T+L's Hotel Review of Mahali Mzuri Safari Camp in Kenya

"Reopened in June 2025 after a major redesign, this 12‑tent luxury safari camp perches on the side of a lush valley with sweeping views over the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, offering uninterrupted wildlife watching from private decks and communal areas. Developed as part of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Limited Edition and redesigned in collaboration with Lynne Hunt London, the camp blends contemporary African style with local Maasai craftsmanship—think custom beadwork, bronze spear finials and a warm, culturally rooted aesthetic—while emphasizing sustainability through a solar farm, rainwater harvesting, a greenhouse kitchen garden and electric vehicles. Accommodations feature floor‑to‑ceiling glass, in‑room air conditioning, oversized lounges, king beds, en‑suite bathrooms with freestanding claw‑foot tubs overlooking the plains, generous minibars stocked with African gins and Amarula, and thoughtful touches like binoculars and a French press. Dining is a highlight, with pan‑African cuisine made from locally sourced produce (including cold soups, salads, Kashmiri‑style lamb, vegetarian githeri and decadent desserts), flexible meal locations from private decks to campfire dinners, and all‑inclusive beverages and bar service. Wildlife experiences are intimate and varied thanks to private conservancy access and just five camps in the 33,000‑hectare area: twice‑daily and night drives, assigned guides for continuity, walking safaris with Maasai warrior guides, hot‑air balloon safaris with Champagne breakfasts, and frequent close encounters with elephants, giraffes, zebras and converging lion prides. Family offerings are strong (children accepted from age three, a new family tent, dedicated vehicles and child‑focused activities), while a small spa, heated infinity pool and personalized service (from candlelit balcony meals to nightly turndown touches) complete the restorative bush atmosphere. Practicalities: the camp is remote—best reached via small plane to Mara North or Olare Orok airstrips or a scenic ~5‑hour drive from Nairobi—and nightly rates start from about $3,100 per tent, typically inclusive of meals, drinks, game drives, transfers and laundry." - Jenn Rice

16 Small Luxury Hotels Around the World Worth Visiting

"Richard Branson's 12-tent camp in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy blends handsome interiors (chocolate leather, striking artworks, clawfoot tubs) with plenty of outdoor space to elevate the glamping experience, and a fabulous culinary program featuring locally sourced ingredients and fine wines helps explain why it was voted Travel + Leisure's No. 1 hotel in 2021." - Chadner Navarro Chadner Navarro Chadner Navarro is a writer and editor who specializes in travel, food, design, and culture. Our Readers' Favorite 10 Safari Lodges in Africa in 2021

"Owned by Richard Branson, Mahali Mzuri's 12 suites sit on the edge of a lush bowl where, over breakfast, you can watch monkeys scrabble in the trees; from the pool you'll spot giraffes snacking on acacias; and from your private terrace you may glimpse a cat drinking from the rocky stream that runs through. Set within the private, 33,000-acre Olare Motorogi Conservancy—part of the Masai Mara ecosystem but outside the national park—the location offers rich big-game viewing with total privacy (no other cars in sight), so you can get within feet of a lion pride. The small, familial team provides warm, relaxed yet flawless service, and long-standing guides bring intimate knowledge of the land; readers called it "the best luxurious camp" and "just perfect," and noted that the hospitality "resembles its name"—Mahali Mzuri, "the Beautiful Place." - Lila Harron Battis Lila Harron Battis Lila Harron Battis is a writer and editor. How to Tell if a Hotel Is Actually Sustainable or Ecofriendly - AFAR

"A 12-tent photographic safari camp on the Olare Motorogi Conservancy that operates through a partnership with Maasai landowners, ensuring local families receive stable income and protecting the area from overtourism; the camp hires staff from surrounding communities and helps support a nearby primary school funded by local businesses and guest donations." - Jennifer Flowers

First of all, what an amazing boutique hotel experience! From the staff , the perfectly appointed 12 tents, and the customized food options, this place hits it out of the park!!!|I traveled with family and we had two kids (10-13). They made sure everyone was happy at meal time. Shout out to Bob for always checking in on us and helping the dinning process go smoothly. |The beautiful tucked away infinity pool was stunning and had access to a mini bar to help yourself. The view from the pool is breathtaking. Frankly the view from the whole property is incredible. It’s a very well appointed location that beats out other camps in the area by far!|The newly upgraded rooms are exactly what you would expect from a 5* property. |We traveled with a private safari company called Micato. This company went above and beyond to make our experience perfect.|Our game drivers Levi and Newton were the best on our whole trip. Levi was funny and well educated on all things Mara related. He found us a leopard on our first game drive, got to see lion cubs during cocktails out in the bush and checked so many animal boxes in just 3 nights. |We are so grateful to have spent our time at this beautiful property with such amazing staff. Thank you for making our trip to East Africa so special.

Our stay at Mahali Mzuri was exceptional in every way. The lodge has a wonderful family atmosphere that immediately makes you feel welcome and cared for. The team goes above and beyond to create a warm, home-like environment while still maintaining the highest standards of comfort and service. One of the absolute highlights of our visit was our safari guide, Betty. Her knowledge, professionalism, and incredible spotting skills transformed each game drive into an unforgettable adventure. Betty not only showed us an amazing variety of wildlife but also took the time to explain behaviors, habitats, and conservation efforts in a way that was both fascinating and engaging. Her warmth and enthusiasm truly made our experience special. Also, special thanks to the trainee guide, Elvis, who share with us wonderful Masai stories. Mahali Mzuri offers a perfect blend of luxury, personal connection, and world-class guiding. Thanks to the entire team for making our stay so memorable. We cannot wait to return! Elena & Simona

I enjoy safaris and have been on many across countries and geographies. Mahali Mzuri rates among my top five. From our amazing welcome at the airstrip till the very last drive, this was an unforgettable holiday. The resort is of exceptional quality and on the whole the food and drink are good. The drives were exceptional not just with what we saw but also the quality of the rangers. Their knowledge, skill, efforts and friendliness. Nature cannot be turned on and off like a rap so we didnt expect every game drive to be brilliant but in fact, each drive had something memorable and or extraordinary. Even our last drive, which was almost dull, suddenly perked up only because of the persistence of our guides who gave us an amazing leopard sighting as a goodbye gift. I'm returning for sure.

Words cannot describe how wonderful our experience was here. Every time I tell people about it and our time here, I get happy tears in my eyes! My Husband and I visited for 5 nights in August to celebrate his 40th birthday. Everything about it is truly magical. The camp is located in a perfect position where you can see elephants from your room, watch hippos in the valley at lunchtime and if you are lucky enough like we were, see a pride of lions, including cubs on the hill located just behind the camp. We also saw giraffes from our room walking along the hill opposite along with many other animals. The place is just breathtaking. We did not want to leave, saying goodbye to everyone was emotional.|All of the staff are the most hospitable, passionate and friendly group of people that we have had the pleasure of meeting, they make you feel so welcome all of the time. They are absolutely incredible. We did not want for anything and nothing was too much trouble. |We were met by Gideon, who was our guide for the visit and he was so knowledgeable and such a nice person. When we arrived at the camp, we were greeted by so many members of staff, it was really special. |Our personal host and waitress was Joy. She was an absolute joy and a delight, a truly exceptional lady. We cannot give her enough praise, she is a total credit to this place, such a nice person and an amazing host and waitress, who was there for every drink and meal. |Every need was met, admittedly as it should be for a high end resort, but this is not always the case from previous experience. The business model here is spot on, everything works in harmony with every detail covered as you would expect. The rooms or not just a tent either. Yes there is canvas present but they are luxurious and with all the fixtures, fittings and amenities. It is a tent on steroids! It has an incredible balcony also. |I have wanted to stay at this camp since I read about it opening and I was not disappointed. This is our first safari and as such we do not have anything to compare it to but I can't imagine anywhere else being able to deliver anything better. It has everything covered, every little detail thought about and met perfectly and seemless.|The game drives were breathtaking and magical, we saw everything, thanks to Gideon and his determination and knowledge. You do not need a long lens when you stay here, we were so close to everything. |The food is incredible and you never get the chance to be hungry. The head chef Peter is a wonderful chef and person. He came out at virtually every meal to talk to us and ask us about the food. Everybody was just so lovely to talk to.|I could review this place for hours. We do not have a bad or negative word to say about it. I read lots of reviews before I visited and now I can understand why everyone seemed so in love with this place and the people here. We were made to feel so special. Mahali Mzuri and all the staff will hold a special place in our hearts forever, we love you. Thank you for making our visit so utterly incredible xxx

Mahali Mzuri is absolutely stunning—set right in the heart of the Maasai Mara with gorgeous, newly redecorated rooms that feel both luxurious and connected to nature. The safaris were incredible, with breathtaking wildlife encounters every day and knowledgeable, friendly guides who made each drive unforgettable.||Service throughout the camp was excellent—warm, attentive, and polished. That said, coming directly from another safari lodge (with some of the best service I've ever had), we did notice it wasn’t quite at the same ultra-personal level. The safari vehicles were comfortable, though not quite as plush as the other safari lodge. ||Notable staff include our safari guide/driver (Gideon) who is excellent and our server (Joy) ... they exemplified outstanding service||Overall, Mahali Mzuri delivers a world-class safari experience in a spectacular setting—beautiful design, great food, and outstanding game viewing.

Stunning. It was quiet and natural and felt one with the environment. The view of the wildlife from our room and spectacular balcony was amazing. The wines were terrific, and the staff was wonderful. We actually loved the armed escorts to and from our room after nightfall too for some reason. I guess it was exciting knowing there was danger, but that we were perfectly safe

Quite simply the greatest thing I have ever experienced in my life. The property is just magical. The staff and service are out of this world. The game drives are breathtaking, and the guides will teach you so much about the animals and ecosystem. I cannot thank the staff enough for delivering such an experience which doesn't even feel real. Utterly exemplary.

Our one-year wedding anniversary trip to Mahali Mzuri was nothing short of magical. Beyond the breathtaking views and incredible wildlife, we were so moved by the camp's deep commitment to sustainable tourism and the well-being of the local Maasai community. This isn't just a luxury safari; it's a model for responsible travel that truly resonates with us.||From the moment we arrived, we noticed how genuinely happy and proud every employee was. It was so important to my husband and I to choose a place that values its people, and it's clear why Mahali Mzuri is the camp everyone in the community strives to work at. The fact that the entire staff is Maasai speaks volumes about their commitment to supporting and empowering the local villages.||The camp itself is stunning, with the recent renovations bringing a new level of comfort and elegance. The air conditioning was a welcome luxury (not typical for camps in the Mara), especially as we were celebrating in the heat of the day, and the heated pool was a perfect place to unwind. We also loved seeing the smaller details, from the organic garden that supplies the kitchen to the focus on reducing their environmental footprint.||The staff went above and beyond to make our anniversary special. They surprised us with a private bush dinner under the starry African sky—the Milky Way was absolutely incredible. Later, they presented us with a delicious cake and a beautiful Maasai dance to celebrate. Their generosity and thoughtfulness made our anniversary an experience we will cherish forever.||The food was exceptional, easily rivaling high-end restaurants at hotels in the States. Chef Eddie makes his breads on site and I’m impressed with his range and skill in the kitchen. And a huge thank you to Dennis for his masterful drinks, especially his espresso martinis, which were honestly better than any I've had in New York City.||Lastly, we have to highly recommend our guide, John. His knowledge of the Olare Motorogi Conservancy is phenomenal. He has a gift for anticipating animal movements and a quiet passion for wildlife that is contagious. Within 24 hours of arriving at Mahali, we had already checked off the Big 5 on our list (including a pride finishing off a water buffalo). After our incredible time with him, we moved on to another camp (Entim) in the Mara Reserve and were disappointed by the contrast in guiding quality. John truly set a standard that will be hard to beat.||Mahali Mzuri is more than a luxury getaway; it’s a place that makes a real, positive impact. We can't wait to return.
