A must-visit heritage cluster — ancient art, sea breeze, and seamless exploration!
I recently visited the Mahishasura Mardhini Rock-Cut Mandapa, along with the Olakkannesvara Temple, the Old Lighthouse, and the modern lighthouse — all located in the same beautiful hill area of Mahabalipuram. It was an incredible experience where history, mythology, and natural beauty come together in one place.
The Mahishasura Mardhini Mandapa is simply mesmerizing — carved in the 7th century, it has powerful panels of Goddess Durga slaying Mahishasura, Lord Vishnu reclining on Adisesha, and the Somaskanda panel of Shiva, Parvati, and Skanda in the center. The detailing, the sense of motion, and the calm atmosphere inside make it truly special. Just above it sits the Olakkannesvara Temple, which once served as the old lighthouse, and right beside it is the new lighthouse, offering panoramic sea views.
The best part is that all these sites are covered under one ticket — which also includes:
Pancha Rathas (Five Rathas)
Shore Temple
Krishna’s Butter Ball
Mahishasura Mardhini Mandapa & Olakkannesvara Temple
Arjuna’s Penance / Descent of the Ganges
If you buy the ticket at the counter, it costs ₹40, but if you scan the QR code or purchase online through the ASI website, it’s just ₹35, and you can skip the queue — super easy and hassle-free.
The whole area is clean, well maintained, and rich with history. The carvings are slightly weathered in parts, but that only adds to the charm of their age. The hilltop view with the ocean breeze and the sight of the temples glowing under the sun is unforgettable.
Highly recommend visiting early morning or evening for better light and fewer crowds. Carry water, wear a hat, and take your time to explore — every carving tells a story here.
A perfect destination for art lovers, history buffs, and anyone who wants to feel the soul of ancient India!
