Such a lovely place for historic reasons. People there are so knowledgeable and seem to genuinely enjoy telling the history of the area. Spent a fair amount of time here learning and walking around. There is a small area to get reasonable priced souvenirs - recommend. Seems like a place some youth like to hang out or do some group activities such as dance practice, yoga/exercises maybe, or just relax together. There are restrooms available too.

Rated only four-stars (probably should be three) because for such a historic place, there is practically NO information provided. Very sad. Some historians should band together and force the city to provide more information for such a rich historical event (and the information leading up to and after the event). I am glad that I visited the site, just sad at how the Philippine government completely missed an opportunity to truly honor the event by provided something more than a damn statue. Information is complimentary and necessary to accompany the large statue. The history of this site demands more that just a statue (I do not care how big the statue is!). The small placard description is shameful and does not do justice to the historical site. Regardless of my personal feelings on how the Philippine government should increase the quality of the experience you get when you visit -- go visit the site and experience it for yourself.

Ok for a morning visit. The surroundings are very peaceful in the mornings, and the area is a bit crowded around the afternoon and night. Its a great park for oponganons. There is decent parking too. There is a place for small concerts too. Plus the shades from trees and great breeze from the nearby beach.

The place is ok. A public park with a ton of history. Can use some cleaning. But definitely go here if you're into history like me. Mind blowing markers and descriptions by NHI.

Short walk from the Belmont hotel.. nice place to take some photos of historical significance they have a strip of shops that you can buy some gifts and they also customize some of the little bracelets that you can take home to friends and family.

It was ok to visit one time. Just a park or place where people were hanging out! Other than 4 statues there is nothing to see.

Mactan-Philippines IG: SPICEPINKIE1 Also known as Lapu-Lapu Monument is a park with 2 main statues : the Magellan Monument, which is dedicated to Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan and the Lapu Lapu Monument, a bronze statue which commemorates Lapu Lapu, a native leader who defeated Spanish soldiers led by Magellan in the 1521 Battle of Mactan Beautiful park. Free to enter. There are beggers. I would say safe. Controlled by police.

You should have seen it. It's nice to look at, there are souvenir shops in the upper area. Outside they are trying to get rent for the parking space for the motorbike. It is not an official parking lot and there are no tickets.

Yelp
I'm not really a history buff, but whenever I get the chance to see landmarks, it's a must-stop. My party of ten was on the verge of going into a food coma (we overstuffed ourselves just minutes before) so it was a great idea to make stops at a couple tourist spots before checking into our hotel. This was stop ONE. We were lucky enough to come through and found only a few other tourists present. (We expected a crowd, given it was a weekend.) It's also kinda cool to find local guides available giving us a thorough story regarding the significance of the entire area. I will admit that I felt the history going through me as I walked the grounds. Weird, I know... I've only heard or read about this place, and I found it amazing to finally find myself here! Oh, and those guides are not only incredibly knowledgeable, they were also willing to take pictures with as many cameras as you have. They did their job well, so fam made sure they were tipped well. We took our time and breathed all the experience in. One thing off the checklist...

Yelp
Lapu Lapu Shrine and Magellan Shrine [LAPU-LAPU CITY, CEBU Philippines] Anytime I get a chance to visit a landmark I am grateful for the opportunity. Mactan Shrine was just outside the Mactan Newport development. No admission fee and open to the public. It is a remembrance of the Battle of Mactan. As we were walking towards inside to view the monuments, out of nowhere was this stranger who started to give us a little history of what transpired in this actual location. The Battle of Mactan happened in 1521. The Mactan Shrine was established in 1969 as a national shrine. This was where Lapu-Lapu (Filipino warrior) killed Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan. The shrine was built on the spot where the battle took place. Every year, on April 27, they have a re-enactment festival of the historic battle and Filipino ring superstar Manny Pacquiao played the role once as chieftain Lapu-Lapu during a re-enactment of the Battle of Mactan in Cebu. We thanked the impromptu tour guide. Consequently he was also a good photographer LoL! We tipped him for his kind gesture. It was a cool short history lesson. Review #3334

Yelp
The Philippines has so many historical sites that are worth seeing, and this is one of them. In 1521 Lapu Lapu was the first Filipino to fight off Spanish Invaders and win. The shrine is a symbol of the hard fought battle by this brave chief and his warriors. Respect!

Yelp
The traffic in and out of this place sucks, but hey, welcome to island living! It's a hearty place for history and culture, the spot where Lapu Lapu is said to have met Magellan and his crew. They gloss over this history lesson in the West, so it was awesome to see Lapu Lapu's statue, examples of huts the natives were living in over 500 years ago, and soak it in. There are souvenir sharks but they stick to their stalls and are not aggressive at all.
