T+L's Hotel Review of Mahali Mzuri Safari Camp in Kenya

"Reopened in June 2025 after a major redesign, this 12‑tent luxury safari camp perches on the side of a lush valley with sweeping views over the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, offering uninterrupted wildlife watching from private decks and communal areas. Developed as part of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Limited Edition and redesigned in collaboration with Lynne Hunt London, the camp blends contemporary African style with local Maasai craftsmanship—think custom beadwork, bronze spear finials and a warm, culturally rooted aesthetic—while emphasizing sustainability through a solar farm, rainwater harvesting, a greenhouse kitchen garden and electric vehicles. Accommodations feature floor‑to‑ceiling glass, in‑room air conditioning, oversized lounges, king beds, en‑suite bathrooms with freestanding claw‑foot tubs overlooking the plains, generous minibars stocked with African gins and Amarula, and thoughtful touches like binoculars and a French press. Dining is a highlight, with pan‑African cuisine made from locally sourced produce (including cold soups, salads, Kashmiri‑style lamb, vegetarian githeri and decadent desserts), flexible meal locations from private decks to campfire dinners, and all‑inclusive beverages and bar service. Wildlife experiences are intimate and varied thanks to private conservancy access and just five camps in the 33,000‑hectare area: twice‑daily and night drives, assigned guides for continuity, walking safaris with Maasai warrior guides, hot‑air balloon safaris with Champagne breakfasts, and frequent close encounters with elephants, giraffes, zebras and converging lion prides. Family offerings are strong (children accepted from age three, a new family tent, dedicated vehicles and child‑focused activities), while a small spa, heated infinity pool and personalized service (from candlelit balcony meals to nightly turndown touches) complete the restorative bush atmosphere. Practicalities: the camp is remote—best reached via small plane to Mara North or Olare Orok airstrips or a scenic ~5‑hour drive from Nairobi—and nightly rates start from about $3,100 per tent, typically inclusive of meals, drinks, game drives, transfers and laundry." - Jenn Rice

16 Small Luxury Hotels Around the World Worth Visiting

"The best safari lodging options out there are rarely very big, but Richard Branson's 12-tent camp in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy in southwest Kenya is so special it was voted the No. 1 hotel in Travel + Leisure's 2021 World's Best Awards. Handsome interiors that combine chocolate leather, striking artworks, clawfoot tubs, and plenty of outdoor spaces elevate the glamping experience. Plus, a fabulous culinary program (featuring locally sourced ingredients and fine wines) guarantees high-quality dining even in the most remote corners of the bush." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Safari Lodges in Africa: World's Best in 2021

"The 12-suite Mahali Mzuri sits on the edge of a lush bowl, and there's not a bad seat in the house: over breakfast, you can watch monkeys scrabble in the trees and grass; from the pool you'll spot giraffes wandering through to snack on the acacias; sitting on your private terrace you may catch a glimpse of a cat stopping to drink from the rocky stream that runs through. And the property's location is ideal for maximizing both wildlife spotting and privacy. It's set within the private, 33,000-acre Olare Motorogi Conservancy, which is part of the Masai Mara ecosystem but beyond the bounds of the national park. That means all the richness of big game, but no other cars in sight—you can get within feet of a lion pride and have the moment all to yourself, with no jockeying for position or tuning out the chatter of other safari-goers. "Mahali Mzuri is the best luxurious camp to visit on the African continent," declared one reader; "just perfect," wrote another. The team is small and familial, with the kind of warm, relaxed — yet flawless — service that gives guests the easy sense of being among friends; the guides are among the best in the business, many having worked at the property for years to develop intimate knowledge of the land and its wildlife." - Travel + Leisure Editors

How to Tell if a Hotel Is Actually Sustainable or Ecofriendly - AFAR

"A 12-tent photographic safari camp on the Olare Motorogi Conservancy that operates through a partnership with Maasai landowners, ensuring local families receive stable income and protecting the area from overtourism; the camp hires staff from surrounding communities and helps support a nearby primary school funded by local businesses and guest donations." - Jennifer Flowers

Our stay at Mahali Mzuri was exceptional in every way. The lodge has a wonderful family atmosphere that immediately makes you feel welcome and cared for. The team goes above and beyond to create a warm, home-like environment while still maintaining the highest standards of comfort and service. One of the absolute highlights of our visit was our safari guide, Betty. Her knowledge, professionalism, and incredible spotting skills transformed each game drive into an unforgettable adventure. Betty not only showed us an amazing variety of wildlife but also took the time to explain behaviors, habitats, and conservation efforts in a way that was both fascinating and engaging. Her warmth and enthusiasm truly made our experience special. Also, special thanks to the trainee guide, Elvis, who share with us wonderful Masai stories. Mahali Mzuri offers a perfect blend of luxury, personal connection, and world-class guiding. Thanks to the entire team for making our stay so memorable. We cannot wait to return! Elena & Simona

Our one-year wedding anniversary trip to Mahali Mzuri was nothing short of magical. Beyond the breathtaking views and incredible wildlife, we were so moved by the camp's deep commitment to sustainable tourism and the well-being of the local Maasai community. This isn't just a luxury safari; it's a model for responsible travel that truly resonates with us.||From the moment we arrived, we noticed how genuinely happy and proud every employee was. It was so important to my husband and I to choose a place that values its people, and it's clear why Mahali Mzuri is the camp everyone in the community strives to work at. The fact that the entire staff is Maasai speaks volumes about their commitment to supporting and empowering the local villages.||The camp itself is stunning, with the recent renovations bringing a new level of comfort and elegance. The air conditioning was a welcome luxury (not typical for camps in the Mara), especially as we were celebrating in the heat of the day, and the heated pool was a perfect place to unwind. We also loved seeing the smaller details, from the organic garden that supplies the kitchen to the focus on reducing their environmental footprint.||The staff went above and beyond to make our anniversary special. They surprised us with a private bush dinner under the starry African sky—the Milky Way was absolutely incredible. Later, they presented us with a delicious cake and a beautiful Maasai dance to celebrate. Their generosity and thoughtfulness made our anniversary an experience we will cherish forever.||The food was exceptional, easily rivaling high-end restaurants at hotels in the States. Chef Eddie makes his breads on site and I’m impressed with his range and skill in the kitchen. And a huge thank you to Dennis for his masterful drinks, especially his espresso martinis, which were honestly better than any I've had in New York City.||Lastly, we have to highly recommend our guide, John. His knowledge of the Olare Motorogi Conservancy is phenomenal. He has a gift for anticipating animal movements and a quiet passion for wildlife that is contagious. Within 24 hours of arriving at Mahali, we had already checked off the Big 5 on our list (including a pride finishing off a water buffalo). After our incredible time with him, we moved on to another camp (Entim) in the Mara Reserve and were disappointed by the contrast in guiding quality. John truly set a standard that will be hard to beat.||Mahali Mzuri is more than a luxury getaway; it’s a place that makes a real, positive impact. We can't wait to return.

We stayed three night here and were awed the the facilities, staff, and location ||Our “tent” was spacious, clean, and afforded us front-row seats for the never-ending parade of animals the vale in front of the room.||Our twice-daily game drives allowed up-close viewing of spectacular animals: at one point I could have easily touched the mane of a lion as he strolled past. ||Staff were friendly and welcoming. We never got tired of their smiles. ||Food was wonderful in quality and quantity. ||We’re already looking to return for a longer stay.

It’s very hard to describe how special Mahali Mzuri is. From the minute you arrive to smiling faces and a traditional welcome song, you are met with an astonishing view down the valley, complete with hippos, hyenas, elephants and giraffes!||The staff were the most attentive I have ever seen. By the end of our 5 nights, we all felt like we were staying at a friend’s luxurious private safari.||The two safaris per day were nothing short of exceptional. We saw literally everything we came to see, multiple times, up close, without other vehicles most of the time. Our amazing guide, Gideon, seemed to anticipate all the animal behaviour before we even saw them, so we were always in the right place at the right time. He was so passionate and focussed, and so knowledgeable, we feel like we have a deep insight into African wildlife and local culture.||Another highlight was the local school. We had brought gifts (Mahali Mzuri send you a link to buy appropriate things) and we were met with the most inspiring principal who has worked so hard to build the school from one tin shed to a population of 400 students. This was done through donations from Mahali Mzuri guests and please consider visiting and donating yourself. The kids were so passionate about learning, the teachers so talented - lives are being utterly transformed there.||Marianne, the General Manager, runs a highly efficient and caring team and was often seen laughing and chatting with guests. She was just a joy to be around and her enthusiasm was infectious.||Finally, all the staff went out of their way to engage and entertain our 12 year old son. He even went on a game drive without us which he claims was his utmost highlight of the whole holiday.||Caroline. Ann, James, Bob, Denis - thank you and your colleagues for making us feel so special and welcome. We will be back to visit soon!
