MacArthur Place Hotel & Spa

"Set on a historic 19th-century estate of lush gardens and century-old trees just a short walk to Sonoma's Plaza, MacArthur Place embodies the laid-back, relaxed feel of Sonoma. Each of the hotel's 64 rooms are individually designed and appointed with an elegant residential feel. Many of the rooms are suites offering fireplaces, porches, or balconies overlooking the gardens and original art from local Sonoma artists. The gardens are the real attraction on the six-acre estate, with a relaxing zen garden and a pool surrounded by stately magnolia trees. The Spa at MacArthur offers a variety of massages, facials, and body treatments all based on the herbs, flowers, and plants found in the gardens. Culinary offerings include Layla, with a Mediterranean-meets-Sonoma menu; the Bar at MacArthur; and The Porch coffee shop."

"Everything in Sonoma is absolutely gorgeous—you feel like you're in the South of France. I was reading about MacArthur Place, and I chose to stay here because the energy is so restorative. It almost feels like a home, in a sense, because you get your own house. It felt like the perfect getaway—I didn't see any of the other guests, I had my own patio, there's an outdoor shower."

This place is a hidden gem. The grounds are beautifully landscaped. Our morning yoga session by the pool was a perfect way to start our day. Its location puts you close enough to the town square that we walked every day. Layla's food and service is outstanding. The pool ambiance puts you right at ease. This is just what we all needed to get away and relax. Would recommend to anyone.

MacArthur Place is VERY SPECIAL, and it begins with the incredible staff who work there. THEY TRULY CARE! Fabiola, Michael, and Isabelle were tremendous in solving a wrinkle early on, while Francis, Riley, Larry, and Rolando stole our hearts with their earnest care and excellent customer service. Dahmien provided wonderful service on the outside terrace, while Justin (the GM) and Kevin (the Hotel Manager) made us feel welcome and very special the moment we met them. The culture of service and warmth at MacArthur Place is apparent from the top down. This hotel is very well run! It is also most beautiful! The gardens are lovely, and corn-hole on the green lawn is a vibe! We only left a few days ago, and I miss being there already! Hoping to return to this home-away-from-home in wine country, soon! Thank you for a fabulous time!

MacArthur Place has the charm and setting of a luxury retreat. The grounds are beautifully maintained, the rooms are clean and comfortable, and the pool area was a highlight of our stay. Valet, room service, and poolside staff were all friendly and attentive, which we really appreciated. However, several service and communication issues left us disappointed. Our room, which was supposed to be ready by noon, wasn’t available until 4:15 pm, a major inconvenience. While we were offered use of the spa area to freshen up for dinner, it didn’t fully make up for the disruption to our plans. On our first night, housekeeping unexpectedly walked into our room at 8:30 p.m. for turndown service, well after we were in bed, which felt intrusive and avoidable. At checkout, we weren’t provided a receipt and only discovered a large charge later. I had to follow up days after our stay to request an explanation. More troubling was that the American Express Platinum benefits were not honored, including preferred rates and breakfast savings. I provided documentation to the hotel, but received no response and ultimately had to go through Amex to get a refund. For a property of this caliber, this level of accounting oversight and lack of communication is simply unacceptable. While the physical property is impressive and parts of the service were excellent, these lapses in professionalism and accountability left a lasting impression. Unfortunately, we won’t be returning.

We had an amazing stay here! I can’t say enough great things about this hotel. We were there for a work conference but would return for vacation because it was so great! The rooms were clean, comfortable and updated! The ambiance of the resort was quaint but luxurious! The food was outstanding and the cocktails were delicious! The bar had a great vibe and amazing service. Hector, one of the managers made sure our group was well taken care of and went the extra mile to deliver an exceptional level of service! A big shout out to Alex and Charlene behind the bar who stayed late to make sure our group had a great time! We will be back!

We recently took advantage of a kid-free day and headed to MacArthur Place & Spa in Sonoma now that their refreshed pool is open for summer. The moment we arrived the relaxed, elegant vibe set the tone for a perfect mini escape. We lounged by the outdoor heated pool surrounded by chaise longues, umbrellas, Adirondack chairs and a bubbling whirlpool. It was pure bliss under the warm sun. The newly renovated spa looked tempting too, but our focus was unwinding with a good book and refreshing cocktails at poolside. Lunch at Layla, the Mediterranean inspired restaurant, hit the spot. We shared crisp hash brown topped salads, grilled salmon and dips made with herbs fresh from the chef’s garden. It all felt bright, light and just right. Pro tips for a perfect day trip: - Reserve a cabana or comfy chaise early as they go fast mid day - Enjoy morning yoga on the Burris Lawn which is complimentary for guests - Grab coffee and a maple bar pastry from The Porch before heading home for a delightful finish This grown up outing felt like a luxurious reset. No kids, no agenda, just sun, water, great food and total relaxation. We’ll definitely be back for another serene summer escape.

We came for a couples' massage and to enjoy the relaxation garden, complete with whirlpool and steam room. It did not disappoint! The facility was clean, comfortable, and peaceful. The massages were thoroughly enjoyed by me and my husband. And the robes! Have you ever felt like an angel baby? You will when you slip one of these robes on. We LOVED this experience so much!

Booked the Chef’s Cottage for my Bridal and night of wedding suite. Absolutely gorgeous hotel and was the perfect place for getting ready plus photos with my bridesmaids. We also had a brunch at the patio area that includes a fire place. The hotel definitely made me/us feel special during our wedding weekend! Only reason it’s 4 and not 5 stars is (1) because the at room food service was slow and they missed a couple of items (2) when I first got there, there were a couple of spiders in the room but the hotel quickly got them for me when I called (the property is surrounded by gorgeous trees so not surprising there were a couple of spiders).

The MacArthur Place was truly top notch from the minute I arrived to the minute I left. I was greeted and had the doors opened for me as I walked up to the building, the front desk was extremely helpful with check in and additional information about the property. The service was impeccable - they visited my room multiple times throughout the day to ensure everything was taken care of. Their text message customer service during my stay was great for quick answers to any questions I had and loved that I could order room service from my personal phone. The Layla restaurant had amazing amazing food (which I will definitely be dreaming about), their coffee shop had great coffee and tea! And the property was truly amazing... the photos online do not do it justice! If you stay during spring the grounds are covered in the sweetest roses which adds just the most romantic touch. ||||I cannot wait to come back here for a second time and highly recommend the MacArthur Place Hotel :)

Yelp
I wasn't able to stay at this hotel as I was staying at another hotel down the street and was here only for a spa day, but when I was walking around this hotel I did look around and it looked absolutely beautiful and so was the spa, although it was a bit small compared to other spas I've been to, including the waiting area in comparison to other spas I've been to including the spa I had visited at the hotel I stayed at during this trip as well. I have to say the massage and facial I got were both great but the massage was the best massage I'd ever gotten before and I get them pretty regularly so that says a lot would love to come back here again to enjoy the spa again and also to hopefully enjoy the entire hotel. Sadly, I didn't take any pictures.

Yelp
We stayed for two nights in May of 2023 in a Garden Shower Suite. Long story short: It's fine but I wouldn't pay full price. CONS: - Flickering lights in bathroom and living room - Super thin floors. Could hear sex, stomping, and water running from upstairs neighbor - Upstairs neighbors water affected our water. Whenever housekeeping was cleaning up there, our toilet kept running. - SO MANY BUGS IN OUR ROOM (WHY) - crane flies, ants, earwigs, mosquitos galore (I GOT BIT UP) - Mattress was terribly slumped and uncomfortable - Shower shampoo didn't work and was empty - In the mornings, there was a smokey burnt smell in our room. Still have no idea where it came from. - There was one single trash bin for our giant room and it was in the bathroom which was behind two doors, lol. Talk about inconvenient. - Gives off a Best Western kind of a vibe since you can hear all the happenings of your neighbor. Hopefully their new construction has made it so their rooms have better sound insulation. MEH: - They have complimentary valet parking but you need your car all the time in Sonoma so it's annoying to have to keep waiting on valet to get your car. I wish they had at least a few self parking options. - Stone cold room service - Questionable outdoor shower. I looked up and could see my neighbors window. Could they see me showering?? Lol. I'll never know. PROS: - Customer service was really good. Very friendly staff - Parking attendant Allax was cool. - Felt very private. Outside grounds were very quiet. - Lots of space - Front porch had seating - Back porch had lots of seating - Refillable water station right outside room

Yelp
4.5 STARS One thing I get hyped for at nice hotels is the bed and doing a bed test...Caleb style (the apartment guy). OFC, without outside clothes and shoes cause that's ick. MacArthur Place passed the bed check and I got the best 6 hour sleep each night that I've gotten in months so that's a win! Established in 1869 as a private estate, vineyard, and ranch, MacArthur Place transformed into a luxury hotel in the late 1990s. A multi-year renovation was completed last year, earning them a place in Travel + Leisure's Top 500 Hotels in the World. On a hunt for dog-friendly accommodations, MacArthur Place was the front runner in my top three choices to stay in wine country. At the time, they were offering 20% off (2 nights or more) which sealed the deal! G R O U N D S The six-acre, 69 room property is located on charming grounds filled with lush greenery, well-manicured lawns with sculptures, lounges areas with fire pits, and various gardens including a chef's garden that provides produce for their onsite restaurants. It's about a 10-minute walk to Sonoma Plaza/Square (or a 3 minute drive) with an array of restaurants and tasting rooms. A C C O M O D A T I O N S I booked the Garden Spa Suite and stayed in Myrtle #41, a modern farmhouse style cottage. - Clip of suite: https://tinyurl.com/33htccmd - Clip of patio: https://tinyurl.com/4msx6k5m (+) Spacious, nicely appointed room with living room/sitting area, king bed, large restroom with double vanity, and patio area with a soaking tub and additional shower. There was a water feature in the patio for calming sounds while taking a hot soak. (+) Bed was firm yet comfy, as were the pillows, soft sheets, and down comforter. (+) Heated bathroom floors. (+) In-room refillable bottled water with various water stations on the property. Complimentary snack basket: chips, jerky, and dried pineapple. (+) Turn-down service includes cooling eye masks for 'em puffy eyes. (+) High-end appliances; i.e. Stagg kettle and Dyson hairdryer. (+) 65 inch TV with access to DirecTV and Chromecast. (+) WiFi was pretty fast and not spotty. (+) Solid sound proofing. Each afternoon/evening, there was a wedding outside and we didn't hear a peep. (+) Since it's a cottage, there were no guests above so yay for no stomping! (+) No funky smells or stenches. I've stayed at some dog-friendly rooms/suites where you can smell cleaning products masking the odor. (-) There were calcium deposits on the shower head and hand hose so shower pressure wasn't strong. (-) There's a mini fridge stocked with soda, beer, and wine (for purchase) but no room to put your own drinks or leftover food. (-) While seated in the vanity chair, you can't access the vanity mirror that's attached to the wall. Not a ding but an observation. $$$$ priced hotels usually provide a personalized welcome note and welcome bottle of wine/bubbly (even if it's not a special occasion) but they don't here. D O G - F R I E N D L I N E S S Pet fee: $150 per stay. $50 extra per dog. Two dogs max. Very dog-friendly. My dog was offered a treat upon arrival (bubbly for the hoomans). There was a pet waste station right outside our cottage. They forgot to provide dog amenities: bed, food bowl, toys, and treats in the room. D I N I N G Complimentary hot and tea available in the mornings, no pastries or breakfast. - Layla: Farm-to-Table Cuisine - The Bar @ MacArthur - Full bar with small bites and burger/sandwiches - The Porch: Tea, coffee, and grab 'n go (yogurt, salad, sandwich) Only got iced tea from The Porch and didn't try any of their dining options. Their restaurants have dog-friendly outdoor seating. S P A / W E L L N E S S - Massages (start at $195) and facials (start at $185) available. - Complimentary yoga classes on weekends at 9 am. - Outdoor relaxation garden with whirlpool and a co-ed steam room complimentary for hotel guests. - Gym overlooks the pool and hot tub area. They're listed on ResortPass for day passes. S E R V I C E Top-notch hospitality with kind, welcoming staff at the front desk, concierge, and valets. They kindly accommodated my request for early check-in. When providing feedback during the contactless check-out process, I mentioned not receiving the dog amenities and they waived the pet fee. Unexpected and much appreciated. P A R K I N G Complimentary valet parking only (prompt retrieval). No self-parking. Bring cash for tip! E-bikes available for use. Overall, I really enjoyed my stay at MacArthur Place tho I'm not sure if it was worth $1,100 per night (after 20% off deal). While they bill themselves as a luxury hotel IMO, it's more upscale as it was missing some tiny luxe touches and attention to detail. BUT, the hospitality and customer service were top-notch so rounding up to 5 stars.

Yelp
What a relaxing weekend! This was our first time in Sonoma and we were celebrating a birthday and an engagement. The spa was wonderful, highly recommend the couples massage! Front desk gave complimentary glasses of champagne upon arrival which was a nice touch. The valet was always fast, bellman super knowledgeable and the property was beautiful. I wish we could spend a month there but we will definitely be back! Highly recommend.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of staying here at MacArthur Place for the weekend while attending a Ferrari event at the Sonoma Raceway, and it's a spectacular and gorgeous hotel. We were welcomed at check in with a glass of champagne. On the way to our room in 'The Carriage House', we enjoyed seeing many cool art pieces, fountains, flowers, trees, fire pits (that were on and so welcoming), the pretty pool, and more. Our room was charming, spacious, luxurious and had nice perks such as plush bathrobes, snacks, slippers, a porch, coffee, tea, aluminum water bottles, and more. I simply love this hotel!

Yelp
For over $3,000 for a three-night stay--only discounted because of the wedding block rate--I have to say it's not worth it. The amenities were lacking, several items in our room were broken, and there were noticeable issues with the construction. For a room that typically costs $1,200 to $1,400 per night, I expected a much higher standard.

Yelp
So, let me spill the tea on this company shindig we threw in one of those "coaches." Food? Honestly, a 10-year-old would throw a fit. The Chilean salmon was a major letdown - I'm a seafood importer, and I know my stuff. Premium salmon from Scotland, Norway, or even the Faroe Islands would've been the move. What did we get? Sad Chilean salmon with a side of fennel and some forgettable buttery barley or farro. Portions? Kid-sized. The salad was a snooze-fest - just romaine and radicchio. No cheese, no fruits, no life. Service was a horror show; not a single smile in sight. Now, the "package" included an open bar, shoutout to the cool Argentinian bartender. But, they rushed us to chug our wine and take it to the bar area - a big no-no apparently, even though it's the same hotel's wine. Go figure. We had to emergency-order charcuterie plates 'cause everyone was hangry. As a hotel, the miniature menu resembles running out of food for a party? Total nightmare. Step up your game, folks. Beautiful atmosphere, but the service and food experience or lack there of, made it ugly.

Yelp
If you are looking for peace this is the place. Everything was amazing. Dogs are welcome here and this made me happy. Suki had her own bed and food bowls. I didn't have to worry about her not being welcome. I even brought her with me for my foot massage, which was amazing. A peppermint foot massage by Kimberly is a must. She was super sweet and actually did wonders for my ankle that I had broke 3 months ago. My ankle was healed but still tight and swollen looking, all puffy. It's not all swollen anymore. The massage was exactly what I needed. The room was so nice and quiet. I got up in the middle of the night and discovered the bathroom floors were heated. We would for sure stay here again. The only disappointment was the restaurant wasn't open the night we were there.

Yelp
I had the Sanctuary of Flowers Massage at the Spa at MacArthur Place and it was fabulous. Absolutely exceeded expectations! From the moment I arrived the staff was attentive and welcoming. Rachel, my practictioner, was absolutely amazing! Two thumbs up! Highly recommend!

Yelp
We were blown away by MacArthur Place. The hospitality was incredible. The staff was very helpful and friendly, the design and detail was next level, and the spa was a dream. Everything was clean and well maintained, the hotel also provided everything you could possibly need. We loved having the e-bikes available to us during our stay. You couldn't ask for a better place to stay in Sonoma. I look forward to my next trip.

Sue K.

Yelp
I had experienced a situation at MacArthur Place that involved handicap parking and a parking valet, that went terribly wrong. The valet was unaware of California handicap parking laws and literally broke one. I wrote a fairly disappointed post about MacArthur Place. I want to give a shout out to Justin Wilson the property manager. He contacted me through Yelp and asked if we could please speak. We did and he could not have been more apologetic for the valet who was taking up the slack from a different position. He assured me that practice would be revised and apologized for anything about the event that had caused me anxiety. He also very generously offered to buy dinner for myself and a friend at their lovely restaurant Layla. I feel this negative event was taken very seriously by the MacArthur Place management and I want to thank Justin for handling the situation personally. I will continue enjoying MacArthur Place and all the wonderful pleasures it has to offer.

Yelp
We loved our stay overall at MacArthur Place. Greeted with only valet parking and an easy check-in. We were offered complimentary sparkling wine or sparkling water and also upgraded to a suite at check-in (part of Amex Fine Hotel & Resorts). This was our first time on the grounds so we were led to our room closer to the back called "Elm". We stayed on the second floor which I loved. Definite positives: - Our suite was absolutely beautiful. We had complimentary packaged snacks and more little treats of macarons, nuts, and dried fruit prepared for us on arrival. - One of the nicest bathrooms that I've stayed in with double shower heads and SO spacious! Love the modern design and lights. I just wanted to stay in the bathroom forever. - Concierge text line - so useful. They are able to make reservations for you at Layla anytime. Someone even brought us pillows at near midnight with just a text! -Valet is excellent with grabbing your car super quickly - it was always ready for us by the time we got to the front. Some areas of improvement: - It would be nicer if you had a shower control for each of the shower heads rather than just 1 control for both because you always have to turn on both shower heads even if just one person is showering. In this day and age where California water is so precious, it's unfortunate that you can't control each shower head individually! I am surprised. - We asked for firm pillows and wow, they were NOT firm at all!!! Pillows are way too squishy and soft for our asking. - Layla - the only restaurant here. Unfortunately the food was mediocre for the most part and simply not good enough to justify the price. See my separate review for Layla where I go into more detail but bottom line: Layla is probably the reason why we would not return to MacArthur Place which is unfortunate.

Yelp
Wow, where to even begin? We stayed here for my birthday weekend this year and had a wonderful time. Excellent grounds, amenities, and staff. This was a great choice for a birthday celebration - the staff were so gracious and gave us a complimentary bottle of Mumm, waters, snacks, and a handwritten birthday card at check-in. We checked in after two back-to-back wine tastings. Parched, barely able to see straight, and dangerously hangry, I was thankful for their quick and delicious room service. Espresso martinis and French fries were on the nightstand in under twenty minutes, all without needing to leave the bed or pausing Beetlejuice. The perfect birthday. Room service was bomb but the on-site dining options were fantastic as well. We had brunch at Layla and drinks from the bar and really enjoyed both. The hotel itself is gorgeous. Everything on the grounds was beautiful. Historical grounds, but everything is newly remodeled. Amenities galore - nice pool and hot tub, valet parking, and e-bikes to take to town square. The early October weather in Sonoma was perfect for long bike rides. Cozy offerings all around - comfy slippers and robes, plush pillows and duvet, and a Fellow kettle for tea. This place manages to somehow feel ultra luxurious, yet intimate and cozy all at the same time. I had a truly wonderful experience. It's now months later and I'm still dreaming about it. I can't wait to go back. Highly recommend!

Yelp
As much as it pains me to say it, our trip wasn't up to par this time around. Though I love this hotel - There were a lot of staff communication issues that poorly impacted our trip. We checked in Thursday - Sunday and were not told there would be a wedding ceremony right outside our front door, so we were stuck in our room for a good hour and a half. It was awkward! We were also over-charged for our room and are still working on getting a refund. We also notated we were returning to the hotel to celebrate our anniversary staying there the year before and there was no celebration/ card etc. like the year prior. Though these things really don't matter at the end of the day, it makes a big difference with the guest experience. Not sure why there was such a drastic difference in customer service from 2023 to 2024, but just wanted to provide the feedback!
google avatar

Mikaela B.

Yelp
From check in to check out, they made our anniversary stay so special. I only wish we had more time to enjoy it longer! We had breakfast in Layla, which was delicious and a massage in the spa, which was so relaxing. The room itself was beautiful. I would definitely return!

Yelp
A year ago, my husband and I visited MacArthur to scout as a potential wedding venue and fell in love with the crisp white buildings bordered by black accents. The landscaping around the property was truly beautiful. We had a really good impression just from entering the front lobby to meet our wedding representative for our appointment. Ultimately, the wedding lawn was not private/secluded enough from hotel guests for us to move forward with the venue, but I knew I wanted to come back and stay as a guest. And so we ended up booking our stay at MacArthur for our minimoon! I will say after having a rough hotel experience with our last wedding hotel we had come from, MacArthur definitely made up for it in terms of hospitality. The front desk attendant was super polite, and the complimentary valet was nice to have. The man showing us to our room made friendly talk and even the landscapers around the property are kind and greet you. Our room was one of the nicest rooms we ever stayed in and we were just amazed at all the little things they have to add onto your experience. We got s'mores for the firepit, there were macaroons and a sweet card in our room. There were slippers, and a fire log and we were delivered more towels and a eye mask. By far the most impeccable hospitality I have ever experienced. Also we booked a spa day the next day and they had these little custard cookies I just could not get enough of, they were so delicious! I am so glad I finally got to experience a stay here and we have truly enjoyed ourselves.

Yelp
If you're looking for a luxurious, peaceful, romantic getaway...look elsewhere. While the property and rooms are perfection, the staff (from check in, valet, restaurant, pool service) are pretty cold and overall seem miserable) then add constantly barking dogs in the rooms and screaming toddlers at the pool. Could have spent far less and stayed at a budget hotel. A shame because property is very pretty. Overall, great hotel for wealthy families and no one else.

Stephanie F.

Yelp
Hotel grounds and room were beautiful. Room service breakfast on Saturday was delicious and valet men were great. Unfortunately the main "weekend staff" needs a lesson in hospitality. We went to Layla for lunch on Sunday and were told that if we didn't have a reservation, they couldn't seat us; they were too busy. We were directed to the bar where we could order from the same menu. A lovely young woman took our order and then (we presume) went to lunch. The person who delivered our food, asked if we wanted salt and pepper. Although we said yes, we never got it, nor did anyone come by to check if our food was ok, one order was wrong or offer to refill our waters. I got up and got my own water. The bartender finally brought our bill, but didn't print the second page so I had to ask for the paper so we could charge it to our room. As we left the restaurant, I stopped by the front desk to ask if it was standard that you needed to make a reservation when eating on the property and if we'd need to plan our meal time for Monday. The woman at the front desk responded with, "We're very busy with the holiday. If you want to know the answer then you should walk back over to the hostess and ask her." My response, "Wow. Nevermind, we'll go elsewhere for breakfast tomorrow." And yes, her response was "Ok." We will be looking for an Auberge Resort next time we go to Sonoma. MacArthur Place you missed the mark.

Jaclyn Y.

Yelp
We had a pleasant stay here. Their texting service is really convenient, and the location is close to the town center. Rooms were clean and well-appointed. Loved the comfy slippers! Everyone at the front desk was very nice. The valet team is awesome and super friendly. Housekeeping was patient and attentive.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my stay here. The staff was more than accommodative and the rooms were perfect, all creating a fantastic weekend. One downside: the high school football field is almost adjacent to the MacArthur Place Hotel. While I expected that there might be noise if a team was playing, I was extremely surprised and disappointed by the loud music being blasted to empty stands from the school's PA system at 10am this morning (Saturday). From my conversations with staff, it seems like this is a recurring issue, as the managers of the high school field seem to be disconnected from the peace of the hotel and neighborhood. .

Hands down the best spot. The service is amazing. It's so gorgeous, I loved all the buildings and aesthetics. We stayed for an anniversary and we are getting married there next September! Cannot wait!

Yelp
Stayed at MacArthur last month as it was our second time in Napa. This place is absolutely beautiful! I am big on reviews and decided to try them. Everyone was so accommodating and polite. Our room was clean and super spacious with our balcony for morning coffee and fire pit at night. I can't say much about the Layla because I had gone wine tasting prior to arriving there and was not feeling all that well lol (-_-) my husband did really enjoy the food though. Michael, our server, was absolutely amazing. Hoping to return next summer for our wedding/vowel renewal as there grounds are so pretty and perfect for what we are searching for! Don't miss out, book your stay.

Yelp
This spa is my go to. I love how I feel im far away from home, but I'm not. I have never seen this place crowded. It feels exclusive. They usually have availability and it is not hard to get an appt. Their locker room is cute and clean. My massages are always quality. I have been coming here for years and will continue to do so.

Yelp
Beautiful, romantic, relaxing and right in the heart of wine country's best Sonoma. Walking distance to an adorable down town with coffee shops and great shopping. A must getaway for sure

Yelp
In a few words, Excellence in Hospitality!! From the welcoming stylish lobby, to the bar, to Layla restaurant, to the modern yet California Organic room decor, to the Spa (lavender scrub and massage treatments), to the steam room and private outdoor hot tub, to the fire pits and outdoor sculpture gardens, everything was spectacular!! Attention to every tiny detail has been paid by this organization. Top notch!! Thank you for a relaxing and delicious winter getaway.

Yelp
We had the pleasure of a two night stay in the Garden Spa Suite. The room was spacious and clean and customer service was excellent. We did have dinner at Layla, which was Not particularly good or bad, it was just ok. We also both enjoyed the spa. We had the hot stone massage and then spent time in the steam room.

Yelp
MacArthur Place is a beautiful hotel with a modern farmhouse vibe. The grounds are well-maintained with lots of little nooks and crannies to explore. So why the 3-star review? My primary gripe is that the room we stayed in - which was a king room with an outdoor patio and garden shower - was not what I'd expect for what we paid (about $1000/night). Most problematic, the plumbing was VERY loud, which meant that every time the guests in the room above us flushed their toilet, it made an unpleasant noise that was jarring enough to wake me up throughout the night. The room was also located immediately next to the outdoor restaurant area and a banquet hall where a private event was hosted during our stay. We could hear noise from both at night - in particular, the private event that was held in the evening in the banquet hall. This made for a disappointing experience during what was supposed to be a relaxing weekend retreat. I was also bummed that the pool didn't have dedicated food and beverage servers. Instead, guests have to go into the spa to place orders. After our stay, I got an email from the hotel asking for feedback on our experience. I emailed the hotel to let them know about the noise issues with our room. I never heard back. Why solicit feedback if you're not even going to acknowledge it? I'd probably visit the restaurant and spa in the future, but wouldn't stay overnight again.

Yelp
I stayed in a suite (#48) in the oak house. The suite itself was stunning! It had everything I needed to feel relaxed while in there. Service was great! 10/10 on this part of the stay. I feel bad for the hotel, as it can't be easy with construction. Tons of noise and fire alarms going off once daily during g my stay. Not their fault, just part of the rejuvenation! If you are there during the construction plan to be out from 8am-5pm and you won't even notice. I wasn't a fan of the restaurant Layla but it was probably the items I ordered. I would try it again. The coffee shop was amazing. Wine list at the bar was very good! All with the best decor! I will definitely be returning once construction is completed. 10/10 outside of the construction!

Yelp
My husband and I had an amazing stay at the MacArthur Place! The customer service, room, amenities, food- everything was 5 star. We booked a room with an outdoor shower and we're so glad we did. The room was beautifully decorated and everything felt intentional. The only thing I'd say is that our room needed a new rug under the bed. It had a few stains so it's probably time to replace it. The outdoor fire pit areas on the grounds were great for early morning coffee and late night cocktails. The overall aesthetic was beautiful. We enjoyed breakfast at Layla, which is their restaurant on the property. My husband loved his avocado toast with salmon and I enjoyed a tasty breakfast sandwich. We also really liked their lattes. The Porch is their coffee shop and we grabbed some coffee and pastries before checking out. I enjoyed a wonderful massage from Rachel at their spa. My husband also used their steam room and was able to relax and unwind. The gentlemen working the valet service were always so kind and offered us water every time we were waiting on our car. We loved every part of our stay and would definitely come back again!

Yelp
MacArthur Place in Sonoma County is definitely a spot that we are glad to have experienced and would highly recommend it to anyone who loves to bring their furbabes along as they travel. Our dog is only two and is still growing into his chill factor. To help ease his high alertness (and be mindful of our neighbors), we called ahead and asked if they would be able to place us in a room that is further away from a lot of foot traffic. Thankfully, MacArthur Place was able to accommodate us and we were able to stay at the far West corner of the property. Aesthetically, I appreciated the neutral tones and minimalistic decor of the suite. There were several large windows in our suit that we were able to open the shades and let the natural sunlight beam through. Overall, the property provided a beautiful space for us to retreat to. We also appreciated that upon arrival, our dog was provided with a fluffy dog bed and dog bowls to use during the stay. He was not shy to put either to use! The overall property of MacArthur Place provided a great sense of retreat. Tall trees and small pockets of garden space surrounds the property and throughout the nooks of the walkway. If you would like to soak up some sun outside of their spa/pool area, there are plenty of outdoor patio seats for guests to enjoy. If you prefer to be by the pool, you can actually bring your dog in as well (they just can't go inside the pool.). This is a nice accommodation that I don't come across often at other hotels/resorts. Layla is a restaurant within the property that has indoor and outdoor seating. With the outdoor seating, it allowed us to bring our dog to join us for dinner. From their Summer 2022 menu, I would recommend their Braised Pork Collar as well as the Classic Cannoli for dessert. Should you get chilly dining outdoors, they have plenty of portable heaters (and blankets) that are available upon request. Aside from a being a beautiful dog-friendly property, I also wanted to recognize that MacArthur Place opts for eco-friendly options such as QR code menus/information in the rooms and offer Just Water bottles to guests. In addition, there are electric bikes available for guests to use to explore the area. Also, the guest service is top notch. Everyone from valet to housekeeping was friendly and would go the distance to make us feel at home. We definitely look forward to coming back again in the future. Tip: If you're an American Express Platinum cardholder, definitely look into booking MacArthur Place through the Fine Hotels + Resorts program. Through the program, you'll be able to take advantage of some great rewards such as guaranteed late check-out (4pm), experience credit, daily breakfast for two, and so forth.

Yelp
Loved this spot in Sonoma! Not fussy at all, and super chic. The grounds are beautifully landscaped. We upgraded to a room with a private patio and outdoor shower and we loved it. The hotel is also dog friendly so my little guy loved the space! Throughout the entire property there were many cute spots for people to sit and relax. The pool is a bit on the smaller side, but it worked out fine for us since we only spent a couple hours here in total for the entire trip. There also isn't poolside service here but you can order to go from the bar or Layla and bring to the pool. They have bike cruisers available for guests I believe. I saw them parked out front of the hotel, but we didn't use them so don't know details of how to reserve. The restaurant Layla is very tasty - see my review on that separately.

Yelp
I was so excited to stay here after reading the reviews and seeing the renovation that took place here. I do have the say the visual aesthetic of the hotel was nice. However, when I'm paying 900 bucks to 1k per night to stay somewhere , I expect some "perks" or even just better customer service. When we booked the hotel, it stated "any special requests"-we were celebrating a baby moon and a quick little getaway for Mother's Day. So we stated this within the request...honestly I don't even know why they ask because no one said congrats or even acknowledged that I was pregnant. We had read on the website that snacks would be provided in the room, upon arriving-we in fact were told that there would be no snacks because of covid-which makes no sense because aren't snacks packed individually? Anyways, we ordered from Layla for dinner the first night-the food was subpar and way overpriced with super small portions. I do give it to Layla, as they redeemed themselves with their breakfast pancakes-I ordered them twice and they were great both times. I also ordered a virgin Bloody Mary for breakfast and they made it with alcohol. I'm pregnant so of course I can't drink alcohol. My husband tried the drink first and we had to reorder. But imagine if I had tried it?? They comped the meal at the end of the day, but kind of scary if you think about the effects it could have had on my baby. Pros: clean room, heated flooring in the bathroom, and water in room as requested, ability to order from Layla in room (with a 20% service charge which they don't even tell you about), dog friendly, beautiful grounds, location of the hotel Cons: not a luxury stay, staff doesn't even seem happy to be there (minus housekeeping-they were very kind and always said hi), the front desk staff isn't that friendly, I can go to a different hotel that charges the same amount and be treated much better. (Be warned of an allergy attack in spring-come prepared with allergy meds) Overall, If the rates are lower I would go, but definitely not somewhere where you would go to get treated like you are at a luxury hotel.

Yelp
Stayed at the MacArthur Place Hotel for a Sonoma getaway. The hotel grounds are beautiful, though there is some construction going on for their pool renovation. The valets and front desk were friendly and welcoming. The room itself was spacious with nice amenities like snacks and coffee/tea. We enjoyed sitting by the fire pits and eating breakfast at their restaurant, Layla. Only minor issue with the room was that there were some ants, though it wasn't enough to bother us significantly. Overall, conveniently located and a good stay.

Yelp
We just finished up our stay here and were sad to leave! A few awesome things to point out: I cannot say enough about how kind and helpful everybody working at the hotel is. It was great chatting with everybody, and we received many great recommendations! I had an amazing experience at the spa - my massage with Rachel was one of the best I've had. The bed was comfortable and the room was nice and spacious. Anytime we needed something, it was brought to us promptly which was very nice!! Valet parking was great and having the electric car charging was helpful. The grounds are beautiful and the hotel location is good! The layout of the hotel makes it easy to navigate. Breakfast at Layla was great! A few points of growth: It would be great to have a fridge that has space in it for food and other things especially with a 4 night stay. We weren't able to keep drinks cold or take leftovers back to the room because the fridge was full with mini bar products. It seems the walls are thin - we could hear conversations of the room above us and hear loud footsteps on the stairs. There were a decent amount of bugs - we found a few spiders in the room. This is part of being out in nature, but maybe spraying for bugs would help! Overall a great stay & we hope to stay again in the future!

Yelp
I had the pleasure of being married at MacArthur in May 2023, the staff service was fantastic. There was construction on the spa at the time, we were warned before and it was very quiet and not disturbing at all. The hotel is gorgeous, the rooms were large and unique. It was pretty quiet during our stay too. The ease of purchasing their wedding package was a no brainer, we got ready in my room, and took gorgeous pictures throughout the campus and go married in the courtyard. Coordinators changed a couple of times from when we signed our contract and at times it did feel like there could have been a bit more communication. Some of the communication was emailed to me during wedding photos and I was asked to meet the coordinator the first time also during the getting ready/first look time of our wedding day. We also had a bit of a charging issue where we were overcharged, but after about a week of emails, that was settled appropriately. We had our dinner at Layla and that was just perfect. The chef did a fantastic job and the server was so kind, patient and personable. I would recommend their wedding package to anyone. Thanks MacArthur for a very memorable wedding.

Yelp
For our stay it was amazing. 5/5 for the services and room! Food wise 3/5. We had heated floor in our bathroom and as you can see a nice fireplace to warm us up and be cozy. This was our first time here and it was a very awesome experience. Upon me and my wife arrival we were greeted by Adam bell boy and Michael who checked us in. Both were very helpful in our plans to enjoying our evening. Asked if we had dinner reservation which we didn't or if we needed anything let them know. At this time the pool area is being renovated so if for some reason it's not to your liking let them know to put you in a better area. As for the bell boy Adam. This dude is very knowledgeable about the area as he does live close by and has great recommendations if you want to venture out and try other eating areas besides the place that inside the resort. I am a big food critic so when it comes to fancy hotels I feel the food needs to match the room service. And it wasn't. I got the MacArthur burger which has a great taste but I got frozen fries? Why? I'm so critical to me when a place offers so much good amenities and then suffer in quality vs quantity. I get it saving time from peeling potato's or saving room in the kitchen but at what cost? I hope they gear there efforts over what there resort aims at fresh made wholesome food. FYI to anyone coming here for the first time I ate at both places Layla and the bar and they have different menus. For all you bougie lovers that wanna eat those fine dinners Layla is your spot. And burger lovers hit the bar for that. Tesla chargers on-site and yes the desert at the bar saved the day for us from eating the frozen fries. So desert chief! Lemon ginger ice cream made in house and apple cream which was fire tasted like an apple pie deconstructed. Coffee lover they have the coffee desert sundae. Not sure exactly what they are called but the names are close enough. For all you honeymooners come on down and check it out. Venture out and look for more places if the food here isn't great we found a little place called sunflower caffe and everything was freshly made. Apple juice and orange freshly squeezed and yes If I'm not mistaken even the ketchup taste fresh like real tomatoes.

Yelp
MacArthur Place is located in the heart of Sonoma wine country. Everything you need is on the property - Layla (popular Mediterranean restaurant), The Bar (order the Spritz Veneziano), and The Porch (coffee bar and marketplace). Relax by the pool or at the spa, read a book or open a bottle of wine at the fire pits, take the electric bikes out around the neighborhood, and explore the Sonoma Valley and Russian River regions for great chardonnays and pinot noirs. THANK YOU to the entire staff for going the extra mile to ensure we were comfortable, felt safe, and enjoyed our time despite COVID and the fires. Looking forward to our next stay!

Yelp
We had a great stay at MacArthur Place! The grounds are beautiful and our garden shower room was clean and well-appointed. We tried Layla for breakfast and dinner, and we also got coffee from The Porch--would recommend both! The staff were all very friendly and helpful. When we arrived, our room was still being cleaned but the front desk was able to switch our room so we could get in earlier than they originally estimated. When we got to the room, it didn't have dog bowls or a dog bed (probably due to the switch), but I called to request both, and they showed up right away. Also, our dog LOVED the dog bed. I briefly considered asking if we could take it with us. The ability to text the front desk is also convenient--I was able to schedule a time for our room to be cleaned and request ice, all over text while off the property. One small point to note--I booked through AmEx FHR, which should've guaranteed a 4PM checkout. At check-in, I was told to simply call the front desk on the morning of our last day to request the late checkout. When I called, I was told they couldn't accommodate 4PM, but could push to 1PM. I assume they were working on a tight schedule ahead of the weekend rush (we checked out on a Friday), but would've appreciated if the front desk had alerted us to this possibility at check-in. Not sure why they guarantee 4PM checkout if they can't always meet it. Still, just a little inconvenience at the end of an otherwise pleasant stay!

Yelp
Fabiola and her team have gone above and beyond to accommodate our family. Everytime we drop by - even if it is just for brunch like today, we end up wanting to stay. There is no place like MacArthur Place. We hope to come here many many more times with our family.

Yelp
Used to come here once a year before the renovations/new ownership. Always stayed at the Jasmine cottage, my favorite room on the property. It truly feels like a country side getaway, walkable distance to downtown Sonoma. Yes it is pricey but the location, service and the steak house with option to rest bicycles are worth it. I did try their spa and wasn't too thrilled, the pool is tiny so definitely not worth if you r main objective is pool time. Not sure how things are now under the new ownership, will have to go by to the steak house and see how the renovations came out.

Yelp
Awesome place! I can't say anything else other than hands down great service and a beautiful location. I was here for my best friends wedding and the maid of honor had a lot of things going on and the employees here made us truly at home and went above and beyond to accommodate everything. Like gals lashes and glue, thank you so much! The rooms are beautiful and so are the grounds. The shower in the suite that goes inside and out is a game changer and invokes beautiful ambience. The snacks in room and the roominess of the bathroom made getting ready pre wedding easy peasy. It rained wedding day and the staff easily made the switch from outside to inside without the the bride and bride even noticing... well you get my drift. They were also very gay friendly which made us all happy. Yay! Great service, good food, nice people, beautiful place. I'd rate it 5 stars yelp!

Yelp
I am surprised by the awful accounting and customer service of the MacArthur Place. I purchased a $250 Layla gift card for a friend that was staying at the hotel. Because MacArthur doesn't email gift cards and our friends were staying at the hotel, I asked for it to be held at the front desk. My friends went to go pick it up and the front desk didn't have it. I called the concierge three times; the first gentleman assured me he would call me back, a few days passed he did not. Shawna, who told me she personally left the card at the front desk, said she would get back to me, she did not. Then I got a hold of someone who said they needed to get a hold of the person who "did the night time shift" and I never heard back. Frustrated, I spoke to a manager Jeff (who "handles all gift cards") who then promised me that he would mail the gift card to our friends since they had returned home. It's been two weeks and our friends still have not received the gift card. I am ashamed that our friends went to the front desk to ask for a gift card that was not there, only to have me "promise" it was in the mail... and for it to be nowhere to be found. The MacArthur fumbled a nice gesture so badly.

Yelp
Loved this place. Upon arrival, it is so dreamy and the valet / welcome staff is so friendly and knowledable about the area - we loved meeting Manuel and Gabe who work the front area! The beds are amazing and the outdoor spaces with fire pits are fabulous. The bar is such a vibe too. Only 4 stars because was under construction and spa and pool closed, with a lot of noise. Decor is a 10/10!

Yelp
MacArthur Place Hotel is located on a residential street offering a quiet location. The common rooms are very inviting and spacious. It seems like a lot of thought went into designing a great spot. The grounds are beautifully groomed and offer a very peaceful and relaxing vibe. Fire pits are located throughout the property with comfortable seating for a morning cup of coffee or a nice glass of wine in the evening. Our room was spacious and beautifully decorated, with the most comfortable bed and pillows. In fact, I had to order the pillows for my home because they were so amazing. The only disappointment was our lunch at the restaurant, Layla. The menu was a bit small, but worked. On the other hand, the cocktails did not disappoint. The food was good, not great. The service was extremely slow! That is the only reason for 4 stars rather than 5. If they could improve on the wait staff, this would have been a 5 star review. I would not hesitate to return, but most likely would not eat at Layla again.

Yelp
Exceptionally beautiful place to stay with wonderful staff, from the valets to check-in to housekeeping. Complimentary champagne or sparking water upon arrival, valet offered to charge my electric car. The grounds are lush, and the rooms are clean, spacious, and luxurious without being pretentious. Nice, easy, flat walk to Sonoma Square and back. The only current drawback is noisy construction in the middle of the property while they renovate the pool area; didn't expect Saturday morning construction, but it did wake me up. Sunday was peaceful, though! Can't wait to return when the renovations are complete. Love this place so much!

Yelp
My wife and I spent 4 amazing days on the MacArthur Place property. The kind hospitality of Michael, who made incredible suggestions about where we could spend time in and around Napa and Sonoma made all of the difference. Kevin, who greeted us upon arrival, parked our car and exchanged our keys for helmets for extremely convenient electric bicycles. These were pivotal to our being able to see the sights up close. The room service was delicious. The room accommodations were resplendent and the service staff was thoughtful and pleasant. We hope that this will be a return destination for us for years to come. Sincerely, The Two Peters

Yelp
This places holds a special place in my heart. My husband and I took a short mini moon right after we got married, and we stayed here (2012). Since then, we have stayed here three more times, and I love it more every time. Last February we stayed in a fab suite with a wonderful patio, fireplace, and couches. We stayed during a four day weekend and it was just the perfect break I needed. For the last weekend of 2017, we drove up from Redwood City, and spent the night here. In the past I've had the chance to get a facial at the spa and a massage. Both were absolutely amazing. We've even had couples massages, too. Each time we come we enjoy taking an early morning or late evening dip in the pool or spend some time in the hot tub. The library, chess garden, and continental breakfast are all great, too. My husband and I have also walked to and from downtown Sonoma from MacArthur, so if you're up for a 15 minute walk--do it! The rooms have always been clean and well maintained, and staff members are courteous and polite. I can't wait to visit again!

Yelp
I've had many relaxing visits to this serene place, but today's visit to the spa/pool was utterly disappointing. This hotel recently became an Auberge hotel - a beautiful reno and prices that reflect an upscale resort. I was surprised when around 1pm the pool turned into a community pool with kids and Marco Polo galore. I'm a parent of two - so I'm not anti kids, but when I pay for a spa and visit to a resort - I expect an environment that reflects that. The service in the pool area was dismal as well... food and all the wine was the silver lining bright spot. They ran out of stemware, forgot orders, etc. I don't know what the answer is here: a separate pool for GUESTS (not local families as it seemed), or age rules around the pool use. It was an actual ZOO. I'm not sure I'll be back until something changes here.

Yelp
Perfect. Simply perfect. The rooms, the amenities, the service, the location... it made for a perfect weekend getaway in Sonoma. Let's start with the service - upon arriving for check in from a long day, they offered us warm towels to refresh ourselves. Such a nice gesture! We were even greeted by the hotel cat, who likes to sleep around the lobby and is friendly to visitors petting him. Although I had booked my room through a Groupon special ($400 for 2 nights after taxes), they went ahead and upgraded us to the queen deluxe. The queen deluxe room was huge for 2 people, and even included an extra day bed. Both beds were comfy and we slept really well. Love their complimentary turn down service, since they give you chocolate on your pillows! The bathrooms were quite spacious, with a 2 person shower and lots of counter space. I love the bath amenities - the lotions and bar soaps sample products from the hotel's spa and the they even provide makeup remove wipes and cotton balls/swabs. The shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are grape seed oil products from the hotel's line, and they are dispensers inside the shower... so you don't have to worry about running out. Usually when I stay at a hotel I plan on being out the whole day... but this was the kind of hotel where I didn't want to leave! The grounds are lovely with some unique statues like the giant chess set (which you can play) and a swing set. There's a library near the lobby which is a great common space to relax - they have games to play like Scrabble and checkers, and they even have an impressive DVD collection that you can borrow to watch from your room. We spent part of our evenings playing board games and watching movies. Last but not least there is the pool area - water temperature in the pool was perfect for swimming outdoors or at night. The hot tub was wonderfully relaxing after a long day of walking. There was also fruit spa water for drinking and plenty of towels available. They even have a ping pong table by the pool if you're feeling game. The evening wine reception in the library is a great because they bring in local wineries, so you get to try more places in Sonoma without having to drive. I do like that they provide cheese, fruit, and crackers to pair with your wine (blue cheese and crackers go amazing with white wine BTW). I'd recommend coming to the wine reception pretty early since the snacks can run out fairly quickly, and they only have 2 platters of cheese and fruit for the evening. The complimentary breakfast at Saddles Restaurant is delicious and healthy - lots of fresh fruit, pastries, and muesli. They even had homemade jam that came in little jars! I wish they had some protein though, as the only source was through the boiled eggs and the salmon cream cheese. Still it was a good way to start off our day. Location wise the hotel is perfect - really close to wineries like Cline and Jacuzzi, but it's also within walking distance of Downtown Sonoma! About 15 minutes and flat terrain the entire way. Really useful if you plan on drinking at night. It was nice to just walk to our restaurant for dinner without having to worry about parking. This hotel is more expensive than what I'm used to paying for, but it was definitely worth every penny. I never felt so relaxed during a trip... and I actually enjoyed just staying at the hotel. If I ever find a similar deal for another weekend, I'm totally booking again!
