Ambergris Caye, Belize Travel Guide

"A relatively large resort composed of cottages, suites, and villas that nonetheless emphasizes local heritage, artisanal craftsmanship, and attentive service to create an intimate feel. Signature amenities include a private beach club reachable by water taxi with a full-service beach bar and grill, plus cabanas and hammocks suspended over exceptionally clear water." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. Why I’ve Become Obsessed With Hotel Floor Plans

"When that fails, Google is also helpful—that’s how I found developer floor plans at Mahogany Bay, in Belize, part of Hilton’s Curio Collection, where we stayed last December."

Traveling to Belize was my first time traveling solo outside of the US. The staff at Mahogany made me feel right at home! I booked a one bedroom cottage and was upgraded to a three bedroom when I arrived! The villa was very clean and spacious and the air worked great. It was my birthday and the cleaning staff made me a towel cake and left me a nice fruit plate! A special thank you to Miguel and Alan for the hospitality!

Eric was an outstanding and professional worker at this resort. He is a manager for the resort (safety and security). He went above and beyond his call of duty. Eric, thanks! I would go back to this resort again and again. The staff were accommodating and Ricky at the Pool Club is such a gentleman and generous young man. Thanks Ricky! I would return even though it was a long way to travel.

The Mahogany Bay Resort is visually stunning with beautiful grounds and a picturesque beach club—but travelers need to be aware of some serious downsides that affected our stay.||Despite being a Hilton property, the resort is plagued by sand fleas, sun flies, and mosquitoes. While staff claims that spraying is done daily between 5–7 PM, this limited window is simply not enough, especially considering the resort is built on still brown water, which could potentially house crocodiles and serves as a breeding ground for insects. Sadly, the biting bugs weren’t just outdoors. We were bitten in our sleep, found bugs in the bed, and learned that sun flies and sand fleas come through small holes in the window screens. After reporting it, no one came to spray the room or change our bedding, and the resort offered no real solutions or preventative measures.||On the upside, the staff—especially Alex—was absolutely amazing. He was the highlight of our experience and the main reason we were able to enjoy ourselves at all. The beach club is gorgeous, with clear waters, but the shuttle schedule is so limited that it didn’t allow us to fully enjoy the space.||We actually spent the first half of our Belize trip deep in the jungle and didn’t need bug spray there, which says a lot. As seasoned travelers who love nature and stay in Hilton properties often, this was extremely disappointing. Unfortunately, we would not return to this resort. It’s a shame because the setting has potential, but until something serious is done about the insect issue, I can’t recommend it. Be warned: you will get bitten, and the bites are painful, swollen, and frustrating.||I hope the resort takes steps to address this for future guests. Right now, I would rate this as a 2-star experience at best.

We had an exceptional stay, thanks to the kindness and attentiveness of the entire team. I would like to take a moment to recognize a few individuals who made our visit especially memorable.||Kimberly and Elvira were our breakfast servers most mornings at The Verandah, and they were truly outstanding. Their hospitality skills are exceptional, and they consistently went above and beyond to ensure we were well taken care of. Thank you both for making our mornings so enjoyable.||Another team member who left a lasting impression was Jairo. On the day we arrived, he greeted us warmly, assisted with our luggage, and drove us to our room by golf cart. Throughout our stay, he was always friendly, stopping to chat whenever we crossed paths at the resort. We even met him in town one day, and on another occasion, I saw him playing soccer with friends—he invited me to join, which was a highlight of my trip as I’ve missed playing the sport. Thank you for that, Jairo… and remember: coconuts, two for one!||Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would be happy to return. One suggestion for improvement would be to increase mosquito control, particularly around the pool, private beach, and the outdoor area of The Verandah. Additionally, better maintenance of the hammocks and swings at the private beach would ensure guests can fully enjoy them.

Extremely Disappointed! We spent six days at this resort, and every day I had to visit the front desk for some issue. On the first morning, we woke up to no running water. While checking in, I overheard another guest pleading to be moved due to the same problem. When I informed the front desk, they acknowledged the issue and promised to move us within 20 minutes. We waited and were given 5 gallons of water to flush the toilet if needed. Three hours later, after returning from breakfast in town, our room was still not ready. When we finally got our room, the towels provided were wet, discolored, and torn. We had to call for new towels. On day three, we tried to use the pool and bar area, but both were vacant due to a mosquito problem. On day four, before our fishing trip, I requested the room to be freshened up and new towels. We were left with one bath towel and three hand towels. I had to go to the office again for towels, which were delivered hours later while we were at dinner. On day five, after a full day snorkeling excursion, our key didn't work, and the room lacked fresh towels and drinking water. The resort advertises having everything you need on-site, but each spot was either closed or unattended. The TV lost connection every night around 10 pm. The roads were unpaved, full of potholes, and always muddy, which tracked into the room. The volleyball nets were torn down. There was constant construction going on, so it was very noisy during the day. Also, large trucks were constantly driving on the property creating dust and splattering mud. You have to share these roads while on a golfcart. Every resort we've stayed at before, we've enjoyed the bar, pool, restaurants, and the people. This place seemed 75% full, yet there was no one at any of their locations. The food was overpriced, with a hamburger costing $22 plus a $16 service charge. The photos give the impression of being on the water/beach, but you're actually surrounded by brown water with alligators. The resort is 15 to 20 minutes from town by golf cart. I'm writing this review because I don't want anyone else to experience what we did. The resort advertises itself as a dream destination, but it was far from it.

KIMBERLY was our server at the resort's restaurant and she was PHENOMENAL! KIMBERLY was very sweet and helpful! We really enjoyed the warm hospitality of everyone in the resort. I wish the rooms were cooler, our A/C in our cottage was not working very well...they need better A/C units. Everything else was FANTASTIC!!! We enjoyed our stay.

Stayed 8 nights at Mahogany Bay for our first time coming to Belize. We were very happy with the "Upper Keeping Suite." Room was clean, tidy, and well prepared. While Belize is hot and humid, the two air conditioning units kept the suite cool and comfortable at all times of the day. Resort staff were friendly and outgoing. When making reservations for the private beach boat, requesting additional towels, or needing help finding a knife to cut locally purchased fruit, staff was very prompt and helpful. Mahogany Bay is located about a 10-15 minute drive from central San Pedro, which makes it a good way to avoid the crowds of downtown. The private beach is a great way to enjoy beach time, without having to 'share' with the rest of San Pedro beach-front resorts. We ate the majority of our meals off-resort. But the food that we did eat at Mahogany Bay was enjoyed.

Beautiful resort. Lots of construction taking place that limits the beauty a bit. Located near other upscale resorts. Lovely restaurant and pool club. Helpful reception. Quite easy to get to and get around to restaurants and shops.
