I'm not a fan of casinos, but when one helps revive a declining historic downtown, I'm all for that. Maggie's Bar & Grill is part of why I'm grateful to Isle of Capri in Boonville.
Mom and I were looking for a quick place for a bite to eat before heading home to KC, and there was no way I was settling for a chain near the highway. Maggie's displayed a Boulevard sign and looked busy on a Tuesday night in this small town, so in we went.
What a delightful little place! Our waiter was a complete sweetheart and happy to hear that some big-city (?) folk had come in. I ordered me a Boulevard Wheat and Mom marveled at "how much better a martini tastes when you're out, than at home." Maybe because they use Bombay instead of the stuff she gets at Walmart. Just sayin', Ma.
I decided on fish tacos because they're grilled, not fried, then saw sweet potato fries...so much for eating healthy. Both were delish, including the locally made barbecue sauce he brought me for the fries. Mom got a reuben that was huge and very tasty-looking.
Boonville is a lovely old town, and Maggie's building is no exception-exposed brick walls, beautiful bar back and woodwork...and hundreds of dollar bills stuck to the ceiling with push pins! I asked our waiter how they got there. He explained how it's done and confirmed my suspicion that it usually involves large amounts of alcohol. The vibe here is very relaxed and friendly, and backed up with a marvelous blues soundtrack in the background. I predict Maggie's will be a regular stop whenever I return to God's Country!
