Where to Stay in Melbourne During Your Visit (Updated 2025)

"I enjoyed Luna Park in St. Kilda — it's fun for all ages and notable for being the world's oldest theme park, making it a must-see family attraction on the waterfront." - Matthew Kepnes

First time at Luna Park in more than a decade, good fun. Took a ride on the Scenic Railway, which was great to see it's still running after more than 100 years! The Ghost Train left a lot to be desired - a shadow of what it used to be - little to see inside for much of the ride - being back the daggy uv paintings and jump scare staff!! Wait time for the Scenic Railway was 45 min, and about an hour for the Ghost Train. Park was busy - fully booked a d three kids birthday parties on the day we were there, but staff were great and no one was unhappy with the wait times. Recommended for a day out - but book ahead.

Went to Luna Park Melbourne last weekend for the first time and honestly had a fantastic time. The rides were fun, everything worked perfectly, and it felt like the kind of day you actually remember because it wasn’t chaotic for once. Im a teenager and a big thrill seeker and I thought the rides here were a perfect mix of thrill and fun which I love and so did my 11 year old sister. Although the scenic railway and dodgems were closed the other rides were awesome. Also great rides for younger kids that are not as scary Big shout out to James the ride operator, he was on the spider when I first got to the park and he really hyped me up, he’s friendly, funny, and just the right amount of entertaining for kids and adults. If the rides stopped he could keep the fun and Luna Park vibes up easy. Overall great rides, good energy, and a memorable day. Definitely worth the visit

Luna Park proved to be a truly enjoyable destination, offering a clean, vibrant, and family-friendly atmosphere from the moment we arrived. The park has clearly put effort into maintaining its grounds and facilities, creating a welcoming environment where visitors of all ages can relax and have fun. Whether you’re visiting with young children, teenagers, or adults who love a bit of nostalgia, there is something here for everyone to enjoy. One of the standout qualities of Luna Park was the staff. Every team member we encountered was upbeat, approachable, and genuinely eager to help. Their positive energy added to the overall experience and made the day feel even more special. From ride operators who were patient with excited kids to attendants who happily provided information or assistance, the staff played a big role in creating a smooth and cheerful visit. If you are planning a trip, I highly recommend arriving in the morning. Getting there early makes a noticeable difference in wait times for rides, allowing you to fit in more attractions before the larger crowds begin to appear. The early hours also have a relaxed feel, giving families plenty of time to explore at their own pace, enjoy the classic rides, take photos, and grab snacks without rushing. The variety of rides and attractions means there’s always something to look forward to. Thrill-seekers can enjoy the iconic roller coasters, while younger children can explore the gentler rides and whimsical spaces designed just for them. The atmosphere is lively but never overwhelming, and the sense of tradition mixed with modern fun gives the park a unique charm. Overall, Luna Park is a delightful outing for families and groups looking for a clean, enjoyable, and well-organised experience. It’s a place where laughter comes easily, memories are made, and the fun feels effortless.

Google
Good family fun! We visited last night and spent 3 hours in the park, until it shut at 10pm. We’re a family with 3 older teenagers and there’s enough more grown up rides there to keep them occupied. They did some of the bigger rides 2 or 3 times. The queues for most rides were only 10 mins, apart from the sky rollercoaster type ride, which was a 45 mins wait!

Google
Luna Park Melbourne is fun if you’re looking for a throwback, carnival-style amusement park. The heritage roller coaster is a standout, and the park has a quirky, vintage vibe that families and tourists might enjoy. It’s a great spot for kids or for those wanting a more laid-back experience—not a high-adrenaline thrill park. However, some of the rides feel outdated, and the pricing can feel steep considering the size and condition of the park. Queues get long on weekends, and a few rides are sometimes closed without clear notice. It’s charming in its own way, but don’t expect modern theme park standards. Still worth a visit if you’re in the area, but probably more for the atmosphere and photos than for the rides themselves.

Google
We absolutely loved our day at Luna Park. Relived our teenage years by going on all the rides. Value for money. Staff took safety very seriously.

Google
Luna Park wasn’t as big as I expected and felt a bit limited, but overall it’s not a bad option for a weekend plan, especially if you have kids. The food wasn’t good at all, so I’d recommend leaving Luna Park and going to a restaurant nearby instead of eating there.

Google
An iconic Melbourne experience and a must-visit in St Kilda. Luna Park is so much fun, with a great mix of classic and thrilling rides. The $55 unlimited rides pass is great value and lets you make the most of the park. Perfect for all ages and full of nostalgia — loved it! 🎡✨

Yelp
This is probably one of those classic seaside amusement parks, and honestly, while I'm not particularly big on such places, it is still a rather fun place to go with friends. In fact, this is basically one of those ts Kilda icons and it has been around for ages. In fact I remember coming here as a kid, and going on the rollarcoaster with my Mum. Yeah, this place really does have some history, and the rollar coaster is literally heritage listed (and still operational, in normal times that is). It's definitely worth checking out, unless you aren't an amusement park type of person that is.

Yelp
My friend and I were visiting from the states and she insisted that we visit both Luna Parks. So, it's not that fair to compare this one with Sydney's, but it is a lot smaller and a bit dingier. We did come during the day that was about to turn stormy, so it was definitely overcast and not very crowded at all. I also thought the cost per ride was higher than expected. The views from the top of the Ferris wheel were very nice though! But I don't think this is a must see stop.

Yelp
Luna Park really is everything that you would expect from a theme park and more. The tickets are extortionately overpriced. The food is hideous. The games arcade is a total rip-off. Squealing children and frantic parents abound. The rides are pretty underwhelming: I challenge you to ride the Gravitron without feeling hideously sick. The roller-coasters are short and sweet, to say the least. And as Stephanie pointed out, the ghost train could not be less scary if it tried. BUT this is what makes it all so awesome. Luna Park is an unashamedly trashy experience, and proud of it. This place is a true Melbourne icon.

Yelp
This is probably the last time I went there, on my own will and money. All starts with a new regime where we now have to pay to enter and wear silly wristbands. It looks like a controlled zone I was almost expecting them to ask for tax on my own food we brought. No small cans of soft drinks only half-litre. Wish there was horeca format (250ml) which is green because aluminium not PET The Ferris wheel took two quick loops and asked us off "because weighting". No photos from up there either. Staff are not happy, probably underpaid? I don't think the owners care. They have enough clients I guess. Pity. I wish the shebang was placed under new management who cares about customer experience not just profits. As for now, never again. There are parks like this in suburbs, just not Looney like this one.

Yelp
One of the cultural and traditional landmarks of Melbourne is the fun park for all ages, Luna Park. Located in the best part of town, opposite the Esplanade in bay side St Kilda the big moon face entrance is known the world over and has brought joy to generations of people for almost 100 years. You'd be doing yourself a disservice if you came to Melbourne without getting your photo taken in the mouth of moon face, or if you didn't get to experience first hand the exuberant and carnival like atmosphere of this historic fun park. And being a mother I have to disagree that the tickets are overpriced; compared to the Royal Melbourne Show and other theme parks it's extremely affordable. From $40 you can spoil your 5-11 year old with unlimited amusement park fun. The Scenic Railway is one of the original attractions and still operates around the entire perimeter of the park, giving riders the golden ticket view of St Kilda beach. The Magic Mirrors making your legs taller, body stumpier or face alien like can keep the whole family completely amused and entertained for longer than you'll realise, and show alley games such as the moving clown faces are hits with pre-schoolers, especially as they are guaranteed a prize at the end of every game! Luna Park has managed to retain its historic charm from yesteryear and puts me in mind of what theme parks would have looked like in the fifties. Game and park attendants wear old style carnival costumes, and a little train that operates around the park all add to the spark that makes Luna Park magical, regardless of what age you are. Luna Park is one of those places that can be enjoyed by all ages, but I really love that kids as young as two or three can enjoy and partake in a lot of the fun and show rides, unlike many other theme or fun parks. Whether you're a thrill seeker, enjoy basking in the carnival like atmosphere of a great theme park, or simply want to experience a part of Melbourne come come COME to Luna Park! And don't go through Moonface's mouth without getting your photo taken first!

Hamish M.

Yelp
I had the kids last weekend and took them here. Now I know its not a gold coast theme park, but we had a great time. The place hasn't changed since when I was a kid, but its just good plain old simple fun!

Yelp
a nice local park, free admission! Ride ticket can be bought online with discount! Perfect for a walk before going to St Kilda Beach! I love the photo booth in the arcade there!!

Yelp
The big mouth entrance to Luna Park conjures memories of growing up in Melbourne during the summer. Walking through those shiny red lips and giant teeth still gets me in the mood to ride the spider ride and the scenic railway. Sure, many of the rides at luna park have been there for over 20 years, and the ghost train is probably the least scary ghost train I've ever ridden in my life, but its still a great afternoon out- and so much fun to go with friends for something different to do, or even better to go with kids! Entrance is free, but you pay for each ride, game and attraction. My absolute favourite ride? Hard to decide, but maybe the carousel... it definitely brings out the little kid in me!

Yelp
Luna Park isn't just an icon of St. Kilda; it's an icon of Australia. Probably one of the biggest attractions for tourists coming to Melbourne, Luna Park is always a fun time for all ages. I do find it expensive as for an adult ticket it can cost around $45 on peak time. However, It's something you have to experience once in your life. You have to experience the rattles and genuine screams of all of the children fearing for their lives where you do have the feeling that a nut might fall off and it could be your last moments. It's part of the rustic charm I assure you. I always get thoroughly entertained by the guy who's job it is to stand in the middle of the carriages of the rollercoaster. What a job! Worth it if you've never experience Luna Park before.

Yelp
It is a good way to spend your weekend. Especially when you have accompanies. There are 8 of us and each one found their favorite game. Love the beach there too. The whole tour just took 3 to 4 hours. And during the sunset we enjoyed the beach. The roller coaster didn't work that day, and we got more than 12free tickets for it, however that's the one I hadn't experienced yet.

Yelp
Whether you live in Melbourne or you're visiting, I do recommend that you visit Luna Park at least once. It's sort of a "get it over with" kind of thing for the sake of saying that you've at least been there before. Pros: ~ For the most part, I did have a great time but it could have just been the good company. ~ The employees were fairly helpful. Nothing too out of the ordinary. ~ Great location right on St Kilda Beach. Even if you don't really enjoy the park, a day out on the beach or visiting other parts of St Kilda is a definite plus. Cons: ~ Way overpriced. Like seriously overpriced. OUTRAGEOUSLY overpriced to the point where you will blow a lot of money if you come here often. ~ Rides aren't bad, but they weren't amazing either. But it could just because it's not worth the money because they themselves weren't that bad. --- I don't mind Luna Park, it was a good time. Just keep in mind that your wallet might hate you afterwards.

Yelp
I went here for a corporate function. For this, Luna park was awesome. It i reviewed it as a whole as a amusement park then it would receive a different review all together. The fact that we had an event here, meant free entry, food, drinks and rides. It was really fun day out for Telstra Team day. Lots of events were on, we took a few rides, learn magic, juggling, listened to speakers and engaged with each other. It was a good day out and held really well. I wouldnt come back to Luna and pay to expereince it. It is the kind of place for familys with young kids.

Yelp
Seriously??? Went here on a Sunday afternoon with my brother & little nephews. Surprisingly it was busy - much busier than the last time I remember going there last. Especially looking at the prices to get on the rides. Places like SeaWorld, DreamWorld, etc are cheaper than this overrated place. Nostalgia is the only thing going for this place. Extortionist pricing could be another... We left soon after we turned up...

Matt A.

Yelp
As with all amusement parks, Luna Park makes children's heads explode with excitement. However, that's not necessarily a representation of the quality of rides or the thrilling atmosphere of the place itself... it's more about the idea of Luna Park, which I think is much better than the reality. Having said that, there are some great rides: the Mad Mouse is a classic - it's faster and scarier than it looks; the Enterprise is an old favourite (but looses it's excitement soon after the spinning wheel turns completely vertical); the Gravatron is thrilling simply for its apparent defiance of gravity (though it has been known to cause the occasional vomit to douse unsuspecting thrill seekers on the ride); but the Ranger is truly where it's at... making you feel like you could fall to your death at any moment. And of course, there's the wild and rocky Scenic Railway that runs the perimeter of the park (one of, if not the oldest rollercoaster in the country). What sucks about Luna Park is the fact that a single adult ride pass in $9.50... to go on ONE RIDE! But if money isn't an issue, there's a fair bit of fun to be had at Luna Park.

Yelp
Luna Park is a must see when coming to Melbourne. The small theme park right along the beach provides some great photo opportunities and is great fun for kids. My best mate, Sandy from Geelong works there which I guess makes her a carnie to a degree but I won't hold that against her. I usually find myself heading down to St Kilda on a Sunday arvo to meet up after her shift and walk around. I'm not the biggest fan of the rides but I'm also 20 and can't be bothered waiting on lines amongst children. In addition to this, I'm on a travelers budget and everything in the park is pretty expensive. Definitely go take a picture in front of Luna Park and enjoy the atmosphere that surrounds you and the excitement in the air. It's an easy 25 minute tram ride from the city and St Kilda's got tons of cafes, bars, clubs, venues, restaurants and so much more to offer to anyone and everyone.

Yelp
I enjoyed my time in Melbourne and the rides. It is not Disneyland, but it was certainly better than any place I can find in Sydney. I think it was good value for money, good customer service and there are plenty of places around to grab a bite to eat.

Yelp
Luna Park really is a Melbourne icon and if you are a tourist, I would definitely recommend checking it out and having your photo taken in front of the famed big mouth entrance. Inside though, it is your basic, standard, average theme park. It is quite pricey and the food etc is nothing to write home about. Some of the rides are getting on age wise which makes me nervous (I'm kind of crazy like that) but the kids seem to love it- screaming and hyperactivity abounds at Luna Park.

Yelp
Grew up going to this theme park and every time I still enjoy it like it was my first time going.

Yelp
The Luna Park venue spaces are located throughout the Park, commanding excellent views of all the fun of the fair. Featuring both large and accommodating spaces, or small and comfortable rooms, we have a venue to suit any event. Your guests will enjoy a mouth-watering selection of food and beverages. Luna Park also boasts outstanding service with an experienced and professional team that makes it the perfect venue space for any event.
