"The friendly French owner and cheerful Moroccan staff at this intimate seven-room riad hotel in Essaouira make you feel more like a houseguest than someone occupying a hotel room. Accommodations are individually decorated with a mix of Moroccan and French-colonial-style pieces, and spacious bathrooms have hand-hammered brass sinks and tadelakt soaking tubs. The lounge has a wood-burning fireplace, there’s a charming bar just beyond a fifteenth-century stone archway, and the excellent restaurant specializes in seafood fresh from Essaouira’s bustling port."

A stone's throw from the shore, Madada Mogador gazes out over the sparkling Atlantic waves. Once the haven of Jewish merchants, this historic building traces back to the 1800s. "Technically, perhaps, it’s a riad, but when it comes to atmosphere, Madada Mogador has a lot more in common with some small European boutique hotels than it does with the traditional Moroccan courtyard house. This is no bad thing.
