Finally had the opportunity to try Luna Azul In Seattle's Greenwood neighborhood.
There's a few tables and counter seating in the front, but more booths towards the back of the former La Botana location.
Friendly staff and clearly well patronized by friends and extended family. Lots of greetings coming in and leaving the restaurant. Solo diners, up to groups of 8, including families were there during this visit.
Started with a Pacifica ($4), notable wide range of beverages available, and chips and salsa ($3.50, not charged on bill) while waiting for the entrées.
Entrées clearly are cooked to order with fresh, flavorful ingredients. Nothing is smothered by cheese. Pair of chicken enchiladas with tomatillo sauce and pair of cheese enchiladas with red mole sauce, both with moist rice and tasty beans. Really enjoyed the latter, delicious black beans! Both entrées selected were $11 each.
I'm a newbie to posole, I've only tried it at some chichi place in Ballard, Hi-Life also in Ballard, and Hecho in Phinney Ridge. Wanted to try it as a cup ($4.50) but ended up with an entire bowl complete with tortillas, onions, cilantro, avocado slices, and lime wedges. Served piping hot with toothsome hominy, generous tender chunks and shredded bits of pork, all in a pleasant broth where the predominant note of oregano. However, I should have been charged $9 instead.
Too full to try the Tres Leches, their version of Tres Leches Flan, or interesting looking Flower Jello. Next time, for sure!
Slight miscues were no followup during our meal after the entrées and posole were brought to our table. That meant no more ice water refills for me. Kind of forgotten seated in the back, so had to go to the counter to pay the bill.
And of course the undercharges for chips and salsa and the posole. After writing this at a nearby cafe, will stop by and drop off a pair of Lincolns to make up for this deficit...got to pay fair market price for well executed food overall! They're so new, that the receipt still has their predecessor's name on it. Clearly, the entire crew at Luna Azul are succeeding at this turnkey operation with their vision of flavorful home cooking.
Updated: Stopped by 2 1/2 hours later and turns out chips and salsa are free when dining in. But I insisted on them taking the single Lincoln to make up for the full order of posole. Again, nice folks, delicious cuisine!
