James suite was magical , quiet , carpeted and finished with amazing details. Lovely upholstery and seating. I wish there had been a microwave/ frig though Dinner was simply outstanding and every dish and cocktail impressed. The bed was comfortable and so were the pillows It was nice to have a bathtub. The large doors were stunning. This was a birthday treat for me. ( I'm 5 days younger than Diana would have been)

Was there for wedding. Excellence in every category.Fantastic, cheerful and professional staff who took a real pride in their work. Spotless rooms. Dog friendly room, and relaxed dog friendly space in bar. Stupendous venue for a wedding. Front desk were 100 per cent attentive and responsive. Food excellent and served piping hot all day. Great selection of wine and spirits (no jokes about the resident poltergeist)in bar with great teas and coffees on request. and bar and event service was uniformly top class.Special mention for breakfast service and food. I have never seen fresher continental breakfast, and nothing was too much trouble, even though the hotel was rammed with guests. I asked for well cooked bacon and sausage..they came fast and cooked perfectly. Please don't change anything, and pass on my thanks to every person there.

First time here. Staff were friendly and very helpful. The grounds are stunning. The rooms and the hotel are very clean and very well maintained. The slight issue that I had was that the rooms were hot even with the windows open, would benefit from portable fans in the room. The cooked breakfast is overpriced for the price

We stayed one night at Lumley Castle Hotel, booking just a few hours in advance. There was only one room left — a Classic Castle Room with two single beds. The room was quite small, and while the beds were short, they were surprisingly comfortable. The shower had excellent water pressure, which exceeded our expectations. The overall appearance of the hotel and room was clean and well-kept, though we did notice that the headboards were loose and there was quite a bit of dust behind them. Still, the atmosphere throughout the castle was charming and unique. The staff were exceptionally friendly and welcoming. Dinner at the on-site restaurant was a highlight — the food was much better than expected and reasonably priced given the quality. Parking could be a bit tricky if there’s a wedding or event taking place, but otherwise it’s manageable. The hotel itself is incredibly quiet, making for a peaceful and restful night’s sleep. Breakfast the next morning was well-organized and enjoyable. Overall, a pleasant and memorable stay in a very atmospheric setting.

Had a lovely nights stay at Lumley Castle. We were visiting Durham and the position was perfect, set in lovely countryside. The castle itself was amazing, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was perfect, with plenty of choice. The only ‘downside’ is because of the size of the place, our room took some navigating! Heartily recommend, and definitely would return if in the area again. (Lyon)

If you want luxury with history, this is your place! Who doesn't want to stay in a castle! Pretty much everything was excellent. This place is amazing and steeped in history. For what I paid I feel I got incredible value. I'm planning to come back here soon and stay in the actual castle, this time I stayed in a superior courtyard room and it was incredible. Thanks for everything guys, I will be back! Oh, I thought I'd say, I was staying here for work and I'm quite a scruffy guy, but I got no different treatment from any of the staff and no weird looks. I did feel I was a little under dressed, but they still made me feel comfortable. I forgot to mention the restaurant and bar! The restaurant was a little on the pricey side, but for the quality of the food, I didn't feel overcharged at all. If I had to give anything that I didn't like, it would be that the duvet was a little too warm for me and the rooms aren't soundproofed the best, so I heard people going to bed and getting up again in the morning. Both things are very minor and I still had a great time and an amazing sleep on the 4 poster bed with a massive mattress

Our first visit to the Castle and we will certainly return. Lovely bedroom, very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was amazing as were all the staff. Dinner in the Knights Restaurant had a wide choice if a little pricey but you won't be disappointed with the choice or quality. Hotel is very well placed for exploring the area and cities close by. All in all a wonderful 3 nights break.

Stayed at Lumley Castle as a treat for our wedding anniversary and as a stop-over for Beamish Museum. Lumley Castle was everything we hoped it would be. As an avid review reader I was really impressed by some of the feedback. I have given 5 stars as the hotel met all of our expectations. We decided to upgrade and take a room in the castle. Room 49, Sir Ralphs suite. It was great, from the four poster bed to the quirkiness of a bathroom through the wardrobe, we were blown away. Its all you would expect from a castle, close, low ceiling corridors and squeaky floors just add to the atmosphere. Paintings and statues adorn every nook and cranny. There was just too much for us to do and take in on our one night stay, I just wish I could give more detail about the castle itself but we were goosed after a full day at Beamish so really didn't do the full castle walk around. The staff, from booking in to leaving the following morning, were all excellent and very friendly and when I say staff I include the cleaners who let us view The Queen Anne Suite, what an outstanding room! We had dinner and breakfast booked in the Knights Restaurant, both meals were excellent, a great choice for the evening meal and breakfast was just something else, a fantastic selection to start your day! A big thank you to all the lovely, friendly staff for making our short stay so memorable. Will we return? without doubt, maybe a little longer next time? Two very happy guests.

Yelp
Once you're over the novelty of staying at an actual castle, it's plain to see that the establishment has a lot of flaws especially when it involves service. The staff, although mostly pleasant, don't seem to be fully switched on. The waitress in the Library Bar could only offer me Jack Daniels when I asked about their selection of whiskeys. I later found they had a selection after checking with the bartender (whilst moaning about pulling a double-shift that weekend). The service was also painfully slow and I got the impression that the staff didn't really enjoy their jobs. OK it's a castle so it's meant to be old but the interiors could really do with some updating. I honestly thought I was an extra at Fawlty Towers but maybe this could be put down to its charm. It's certainly a Mecca for weddings! The only saving grace was the food at the Black Knight restaurant. My wife and I were relieved there was something to shout about. The steak and lamb dishes were sublime and the desserts too made quite the impact!

Yelp
Fantastic Experience! We stayed at Lumley for a murder mystery night and it was a great night. The hotel is very well decorated, to me it was exactly how a stately castle should be decorated with big portraits with ornate frames and statues and a labyrinth of different sitting rooms. It is exactly the sort of ambience you want if you decided to stay in a castle. We stayed in the castle as opposed to the courtyard and were very happy with our room with super high ceilings and big poofy bed. We felt it was very in character to the experience. The place was busy with two weddings, and our murder mystery event, but still comfortable. I loved wandering all the stately rooms at night when the lights were low and the castle was quiet, felt like I was living the game "Clue". I'll take a second to brag about the deal we got as well: - Nice room in the castle with a bottle of champagne waiting on us. - Free wine at the murder mystery reception - Three course meal and the murder mystery performance - Breakfast the next morning all for £99 a person! I'm looking forward to going back for an Elizabethan banquet!

Yelp
normally I'd reserve a 5-star review for a modern hotel with outstanding amenities, but Lumley Castle deserves it due to the rich, historic feel and high standards. it seems more of a destination hotel since it's a bit far from Durham Center. I was attending events in Durham for a few days and it was expensive going back and forth in a taxi. so 5 stars for the hotel experience, but be warned it's not really convenient to Durham Center It really is a castle, 700 years old, and preserved beautifully. I had a room in one of the wings of the castle and the bedroom was old fashioned but with medieval-looking furnishings. supposedly the castle is haunted and you do hear a lot of creaking during the night, but that just adds to the ambiance (in my opinion). the public rooms are very interesting, like living inside a museum. I didn't have dinner in the restaurant, but had breakfast twice and high tea in the library room and was very satisfied with the food quality, service and value. the prices on the dinner menu seems rather high and since a taxi into Durham center is about 15 pounds, you're sort of stuck here. my only complaint was being charged 30 pounds for a late checkout. late, meaning 2.5 hours, but I suppose it's in the agreement so it's their right to do it. but it seems a bit excessive.

Yelp
The castle is beautiful, the food was tasty and the bar library was cosy However this is a hotel and the room wasn't worth the money Would I return, yes but I would select a better room than the one I got last time
