The Best City in the US for Shopping Is Exactly the One You Think It Is | Condé Nast Traveler

"Surviving three generations and a multimillion-dollar renovation, this Charleston menswear store sells Barbour jackets to men who hunt on inherited land, embodying a version of Southern gentility where heritage, field-ready clothing, and quiet affluence are central to the brand’s lasting appeal." - Paul Jebara

My husband and I were having no luck finding Ferragamo summer shoes for a last-minute vacation, as they were sold out everywhere. We were delighted to find them available at this store, which we’ve always loved visiting in Charleston. Shipping was fast and seamless, and the shoes arrived just in time. Excellent online shopping experience.

Google
Outstanding experience at Dumas. We walked in without a clear idea of what we wanted, and Krystain’s expertise immediately elevated the entire experience. His knowledge, thoughtful guidance, and attention to detail made the process effortless and enjoyable. Exceptional service — highly recommend ask for Krystain!

Google
Traveled to Charleston multiple times over three years to shop with Dumas for custom clothing. Along the way; I introduced multiple friends to the business. Unfortunately, I consistently experienced major delays and inaccuracies with my orders. They need to spend more time focusing on client specific details and less on pushing high end goods if they wish to preserve a concierge experience for their clientele. Steer clear and spend your $ elsewhere. There are plenty of custom clothiers who will deliver exemplary service and quality goods for equal $.

Google
I am 69 years old and recently lost 70 pounds. I needed to re wardrobe. This is the best mens clothing store I have ever been in. It certainly beats anything in Raleigh. I cant wait to go back. Great variety, quality.

John H.

Google
Ordered a bag online from this store that was sold out other places. Arrived quickly and was nicely packaged. Seems like this store cares about customers and wants repeat business. I plan to visit in-person next time I’m in Charleston.

Google
This is where Charlestonians shop. It offers a wide assortment of men's specialty brands. Lachlan and Rachel were knowledgeable and helpful. Excellent quality items with an informed sales team. We have been shopping here for years and we will be back.

Sandra L.

Google
Best men’s store ever. In addition to great lines of clothing customer service is above and beyond. Taylor “saved” a special jacket by ordering Eleventy buttons for me and I didn’t even buy the jacket from them. He went to the trouble to call the company to find the buttons and texted me back and forth as the status of my getting them before leaving on an upcoming trip. Beautiful clothes and exemplary customer service! Thank you Taylor!

Josh

Google
Excellent customer service from DuBose who could not have been more helpful. Purchased a polo here last summer and have now purchased two more. Great store and really good quality goods.

Yelp
One of the nicest stores for men clothing that I have been to anywhere. Great collection of styles from high end brands that aren't as well known, so they have great quality clothes at good prices. I would highly recommend coming here and checking their selection out. They have helpful salesmen that are super friendly and knowledgeable.
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
Purchased golf shirts on sale. They fitted well and felt comfortable when playing. Received compliments from players about the shirts.
google avatar

Jeff B.

Yelp
Great clothing store with classic styles available. Picking the right sales associate to assist you makes all the difference. We don't visit frequently but at least once a year. We typically purchase items that we take with us when leaving. However, on occasion we leave items for alterations and to be shipped later. Every experience has been positive.

Andy N.

Yelp
Great looking clothes and wide variety but pants seem to be limited to 32"+ inseams? I would have asked, and probably bought out half the store, but couldn't get the guys working there to pull their attention from their phones or talking to each other to actually acknowledge me. Unfortunate experience for a potential customer.

Yelp
I came in here on recommendation from the owner whom I met an hour before eating at Leyla. What a beautiful well stocked man's store. It reminds me of the small family run Department Stores at home (Ireland). It is high end with beautifully tailored suits pants, shirts, ties, socks, underwear, Bowties . Both from outside high end vendors & Dumas Tailoring itself. They have an amazing selection of quality men's shoes. Perfect place to go for an upcoming event for sure. It's pricey but they had fantastic sales going on, 70% off. How could you go wrong with that?! The decor here is casual with emphasis on water, fishing hunting. I spent about an hour here before my son had my wallet completely ravaged. I don't know about the other men's stores in Charleston but this one is truly a gem. Check it out!!

Mr Brooklyn R.

Yelp
Straight up rude. Was asking about black jeans. 'Oh that's something northerners are interested in'. Ok great that's me, guilty. 'No offense but you guys all dress so boring, it's all blacks and blues and grays'. Then points to my outfit: 'See?' I went to this store for some retail therapy, not to be insulted or judged. Whether it's true or not is irrelevant. I would never shop in a store whose salespeople think it's ok to put their customers down like this. Selection is good and seems like a nice store otherwise.
google avatar

Joe R.

Yelp
Excellent Men's store with excellent customer service. Packing for a wedding and realized everything I had felt a bit dated. One hour at this place with Abigail and she had me set up with some fantastic outfits. She was even able to rush my things through the tailor before I have to fly out mid-day tomorrow. They are truly a one-stop-shop with everything from casual tee-shirts and shirts to fine menswear and footwear. This will be my go-to going forward.
google avatar

Salt M.

Yelp
Meh. Mediocre store with average brands you can just order online. Not worth it, so many great stores in the wonderful city of Charleston, this just isn't one of them.
google avatar

Marty Y.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much from the outside, but they have the best brands for men's casual wear and amazing service. Highly recommend!!

Mark H.

Yelp
Bought shoes on line with express delivery. Money came out of my account, I received no shoes. I called and the woman in the shoe department said she could not help me but would have someone who could call me within 20 minutes. No call, no shoes, no refund and no help.
google avatar

Yelp
M Dumas & Sons is a great place to find men's clothing and shoes on King Street in Charleston. The clothes here are very Charleston and will have you ready to look good and fresh for all seasons. The store is large on the inside and has a great selection of all types of clothing from casual to business and everything in between. The staff here is extremely helpful in making sure that you find everything you need and will find something for you if need to locate something specific. The prices are really good here the quality of clothing they carry and there are always specials and sales to provide even more value. I have always had a good experience shopping here and there are many reasons to come back.
google avatar

Neal G.

Yelp
Ok if you like fine men's wear, this is the spot! George is awesome, please ask for him.
google avatar

Lawrence W.

Yelp
Dumas M & Sons is the foremost specialty store in the Charleston area dedicated to Southern Fashion for men (with a smaller selection for women) The Store was opened in 1917 and has developed into a premium local retailer for "Southern" clothing. The brands are heavy on the Eastern Seaboard look that has returned in the last decade and a preppy look that has always been present in the Holy City, especially with many Colleges in the local area. The store has many features with custom suit fitting and specialty clothing for any soiree or big event from the Carolina Cup to the quintessentially Southern, Kentucky Derby. I'd recommend a stop where y'all will get to experience the shopping days of times not forgotten.
google avatar

Christopher L.

Yelp
Nice little boutique with a great selection. I like that they run the gamut from dress clothes to casual and everything in between. I got a new shirt but saw plenty of jeans and belts that I liked. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Yelp
So sometime in 2009 I walked in to Dumas & Sons for the first time, at the behest of a friend, to buy my first seersucker suit. I was waited on hand and foot as we picked out some great bowties, a full seersucker, and some Sperrys to match. They knew I was leaving in a few days and so they did the alterations that day and I came back in an hour looking like a Yankee still, but came out looking like a Southern gentleman. Huge selection, attentive (probably commission-based) service, easy to find.
google avatar

Greg R.

Yelp
One of the best men's shops in the southeast. One of the largest selections of men's 'southern' styles. Service is great. I always make a point to stop and pick up a few things when I am in town.
google avatar

Kevin C.

Yelp
I've been going to Dumas for years, since I attended CofC back in the early 1990s. Made a quick stop in, hunting for a vest to accompany the many others hanging in my closet. The store is always a pleasure to go into. I immediately went to one of the racks packed with vests, found exactly what I wanted, and was swiftly helped by Taylor (who went as far as giving me his business card). Customer service at its best! And I happen to look fantastic in the vest to boot.
google avatar

Jordan T.

Yelp
This store is deceptively large. It's primarily for men, but there are some women's apparel in the mix as well. The most impressive part about this store was the amount of Barbour apparel they had. The selection was the largest I've seen in any store that wasn't an actual Barbour store. There was also a lot of Filson, which is a favorite brand of my husband's. Stop by if you appreciate quality outdoor wear--but expect to spend some money.
google avatar

Shawn B.

Yelp
The experience at this boutique men's shop leaves you feeling like the perfect gentleman. The staff are warm and hospitable, not too pushy, and on top of their game. The brands they carry are of the highest craftsmanship and forward-looking design. I'm looking forward to my return.
google avatar

Dorn M.

Yelp
Not one to spend a lot of effort on writing a review for a clothing store but I have to give bad marks if they are this poor. On two separate visits to Dumas I have left feeling like I never want to return. The sales staff at this pretentious little knob of a mens store seem to think laughing at you is the best way to get some sales. Avoid them and take your business elsewhere.
google avatar

Shari S.

Yelp
If you love preppy clothes done southern-style, M. Dumas & Sons is the place for you. I am always dazzled by their enormous selection of ice-cream hued seersucker clothes, needlepoint belts, generously cut button downs, Vilebrequin bathing suits, polo shirts with palmetto logos and covetable prep accoutrements. Heavenly and lots of fun - don't miss this!
google avatar

Mr T.

Yelp
Overpriced and pretentious. Note to stuffy staff: Working for an establishment that caters to wealthy clientele doesn't make you one of them - lose the attitude! I popped in wearing work-out clothes whilst doing a walk around Charleston and got the stink eye all the way to the back of the store. When I asked about having a pair of shoes made the only person who demonstrated any interest was the sales representative from the shoe company who just happened to be calling on the store that day. The rep found a young man from M Dumas who proved to be up-beat and helpful; he and the rep fit me and went over my custom options. I paid for the shoes and two months later a box arrived...The shoes were BEAUTIFUL! That notwithstanding and without going into too much detail; the shoes I received were wrong and M Dumas would not assist. The manufacturer stepped up and handled things but not without candidly dissing Dumas. BTW Billy Dubya, $75 for a polo shirt IS NOT a good price!
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Unbelievably disappointing visit to this merchant. Salesman who greeted us at the door was rude and arrogant. After finding this store via Southern Tides website, we were beyond disappointed in the treatment we received. Too bad for Mr Duma as we found excellent service at Vineyard Vines and Tommy Bahama on King St, Charleston and made our purchases at those locations.
google avatar

AJ S.

Yelp
Oh, so THIS is where Charleston men buy their clothes. Seriously, I love this place if just for its endorsement of that style so specific to Rich Dudes of the Lowcountry. Come here for: polos with palmettos on the breast salmon-colored pants those canvas belts with the fishes on them bowties in prints that you'd think would clash with everything but look surprisingly stylish when you're wearing them and whatever else you might need to blend in with the natives. Your shopping bag will have a duck-hunting scene on it. Oh please.
google avatar

Colleen M.

Yelp
Dumas was an accidental find while walking through the shopping district in Charleston. We stumbled in expecting to browse and left with a new seersucker suit and several Southern Proper ties, as well as the odd Vineyard Vines item. Controlled chaos best defines Dumas. Walking in the door, it looked like a madhouse. We figured we'd never find anything and certainly never get any customer service help. We were very wrong about that. We found plenty and the service was fantastic. Indeed, they had to be quite the salesmen to have talked the Mister into replacing his seersucker suit on a whim. They tailored the pants in store and mailed it all back to us in Virginia. Prices were reasonable and, while the atmosphere was much more casual than Brooks Brothers, the service results were just as good. It's been three seersucker seasons and the suit is holding up well. The bow ties have been worn countless times and the Vineyard Vines shorts make regular appearances in the summertime. I wish there was a place like this near us - where you can get everything from a suit to fishing gear in one place, sold by people who actually know their merchandise.
google avatar

Joseph F.

Yelp
The store itself is wonderful, and there is such a vast selection of quality and stylish clothing (even great a clearance section!!). I visited the store twice on my visit to Charleston, and the older sales representatives walking around were always so welcoming and polite. However, the two cashiers were incredibly pretentious, rude, and condescending on both visits. If the other workers were like the cashiers, I would have left the store without making any purchases.
google avatar

Rachael R.

Yelp
My dad and my fiancé both got custom suits here. They (my dad and fiancé) of course waited until a month before our wedding to come here and Price and the other guys working made sure it all came out perfect. We couldn't be happier with our experience!
google avatar

Mark R.

Yelp
How do you guarantee a customer won't return a shirt? Ask him if he wants to wear it out and don't include the tags?! Seems like a plan. I feel so used. Could have been an honest mistake I s'pose but seemed like an effort to retain a Commission. It was the most expensive shirt I was trying on. Definitely feel like I just want to curl up in the shower.
google avatar

Jessica M.

Yelp
The staff here helped me outfit my Yankee boyfriend while visiting! My boyfriend needed a sport coat for a dinner, and this store has an amazing selection. The gentleman assisting us, whose name was Tommy, was SO patient, friendly, and fun! He answered all of my questions and explained the versatility of a sport coat. He found the perfect-fitting one with just one look at my boyfriend. He also showed us some shirt combinations that I never would have thought could look so good. With such a selection, and my unfamiliarity with menswear, we needed someone who would ask questions to get an idea of what we were looking for, and then pull the best options to show us. He did exactly that, and we only had to pick between two or three. He is the kind of expert I wish I came across every time I shopped. If I lived in Charleston, I would hire him as a personal shopper! Another gentleman at the counter, whose name I do not know, was also very hospitable. Both he and Tommy made this such a pleasant experience. Now my boyfriend is going to be the best-dressed guy everywhere we go, and we will return here to do more shopping on our next trip!
google avatar

Chris D.

Yelp
When we relocated here a few years ago we found this store; I've since switched from Polo to Dumas and Southern Tide brands. We have a "regular" guy I see and shop from each time but this past weekend we were supported by Abigail and except for her placing an extra pair of shorts in my bag by mistake, I was very pleased! It's SUPER easy to drop $500 there on just a few items.

Yelp
Best Men's Store in Charleston (Voted almost every year by Charleston Magazine) I have been a regular customer for over 2 years now and normally deal with Scott. I purchased my Barbour Coat there and received a $50.00 gift card in the mail on my birthday as a thank you along with a hand written letter. Whether you are a millionaire or a young professional browsing the sale rack you will always experience a great amount of customer service. I stop in whenever I am walking down King Street to check out their sales and it is the first place I go to when I am in need of a quality gift. Their selection of premium denim for men is well above any selection you will find in Charleston, or even the state of South Carolina. They have the latest Barbour Jackets in stock every fall and always provide sizing help when needed (cut and length). I will always be a customer at this store and can't say enough about the kind staff. Thanks Guys! -Bryan
google avatar

Margaret S.

Yelp
Awesome customer service.... Clark and Victoria helped my son today and texted me to make sure I approved of what they picked out! Wonderful men's clothing store! Thank you guys for all the help. You went above and beyond for us today ! Highly recommend shopping at Dumas ... a Charleston classic.
google avatar

Reta H.

Yelp
I have shopped in this store on four occasions in the last eighteen months. Each time that I requested assistance I have had a reluctant salesman assist me even though the store had never been busy. Last month I tried shopping here and it will be the last time. I requested a standard men's item (a black turtleneck) and the salesman literally laughed at me and told me that "We don't have those because nobody wears them any more." I proceeded to several other men's stores on King Street and easily found what I needed. They're merchandise can be found elsewhere without the attitude.
google avatar

Roger S.

Yelp
Bought a great sports coat, 2 shirts, & jeans here. Did not encounter any pretentious sales staff others have mentioned. Actually the person waiting on me was very pleasant, courteous, and helpful. Maybe I'm more pretentious than they were & therefore didn't notice :)

Tom D.

Yelp
Ungentlemanly and inappropriate service. The man at the register asked me if I was shipping my dog home when I flew back because of the recent incident of a dog dying on an airplane. How appropriate. Thanks guys. I'll remember that the next time I spend $200 on a shirt at your store.
google avatar

Yvonne O.

Yelp
While this place is certainly pricey, and there are some pretentious salespeople (two older men were lamenting how cheap people were that weekend), I LOVED my experience here. The mens clothing takes up the majority of the place, but you can get wonderful finds from Psycho Bunny and Vineyard Vines and boxers from Royal Hyney (they are made from high thread count sheets and feel like they would be amazingly comfortable). The women's section is small, but I snagged a new Vineyard Vines Bag, tee and got my husband a tie for under $300, which may sound pricey, but is a steal for these brands.

Robert L.

Yelp
After purchasing $900 worth of stuff, my girlfriend attempted to return a Vineyard Vines sweater two weeks later and was told by the original salesman that all she could get was a store credit of 60% of the sale price - this despite having the receipt, and no signs of the alleged "40% off" sale price. After considerable snooty obstructionism, she put him on the phone with me, and I had to argue with him to get a simple refund any Walmart would have effected in minutes. Lesson #1 in How NOT To Treat Customers! Absolutely astonishing and disappointing.

D C.

Yelp
Dumas has a wide selection of high quality products. I've shopped here through my college years and still frequent Dumas for my professional wardrobe whenever I'm in town. Service here is unmatched. The employees truly take care of you. If I ever need a new pair of Gardeurs, they find the right new pair and mail them to me two states away. Shout out to Clark, great job. -DC

Will S.

Yelp
I've been shopping at Dumas for over 10 years and have always been happy with my experience. My first "fashion emergency" was last week where I needed a last minute tuxedo shirt, tailored, and shipped to an out-of-state wedding in 5 days. Clark helped me find the right shirt, had it tailored, kept me abreast of the status of the shirt, and over-nighted the garment to me in time for my event. Superb customer service - thank you Clark and Dumas!
google avatar

Layla C.

Yelp
Not only do they have a fantastic selection of men's clothes, they have the NICEST and most HELPFUL staff you will come across in Charleston. I shop here with my boyfriend and father every time we are in town, and they always remember us and make us feel very important. If I could give 10 stars, I would.

Texie A.

Yelp
I have always received exemplary service from Dumas, thanks to Clark! I had to get a gift for my boyfriend's step-father's cousin Greg, and Clark walked me through some great options for extended, extended family. Greg was so thrilled with his gift, he sent Clark some of this homemade Moonshine! Unfortunately my boyfriend and I broke up, but I still keep in touch with Greg. Is Clark single? Anyways, thanks for the help Clark!

SF R.

Yelp
Oh cmon... Dumas is a great place - all the sales people are really cool, the clothes are solid. I come here every time I'm in Charleston! Big Fan!!

Roger J.

Yelp
The service I received at Dumas M & Sons was very poor. I purchased a pair of shoes that needed to be ordered. The initial salesperson i encountered was fitting a mannequin and ignored me. The second person took my order, I paid for the shoes with the understanding they would be shipped to my home. After three weeks of no delivery I called the store and was placed on hold with no-one answering. I hung up and called again and the clerk stated the shoes had not been ordered and would call me with an update. Another week passed and I heard nothing. Finally after a month, with payment being made, I called again. To my dismay, I learned the shoes still had not been ordered. They told me they were now ordered. Still not received - so the saga continues. I would not recommend this store.

Yelp
Dumas is a must for any Yankee passing through Charleston. The inventory is well-curated and the sales staff is doting. I am on a first name basis with Linwood because I basically go there about once a month on my frequent trips to Charleston. Any complaints about customer service are misplaced. They will do alterations fast and accurately, but on one occasion they screwed up. They immediately rectified the problem--poorly tailored cuffs on trousers--and gave me a no-expiration card for $25 merchandise credit for purchases over $100, which is basically everything in the store. It definitely caters to the Lowcountry Mink and Manure Crowd, with lots of Barbour, Bills Khaki's, Vineyard Vines and similar brands. However, the fabric and construction of their house brand (with the distinctive rarely seen up North Quarter Moon and Palmetto logo on the breast) is exceptional and they are a fraction of what you would pay at Barneys or Bergdorf in New York or Boyd's in Philly. There are deals to be had if you make frequent visits and hit the place at sale time. End of season bargains are a real value because the styles that are offered are timeless. I have picked up poplin and linen suits for summer wear up north at a fraction of the cost of Brooks Brothers, with the same quality of fabric and construction. Worthy of a dedicated shopping and foodie pilgrimage from up North, with plenty of great restaurants nearby on King Street.

William W.

Yelp
Employees are very friendly and attentive. They even went into the window to get a pair of pants for me to try on off of a mannequin. They also carry all the best brands including Southern Tide, Vineyard Vines, Bill's Khakis, Southern Proper, and Smathers and Branson. They also have good prices, with a good polo shirt costing only about $75

wim p.

Yelp
I have shopped at M Dumas & Sons since the late 70's and have always loved the sales staff and the quality of cloths they have in the store. Perfect fit for Charleston, all class, very helpul and friendly.

Andrew J.

Yelp
The salesmen were great. I, however, had one problem. There was a man behind the counter who appeared to be an owner was very rude. He was little help and kept pushing certain brands and was of little help. He seemed to be impressed with his specially made m Dumas southern tide shirts. The prices were nothing special. Most of the brands, even the specials, were still retail. There selection of ties was unorganized and lacked ties of variation from the brands they said they carried. I would not recommend this store because of the management.

Will W.

Yelp
I was in town for a few days and decided to purchase some local clothing while I had the chance. I walked in Dumas and Sons excited about helping the local community. I asked the little man behind the counter, with the medium blue polo on while in dire need of an XL, if there were any clothing lines made locally. He had no interest in anything I asked and was a total smart ass. A few other younger guys answered my question, but I could tell he wasn't interested in helping me in any way. I guess I did not look the part of the average shopper, so he was probably thinking I was just looking. I left without making a purchase and took my business down the street. Lose the attitude, you are not as great as you think. I should have given you a good attitude adjustment myself, but I guess I did the right thing by just leaving.

John S.

Yelp
Best store ever. My friend from college is from Charleston and showed me this place when we were 18. Well I'm 22, live in Jacksonville (200 miles away), and I still do 100% of my shopping here to this day. I have been at least 12 times and have never walked out with a bad experience, the guys around my age are very knowledgeable on the latest trends and the older guys are very friendly and personable. Complaining about the prices is a joke, if you want to dress nice and have the money for it this place is very reasonable. They don't charge more than anyone else and like most great local places if you come in enough they remember you. I have probably suggested 6-10 friends here that have the same experience. I'm using my friends account to review this, but this place is amazing. -Casey
