Day Trips in Amsterdam

"Windmills turn, airplanes land, trains run, and boats float in interactive exhibits that tell the story behind Dutchies’ battle against water at this mini-theme park in The Hague. Like an outdoor history lesson, the miniature city replicates historic Dutch towns, ports, canals, roads, and monuments on a 1/25 scale. Mini versions of Schiphol, Rotterdam Port, Dam Square, and other landmarks of the Netherlands add a geographic perspective. From Amsterdam Central, take the Intercity train to Den Haag Central. Transfer to Bus #9 to Madurodam. The trip should take just over an hour." - MATADOR_NETWORK

"Madurodam: The Story of Holland in Miniature If visiting a miniature version of a country the size of a postage stamp makes no sense to you, stay away from Madurodam, a top tourist attraction in Den Haag featuring historic Dutch towns, ports, canals, roads and monuments re-created on a 1/25 scale. On the other hand, if you fancy learning about the history of a nation that would be underwater were it not for Dutch ingenuity, by all means visit this interactive park that tells the story behind the battle against water, as well as many historic venues that still exist in Holland today."

If you have a small child - this place may be entertaining for the family. The models, games and other rides are perfect for Children up to 8 years of age. Still, for young children this could be a fun diversion:

Great experience for adults and kids. Plenty of interactive setups to keep the kids engaged and interested, while admiring the great miniature cities. There are also other experiences scattered within the park. Good - clean - interactive and engaging activities - park for kids and adults - impressive miniature landmarks - facilities (toilets, restaurants, playgrounds)

Great day spent having a great time!! 3 kids, 10, 10 & 7 all enjoyed & did ALL the stuff. A piece of advice.....make sure u have a change of clothes for the kids cuz there are 2 water games. They only spray a bit of water BUT our kids stayed in both for a while & were dripping wet!!😂🤣😂🤣 Was perfect for a nice summer day!!

Madurodam was my favorite experience during my entire trip to the Netherlands. I loved exploring the miniature versions of Dutch cities and landmarks. It felt like traveling through the whole country in just a few hours. My favorite parts were steering the ships through the canals, controlling the helicopter, and interacting with the fun exhibits like attracting the fishes. The park is very well designed, with so many details that bring Dutch history, architecture, and culture to life. It’s both educational and entertaining, making it a great place for families, couples, or solo travelers. I would recommend it as one of the first stops for tourists visiting the Netherlands. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. Parking was a little pricey, but that might just be my perspective as a visitor from abroad. Overall, I would definitely like to return and see it again.

Google
Fun place. We attained by a tour from Amsterdam. Spent an hour here. It is a great way to understand the Netherlands in one miniature place. So great for kids with lots of buttoned and things to see. Has washrooms and food please a store. Was a good little way to learn so much about the country.

Google
Loved it, what a wonderful piece of art, that Is amazing, every zone has its own beauty, moreover nothing is less but plane ✈️ experience inside it is out standing, a must go place to bring you child here. There is also a shall canteen to have some light snacks and a souvenir shop is also there to bring some gifts. Overall a wonderful experience, but remember you must spare enough time to go there because it needs almost half day to complete it properly if you are a detail lover.

You can see the small Netherlands here. It’s really pretty. It is 25 euro per person. There are also attractions inside. Be aware of the sea eagle they will grab your food.

Google
A charming miniature park that’s great for families with kids. This is a large-scale miniature theme park. While the entrance fee is on the higher side, the overall atmosphere and maintenance are quite good. The park area isn’t very big, but it’s packed with detailed and well-made exhibits. Our child especially enjoyed the small interactive games scattered throughout the park. One highlight was the movie journey inside a real airplane — a creative touch that shows the thoughtfulness behind the park’s design. The children’s playground was also a hit, offering a fun space for kids to burn off some energy. Overall, we highly recommend this park for families with children. It’s an enjoyable and well-kept attraction that’s definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
So fun and enjoyable! Lot to learn about The Netherlands and many games that are interactive.

Yelp
This is a perfect place for families with kids as everyone will be amazed by the miniature city. Parents will obsess over the strange rich guy who had to copy everything in miniature. But really this silly place was fun even for people not accompanied by kids. We didn't watch any of their demonstrations or use their interactive games, but we still enjoyed our visit. It's a must see at least once...after you try the Kuekenhof.

Yelp
I lived practically next door to here for years, but never ventured in, probably due to the masses of bussed-in school children and large crowds. I took advantage of the thinner crowds (due to COVID) and a weekday to finally explore the park. It's not huge, but this is an advantage - you don't get bored or exhausted visiting. The miniature highlights of the Netherlands are really impressive and really do provide an encapsulation of the country in a small package. Admission prices aren't exactly cheap but it's a good experience to try once. Many of the exhibits are interactive and provide some historical perspective as well.

Yelp
Such a fun family place. Super cool to know the miniature buildings are actual buildings around Holland. Perfect family adventure.

Yelp
Madurodam is so fun. Young and old will enjoy this park. It is beautiful to look at all the very realistic to scale buildings. Highly recommend this park.

Yelp
Too good. A lovely day out for tourists and locals alike. Madurodam is great for kids and adults and is where you'll earn something (or many things) new about The Netherlands. This theme park in The Hague has many miniature representations of The Netherlands' most famous buildings and industries (e.g., flowers, harbors). In recent years it has modernized with regular multi-media presentations and short TV bits throughout the park that are activated with a personalized card handed out on entry. Buildings: many famous ones both old and modern, but also lots of obscure ones. There's no point in stopping at every display. You'll get the gist just "browsing". Things that move: trains, boats, quirky slipping miniature cars, coastal engineering works. Too many to mention and mostly very well done. T Stuff to Do: there's a lot to keep old and young occupied and interested, including (un)loading container ships, putting out fires, bidding on flowers, "flying a plane", and much more. The Hansje Brinker leaking wall is great fun on hot days. multi-media displays: mostly excellent and original. We liked the one about the fight against water and 80-yr war against Spanish. The one on New Amsterdam / York was less interesting. The presentation on the 1988 European Football championship was also great. Disappointing: - The DJ table sounded fun but was taken off the grid (not off the map though). - The video displays in the park did not all work. - Visitors receive a card to activate some of the activities. We made the effort to register our email address -as offered-, but then never received an email with photos/videos - as promised. Final notes: - nice cafe w a good view - two great kids play areas

Yelp
When I was a kid, a long long time ago, we would come here and I was in heaven for hours and hours. The miniature houses and the surprises around every corner were a fairytale come true: the bulb fields smelled like hyacinths and the organ grinder worked harder than the real ones one would occasionally see in the neighboring town's market square. Now, returning to find a respite from a busy schedule, the trip down memory lane was marred by the sense that this place no longer exists to support a gentle charity - it does - but the magic is now far more commercial than ever before. Is that progress?

Yelp
Between Keukenhof and Madurodam, I chose Madurodam. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to see a theme park based on miniatures. Madurodam did an excellent job in creating a world of miniatures. We spent about five hours in the park. There is just so much to see if you are really interested in the details. If you don't have time to stroll, you could do a condensed tour of the park which highlights key monuments and points of history. I recommend carving time out in your schedule to spend the day here. If you go during peak season, the park will be crowded and the place will be buzzing with children and families. Madurodam is a park that is just as entertaining for adults as it is for children. The funny thing is that it was the adults that I saw crossing the line of do not cross and do not touch by stepping into the miniatures to take pictures. Don't do that people! That is how things get broken. It is easy to get distracted at Madurodam as the park has many interactive kiosks. Upon entrance you are given a card that enables you to watch videos and participate in activities. Be a dj, fly through Amsterdam, and get your picture taken. It will all be emailed to you. The videos are funny and educational explaining the history of The Netherlands. This is a great place to learn about the culture of the country. The food is pretty good in the cafeteria and the gift shop is well stocked with Miffy items. Madurodam can be a little overwhelming but in short, it is an amazing place and often overlooked.

Yelp
Miniature replica of The Netherlands. Place is expansive with 100+ stops. Location: Easily accessed from either train station (Den Hague HS or Centraal) by tram 9. Key card given upon ticket purchase & used to activate exhibits. Allocate 1.5 hours for transit time. Super kid friendly - many interactive exhibits (ex. weight scale that gives weight in cheese wheels). Also, has moving planes (mini Schipol airport) and trains (throughout park). Good educational experience too! Staff: Extremely helpful and friendly. Actually took extra time to give me bus route directions to downtown. Impossible to cover all of the exhibits in depth unless you allocate a full day. They have a short (1 hour) route, but it took me 2x longer to complete because I wanted to read. Bottom Line: Ideal for kids! Visit if you have extra 4+ hours in The Hague. Transit from downtown takes time and could easily spend hours here.

Yelp
I wish every country had one of these! Don't have time to visit every city in The Netherlands, no problem, they're all here. This miniature park includes most of the country's landmarks and it's got plenty of activities to keep the kids busy. This place is kept really nice and clean. Every tree, flower, walkway, mini building, and water vessel is kept in tip top shape. There are plenty of plaques that describe what you're looking at so it's pretty easy to follow. This is a great place for pictures! The restrooms, eating locations, and shop are all kept real nice and clean. The employees are friendly, and the bus and tram stop right in front of the park so it's easy to get to. Highly recommended!

Yelp
This was a great place to visit, but not worth planning a stop around. I loved the opportunity to learn more about Holland in an interesting way. Interactive learning is much better than boring museum tours! I loved the giant tulips and the cheese activities. The cafe has decently priced food as well, which was nice when going in to warm up.

Yelp
It was pretty good and very fun, but the only complaint I have about it is that many exhibits weren't working and ate up the coins we put into get them to work.

Yelp
Compared to Amsterdam, the Tourist sites in Den Haag are a little staid. At least nothing compares to an adventure I had in Amsterdam a few years ago, when a work colleague gave our group a walking tour of the Red Light District (with perhaps a little too much inside knowledge). But there's a lot to like about Den Haag, and one place on your Tourist list should be the Madurodam (in the Scheveningen District). It is a model of a Dutch town on a 1:25 scale, composed of typical Dutch buildings and landmarks, as are found at various locations in the country. This major Dutch tourist attraction was built in 1952 and has been visited by tens of millions of visitors since then (including me). The miniature city was named after George Maduro, a law student from Curaçao who fought the Nazi occupation forces as a member of the Dutch resistance and died at Dachau concentration camp in 1945. His parents donated the capital to start the Madurodam project. On July 2, 1952, the then teenage princess Beatrix was appointed mayor of Madurodam, after which she was given a tour of her town. When Beatrix became queen of the Netherlands, she relinquished this function. Today, the mayor of Madurodam is elected by a youth municipal council consisting of 25 pupils from schools in the region. The detail in these models is pretty impressive and probably requires 4-5 hours to do this place the justice it deserves. You can also walk around again and again, and your eyes will always be surprised with something new. And after I was done, I wanted to hop a train and visit some of these places!

Yelp
I think if you had kids (most people here did) it's probably great. But for two adults, it was just ok. I think if you went here as a child, it might be more special. It was fun seeing the buildings we'd toured around the Netherlands here- and one place, Muiderslot castle, we saw later in the day (the real thing) so that was interesting. But we spent 45 minutes here and had had enough. We hate Disneyland, though, so we are not theme park people- and ultimately this is a theme park. The kids loved it. Lots of charming picture opportunities (with Miffy, in a field of giant tulips, in a wooden shoe, etc). There are interactive toys for the kids (you can shoot a water cannon on a ship, for example)- so I really do think it's mostly for kids, and people with kids.

Yelp
This is such a fun place to visit. I have come here since I was a child. Its gone under some renovations during that time, but they have only improved the experience. Its a "miniature park". A park full of miniatures. Want to see Schiphol? Learn about it? You can see it here. The Hague in miniature? Its here, building reconstructed here for your viewing. Even the cars (miniatures) are driving around. This is now an interactive park, it used to be more of a "walk through and see" place. But now you go in and can open a dam, or buy flowers at the flower market etc. Making it interactive has also increased visitors, so be prepared, especially if you are there during peak tourist times. If you are travelling in the Netherlands, stop by and visit this place. Its worth it.

Yelp
Wish we had places like this in America! The detail, effort and skill that it took to create this place is insane. I came as a child and revisited 20 years later. Still just as magical and astounding. You get to see all of Holland in one afternoon! Wonderful for both children and adults.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my visit to Madurodam! It made me want to see a bunch of the sites in person. I will have plenty of trips to make this summer. It is terrific to be able to see all the different places and events that happen in one place. They even add scenes to the models based on the time of the year! I went in December so there was the arrival of Sinterklaas and his Zwarte Pietsen plus Christmas trees with lights in the models. Fun! There are educational videos you can watch at stations around the park. The card you receive as you enter will remember your language preference as you move to the new stations. It was entertaining for me and I am sure Madurodam will be fun for my brother and his family to visit as well. I'll be back with them this summer!

Yelp
This place is so neat. My kid loved playing the games throughout the park and I loved learning all about Holland from a giant's vantage point. You can learn your weight in wheels of cheese, buy a tulip pin cranked out from a miniature tulip farm processing plant, move little boats down a little canal, watch planes taxi at the airport-all sorts of stuff. It's pure kid fun for kids of all ages. There is a tram line that stops right in front of the Madurodam.

Brooke H.

Yelp
My 8&10 year olds enjoyed this a bunch. It's an amazing tiny Netherlands display. Most outside so try to get there on dry day.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm nearly forty and I'm pretty sure I've been coming here every decade since I was four. I keep coming back so there must be something to it. It's a great way to introduce tourists to holland. I'm consistently impressed with the attention to detail here. From the ornate cathedrals, to the NS trains that zoom by through the park, to the ships and ferries riding alongside the massive (non-museum) canal-fish (who are huge and seem very hungry) - there is something for everyone here. A great way to spend an hour or two and not too expensive.
google avatar

Yelp
A miniature model of Holland! What is not to love?! I am so glad a woman on my flight from Philadelphia, USA to Amsterdam told me about Madurodam! I don't know how you can visit the Netherlands and not stop at Madurodam! Walking around Madurodam was nice to spend a afternoon looking at the displays. Plus, Madurodam is not too far from the city limits of Den Haag or The Hague for my fellow Americans. It is the perfect bike riding distance from the city limits. Despite going in the middle of the summer the crowds were not too bad which was nice. I got to learn all about the Netherlands in one place which was awesome. As far as I'm concerned every country/ state in the USA should have something like Madurodam.

Yelp
I first came to Madurodam as a child growing up in Europe with frequent trips to Holland, where I was born and most of my family lives. I have vague yet happy memories here. Flash forward some 35 years later and I've come back here twice with my own son: once when he was almost 3 and again a few weeks ago. He's now 4 and a half. He had a great experience both times but he clearly was much more enthralled with the miniature world that is Madurodam this last trip. He also spent quite a bit of time playing on the pirate ship in the sandy area of the park. As others have said, what's not to love about this place? Your kid can run around, have a blast, and it's always fun even for adults to get a different perspective on the world around you. There's a certain voyeuristic meme in the fact that one is visiting a miniature Holland while visiting Holland. My immediate thought, certainly not particularly eloquent, was "Where's mini-me?" All my random pseudo-intellectual ramblings aside, I'd recommend Madurodam to any family visiting Holland with a child between the ages of 3 and 10. They will enjoy it and you will enjoy it too!
google avatar

Paul B.

Yelp
Better than Legoland (no rides though). Well maintained and lots of fun for the family. I first visited as a boy in the late '70's and now again with my kids. It may be another 30 years till I come again but I look forward to it.
google avatar

Yelp
I'd encourage anyone who is visiting the Amsterdam area to check out Madurodam. Although the place seems like it's mainly geared towards children, we saw people of all ages there. The place is a miniature reconstruction of Amsterdam and contains a lot of different ways you can interact with the mini buildings. It's surprisingly big and we ended up spending a few hours looking at all the scenery and the watching the hilarious Dutch videos. The coolest part was the DJ section where you can actually record and play a dance mix, and they have a small crowd of figurines dance along with your music. Pretty enjoyable. My only complaint is that some of the interactive exhibits weren't working 100% correctly.

Yelp
A must visit when in the Hauge! Miniatyre of many of the greatest historical & impressive buildings in the Netherlands. In combination with new and important areas for the industry. Many interactive things for kids, playground and cafe! Fun football park with thr orange success history :-)

Yelp
Madurodam is a wonderful miniature version of Holland. If you have ever dreamed of being a giant then this is the place for you! I've visited this place twice, once as a child, and once as an adult. (It seemed a lot smaller the second time around). Madurodam is less of a model village and more of a model country. As well as the traditional houses, castles and of course windmills, there is a model clog factory (where you can get a pair of tiny ceramic clogs to take home), a model football stadium, a model train station and hundreds of other beautifully crafted miniatures. There is of course a gift shop which sells models, including paper windmills of various designs which I had great fun making when we returned to England. It sounds like a terrible cliché but Madurodam really is a great day out for young and old! If you thought Holland was small, you ain't seen nothing yet!

Qype User (pipsqu…)

Yelp
Madurodam is a miniaturised version of the Netherlands. I didn't have very high expectation when I visited (I've seen a few not very interesting model villages in the past), but I really did think it was great. One of the first things you see when you enter is a small waterway where there is an oil tanker going on fire then getting put out by a fire fighting ship. Once I saw this I realised it wasn't going to be a bit more unusual than the typical model village. There are representation of all the typically Dutch things you would expect, like windmills, flat farmland and traditional houses. There are models of the centres of Amsterdam (complete with working canal tour boat), Utrecht and the parliament buildings in the Hague. Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport is also recreated, complete with moving planes. Close to there is a Mars factory where you can enter a coin and a little truck comes out with a miniature mars bar for you. It's easily reached by tram from train station in the Hague and although admission is not not cheap I feel that it is worth it.

Qype User (jool…)

Yelp
Situated a short tram ride form the Hague, this is a theme park with a difference. A world within a world, it's the Netherlands in miniature. Madurodam was opened on 2 July 1952. It was established as a war monument and as a charity foundation. The park is named after a Dutch war hero, George Maduro, who died in Dachau in 1945. Instead of a permanent memorial, his parents, with the help of a local benefactor, Mrs B. Boon-van der Starp, built a miniature city depicting life from all over the Netherlands. My 6 year old loved it. There are models of working Dutch ports, cities, canals, roads and the highlight for me, Amsterdam's Schipol Airport, complete with taxiing planes and baggage conveyors. There is a restaurant on site which was good value and much needed when we visited in April so we could thaw out. Overall, a great day out but hope for good weather! Admission prices (2008): Adults: EUR 13.75 Children 3 to 11 years: EUR 9.75 65+: EUR 12.75

Yelp
What a treat this is! A theme park featuring most of Holland's unique buildings and landmarks in miniature. Amsterdam's Dam Square, Rotterdam's port and harbor, Utrecht's Dom Tower, Palais Het Loo, etc...with so much attention to detail. And things move.. It's like being inside the world's biggest train set. Lots of trains, cars on freeways, windmills turning, boats cruising in the water, bridges going up and down and our favorite, KLM planes taxiing down runways at the mini- Schiphol Airport. And it's very interactive and hands-on: plenty of buttons for children to push, levers to pull, vehicles to control. Two things to skip. You receive a card in the beginning to activate some interactive exhibits, but it took forever to set up on their computer system and they want all your info like email address, etc....not needed for a good time. And the food is embarrassingly awful and shamefully overpriced. Disneyland food and service is 3 star Michelin compared to here. Skip it and enjoy a nice lunch in nearby Den Haag or Scheveningen. The park is very easy to get to by public transport. Train to Den Haag HS and an easy tram stop to the front of the park. About an hour from Amsterdam Centraal Station. Watch our video here: https://youtu.be/ofGXKSCbtpU

Yelp
I have always wanted to feel -- as the Dutch must feel every day -- tall. The Madurodam did not fail me. Miniatures of buildings I had already seen at full scale were the most interesting for me; therefore, if you are a tourist, I might recommend visiting the Madurodam at the tail end of your trip, when more of the landmarks are likely to be familiar. Go pre-armed with a few 10 cent coins, so you can have the thrill of animating the miniatures on command: not to be missed is the miniature chocolate factory that will deliver, on miniature truck, a small candy to you.

Yelp
This is a must see if you are visiting Holland for the first time, great fun for the whole family. It was a few years ago since I have visited but in my time here I have been at least 3 times and each time it has been interesting to see how they have put everything together they are always adding new things.

Hui L.

Yelp
The park is small but full of fun! You can use the entry card to active the interactive video on each scene. The cafe is good. My son likes the pasta and fries.

Yelp
It is easy to see why this is perfect for children. At 1:25 scale model even the largest cathedral is brought down to their level. Never mind that a four year old is really not interested in knowing that Church Westerkerk is the largest Renaissance in Amsterdam. Many exhibits have something that will move or make a noise for the insertion of a coin in a box at the child's level. Each exhibit has a card with the nomenclature ... Why they could not also number them to match the program guide is a mystery as I fumbled to find the description. The scale models are amazing depictions of the real thing though do not look too closely as it is obvious there's delayed maintenance with missing times. At one time the scale models that move would have been state of the art; alas technology has moved along leaving these behind at the model railroad level. There are surrounding restaurants in the park that have decent food at reasonable prices. All in all a decent experience worth the history lesson in 3D.
