Madada Mogador

"The friendly French owner and cheerful Moroccan staff at this intimate seven-room riad hotel in Essaouira make you feel more like a houseguest than someone occupying a hotel room. Accommodations are individually decorated with a mix of Moroccan and French-colonial-style pieces, and spacious bathrooms have hand-hammered brass sinks and tadelakt soaking tubs. The lounge has a wood-burning fireplace, there’s a charming bar just beyond a fifteenth-century stone archway, and the excellent restaurant specializes in seafood fresh from Essaouira’s bustling port."

Madada Mogador, Essaouira, Morocco - Explore & Book

"It is arguable that Christine, the glamorous French owner of this sleek maison d’hotes, has acquired one of the best hotel locations in Essaouira. A stone's throw from the shore, Madada Mogador gazes out over the sparkling Atlantic waves. And the medina is just steps away, so when you've haggled your way to a new bag and a bevvy of spices, you can retreat to the hotel’s sheltered terrace for a cooling complimentary glass of lemonade overlooking the beach. Once the haven of Jewish merchants, this historic building traces back to the 1800s. Today it houses 9 rooms and suites that blend the best of past and present, and elegantly salute its rich heritage. It's a welcoming place to kick back and relax; the interiors are spacious and stylishly renovated in shades of cream and taupe. The fantastic restaurant is a destination in itself, serving delicious Moroccan cuisine, which you can learn to replicate in the hotel's cookery school - a translator will even help you gather spices from the souk. On chilly nights, sip cocktails in the bar, and come bedtime you’ll find a hot water bottle warming the sheets. Christine has even more projects in the pipeline, including a concept store, but her focus remains on making your stay the best it can be. Highs A hard-to-beat location on Essaouira’s ramparts, right by the beach and the medinaA fantastic roof terrace with panoramic beach and harbour views Excellent staff provide warm and efficient serviceA superb ground-floor restaurant/bar, plus a well-regarded cookery school for honing your skills Families are welcome although it is a quiet, relaxing sort of space Lows Some rooms look out onto the shared terrace but the one-way glass means no one can see inThose visiting for the first time might be put off by the slightly European vibe, which is different from the typical Moroccan styleThe nearest parking is in the public harbour lots, which are about a 2-minute walk away" - Glenda Richards

"Technically, perhaps, it’s a riad, but when it comes to atmosphere, Madada Mogador has a lot more in common with some small European boutique hotels than it does with the traditional Moroccan courtyard house. This is no bad thing. If you want old-world atmosphere, there are plenty of places to find it — but if you want picturesque Essaouira seaside charm mixed with cosmopolitan, contemporary boutique style, then this is the place for you." - Tablet Hotels

This high class Riad is perfectly situated close to the beach, the bustling port and the Medina. Although a little cramped in the public areas, our suite was enormous, on three levels and tastefully decorated. We did have to go through a small kitchen to get to our door, but that was never a problem. We took our breakfast in our suite, which we enjoyed. The staff were always pleasant and very helpful, and we enjoyed our stay very much. The Riad is also above their truly magnificent restaurant, although I'll talk about that wonderful experience in another post!

Beautifully situated hotel! This boutique hotel sits at the edge of the medina, within a stone's throw of the picturesque port, and overlooking the ocean. I could sit on the roof terrace all day! Really loved my room, it was lovely and unique with an ocean view. I looked forward to my breakfast every morning looking at the view. You must visit the hotel's restaurant next door the food was absolutely delicious!

A big thank you to the amazing hotel staff for their warm hospitality. Everyone was friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Special thanks to Amin and Oussama for going above and beyond. Breakfast was excellent each morning, and kudos to the housekeeping team for keeping everything spotless and comfortable.

Lovely hotel in a fantastic location overlooking the Atlantic. It’s a small hotel which is its charm . The views are wonderful and it’s perfectly located for exploring the port and the medina . Essaouria itself is fabulous . Breakfasts were lovely and if temperature warm enough can be served on the terrace. Their adjoining restaurant is excellent .

We spent four nights here and very much enjoyed out stay (in the 'Madada' room with its huge bathroom). It's a small boutique hotel, just inside the walls, which is well-appointed and with friendly and helpful staff. Nice breakfasts, and there's also a lovely roof terrace with views of the beach and across to the port.|Not the cheapest spot, but very good value for money and a great location - everything's only 5-10 minutes' walk away.

We felt so lucky to have been advised to stay at the Madada. Great location cloe to the Souks, sea and port, what more do you need. Clean quiet with a warm welcome from the team ever time you returned. The ladies who made breakfast and biscuits cooked triumphantly, with fresh little touches every day to mix up the breakfast offering. The rooms were spacious and airy and well maintained, with our 3 children sharing a larger room with Terrace which was much used as the five of us gathered there to have pre dinner drinks. Lovely big baths to soak in after a day sightseeing., clean linen and delicious toiletries, perfect.
