Madikwe Safari Lodge, Madikwe Game Reserve - Explore & Book

"Bordering Botswana and within easy reach of Jo'burg, Madikwe is one of South Africa’s largest game reserves and the best non-malarial safari area in Africa. Of its 30+lodges, Madikwe Safari Lodge is one of our favourites. Perched on a hillside, it's really a collection of 3 separate camps: Lelapa, with just 12 suites, is exceptionally good for families, while Dithaba and Kopano, with 4 suites apiece and a private 3-bedroom villa at the latter, are more intimate and best suited to couples and small groups. Whichever you choose, they're a cut above the rustic, giving stylish sanctuary from the beasts beyond. You're guaranteed a private plunge pool and curved stone walls that lead you out into open-plan sitting-dining areas with big squishy sofas you just want to flop on. Flashes of bright-yellow weaver birds swoop across the wooden decking by day and roaring log fires keep you toasty at night. A spoiling welcoming committee gave us the hot towel and refreshing drinks routine, but we felt staff had a genuine desire to give us the most wonderful wild experience, too. It's a polished affair with great food and very knowledgeable guides, and this is balanced with a homely vibe we were loath to leave. Magical, with a great ‘sense of place’ and spirit of adventure, we felt it deserved to be on anyone's bucket list. Highs Malaria-free reserve, home to the famous ‘Big Five’, a straighforward 4-5hr drive from Jo’burg airport and less crowded than Kruger Beautifully designed, well-run luxury camps with huge rooms, each with a private plunge pool Lelapa is one of the best family-friendly safari camps in Africa, with no age limit and lots of fun activities to keep youngsters busy Their tranquil spa offers a range of massages and body treatments using local, ethical products The lodge now hosts Madikwe Wildlife Foundation in their staff village, sponsoring their accommodation to support their vital work protecting endangered species, especially rhinos. Lows Not cheap, but when you consider what's included, the stunning setting and how well you're looked after, we thought it was good value and well worth it Rooms have thatched roofs and gaps underneath doorways so you may encounter insect life at night; mosquito nets are provided on request There can be up to 8 people sharing a safari vehicle, but we really enjoyed meeting other guests When the weather closes in, internal flights can get cancelled at short notice but you don't save a massive amount of time by flying here, so we'd recommend driving anyway - hire a 4x4, or transfers can be arranged" - Aidan Forestier-Walker

I can’t find the words to properly convey just how wonderful our time was here. ||Every single detail from the Lodge itself, to the staff, the food, the setting and of course the game drives, was immaculate. ||Beautiful clean, spacious and comfortable lodges, INCREDIBLE food, bubbly and friendly staff members, and of course, our Ranger: Regard, who was hilarious, informative and all round an excellent guy to spend our time with. We are so grateful.||The view from our lodge was just opposite the water hole, where elephants gathered all day long and we could sit and watch with a cup of coffee or lunch. It was so special.||I also visited the spa and got an Aromatherapy massage which was bliss, and once again of course all of the staff members were welcoming, helpful and so lovely to be around.||I’m so sad to be leaving, and I will remember this place and our experiences here forever. Thank you so much to everybody, I feel extremely lucky to have stayed here and had this experience.

Dear Rhulani - Team We spent three unforgettable days at Rhulani Lodge in the Madikwe Game Reserve, and honestly – nothing could have been more perfect. From the very first moment, everything was exceptional – warm-hearted service, wonderful hosts, and a team that put a smile on our faces every single day. The atmosphere was genuine, welcoming, and filled with attention to every little detail. Our special thanks go to Allistar, our safari guide – our very own Lion King! With incredible knowledge, professionalism, and passion for the bush, he gave us the most breathtaking wildlife experiences. We have never met anyone quite like him – he knows everything about Madikwe, every animal, and somehow manages to find them all! And his driving skills are legendary – when it comes to tracking rare wild dogs, the Toyota magically turns into a Ferrari. 🦁🚙 We will never forget the special moments – like the coffee break with Amarula in the middle of the bush and the sundowners at the most stunning spots in the park. A heartfelt thank you to Allistar and the entire Rhulani team for an experience we will treasure forever. Absolutely outstanding – it simply doesn’t get any better! We came as guests and felt as we left this morning as friends ♥️ ⸻

We had an amazing stay at Dithaba Lodge. The whole team went above and beyond to make our stay memorable, especially Frank and Ryan.||||Frank was incredible, he was constantly checking in to ensure we had everything we needed and that we were happy 24/7. Ryan's game drives were fantastic - he was determined to find us everything we specifically wanted to see and even woke up early 2 days in a row to take us to the other side of the park. Gerty's service was brilliant and we really enjoyed Bengie's company and stories too.||||The lodge itself is really classy and elegantly kitted out while still keeping the essence of the bush, and the rooms are spacious, well-kitted, and have an amazing outdoor area with a private plunge pool.||||Another highlight was the food - the meals at Dithaba were up there with the best we've had at game lodges. Each meal was different and unique and we loved them all.||||We'll definitely be recommending this lodge and would love to come back.

We stayed at Lelapa for 3 nights in September 2025 and had the most amazing time! We had a dedicated guide named Nel who took us on 2 game drives each day. She was extremely knowledgeable about the bush and went above and beyond to help us create wonderful memories. All the staff at Madikwe were friendly and attentive. We stayed in a beautiful, spacious, family room which had a connecting room for our kids and they loved the bunk beds and large animal soft toys. They also each received a string bag with a book (and pencils) to tick off all the animals they saw whilst on safari and a personalized water bottle. We also loved our personalized water bottles. The Lodge’s lounge and dining area were beautiful and it had a view of a watering hole which many animals frequented on a daily basis, including elephants! We will most definitely like to visit Madikwe again in the near future.

We stayed 5 nights at Madikwe Safari Lodge and it exceeded every expectation. The food was outstanding – every meal felt special and beautifully prepared. The lodge itself is gorgeous, with stunning views and wonderful facilities that make you feel both pampered and at home. The people are what make this place so special – everyone we met was warm, genuine, and went out of their way to make our stay perfect. And of course, the game drives were unforgettable. We saw the many animals up close, guided by a ranger who was not only knowledgeable but clearly passionate about the bush. Each drive was exciting and different, and we came away with memories we’ll cherish forever. Madikwe Safari Lodge is a true gem. We left with full hearts and are already dreaming about coming back.

We stayed at Madikwe’s Dithaba Lodge as part of our honeymoon and had an incredible experience. We saw all the big five in less than 24 hours, and many more animals in the three days that followed, thanks to our amazing guide Ryan. You spend a lot of time with the guides but he was such fun to be around and incredibly knowledgeable.||||The team at Dithaba made our breaks between game drives equally memorable. Frank, Gerty are fantastic, always making sure our glasses were filled and every want taken care of. Another shout out to Bengie - we loved hearing his stories about all the wildlife he saw on the night shift.||||The lodge itself is beautiful with only a few rooms. We loved sitting by the pool watching and listening to animals in the distance. The food was incredible, some of the best we’ve ever had. Thank you so much to everyone at Dithaba, and we hope to return at some point in the future!

Of the three lodges and areas in South Africa we visited, this was by far the best. Our stay in Kopano was outstanding with a personal service being given and amazing food. Really enjoyed our time with our guide Regard. Thanks to him we had great sightings of cheetah, wild dogs and brown hyena. A memorable experience. Thanks to you all

First, starting by saying the guide and staff were fantastic. Attentive. Helpful. Friendly. All of it. ||||Next, the property, vehicles, experience out on the reserve were amazing. We saw the big five, stopped to have a snack and drinks, and had every and any question answered. ||||The food was good. Home made breads. Cooking and kitchen were great!||||The property itself was nice and captured the look and feel of what I would expect. ||||Finally, and sadly, the room was "meh". The plunge pool was dirty, the shower didn't drain well, the wifi in my room was zero, the lighting was terrible. The bed was comfy but there seems to just be a miss on how its all put together. ||||Recommended generally. Just not great if you're a working person who needs to check in or see one's face when shaving or trying to read a book in your room.
