Around the World in 14 Unique and Historic Ice-Cream Shops

"There aren’t many shops as old as MacAlpine’s that still stand in the desert city of Phoenix, Arizona. The diner’s selection of classics includes malts, phosphates, egg creams, and more. With an array of syrups, diners can also choose from a menu of more than 99 soda flavors at the vintage soda fountain. Anything from pickle to bubblegum to red velvet is fair game. The destination opened as Birch’s 7th Street Pharmacy in the late 1920s, changing hands from various owners until it landed on Fred MacAlpine in 1938. MacAlpine’s operated as a full-service pharmacy and soda fountain until 1991. While the drugs have been replaced by a food menu, the soda fountain, counter, and malt machine are original. The current owner even left a piece of history stuck beneath the counter: Bubblegum covers the underside, offering a sticky relic of the greasers and pink ladies who once shared malted milkshakes and egg creams at the same counter. Today, waitresses offer meals to diners in wooden booths, guests select old tunes from a jukebox, and shoppers peruse vintage decor and a hodgepodge of antiques in the attached space next door. If it all sounds a bit overwhelming, just start tasting sodas with reckless abandon. You’ll be jitterbugging with the best of ’em in no time. Update as of June 2021: The restaurant is closed indefinitely." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Excellent experience! Food and service was on point- delicious, cooked to order, very tasty. Love, Love, love the vintage look and feel of the restaurant. Shakes were great and desserts deserved the awards! As an antique and vintage enthusiast, bonus points for the thrift shop attached to the restaurant. Absolutely will be back!

Google
I loved MacAlpines! It's so cute (and small) inside. I ate the egg salad sandwich with bacon which was delicious. I would get it again. The fries were also delicious. Before dinner I got the pistachio ice cream sundae with fudge. It was so good and presentation was a 10 out of 10. I had ice cream first. Don't eat too much for lunch and forget the ice cream. If you must, eat dessert first. It's worth it. Don't forget to wander the antique store area. Great place for a date. They have a ton of ice cream sodas.

Google
Top 5 Best Reuben I've ever had!! My son had the burger which was also very good. The fries were crispy and perfect!! If you want a whole pie order ahead the rhubarb was AMAZING 🤩. Best cherry coke I've ever had, and all the shakes were delicious. We had a tiramisu shake, cherry malt, and a root beer float. Zero complaints, so glad they're open again!

Google
This is the most adorable old fashioned soda fountain and diner. I’m so glad I found it. Their ice cream soda menu is extensive and creative. Their pie is delicious. The entire place is floor to ceiling in antiques and there is an attached antique store next to the dining room. The gentleman servicing us looked dapper in their bow ties and (presumably) the owner was very kind and welcoming. MIL and I enjoyed the Nutty Professor and I Dream of Jeannie ice cream sodas as well as a slice of cherry and a slice of apple pie. Everything tasted great and I highly recommend stopping in for lunch or dinner or just a delightful ice cream soda.

Google
I had a really great first time here. I came for a milkshake to have a little cool experience in the Phoenix summer. My club sandwich and fries were great and so was the Cookie Jar milkshake. If I lived closer I would be here all the time. Parking is on the side and behind the building. There are also some antiques for sale in the attached store. I want to try the pie next time!

Google
It is a piece of living history. Unlike a 5 & Diner that pretends it from the 50s, this place is history that you can taste, touch, smell and interact with. You want grease in a bag, or over priced iced coffee you will find those a mile down the road. This isn't some mega corp owned franchise, this is a family ran business. Means you know who your hard earned dollar is helping, a family and not some stock holder. You will find a history lesson your children actually will enjoy. A setting where memories are made, and for some memories get rediscovered. My recommendation? Cheeseburger, fries, with a root beer float to chase away the Arizona heat.

Google
This is a lightning in a bottle dining experience that is an absolute must for anyone interested in Roadside Americana. Good grub, in a period perfect setting served by warm, friendly staff (often in great retro costumes). Possibly the best date destination possible. There are 99+ ice cream soda combos available. Tiger Blood, Red Velvet Cake, Popeye (kiwi-lime)! If you can dream it, you can probably taste it here. But wait, There's More! There's a vintage shop attached to the restaurant! We found a couple of items that perfectly fit into our kitschy decor at home. And there's a magical (users experience may differ) carriage right outside! WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT?,? If you are lucky enough to be within driving distance of MacAlpine's, hop in the car for a once in a lifetime experience.

Monica

Google
First time ever visiting today and we absolutely loved it! We ordered a cheeseburger, pastrami on rye & egg salad sandwich as well as root beer floats. Root beer floats were dynamite...old fashioned, extra soda brought for each one, delicious! All the sandwiches were a hit as well; have to say I haven't had that good of an egg salad sandwich (on a croissant) in a very long time. The vibe was perfect. Relaxed and kind of felt like I was waiting for an old friend to show up type of place. Definitely worth checking out!!

Yelp
MacAlpine's has been reopening with a limited menu and on a limited schedule - keep up with their social media so you know the dates and details. It was open both Saturday and Sunday last weekend and both Saturday and Sunday this weekend. The atmosphere is just as pleasant as I remember it to be from years ago, with old tunes playing - the retro vibes are still strong! Love that the wait staff is wearing vintage outfits. Their fries are always excellent. My egg salad croissant was just ok, I would probably get something different the next time. The story of the business, and the hurdles it's been facing to reopen, are quite compelling and if you read their story in GoFundMe you will likely want to bring them some business. I hope they reopen fully, I always love dining there.

Yelp
Great old time diner and soda fountain. Try the chicken salad and Bozos Favorite or the Velvet Elvis! Shop for antiques too.

Yelp
Adorable nostalgic little place! Great service and great food. A definite little gem in phoenix.

Eric B.

Yelp
I took my wife here this weekend. They were busy but our server was still sweet and wonderful. The food was good, the dessert and old fashioned soda fountain is clearly why people come. It was the best cherry coke I've had since leaving Chicago 20 years ago. Awesome Club Sandwich. I ate the whole thing. I never eat the whole thing. Thank you for being a fun place to eat in a town full of boring food.

Isabelle S.

Yelp
Honestly a waste of time. Food was horrible and service was worse. No wonder they are shutting down.

Dee R.

Yelp
I met a former colleague for lunch at MacAlpine's Diner and Soda Fountain, East side of 7th Street, south of McDowell, Phoenix. MacAlpine's opened in 1938. Hardship during the recent pandemic caused the closing for 3 years. Now Open Thursday thru Sunday 1130 - 3:00. The Food was fresh and excellent and the pies....oh the pies! The gorgeous Piemaker learned how to make pies from an Amish pie maker....the pies were so amazing (apple crumble and pecan), I forgot to take pictures. MacAlpine's Pie-Palooza is in process where you can order a whole pie for pick-up to add to their funds to keep the restaurant open. Vintage vibe still happening and you can take a walk down memory lane and purchase a treasure from their collection in the room next to the dining area.

Yelp
It was a soft open and fundraiser. Love the ice cream sodas. So quaint with all the knickknacks. They had a limited menu. Can't wait to come back here when they have a full menu.

Yelp
This is my new favorite place!! They have been around for years, then closed during Covid, and are now reopening Thursday-Sunday to start. Hopefully soon will be open all week. I have just discovered it. Truly a fun atmosphere! I feel like I'm back in the '50's. The food I've had is delicious. My favorites are the chicken salad on a croissant, egg salad with bacon, turkey club croissant with either French fries or the Hawaiian coleslaw. My sons are crazy for the cheeseburgers. I hear they have won awards for their fries. They are not your average fries. They are crispy and covered in herbs. Omg! Don't get me started on the pies. They have won numerous awards for those as well. They are hands down the best pies I have ever eaten. The pie crust is homemade and so delicious and the cherry pie is made from fresh cherries. The best! There is a "naughty pecan" pie which is pecan pie with a layer of the best salted caramel on the top. The caramel is like the caramels you would get in a specialty chocolate shop. They have a retro ice cream soda bar and serve incredible ice cream sundaes and shakes, etc. They look unbelievable and are huge. It's just fun to see the staff running around with giant ice cream creations.

Aleya P.

Yelp
My dad sent me the article that they reopened and we went immediately! I recommend getting there right when they open as there is limited seating and everything was taken up. We had their cheeseburger and they were cooked to perfection and very tasty. We then ordered the cotton candy ice cream float, known as the Bozo, and it was delicious. Every time you look around, you find a new interesting piece. Will definitely be coming back!

Alexandra V.

Yelp
such a cute little diner! with an adorable shop inside as well. the staff were nice and attentive and i enjoyed it!

Gillian C.

Yelp
First ever experience and was really disappointed. The one employee behind the counter seemed to be the only one who knew what they were doing. Everyone else was running around with their heads cut off. One of the managers was loud and my husband heard her call the one employee doing her job the C word. My kids were also eating with us. Small enough place were it shouldn't be so chaotic.
google avatar

Joan P.

Yelp
We love it here, too. So sorry to read about the hard times you are experiencing. I'm so glad you started a GoFundMe! You've got many loyal customers that want you back!!! I donated! https://gofund.me/46803783

Pat M.

Yelp
Great burger - fries - pie - atmosphere. So happy they have reopened. Hope they are able to get customers back in so that it remains open.
google avatar

Yelp
My kids and I absolutely love this place! Hopefully they will open again sometime soon. My kids say: "As soon as they open we're going and getting Bears On the Beach! - Please come back guys! we all miss you. :)

Susan M.

Yelp
So glad MacAlpines is up and running on Friday-Sunday for now! It's a true Gem and great food and old Fashion sodas. I had the best Meatloaf sandwich and potato salad! The wait staff was awesome! Don't forget to try their homemade pies! Cherry crumble is to die for!
google avatar

Keegan P.

Yelp
I haven't actually been here because they've been closed since Covid hit I believe.. Patiently waiting for the reopening and I just know I'm gonna love it. These historic places are becoming fewer and fewer every year and what we have left must be protected at all costs. See y'all soon!

K. D.

Yelp
Pie day will never be the Same!!!!The cherry pie is AMAZING. We are so happy to help out in hopes it will soon be open again. Order your fundraising pie now and help them out!! The Pecan looks incredible too! Help a local gem out.

Tatam K.

Yelp
Best restaurant ever! Such a fun atmosphere and their ice cream is so unique and delicious. My mouth waters thinking about the Naughty Pecan pie and cherry pie!
google avatar

Mitchell L.

Yelp
All these years in the area, and first time here. A shame really! We enjoyed a simple lunch and sundae this Sunday. Both had the Mac club sandwich. Mine with the Hawaiian cole slaw which was absolutely delicious. Club had cheese, ham, turkey and crisp bacon on toasted bread of your choice. I had forgotten how good a traditional club sandwich is. Only ate half, to save room for the sundaes which did not disappoint. Mine was pistachio ice cream, hot fudge, with whipped cream and almonds. Good old Thrifty brand ice cream is not gourmet but tastes great. Tiny little old original diner chairs not made for an old gorilla like me, but suited wife. All the waitresses were very nice, great attitudes for a beautiful Sunday afternoon, and made our visit very pleasant. This place is a must go for all in the area.
google avatar

Jim G.

Yelp
Best soda fountain experience in Phoenix They have a 40's and 50's style counter and dozens of cool ice cream soda selection featuring Thrifty I e Cream. The food is really good too. The is also an interesting bric-a-brac section.
google avatar

Natasha B.

Yelp
Missing this place so much. It was a rare vintage experience that I adored with my children. Even had my own 18th birthday here. It's history is so important as the oldest soda fountain shop in the state from the 1920s! hope it opens back up soon. When it does I'll be right there!
google avatar

Kris L.

Yelp
Love the 50's meets antique store vib of MacAlpine's, even the staff are dressed to theme. The store/restaurant is packed full of great antique items providing eye candy while you wait for your food, then the gorgeous soda drinks arrive for stage 2 eye candy! I had a very berry soda, boysenberry soda with strawberry ice cream, crazy good. They bring out a small pitcher of extra soda to add as you drink down what is in your glass. To counteract the sugar I had a house made black bean burger that was really good, large portion and came with a ripe tomato, lettuce, onions and cheese. I went without the bun to keep it gluten-free and it was still plenty of food. For my side I tried the carrot and raisin salad which had just a touch of sweetness and possibly some cinnamon. I would definitely get both of those again. The shop is so cute, I plan to come back to check out the antiques.
google avatar

Caroline I.

Yelp
It has been a few years since my husband and I have stopped in for lunch at MacAlpine's. As always it's a good experience with a friendly waitress and an inviting atmosphere. My husband decided he wanted to have an ice cream soda. He chose the Gentleman Prefer Blondes (praline n'cream with butterscotch soda). I had ice tea with lemon and sugar. I ordered the egg salad sandwich with salad and my husband ordered the meatloaf sandwich with potato salad. Every bite was delicious and filling. We enjoyed our meal and recommend anyone seeking a quality meal and its delightful ice cream drinks to search no further as this is the place to come.

Yelp
Had been wanting to try this old fashioned icon in Phoenix and finally made the 30 minute drive. They do have alot of antiques (aka junk) and some could probably be cleaned out. For ice cream I had the delicious Chocolate Malt. They use thrifty ice cream, but also give you the extra shake in the silver cannister. We sat at a table, but the counter looked iconic. Finally, the food wasn't food either averaging about 11 bucks per dish. Skip the Hawaiian Cole slaw, but the Sloppy Joe was good. They use Foster Farms turkey, but the club sandwich still got good reviews. Old school jukebox on tables also a good touch.

Marge G.

Yelp
A fun place for nostalgia, burgers and your favorite flavor of a phosphate, and the table jukebox. We bring our boomer visitors here. Take a walk down memory lane by shopping at their antique shop afterwards.
google avatar

Stephanie F.

Yelp
This place is cute and unique. There's a lot going on and it opens up into other shops with boutique and antique items. I was only here for the ice cream...and food. The open-faced turkey sandwich was legit. The Danbury sandwich was ok. The potato salad is the real deal and I'm picky about potato salads, but this stuff was bomb dot com! There are tons of different shake flavors to choose from, so good luck with that decision. You can also get sundaes and other ice cream concoctions, freezes, Malts, and old-fashioned sodas. Too many to name, but I'll guarantee they'll be at least 7 you'll have to choose from once you get the list narrowed down!!
google avatar

Steven E.

Yelp
The real thing- a soda fountain with a full menu and a store loaded with bric-a-brac. This is a throw back and worth a visit and perhaps for locals a reward for coming to downtown Phoenix
google avatar

Chris S.

Yelp
Great atmosphere! Retro atmosphere! Friendly service! Great food! Many retro food items and specials! * check the antique shop after you eat!
google avatar

Becky G.

Yelp
We love this place!! Awesome rhubarb pie!!! Great Reuben sandwiches!! Service is always friendly and great!
google avatar

Angie S.

Yelp
Yelp says hours updated 1 month Ago and open u til 7pm. Unfortunately that is not true. They are only open to browse antiques by appointment only. Very disappointing when you drive out of your way to check it out.
google avatar

Jane B.

Yelp
Amazing selection of delicious old-fashioned ice cream sodas. Hard to find these on the menu anymore, and theirs was quite possibly the best I've ever had! Had lunch also...nothing spectacular but still good! Enjoyed the carrot and raisin salad.
google avatar

Tiffany E.

Yelp
I want to start this off with saying how amazing this shop is, with it's atmosphere and the great finds around every corner! Besides the great antiques, the diner aspect of the business was a disappointment. I placed my order with an open mind. Even with the microwave constantly going off, I was still staying positive. To my disappointment, the meal I received was the Open Faced Roast Beef was incredibly depressing for $12.59. Instant gravy splattered my plate, mushy bread in the very first bite. Not to mention the rubbery texture of the very obviously overly microwaved roast beef. All and all my experience was an unexpected let down. I still recommend coming in to look at their amazing antiques, even try their deserts and many soda flavors!
google avatar

Brad H.

Yelp
We went here with a group of 19 and they are just not setup for that size group. Their biggest table can sit 12. So we ordered the 10lb bowl of ice cream. It was good and fun to share something so large. Primarily, it was just for the novelty. The ice cream was good, but I was not a big fan of so many types in one bowl. You end up getting flavors mixed together that are not that good when combined. The service was just ok. I'm sure that had something to do with the size of the party. It's worth a trip because it is a very unique place.
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
What's better then a banana split? Having a banana split at an antique store! The service was great the whole crew is super friendly and makes you feel right at home. The whole store has so much to offer so if you go in for ice cream you'll more then likely leave with a new purchase as well!
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
Talk about a throwback Thursday, flashback Friday, blast from the past or whatever you call it. Gun it to 88 and go back in time to this classic American soda shop. Tons of old memorabilia adorns the wall along with a variety of antiques and odds and ends for sale that you see on an episode of American Pickers. Came in after a Saturday event downtown for some ice cream. They have a wide variety of flavors to choose from and milkshakes and malts too. Your classic diner style food from cold sandwiches to hamburgers, pb&j, and pies as well. Awesome little place so come on in if you're in the area for a quick bite to eat and a good old fashioned milkshake.
google avatar

Samantha B.

Yelp
Didn't try the food but it's hard to mess up a burger and hotdog so I'm assuming those are good. Place has been open since the 20's and had a very interesting story behind it listed on the menu. Onto the stuff you care about. The ice cream soda I had was great, the one my date had was better. The ice creams are high quality and the soda flavors are quite honestly endless. You would have to go every day for more than 2 months to try every flavor. The staff was friendly, music was great but not too loud. Cool atmosphere. Liked it, will be back to try more.
google avatar

Grace D.

Yelp
If I could give this place six stars, I would. Perfect ambiance from the minute you walk in the door. The staff here are incredibly sweet and helpful and GENUINE. It's like being in a movie. There's classic music playing in the background at just the right volume and the decor is unique and fun. It's great for all ages, which isn't always true for antique places. Prepare to reward children (and yourself) with ice cream. But just being here is a treat. I enjoyed walking around and browsing through old records and fun vintage clothes. They'll let you play their antique pianos, too! If a guy took me on a first date here, I would immediately consider marriage. I had the pulled pork sandwich and a cherry coconut malted with peanut butter (don't judge). Our table's food came within 10 minutes of ordering and it was delicious. My bun was freshly toasted and the coleslaw was crispy, not goopy, and classic. If you appreciate good old-fashioned American food, this place is for you. They also have a surprising amount of vegetarian options- and not just salads!
google avatar

Nancy S.

Yelp
The soda fountain and the antiques initially drew me to visit. I was pleasantly surprised by their food too. I ordered the Mac Clubhouse Sandwich and it was yummy! Included an I Dream of Jennie dreamsicle float which was just that dreamy and delicious. Next time I'll be trying the Pineapple Upside-Down Cake. I initially thought it would be dusty from the antiques but it was not. I was impressed at how clean it was. Friendly reminder this is a 30's nostalgic restaurant and shop, so don't expect new anything, including the tables and chairs. The white tables and chairs are a bit flimsy so sit in a booth if you need more stability. Don't pass up the friendly staff and spend some time looking at the clothes, it's like a treasure chest in there! You have tons of modern choices, give this a shot, you'll be glad you did.
google avatar

Beatrice B.

Yelp
This cute 60's style diner has the best Naughty Pecan Pie. It is my absolute favorite pie! You will not want to miss out on this along with a lunch and fountain drink from their large list of fountain favorites! The juke box and vibe will make you feel like you stepped back in time.
google avatar

Kenzie H.

Yelp
Loved the service, food and shakes! Carmen our waiter was amazing and had great recommendations for first timers! The antique store was so fun to look before we sat down before a meal!
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Saw this place on MSN on a list of top classic diners in the state so decided to give it a try. It was not at all what I expected! It was like a weird antiques shop with a small diner attached. I had a pastrami sandwich and split a sundae. Both we're good but not remarkable. The soda/float options were overwhelming to the point that we just decided to skip that rather than make a choice. The vibe of the diner was so unique that THAT was the stand out thing. The service was really good too. But don't go there thinking it'll be like going to one of those typical 50's style diners, because it definitely is not
google avatar

Daniel K.

Yelp
A really cool place, fun to browse around all the vintage items and clothes. I'd say it's more of a novelty than great food, but a fun place to take friends or family who are into the 60's
google avatar

Tru P.

Yelp
OMG...99 flavors of soda!! Try one, try em all!! Even Pickle. This was a great spot ... who knew a phosphate was so good!!! I'm in Pheonix often and this won't be my last stop in.
google avatar

Gee L.

Yelp
If you are reading this, my only question is "WHY HAVEN'T YOU BEEN HERE YET?". This is Phoenix, what made it great. And yeah, the city kinda grew around it and not in the best way at times, but where else can you get a REAL fountain soda, a shake made with one of those old machines our parents sat in front of when they were dating...PLUS get a super great sandwich. Then wander around and buy a red leather jacket possibly worn by Michael Jackson in his Thriller video. Or get a sequined vest...everyone needs one. Walking down the street may get risky but this pace is not. And the staff and owner are there and they ROCK.
google avatar

Amber D.

Yelp
Had a very nice time. Turtle Sunday, chocolate shake, almond joy Sunday all very good. Fun to look around at all the cool antiques.
google avatar

Annette S.

Yelp
Place is so cool it is like walking back into time with all of the retro stuff in the restaurant. My family and I came in for sundaes they were delicious and the service was amazing. Next time we come back to arizona we will be back. Thank you p.s. the chicken sandwich and potato salad is so good.
google avatar

Susan S.

Yelp
MacAlpines Diner was a surprise to me. We went with cousins to which they knew how much I loved antique items as I managed a thrift store for 3 years.... They did tell me it was a diner with antiques which you could purchase from... I just didn't realize how big it was and how amazing the prices were.... The restaurant was an old fashioned soda pop type of restaurant... everything there was like it would have been back in the 50's... for lunch I had the Reuben & my cousin had the Malibu Chicken Sandwich and others had pulled-pork sandwich (not pictured) & grilled cheese & tomato sandwich (not pictured).... plus dessert.... OMG!!!!! We were extremely full Then they had antiques everywhere to which could be purchased.... If you want something unique, check this place out as I think it's a must... definitely will be going back and bringing friends with me.
google avatar

Tricia F.

Yelp
I had an uncontrollable urge for an old fashioned soda so Yelped "soda fountain drinks" in the area. MacAlpine's popped up with some good reviews. From the outside we would never have walked inside! This antediluvian restaurant/coffee shoppe is really pushing the limit on dirty vs nostalgic. The wait staff were dressed in mismatched outfits, grungy socks and shoes. The shelves in the restaurant itself are packed full of ageless classic memorabilia. It was fun to sit and let your eyes wonder over everything ~ almost overwhelming. We're talking "out of control packed"! Walking in we really did not know if we were in the right place because you don't walk directly into the restaurant. There are technically three rooms that cross in the center room which is the restaurant. Each of the side rooms are small and hold antiques, clothing, furniture pictures and misc. items. Our waitress was friendly and service was OK. I had an old fashion soda with lime syrup, vanilla ice cream and a shot of phosphate. It was refreshing. The hubster had a tuna melt and a root beer shake. There is plenty on the menu to please any palate.

Yelp
Super fun place to walk around in and have some yummy ice cream. My one complaint would be the servers. Both were kida rude and annoyed at the customers. Our orders were all wrong (we got 5 diff sundaes), and the ones the waitress recommended was so not tasty (could just be a taste preference thing though). Would DEF come back if the staff was changed. Maybe its the silly uniforms they have to wear, but those blonde girls were not happy NOR friendly...
