Where to Stay in Sydney (Updated 2025)

"I found this budget hostel right on the beach to be social and practical with a cool co-working space and plenty of nearby bars and restaurants; it’s not fancy and can be a little noisy, so it’s better for those who want atmosphere over quiet." - Matthew Kepnes

I loved my stay here - the location is perfect for the beach and for buses into the city. I stayed in an 8 bed dorm, which was fine. The beds are comfy, but there's no storage in the rooms and you couldn't move once all 8 beds were filled. Cleanliness was good, & staff were really friendly. One day we did come back to our room to find our stuff ALL over the place mixed in with everyone else's, I'm guessing this was down to whoever swept the floor that day - that didn't leave a great taste. I've not yet stayed in a hostel where the TV has been blasting sport so often, and I did feel this detracted from the experience. Overall would absolutely recommend & stay again.

Highly recommend! Such an awesome place. Specifically mondays because Alfie cooks the most insane pancakes. Booked my stay an extra week just for the pancakes.

The location and the view from the hostel are fantastic! The staff is also very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, the condition of the hostel leaves a bit to be desired. On the bunk beds, the top bunk is so low that you can’t sit upright on the bottom one (I’m 1.75m tall). The bathroom and toilet also feel a bit outdated. Something else I found a bit confusing: the hostel carries the Mad Monkey name, but it has little in common with the typical Mad Monkey concept – especially when it comes to food, events, and tours. My conclusion: With some renovations and a bit more of that Mad Monkey vibe, this hostel could have much more potential!

Hostel has a great location and very friendly staff however I would never stay again - the rooms have no air conditioning making it virtually impossible to sleep as it was hotter in the room than it was outside, even in 30 degree heat. The particular room I was staying in (room 9) was very small and had no lockers for storage, it also didn’t even had a window in view as one of the bunks was blocking it. I ended up having to check out a day early because I was so exhausted from the lack of sleep I was getting it ended putting a downer on my whole trip. Again though the staff were lovely and obviously I don’t blame them for this.

This hostels location is unbeatable. It’s right by the beach and the bus. Personally, I felt I had a lot of personal space in the rooms and the beds felt pretty fine. The staff are friendly too. Despite being social hostel, I had no problems sleeping or with noise. It was never loud inside or outside to the point where it was disruptive. Cons: Just beware that there quite a few roaches (big and small) here and that in my experience all the guests had seen them and become desensitized to them. Additionally, it was pretty cool when I was there, but I could imagine the rooms get extremely hot when the temp is higher. In terms of it being social, I felt like there are already groups here so the events didn’t really do much.

The people? Amazing. The room? Nice and tidy? The pancakes? Possibly the best thing in coogee. Alfie is a talented man
