13 Best Spring Break Ideas for Families

"The midcentury modern-inspired property is steps away from Waikiki Beach, so you won’t be far from great restaurants, but don’t miss the hotel’s on-site dining venue, Mahina and Sun’s, which offers superb farm-to-table fare (including some kid-friendly options)." - Travel + Leisure Editors

"Superstar chef Ed Kenney tucked his fourth restaurant inside the Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club, a funky Waikiki outpost that pays homage to the area's 1960s scene. The eatery sits beside the pool, where period films screen (sometimes against a background of live music or a DJ spinning albums). The vibe hits all the right notes, from the Hawaii Potters' Guild bowls to the custom Tori Richard fabrics for the banquette cushions. Kenney—a four-time James Beard Award semifinalist—serves elevated home cooking that draws upon the best of local farms as well as sustainably caught seafood. Fan favorites include a tangle of bright veggies topped with perfectly charred he'e (octopus) and deep-fried avocado on tacos with smoked yogurt, shishito peppers, and pickled red onion."

Everything was going well. We had a nice smoked ahi & oysters for starters, steak and pork chop for the mains, and a beautiful cocktails. We had a reservation for 2 - for our anniversary, which they honored & gave us a quiet spot (one of the round tables in the corner). I also advanced order a dessert to surprise my husband w/ a greeting if they do that. So, comes the dessert. The server offered 3 items as Anniversary dessert (not explained but was charged half the price). From their menu it looks like the Banana Pudding was most popular so we got that. We waited for about 10 minutes for this - mind you we’re already done, table is clean, and is waiting for the check. There were 5-6 tables being served and less busy than we arrived. Comes the banana pudding on a ramekin, with a candle (as requested), served by the host, not the server. Our excitement slowly fades when we realize this might be a joke. It’s not a pudding after all. Someone decided to slice a banana, top off with whip, & sprinkles cookie crunch. Literally chopped bananas!! My husband and I laugh about it. Maybe someone was tripping, but sorry if that’s the quality that you advertised, you need to set expectation better. Maybe call it fruit bowl with whip & cookie crunch.

We really like this restaurant—it has great vibes, a cute pool, and excellent service. The food comes in large portions and is nicely cooked. The chicken, in particular, is tender and flavorful. It’s also in a great location, within walking distance of the main street. They host lunch parties on Saturdays and often have live music with talented singers performing great songs.

Google
Hated to be cut the rating but three of our fairly large party got sick hours after eating here. Which is a shame since most of the dishes were fine! My nephew enjoyed the pizza the most. The hostess and the waitress were great, providing us with tons of service. Most of us had the raw oysters, and most of us did not get sick, but the oysters were flown in from Washington State so it's not local. I suspect that we were sitting in the hotel lobby which had an indoor pool, which at dinner was a nice touch since it provided us with a semblance of someone's backyard patio.

Google
Great vibe. We sat where we could see the hotel pool and hear the live music. The staff was friendly, but I think they were short staffed. The restaurant host said she was just filling in and didn’t know how to do things. She also became our server for drinks and appetizers. And she kept telling us she was not a server and she didn’t have her glasses so we couldn’t point to items. When asked about the fish of the day, she clearly had the spiel memorized and had to say it in a specific order. When my mom asked her what type of fish it was, she said hold on and continued her spiel about the preparation before she could get to the end where she finally mentioned it was a white flaky fish. The drinks were hit and miss. Half of them were really good and half were poorly made. I enjoyed the Brazilian limeade. The appetizers fried pickles and crab hush puppies were good. The chickpea fritters were mid. The pizza was really crispy and a little spicy. The fresh pastas were good, but the sauces could have used more flavor. The bartender took our entree order and the non-host, non-server delivered the food and said “well I didn’t take the order” when someone’s food was not delivered. Overall, not a great experience.

Google
Tuesday night, but place had people and live great live music! A little bit aways from main Waikiki so feels very hole in the wall. INCREDIBLE food. We had the oysters, off the hook, seared ahi, and banana pudding, as well as the Escape and Mango #5 (ha!) from their cocktail menu. Our server was very attentive and we were never waiting long on anything, and atmosphere was impeccable. Already planning on my return.

Google
Update: I recently returned and the food and service are still on point. Checked this place out for restaurant week. This is a chill location to grab a bite to eat and enjoy some tasty drinks. They make their own lilikoi syrup as well. The ambience and customer service are on point but the food and drinks will have you coming back. The validate for 4 hrs of parking in Hyatt Centric.

Google
Honestly this place was amazing. My partner and I wanted a nice but not too fancy dinner for our last night in Hawaii and this place was exactly that. We went on a Monday night with no reservations and were seated promptly. We got the Green Goddess and some fries to start, and I had the Off the Hook (swordfish) and my partner had the hand made cavatelli. All were great, but particularly recommend the Green Goddess and Off the Hook combo — I’m not usually a big fish entree person, but I really enjoyed it.

Google
Mahina & Suns was the last dinner reservation I made during my time in Honolulu. I chose the restaurant because of its name and authentic cuisine. It was worth the visit and my server Allison was the BEST! Originally from Hawaii, Allison was able to share in depth about the culture, the food and that was a plus on top of what was already exceptional service. I got the family feast and it was worth it! I was even surprised with coconut sorbet as we sang happy birthday to me! Whenever I make it back to Hawaii I’ll be at Mahina & Suns and I hope Allison is there too.

Yelp
My family is the biggest Obama fan so we couldn't have passed up the opportunity to dine at Mahina & Sun's during our stay at the Surfjack. Everything was delicious. We especially liked the fresh tuna and octopus dishes. My dad ordered the barrel aged Negroni drink which allegedly was what Obama had. We really enjoyed the vibe here. Not only did we get to dine at the convenience of the hotel lobby, they also had rotating artists performing music everyday. The wait staff were super friendly. Hotel guests get 15% off the total bill. In addition if you book your stay at the right time, you could also get $100 restaurant credit with 5+ nights of stay!

Yelp
While looking for a good place to eat in Waikiki, we came across this gem that happens to be part of a boutique hotel. The restaurant is indoor/outdoor and is adjacent to the hotel pool. We had no trouble getting reservations, but don't let that fool you. The cocktails are unique and beautiful. The food offerings are just as great. There were so many delicious sounding options to choose from, we couldn't decide, but had our eyes on the whole fried fish. The food was delicious, the service was impeccable and friendly, and they had a habanero hot sauce. That was the only spicy touch we could find on the island. We enjoyed this restaurant so much. We decided to come back the next day for dinner again.

Yelp
No crowd on a Sunday at 7pm. On a mission to try the feast of deep fried whole fish (snapper) with sides. The feast is $37 per person PLUS the cost of the fish- $48 for our 2 person fishy (so $74 +48). It was a good size fish and a generous amt of sides that we couldn't finish. We did conquer the fish- fried crispy with 3 dipping sauces. Fish was fresh, but definitely needed sauce, soy sauce for us locals. The sides are local inspired namasu, veggies, taro and sweet potato. Sides are fresh crisp and very lightly seasoned, refreshing but almost flavorless. Taro and potatoes have a nice crisp exterior drizzled with spicy sauce. The brown rice made this a relatively healthy meal, to me anyway. But the standout dish was the A'u crudo- slices of sashimi in a delicious smoky, citrusy sauce. Banana pudding was also delicious, cold creamy and nicely sweet. Next visit will be for pupus and drinks from the extensive drink menu. Service is fast, friendly and knowledgeable. Restaurant is cashless.

Yelp
Mahina & Sun's truly delivers a one-of-a-kind dining experience, blending a chic and relaxed atmosphere with locally-inspired dishes that make for an unforgettable meal. The restaurant, tucked within our hotel, is the perfect spot to wind down and embrace the spirit of Hawaii. With a warm, inviting ambiance and live music, Mahina & Sun's creates an intimate yet vibrant vibe that sets the tone for a delightful first night on the island. As we dined, we felt like we'd stumbled into a gem, a place that seamlessly combines fresh island ingredients with culinary innovation. For our meal, we decided for the Handmade Cavatelli Bolognese, and it was nothing short of exceptional. The pasta, tender and perfectly textured, was clearly made in-house, capturing the essence of handmade quality. The Bolognese sauce, a harmonious blend of beef, pork, and tomato, was rich and full-bodied, coating each piece of cavatelli with savory perfection. The flavors were masterfully balanced, with the meatiness of the beef and pork enhanced by the acidity of the tomatoes, creating a comforting and flavorful bite every time. A generous sprinkling of fresh Parmesan added a final touch, its salty sharpness complementing the dish beautifully. Dining here on our first evening in Hawaii was the perfect way to ease into our stay, allowing us to relax and savor a truly delicious meal without venturing far from our room. Mahina & Sun's has certainly set a high bar for the rest of our culinary adventures on the island!

Yelp
Last night at Mahina & Sunʻs we celebrated an incredible reunion! Lisa the F&B manager led us through the process of creating an incredible family style menu. They gave us an open poolside lanai that was both welcoming & private. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. To top it off the live music was great. Our Menu: Starters: Margherita pizza Chickpea fritters Ahi spread Shrimp Hush puppies Green Goddess salad Mains: Ribeye steak Roasted chicken Ahi Dessert: Banana pudding.

Yelp
Dining at Mahina and Sons on a Friday night is a great way to end your work week. Reservations were easy and directions to parking was clear. We were greeted both by the hotel front desk as well as the restaurant host. Seating was comfortable and there was a very relaxing, cool vibe. we sat poolside with live music. We ordered the seared ahi and the "off the hook." They seem to use sashimi grade or something close to it for their seared ahi. It was raw in the middle, but not grainy. Definitely seemed fresh. The chili pepper aïoli was on point and all the veggies, including limu , were fresh and very flavorful. The dish titled "off the hook" is made with Ono. It was cooked perfectly. The sauce was rich, but not overpowering. Loved it. On to dessert! We had the banana pudding and the mango sorbet. I don't know if they make the sorbet in house, but it tasted like a frozen mango - - very good! The banana pudding was inhaled because it was light, but not airy. Fresh bananas and a not super sweet banana pudding/whip cream on top. Two fresh fish dinners, two desserts, and a glass of wine came out to $100 total. Again, it's a great place when you wanna relax but not fall asleep.

Yelp
Best meal on the island hands down. Went back a second time the last night of our trip. Everything we tried on the menu was amazing and the bar has quality drinks.

Yelp
Came for the happy hour. We come here for the nightly music and just never ate here. The happy hour was pleasantly good. We got the pepperoni pizza it like a flat bread pizza. The fish and chips was food, the fries was perfectly fried. Crispy and soft in the middle. I thought I wouldn't like it as I usually don't like crinkled fries but in this case they were satisfying. We also got the lumpia it comes with 4 and they are larger in size compared the last place we ordered them. They were meaty. The sauce is good but I like the Thai sweet chili sauce with my lumpia. Happy hour is seating at the bar only. Time is 11:30 -5:30. We don't drink but everyone around us seems to enjoy their drinks. It is dog friendly here too.

Yelp
Cool vibe, good drinks, good food, and great service. Has all of the markings of a place I'd wanna return to. The live music was good, too. We did the chef's tasting menu "the feast" and the food was great. Fish was delicious and the side dishes were good, too, especially the root vegetables. The $37pp is for the appetizer, side dishes and dessert and you pay another $63 for the whole fish which was the main tonight. With a group of 3, we ended up paying $93pp which included a drink each. Not bad for a tasting menu!

Yelp
Had Thanksgiving dinner here and the plated options were ok. No flexibility what so ever. For $50 a plate I would have expected slightly more. The waitress started out well then seemed to get annoyed when we asked for salt and pepper and alternative dessert options. Daytime food and bar service has been great this stay and last.

Yelp
Had the smoked ahi dip. Nothing particularly amazing in my opinion. Tasted like smoked whitefish dip we get in Michigan. 3/5 Had the chicken wings as well. More like fried chicken w some spice. 3/5 Had the pork chop and I would say this was my favorite by far. 5/5. Well seasoned and the sauce was delicious. A perfect plate. MY son had the fish and chips and it was pretty basic. 3/5. Tiny fish portion for the price. My daughter had the pizza and she ate it all. Said it was really good. 5/5 My wife had the risotto. She said it was a 4. Said the shrimp was over seasoned and the risotto was under seasoned. Neat place w ambiance and glad we tried. Was good for my wife who has celiac. I'd say a 3.5/5 especially w the cost.

Yelp
I was visiting with my partner and their group of friends (total of 12). I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone ever. Overpriced, WORST service, and portions were extremely small. Just a typical place to eat and not accommodating at all. It was the worst meal of our entire vacation.

Yelp
The food at Mahina & Sun's was delicious. The dishes are farm to table with ingredients sources from local farmers and growers. The food is a fusion of flavors that celebrate Hawaii's diverse cultures but amplified. The food was delicious but pricey. The service was timely and friendly. We brought our dogs with us as we were staying at the Surf Jack Hotel. It is definitely dog friendly and even though they do not have a dog specific menu, they were able to recommend food they could cook to cater to our puppies. We really appreciated that, although, I would love it, if they created a dog menu since they are a dog friendly establishment. This is a great option if you have pets and would like to go to a fancy dinner out with your fur babies. The ambience is beautiful, relaxed, casual but also elegant. The decor and the seating is comfortable and feel a little bit more posh than a casual establishment. There is entertainment from local performers which adds to a great date night ambience.

Yelp
We booked Mahina & Sun's because we wanted fresh local ingredients with a contemporary twist and they delivered on all levels, quality of food, excellent preparation, attentive service and classy retro Waikiki ambiance. Wow. Located a few blocks from Waikiki beach, Mahina & Sun's was nestled into the retro Surfjack hotel and presented cozy tables indoors as well as around the dreamy illuminated blue water pool. Lovely atmosphere with soothing contemporary Hawaiian music throughout the evening on Saturday night. Everything we ordered was fresh, well presented and perfectly en pointe: Oysters on the half shell Avocado Tacos Naked Pig (bacon) Pizza Smoked Ahi Spread 1/2 Roasted Chicken Pork Shoulder Luau Seared Ahi Beef Burger The Queen's Gambit Martini was an absolute stunner, partially encased in a mountain of ice and generous enough for 2 servings! Bonus: This restaurant, newly opened at the time, was chosen by Barack Obama to host the Zuckerbergs during a visit during his last term as Potus. This was the perfect experience for one of our last meals in Waikiki. Memorable!

Yelp
We couldn't have asked for a more delightful experience! Four of us enjoyed the Family Style Dinner -- the fish for the night was red snapper, deliciously fried and accompanied by three house-made sauces, pesco crudo (melt-in-your-mouth blue marlin), pickled vegetables, cucumber salad, rice, bok choy, taro with an amazing garlic aioli, and refreshing and light banana pudding. The live music was beautiful, the service friendly, and the atmosphere so comfortable and tropical! Highly, highly recommend!!

Yelp
Mahina & Sun's is a local restaurant/bar with class and hospitable Hawaiian hospitality that won't break the bank, and it is accentuated often with live music that isn't overbearing, but more accommodating for convivial conversation. The open air layout offers seating near the pool, as well as seating with a more cozy inside feel that doesn't alienate outdoor ambiance. The bar area is rather centrally located and inviting, together with wonderful hosts who serve a smorgasbord of smiles. The food and cocktails are creative, delightfully delectable, and remarkably remarkable. This isn't a tourist trap, and certainly not a chain restaurant, but a thoughtful dining experience with enough attention to detail that you won't want to leave..., so return often to capitalize on the charm that is Mahina & Sun's.

Yelp
Peaceful evening celebrating Valentines Day at Mahina & Sun's restaurant in the Surfjack Hotel. They had many options for dinner ranging from dinner sets, Valentines specials and Mardi Gras selections. The decor is tropical and there are options to sit indoors, close to the pool or on the patio. The food was well cooked and I ate everything quickly. Ordered the shrimp cocktail, the pork dinner entre, and the chocolate tart. I took a pic of some of my food selections. Service was perfect in my opinion. The waitress was great - she did everything perfectly and had a great smile. I found parking at the Centric hotel on Seaside Avenue. Pull a ticket, park and get ticket validated by the Mahina staff. $8 for 4 hours.

Yelp
I came here because of the ad on television stating that they were celebrating Bastille day ! What better combination to be in Hawaii and celebrating Bastille day! Since having lived in France I have of course celebrated this very special holiday first every year. First time to celebrate this French holiday in Hawaii. However, lol Lisa the mgr had to do most of the service as my server was an attentive and was not pleased with me not excepting Burnt Rye bread toast with my escargot order! I had to of course explained that Ryebread is never served as a substitute, for baguette! Especially burnt! She then tried to explain to me that the menu, even though it said, baguette was not updated yet because they did not have any baguette?? Lisa promptly went in, obtain the correct accompaniment to my Escargot, which was as described on the menu as baguette! For the main dish, I ordered bouillabaisse, which was fantastic! The route was perfect and the octopus was it added treat! I haven't decided if I will return here again, but it was a nice way to celebrate, Quatorze Juliet in Hawaii!

Yelp
If it's good enough for former President Obama it's got to be GOOD Located in the lobby area of the Surfjack Hotel, You'll find Mahina & Sun's with bar and table seating. They have an area on the east side of the restaurant cornered off. I suppose that's designed for larger groups. or, even the President of the United States. Despite being in Waikiki (dead center of Waikiki I'd say) their menu items are priced right. I'd suggest the family feast $37 per person giving you a chance to try their signature dishes. This visit caused my dining partners to order starters and their main entree claiming the Family Feast was too much for their tummies. Whatever you do BE SURE TO GET THEIR BANANA PUDDING DESSERT. Parking? Slim to none. They validate parking over at the Hyatt Centric on Kuhio and Seaside. DRIVERS! know this or you will be one sad puppy driving around on the hunt for a parking stall. Your other alternative (smarter alternative I think) is to Uber/Lyft to Mahina & Sun's. Service EXCELLENT Entertainment regular here! so check the schedule before you go, just in case you have a favorite entertainer.... Hana Hou!

Yelp
3 stars only bc of the drinks and service but my god.. -10 for food Please do yourself and your stomach a favor and do NOT eat here Drinks were fantastic and Nina was great and only reason for the 3 stars. We ordered the lumpia, super greasy The clams, inedible and super fishy which is clear that it's not fresh or from this year The oysters which I'm sure weren't oysters And the crab hush puppies aka bread was flavorless and just plain old bad. Hawaii may be beautiful but food is beyond sub par and this place couldn't even get to bad.. it stayed under level inedible You've been warned.

Yelp
Mahina in Hawaiian means moon. We came here for dinner. It is located at The Surfjack Hotel & Swim Club. The ambiance is casual with nightly entertainment 6:30PM - 9PM. We started with cocktails. I had the Escape, which is their twist on a pina colada and painkiller. It was great. One of us had the Trinidad Sour, which we all thought was unique. As an entree I had the seared ahi. It came with kalo (taro) that was fried. We all enjoyed our food and had a great time. It exceeded my expectations.

Yelp
I was invited for a happy hour excursion on a Friday afternoon and we chose Mahina & Sun's. Essentially a restaurant, bar, and pool bar, it's easily located just off Lewers in the Surfjack Hotel. They have all kinds of seats: comfortable cushy wood chairs, picnic tables, bar stools, sofas, and indoor tables and seats. In the afternoon it's warm with the sun hitting the chairs closer to the pool. One main reason we went here was it's dog friendly, there were a few about and ours was happy to be along. You order at the bar, food is brought to the table, drinks to you while you wait. The menu is available online; be sure to look at the happy hour menu separately as the prices and selection are different. We ordered a few beers (served in cans or on draft, glasses available), and each ordered a taro burger, which is their own veggie burger. I loved the flavors and consistency of the "meat", it was a really delicious take on it and the happy hour price was even better. The only real negative was the service wasn't great; it seemed no one that was working that day was happy to be there, which really felt like a drag on our fun Aloha Friday. Maybe that was just day; we do look forward in going again soon. They take reservations, which seem like a good idea as the night progresses. This is definitely a hidden gem of a spot in Waikiki.

Yelp
Very bland food. The only thing saving this review is that our waitress was very kind. She was clearly new and forgot some things, but very sweet. Starting off with the clams as an appetizer. The base was very watery, and it lacked a sort of body/thickness that would improve the dish. The flavor was just spice, but it didn't compliment the clams at all. I got the hand cut pasta which lacked any and all flavor. It was very soupy, like the clams, and overall, it was an unenjoyable eating experience. My family members got the fresh catch, ribeye steak, and the shrimp etoufee (which was apparently a special, but there was not a single thing special about it). I tried their dishes, and they were also very average and lacking flavor. There are so many other better restaurants in the surrounding area, so I suggest you look somewhere else - unless you want your food to be seasoned with nothing.

Yelp
Fun spot for dinner. The ambience is chic but with beachy vines, lighting is very dim, pinkish and romantic. We had the papaya chicken soup which was good- the shredded chicken was juicy. of course I was expecting papaya, but it must've been a different species? It was more like a radish- although that might not have been the papaya- it was honestly hard to see in the dim lighting haha, but either way there was no papaya fruit flavor which was fine- the soup was great Kale salad was excellent- nice generous portion, fresh Crudo- fresh, well seasoned, comes with a a good amount of pieces for sharing, Flatbread Pizza- I love some thin crust pizza, but this was literally a cracker! the toppings were fine, but also minimal since they're held by a cracker. Service was great, food was fast

Yelp
The food was excellent. I ordered the crab hush puppies and the ahi entree. The ambiance was retro picnic-style seating, with lawn furniture and live music next to the pool. The reason I would not return and only gave it 4 stars is the poor service. I had a reservation and upon arrival was greeted by the kind manager/hostess. Once we were seated we waited over 30 min for our server to come by to take our drink/appetizer order. The appetizer took an hour to arrive at which time we were finally able to place our food order (the server hadn't been back to take our order yet). We never saw our server again until she brought the check. I was in no hurry but 2 hours to receive my food was a bit extreme - especially with no drink refills to tie me over. Overall, the food was delicious and the live music was v enjoyable, but I would not return.

Yelp
If you want great food with a nice, casual semi open air atmosphere, this is the place. This Waikiki restaurant like Ed Kenny's others, offers locally sourced dishes with local roots. It made me really happy that my foodie friends visiting from the East Coast listed our dinner here as one of their dining highlights. 5 stars for the food! Everything we had was good and we ordered a bunch of things. My friends even remarked on the quality of the crinkle cut French fries which were nothing fancy but just done right. We ate family style which I love so you can try lots of different dishes. I really liked how many dishes came with fresh touches of local produce like watercress and tomatoes. Starred dishes were my faves: *He'e salad -trendy these days. Tender and tasty, I also really liked the smoked paprika fried potatoes that accompanied it. *Pork chop with luau leaf & Lomi tomato- my foodie friend who had never had it and I both loved the luau leaf cooked in coconut milk. Seared ahi with fiddlehead fern-always excited to see warabi on a menu *Chicken papaya soup- happy to find this Filipino comfort food in a nice restaurant. Nice and clean. Ahi tartare- smooth chopped raw fish Carrot shrimp risotto- very good just not my personal fave Naked pig pizza - looked really good but left this one for the kids to enjoy *Hand cut pasta with beef Ragu- excellent! Not something I would normally order at a farm to table local restaurant but they got this one right! Service was friendly but hard to flag down. The lighting is in the low side which can be romantic depending on the company you keep, but also hard on those with aging eyes! Definitely wanna return for the Mahina Family Feast!

Yelp
Located in the Surfjack Hotel, this gem of a place is amazing! We ordered the Mahina Feast which could have fed 3-4 people. Lots of delicious side dishes that paired well with the whole fried fish. They had live music and played a movie (on mute) over a large outdoor screen over the pool. As if that wasn't plenty, at 7:30 pm, they had a special event with dragon dancers to bring in the Lunar New Year. It warmed my heart that they celebrated this! Our server was amazing and made this experience even better. This was the BEST dining experience during our stay in O'ahu!

Yelp
This was a place some of our friends told us we needed to try. Great ambience and live music. Drinks were strong and very tasty. Service was great.. We ordered: Chicken papaya soup- very good Avocado tacos- good but only one slice of avocado and tiny for the price... The naked pig pizza- smelled amazing!!! I was told this was delicious. Seared ahi- delicious Vegetable platter- good but the mushrooms tasted like dirt so wouldn't pay for this again. Banana pudding- looked delicious this was a favorite of my party. Goat Cheesecake- very creamy. Overall a good dining experience. There are different menus based on where you sit and time of day.

Yelp
From the moment we walked in for our reservation, our waiter Landon was in a rush to get us in and out even though the place was barely even 30% at capacity. It all went downhill from there, Rude attitude, rush service, most importantly the least flavorful dishes we've ever tasted and we travel alot to different places and restaurants. Menu sounded delicious, but all food was extremely underwhelming. All the dishes we ordered had absolutely no flavor at all. Had to ask for salt and lemon for the 3 dishes we did order before finally calling it quits before our main dinner was even out. Bland, flavorless, and terrible attitude by "Manager" Landon. The "executive Chef" might need to go back to culinary school because if he's not tasting his own food he prepares and adjusts accordingly, then either his taste buds are shot or he just doesn't care. Food also seemed prw-prepared or made in bulk as it came out pretty quickly The only positive thing I can say about this place is it has a nice vibe. A vibe which you can easily find anywhere else close by with much better tasting food if you actually enjoy your food not tasting like cardboard. Would highly avoid this place. So many better options for anyone visiting. Paid for the appetizers and drinks we ordered and asked for the check and left. If there's an executive chef working here, he's either incapacitated or blind to his own food biases.

Yelp
I've eaten here many times since it first opened, located in Lewers street in the Surfjack Hotel, the ambiance really captures old timey surf culture. It's a very fun concept, the food also translates that same nostalgia. Their menu is filled with lots of local ingredients and seafood which I love and also hand cut pasta which I also love. I ordered the hand made cavatelli in beef ragu, smoked ahi dip and the off the hook ( fresh catch with ulu purée and asparagus). I loved everything. Although, the ragu didn't compare to the Town ragu and hand cut pasta, but it was a close third. I can describe to you all the ways in which the restaurant is amazing but you just have to go, unless you're picky then don't go.

Yelp
Food seriously seriously lacked flavor. I think they completely forgot to season the risotto? 2 of us ordered it and we were both SO disappointed. We got 2 cocktails, and more than half of the drinks was ice. We got 2 dozen oysters, one of us got sick. So not sure if maybe one or a couple were bad. The clam was the only thing we enjoyed. Also, our server seemed extremely annoyed to be there? We were celebrating my parents 30th wedding anniversary, and we let them know, but our server did not care one bit. Barely said anything to us the whole night. Haha. Guess you don't have to show any customer service when you know you're getting automatic 20% gratuity. The manager was extremely nice and accommodating though, and made up for it by bringing a little something for my parents in the end. Ambiance was nice, but plenty of other options to explore on the island.

Yelp
I've never seen such a cute hotel restaurant like this before! Everything except the parking was fantastic. A lot of other reviews say to park at the Hyatt Centric because they'll validate, but it's a 2 block walk away. You're better off finding street parking around the block. We got to sit right at the edge of the beautiful pool with a great view of the live musician and he was fantastic! Truly a professional that knows how to set the atmosphere. The decor was so cute, from the plants wrapped around the lanai and the little magnetic lamp on the table. They started us off with boiled peanuts and drinks that were strong and delicious (dangerous!). The real star of the show here is the pork chop entree and the chicken milanese. I am 100% serious when I tell you this was the BEST pork chop I've ever had in my life. It was perfectly seasoned and tender - it almost felt like eating steak!! The dish in its entirety was basically a deconstructed and elevated laulau. Coconut creamed tea leaves for the base, the pork chop, then topped with lomi tomato. I'm drooling just thinking about it again. The chicken milanese was also fantastic. So crispy and moist! The waitress that brought our food said not to forgot to squeeze the lemon over it because it would make a huge difference and she was not wrong. It added that last touch to bring the whole dish together. The grapes were also surprisingly paired well with the chicken, arugula, and pecorino as a whole. A little bummed we were too full for dessert but I bet those are tasty too. I can't wait to tell all my friends about this cozy spot! A tip for Mahina: consider combining your menus into one file so your guests don't need to download 4 separate PDFs to view the drinks and food menus and switch back and forth between them.

Yelp
The seating is nice and staff friendly. I will say the portions are insanely small. Not at all like the photos. We ordered the fresh fish meal and the fish was maybe 3 oz, 4 pieces of asparagus and maybe 1/4 cup of a mashed potato. It was plated pretty with lots of garnish. For $36 i will pass.

Yelp
Such a lovely touch to surf jack hotel in Hawaii. This place is right next to the beautiful open air pool. Enjoy having dinner while listing to live music while looking up to the sky. I order the handmade pasta and let me tell you. This plate was full of so much flavor. Bacon and so many yummy mushrooms. It is on the higher price but it was worth it.

Yelp
This place is great! The food is so so delicious, I got the off the hook which was phenomenal and the deconstructed banana pudding was also the perfect way to top off a wonderful dinner. They are dog friendly, have amazing music and the staff are so great! The manager was absolutely just the kindest and she even sang a song with the band night we were there that nearly brought us to tears bc it was so beautiful. Happy to have finally tried this spot! Can't wait to come back

Yelp
Hands down one of the best places to eat in Waikiki! Coming from NY I must say the food and drinks are comparable to the big apple. Oysters and Pork chops are to die for. We came here 2x on our trip since this place was soooo good. I also highly recommend their version of an old fashion with coconut water ice cube. If the food and drinks weren't enough, they had the most amazing artist playing when we went. I think his name was Big John? He definitely set the ambiance with his soothing voice and catchy tunes. We will definitely come back here our next trip.

Yelp
Food: fish was cooked well, accompanied mashed potatoes was watery, ragu pasta was inedible watery and tasteless, risotto was the same as the pasta. Service: server was not engaging, zero attempt to reconcile food issues when addressed. Likelihood of returning...very low to no.

Yelp
Dinner at Mahina & Sun's was phenomenal. The food, vibes, and service was on point Alina was our server and she was friendly, fast, and personable. We enjoyed our poolside spot and got live entertainment during our meal. I love the local infusion into simple surf and turf dishes like the pork chop and ahi. The seared ahi came with sweet potato and 'ulu (breadfruit) and the pork chop had a nice twist on creamed spinach, using coconut cream/milk instead. Not to mention both were perfectly cooked and melt in your mouth delicious. Took some banana bread to go-- made for the perfect snack the next morning

Yelp
Wandered in for happy hour deals at this restaurant in the Surfjack hotel-- and it offered up a decent food experience. Happy hour Paloma and Maui beer on deck were excellent. As far as food goes: the taste is solid for the ahi melt overall but honestly it could've had more melted cheese and more ahi. The burger was a solid-- so I prob would order that next time instead. One major downfall is that it takes **alot** of waiting time for the food even when no one else is around. We were a little confused about this considering there didn't appear to be any one else in the restaurant area. Very sleepy bunch? But the bartender was nice and everything. Just... quiet around and slow food service. Nonetheless, the restaurant does give hipster vibes and is tucked away so I would most likely return just for that. I will adjust my expectations of wait time and just enjoy my adult beverage in the meantime.

Yelp
We stumbled upon Mahina & Sun's and had such great food and got to hear live music. We ordered swordfish, that was cooked to perfection. Also avocado tacos and a kale quinoa salad. The dressing was so yummy. Our server Mikey was fantastic and gave great recommendations. Couldn't recommend this restaurant more.

Yelp
Cute atmosphere, good drinks, and happy hour! This spot is nice for a happy hour lunch. It is open next to the small pool, so there is some noise from there. There is enjoyable food and friendly waiters.

Yelp
The reservation process was great. Lisa was amazing, she was very responsive which was so nice. The service was ok, he seemed very out of it, kind of spacey. I got the Escape cocktail, someone at the table said it tasted like suntan lotion and that was all I could taste. I ordered the avocado tacos and clams to eat. The avocado tacos had 0 taste, it was like eating crispy air. The clams were awful, like shockingly bad, they were slimy and tasted weird. The server was so back and forth that I didn't even bother mentioning it, but other people said the same. Someone got the piggy pizza, it was chopped up bacon and onions on a piece of crust, that's not a pizza, don't call it a pizza and maybe it will be okay. Someone else got the oxtail risotto and she said it was good. I don't know, maybe it was an off night, it just was disappointing because I've heard good things about this restaurant.

Yelp
I love Mahina and Sun's at the Surfjack Hotel in Waikiki! I made a reservation for a friend and I here on OpenTable - easy peasy! We arrived, and they checked our vaccination card and ID at the entrance of the the Surfjack. We got our wristband, and we were good to go. We had a lovely table near the iconic Wish You Were Here pool, and we ordered cocktails - they have a great selection on their Happy Hour (more like Happy Day menu because it's all day from lunch time onward)! We started out with the Maui Mule and Here Comes the Sun drinks - yum! Dinner is Thursday through Sunday evenings right now, and they have a line-up of live music every evening. We were here on a Friday, and it was a father and son duo playing Hawaiian and pop music covers - lovely accompaniment to our meal. I absolutely enjoyed the clams (I wanted them all to myself! So flavorful and ono!) and the smoke ahi toast with pickled onions and egg on top - such great flavor combinations - also want to eat this all by myself too! The Monchong (a lesser known fish to me but ooo, so good), and it served with ulu (if I see ulu on a menu, I get it). This was a perfectly cooked dish and the ulu alonside the Monchong - so glad I got this! I also thoroughly enjoyed the handmade pasta with beef - mmm divine! Thank you Asami or "Sam" for the recommendations, Landon our server and thank you, Mahina and Suns and Surfjack for treating us like ohana! You are a gem of a restaurant and hotel with aloha spirit and everything you need all in one place!

Yelp
Fabulous Ambience nestled in an adorable boutique hotel right on Lewers Street in Waikiki. Lovely Music by the pool nightly. The food was delicious. Five star restaurant. Fresh and delicious. Mikey was our server. He was attentive and polite. A casual but upscale restaurant. Kudos to the chef and staff this is a hidden gem. We ate there twice it was soooo yummy.

Yelp
Dinner show vibe, wasn't expecting that. Had the clams starter an the ribeye dinner. Both were excellent. Meal and cocktail was great. Wouldn't expect food this tasty from a dinner show format. Atmosphere is poolside.
