MacCallum House Inn

Excellent food and customer service. The cornmeal pancakes were fantastic, the view was gorgeous, and the room was so comfortable! We were very impressed with our stay there, and would happily go back any time. The beach was close, and there were plenty of restaurants and shops within walking distance. The staff were very knowledgeable and kind, and made the stay exceptional.

We had the best stay at ocean song #20. The house was better than imagined, big 2 bed room, lots of room for us to be together or spread out, plenty of kitchen pots pans etc for cooking, so many keurig pods (yay!), comfy sofa for lots of people, smart TVs in every bedroom and living rooms, hot showers, hot tub, laundry, great wifi, cozy and warm, views from everywhere, a block from trails. Beds sooooooo soft and comfy and warm. Provided everything we needed for a getaway 2 parents and 3 big kids. One of our favorite places so far.

I stayed here (a week night) on a solo trip through the area. They were nice enough to accommodate my need for a single night stay (usually it's a two night minimum during the busy season) at a good price for what the location is. Specially considering they seemed busy enough with a wedding happening on the weekend. The room (7) was cozy with a detached bath facility. It was just as described when booking. No surprises there. The Wi-Fi was temperamental, but I wasn't there for the Wi-Fi. I was pretty much there for the location and the ability to explore the town on foot. Fantastic location obviously and the staff were polite, courteous, and very accommodating. I didn't get to experience the restaurant because I needed to leave early (breakfast was otherwise included).

We have stayed at MacCallum House since 2004 when we stayed for our honeymoon. We have come back with our kids multiple times since then. We stayed in the Jedediah Smith House this time and we stayed there several times in the past. We love being there in the winter. We have no issues with rain. However, this time, the main bedroom flooded when there was a lot of rain. We called the front desk multiple times and nothing was done. There was also a horrendous fly problem. We were constantly swatting and killing flies. When we complained when we left, we were told the manager would contact us. I have sent 3 follow up emails and never heard back. I just filed a complaint with the BBB. The quality of this business has declined dramatically in the past few years and I don’t recommend that anyone stay here now.

The room and deck need to be updated. The deck especially should be replaced and the shrubs should be trimmed and cleaned off the deck. The room itself is OK. The bathroom has been updated, but the toilet ran constantly as the pull chain was too long for the toilet and had to be manually picked up so the toilet would stop running. Bed was comfortable and the fireplace was a nice feature.

Walked out to Macallum house from the back road wanting to rent a room for the night. Saw the tent was up as usual for outdoor dining, didn't think anything of it. Staff were super hostile, apparently there was a wedding going on, and accused us of breaking into the property? Caught us totally off guard but they went as far as to threaten to call the police. It was really weird. We just wanted to spend some money on a room for the night. We left the property when we found out it was booked but were followed off and treated like criminals. Super strange elitist behavior. Edit: We did not refuse to leave when told their was a private event being held. The businesses employee followed us out (weird) and berated us as we stood on the PUBLIC street outside the back entrance to Macallum. We had left and were discussing what to do next when the employee followed us and threatened to call the cops. Just because we are two young people who made an honest mistake doesn't mean we deserve to be treated like criminals. And of course rather than admit wrong doing and apologize for their rude and, frankly, discriminatory employee conduct the business doubles down. C'est la vie.

We stayed at MacCallum House for 5 nights and in general it was a nice experience. We were in room 9 which was basic but all we needed - I wouldn't consider it pristine and luxurious, but it was certainly nice. The deck and hot tub in our room were fenced in, though there are some neighboring balconies so I wouldn't call it totally private. The location was fantastic, with short walks to shopping and restaurants, and to the Mendocino Headlands Park. Why this isn't a 5 star review: This really is a "Hotel and Restaurant", so if you're looking for a traditional Bed and Breakfast experience, this isn't it. The staff overall was friendly enough, but not as welcoming as I would have expected. Some were great, while others seemed indifferent or like they really didn't want to be there - not engaging with guests, forgetting things we asked for, etc. The feeling in general was pretty impersonal like a traditional hotel. The food at the restaurant is very delicious, we ate dinner here twice and it was great, but breakfast options in particular are limited. Eggs benedict, 2 eggs any style with potatoes, or pancakes is all there is to choose from. As mentioned in other reviews too, breakfast is included with your stay but you have to cover a mandatory 20% tip for service and any add-ons outside one dish per person are not included. So technically, yes, breakfast is included, but only one entree per person and tee/coffee - even getting a latte is not included. Feels tacky for an "included" breakfast. Overall Mendocino is a great place to visit and I'd highly recommend it, but I think if we returned, we would look to stay somewhere else. MacCallum House overall was good, but the details for an amazing guest experience fell a little short.

I’m a little late on this review… life caught up with us! We got married through the MacCallum House Inn elopement package in April of 2024 and I could not be happier. The staff were accommodating, our room and service magical, and the dinner exceeded our expectations. My family gushes about the Inn, its amenities, and that 5 course meal to this day. I can’t wait to go back to celebrate anniversaries and life’s other special moments.
