Ambergris Caye, Belize Travel Guide

"A relatively large resort composed of cottages, suites, and villas that nonetheless emphasizes local heritage, artisanal craftsmanship, and attentive service to create an intimate feel. Signature amenities include a private beach club reachable by water taxi with a full-service beach bar and grill, plus cabanas and hammocks suspended over exceptionally clear water." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. Why I’ve Become Obsessed With Hotel Floor Plans

"When that fails, Google is also helpful—that’s how I found developer floor plans at Mahogany Bay, in Belize, part of Hilton’s Curio Collection, where we stayed last December."

Customer service at its finest! What a beautiful resort. I am a travel advisor and scheduled tour of the property with Melina, the group and events coordinator. She was knowledgeable, pleasant, and very kind. We discussed the rocky roads and the design/loyout of the suites within the property and how it may be a challenge for those who rely on a wheelchair to get around. Otherwise, the suites and event spaces are gorgeous, clean, spacious, and the metal roofs made for amazing background noise when the rain fell - perfect sleeping sounds! ||In the Verandah restaurant, Gilmer was an absolute treat! Courteous, thoughtful, jovial, and respectful. To start off each morning with his kindness and smile in the restaurant set the tone for amazing days ahead. ||Everyone here is fantastic! Due to the storm, the short stay, and plans with my friends here to celebrate a milestone birthday, I didn't get a chance to make it to the private beach club. I suppose that gives me a reason to return!!

The resort has great potential. I really like the design of the property, but it just seems like nothing was properly maintained. all over the property, you will see electrical cables protruding from the ground with little to no protection. I am not sure if they are live or abandoned cables. I think my wife was right when she said that the place needs better management. They have workers, but it doesn’t seem like anybody is making a list of all the things that need to be fixed. Some many repairs needing to be done everywhere. We had to move rooms when we first arrived because the lock in our room was not working. My wife wondered why the rooms did not provide a large mirror. They have only one mirror in the bathroom that you can only see your face in. They could easily add some small shelving around the bathroom sinks with just a few pieces of wood. The great house was always dirty like no staff was cleaning it daily. One big con for our stay was the private beach access. The resort owns a beautiful private beach and it’s a good reason for choosing this resort over others, but there doesn’t seem to be a guarantee that you will get to visit it. They told us that they were going to open it. We canceled our tour to go to the beach instead. We went to the dock and waiting for a long time but no boat came. We then ask the girl at the front desk and she told us that the trip was canceled. We were on a list, yet we got no notification of the cancellation. The resort is good but needs to be better maintained. Better management and coordination of services is needed. Communication between staff members seem to be an issue. Staff needs to get better with notifying guests of changes to services. I heard it many times from staff, “Oh, I told you that, but I just got back from vacation and didn’t know things had changed.” Lastly, if you are gong to advertise the private beach as a benefit of staying at the resort, then you need to make sure it will be available to the guests.|The Coffee shop was very good. Hotel Restaurant was good, we really liked the wings. We loved the iguanas and birds all over the place. Management needs to walk through the rooms often to identify issues and get them fixed. The shower design was really cool, we liked it. The blinds needed repairs. Replace those little wooden pegs in the windows with nails or metal bolts to secure the windows because most of the pegs were broken when we got there.

I had a great trip and the cottage was just beautiful and quaint The porters Jairo and Alan picked us up every day all day for the lobby for breakfast for a taxi ride to go to Robyn‘s kitchen for the great jerk chicken. They were just so fun and gave us positive energy , the restaurant staff was amazing and hard-working Kimberly Elvera and Gilmer were so attentiveto all of our needs and Alex served the best drinks and champagne by the poolside ! David was the best taxi driver chauffeur for Belize tourism he took us to the best restaurants Elvi’s Maxis the airport, he was always on timeand took care of us like we were his personal family. I never felt so safe I will be returning and let’s not forget the pinch hitter driver Kelvin that came in to assure us that downtown was safe to explore.

Extremely Disappointed! We spent six days at this resort, and every day I had to visit the front desk for some issue. On the first morning, we woke up to no running water. While checking in, I overheard another guest pleading to be moved due to the same problem. When I informed the front desk, they acknowledged the issue and promised to move us within 20 minutes. We waited and were given 5 gallons of water to flush the toilet if needed. Three hours later, after returning from breakfast in town, our room was still not ready. When we finally got our room, the towels provided were wet, discolored, and torn. We had to call for new towels. On day three, we tried to use the pool and bar area, but both were vacant due to a mosquito problem. On day four, before our fishing trip, I requested the room to be freshened up and new towels. We were left with one bath towel and three hand towels. I had to go to the office again for towels, which were delivered hours later while we were at dinner. On day five, after a full day snorkeling excursion, our key didn't work, and the room lacked fresh towels and drinking water. The resort advertises having everything you need on-site, but each spot was either closed or unattended. The TV lost connection every night around 10 pm. The roads were unpaved, full of potholes, and always muddy, which tracked into the room. The volleyball nets were torn down. There was constant construction going on, so it was very noisy during the day. Also, large trucks were constantly driving on the property creating dust and splattering mud. You have to share these roads while on a golfcart. Every resort we've stayed at before, we've enjoyed the bar, pool, restaurants, and the people. This place seemed 75% full, yet there was no one at any of their locations. The food was overpriced, with a hamburger costing $22 plus a $16 service charge. The photos give the impression of being on the water/beach, but you're actually surrounded by brown water with alligators. The resort is 15 to 20 minutes from town by golf cart. I'm writing this review because I don't want anyone else to experience what we did. The resort advertises itself as a dream destination, but it was far from it.

The Mahogany Bay Resort is an amazing location on San Pedro with individual cottages and suites. The property is shared by the Hilton and Marriot. A private beach is 10 minutes boat ride away with white sand, warm clear water. The Hotel staff is attentive. You can rent a golf cart or request a taxi. The property is 15 minutes from the Airport and Ferry.

Stayed 8 nights at Mahogany Bay for our first time coming to Belize. We were very happy with the "Upper Keeping Suite." Room was clean, tidy, and well prepared. While Belize is hot and humid, the two air conditioning units kept the suite cool and comfortable at all times of the day. Resort staff were friendly and outgoing. When making reservations for the private beach boat, requesting additional towels, or needing help finding a knife to cut locally purchased fruit, staff was very prompt and helpful. Mahogany Bay is located about a 10-15 minute drive from central San Pedro, which makes it a good way to avoid the crowds of downtown. The private beach is a great way to enjoy beach time, without having to 'share' with the rest of San Pedro beach-front resorts. We ate the majority of our meals off-resort. But the food that we did eat at Mahogany Bay was enjoyed.

I checked into Mahogany Bay today after a very long travel day—stuck overnight at the airport due to a missed connection—and all I wanted was a warm welcome. Unfortunately, the front desk experience was the exact opposite. The customer service was cold, not welcoming at all, and frankly disappointing. After a rough trip, I expected at least a smile or some kindness when checking in. Ironically, the grounds staff around the property have been far friendlier than the front desk team, which is not what I would expect from a Hilton property. The hotel grounds themselves are undeniably beautiful and well-maintained, which makes this review even more frustrating to write. However, the room itself was not cleaned to Hilton standards—something I know firsthand as both a frequent Hilton guest and a former Hilton employee. There were no small towels provided, which is a big inconvenience. I found hair in the shower, the blinds and lamps were dusty, and there was even water on the floor near the toilet when I arrived. I booked this property based on glowing TikTok reviews, but unfortunately my experience hasn’t matched the hype. In hindsight, I wish I had gone with Alaia or Sunset Caribe instead. Mahogany Bay has potential, but the service and room cleanliness need serious improvement before I would consider staying here again.

An unforgettable stay in paradise. My experience at Mahogany Bay Resort in Belize was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed, cared for, and genuinely at ease. The resort itself is stunning—every detail, from the lush landscaping to the charming white cottages, creates a peaceful, tropical haven. One of the highlights of my stay was taking the boat ride out to the private beach club. It felt like a hidden oasis—crystal-clear turquoise water, soft white sand, and just the right blend of privacy and comfort. I could’ve stayed there all day, and honestly, I nearly did. What truly made the experience memorable, though, was the hospitality. Every member of the staff was warm, attentive, and eager to make my stay special. A special thanks to Chris and Alex for going above and beyond with thoughtful touches that made me feel at home. Whether it was helping with local recommendations or just greeting me with a smile, it meant a lot. The food, the design, the atmosphere—it all struck a perfect balance of luxury and authenticity. If you’re looking for a place to relax, recharge, and be immersed in Belizean charm, this is it. I’m already dreaming of my next visit.
