My Top 9 Hostels in Sydney for 2025

"I appreciate Mad Monkey on Broadway for its soft beds, clean showers with great water pressure, and free breakfasts, plus yoga classes and included access to a local gym. The staff organizes activities and nights out (including a traditional Australian BBQ), so it’s easy to meet people, and the central location and friendly staff make it one of my favorites — just be aware the common areas and kitchen are small, making it hard to cook when others are around, and dorms have an age limit (18–35; private rooms 18–39)." - Matthew Kepnes

Great hostel with an amazing price-performance ratio. The rooms are clean, the beds comfortable, and everything is well organized. The staff is very friendly and always helpful, and the common areas make it easy to meet other travelers. Perfect choice if you’re looking for a budget-friendly place with everything you need.

We waited a few days to write this review in a calm and objective way, especially since we left after just 2 out of 4 nights. Our first impression was positive: central location, early room access (8 a.m.). But it quickly became clear why the room was already available: the beds were only superficially made up, duvets folded, but visibly dirty (sand, hair, stains - see pictures). The sheets smelled strongly of old sweat. Despite asking several times, the beds were not freshly made, so we ended up doing it ourselves. The other beds remained untouched/dirty throughout our stay. The whole situation felt strange. The room was far too small for 6 people. No hooks or shelves. Luggage had to be stuffed into the lockers or hung on the beds. It smelled musty, a mix of sweat/mold/dampness. The carpet was sticky. There was hardly any sunlight, as the small window faced a inner shaft-like yard. We saw a cockroach and an unidentified white bug on the bed (even Google Lens couldn’t recognize it). The upstairs showers were relatively new and friendly. But overall, we felt like outsiders. The staff changed constantly. One working girl told us that residents work here in exchange for certain benefits (?). There's nothing wrong with that in itself we think. But because of that we had impression that some of the positive reviews we had relied on as regular travelers might actually come from these people. Some of them didn’t even respond to a simple “good morning”. We felt like money is being made here without investing in hygiene or room quality (at least not in our case). Our room (No. 13) was by far the worst we’ve ever stayed in. We also told the guy at the front desk all of this when we checked out. As experienced travelers, we can’t understand how this hostel in general can be described as very clean. That was definitely not our experience. If somebody cares about the location, you might be fine here, but everyone else should consider spending a little more for something better. Cleanliness is very important to us, which is why we decided to give only one star. And to the team or management: Please skip the copy-paste we’re sorry-replies. Get to the point and address the issues we’ve raised. We hope that you will take our concerns as an opportunity to take action. After all, that's what the review function here on Google is for.

Really great atmosphere, super friendly staff, and you get to use the gym right around the corner. The staff also arrange a lot of great social events everyday! My only complaint is that the rooms can be pretty cold in winter so make sure to bring some warm clothes if you're visiting in those months.

I have only been here for a few days, but I already love it! The long term residents are quite sociable and have given me tips for finding work in the area. This is the cleanest hostel I have stayed in. Hooray Mad Monkey! On Broadway :3

Great hostel. Comfortable rooms, great staff. Different social events each night including pasta night, pizza night and nachos and sangria night which help to save money on food and make friends during your travels. Great location not far from the cbd and a local shopping centre/ food court. 5 stars would stay again

Very social hostel. I liked my time here very much. Also you get a free gym pass which saves you plenty of money. I can recommend this hostel to everyone.

If I could give this place zero stars, I would. Calling it a hostel is honestly misleading—it’s more like a run-down shelter with beds crammed together in filth. The smell hits you the second you walk in: a nauseating mix of mold, body odor, and something that died in the walls long ago. Around 90% of the people staying here seem to be permanent residents with nowhere else to go, which turns the whole atmosphere into something deeply unsettling. It’s loud, tense, and incredibly uncomfortable. I felt like I was intruding in someone else’s crumbling living room rather than checking into a temporary place to stay. The environment is disgusting. Sticky floors, overflowing trash, and bathrooms that look like they haven’t seen proper cleaning in months. It’s clear that cleanliness is not a priority—or even a passing thought—at this place. Management doesn’t help either. Katie, the manager, is more of a chaotic presence than a professional one, and her behavior only adds to the overall feeling of disorganization and disregard. Oh, and about those glowing 5-star reviews? They hand out free laundry in exchange for them—which explains a lot. Do yourself a favor and stay literally anywhere else. Sleeping outside would be cleaner and more peaceful. This place should not be taking travelers’ money.

I stayed in quite some Hostels ut that was one of the Hostels I would never stay again if I can get something else. For the service quite expensive. Small kitchen and always dirty and smelled really bad. Besides that I had the honor to meet a rat and a lot of cockroaches in the kitchen. The bathrooms were okay but smelled like wet dirt a lot of times. The room itself was small but that's okay. What I didn't liked was that it was always dirty even after Simone vacuumed it was still dirty. The vacuum was basically not working. What I definitely disliked was that the housekeeping when they came in let the door open after the left while people where still inside the room. Cleanliness in general was not that good, neither in the rooms, the bathrooms, the kitchen or the entrance area. Sticky desks, crumps everywhere. Not nice. Besides that is it more like a party hostel not one to get some quiet time
