Ambergris Caye, Belize, Travel Guide

"With over 200 rooms spread across its collection of cottages, suites, and villas, Mahogany Bay Resort & Beach Club is one of the larger resorts in Belize. Despite its size, its unparalleled commitment to local heritage, craftsmanship, and second-to-none service makes it feel like a boutique property through and through. A favorite amenity is the resort's private beach club, accessible by water taxi and complete with a full-service beach bar and grill, as well as cabanas and hammocks suspended over impossibly clear waters." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. "A relatively large resort composed of cottages, suites, and villas that nonetheless emphasizes local heritage, artisanal craftsmanship, and attentive service to create an intimate feel. Signature amenities include a private beach club reachable by water taxi with a full-service beach bar and grill, plus cabanas and hammocks suspended over exceptionally clear water." - Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila Carley Rojas Avila is a bilingual travel writer, editor, and content marketer. Why I’ve Become Obsessed With Hotel Floor Plans

"When that fails, Google is also helpful—that’s how I found developer floor plans at Mahogany Bay, in Belize, part of Hilton’s Curio Collection, where we stayed last December."

Everyone was kind and polite but it didn't make up for the problems we had while we were staying at Mahogany Bay. We stayed there for a week. During that time we needed to interact with the front desk multiple times: -The door lock malfunctioned and we were locked out of our cabin for over an hour. -The screen fell off the front window. There is no glass and the mosquitoes make the screen a requirement. -Our front porch light went out. -The hot water heater broke. -There was no drinking water, required in Belize. -There were no towels after our first room service. (At this point we requested more towels and just kept the "do not disturb" sign on the door, having decided that housekeeping was not very helpful.) -One of the air conditioner units broke down. Though they promised to send someone over right away nobody showed and it was NEVER fixed. -Someone went through my backpack while we were away and $100 was stolen from inside the nightstand drawer. -We asked for two extra key cards and were told they could do it but if we didn't return them they would charge us $50 each. Weird. -The power was out for much of an afternoon, and the front desk told us the power was out for the entire island so we stayed in until it was back. It turned out that power was only out in the resort and the rest of the island was fine. We could have enjoyed ourselves elsewhere if given the correct information. Most of these are small on their own, but the aggregate made our stay extremely frustrating. It felt like there was always something we needed to address. The money being stolen was not small, of course. There is a safe that I was not using, so after that we stuffed as much as we could into the safe and stored our scuba gear at the dive shop. We felt much better about storing it there than in our locked unit at Mahogany Bay. We thought we were being cautious by staying somewhere with the Hilton name attached. It was a mistake. We fell in love with Belize but will never return to Mahogany Bay.

I stayed at Mahogany Bay, a Hilton Curio Collection property in San Pedro, Belize from December 22–26 to celebrate my birthday, and I truly had an amazing experience. From the moment I arrived, everyone was extremely friendly and welcoming. The service was outstanding. The bell staff were wonderful — they helped with my luggage and made sure I had access to reliable 24-hour taxi service, which made getting around very easy and stress-free. The property features beautiful cottage-style accommodations that feel very private, comfortable, and safe. The outdoor living space is especially relaxing and well designed. You do need a golf cart to get around, and honestly that was part of the fun — it really adds to the whole island experience. The pool area is gorgeous, and the food on property is absolutely delicious. But the highlight of my stay was definitely the private island. The boat ride over is so easy, and once you arrive, you’re greeted with some of the clearest, most beautiful water I’ve ever seen. There is a full bar, great food, beds, swings in the water, and the most peaceful atmosphere — it truly feels like paradise. I highly recommend Mahogany Bay — 10/10 across the board. In my opinion, this is the best property in San Pedro. I had the perfect birthday vacation and I cannot wait to return! — Patrick Pierre

We were really excited to stay here, but the customer service is terrible. Not what you would expect from a Hilton. The property and rooms were beautiful with plenty of room, and the property itself felt very safe. The customer service was the only issue we had here and it was really frustrating considering how much we paid for our family of 5 to stay. We were very excited for the private beach until we were told you had to sign up for it and they didn’t have any room on the boats while we were there?! There were no apologies, or understanding the frustration. Every-time I was at the front counter, there was one or maybe two people helping guests. Guests were going very angry in line, and talking about how horrible the service was for them as well. We ended up switching to a house on the property and the day before we checked out we were able to secure a space to get on the boat for our checkout day. When I got up to the counter to check out of both rooms, I was told we couldn’t use the beach anymore because we were checking out!! One of the main draws to this hotel was the private beach! I was able to reverse one check out so we could go but it took me not taking no for an answer and getting upset. Our kids would have been so bummed if we missed that opportunity. The beach itself was super cool! So much to do, absolutely gorgeous and the food/service was much better than the hotel itself. Go to the pool club when you stay there, it’s fantastic! And the farmhouse coffee shop is delicious! Both are privately owned but in the same neighborhood. If we ever come back to the island, we will never stay here again. Hilton, do better. There is so much potential.

This property is beautiful. The ease of having everything in walking distance made quick snacks and night drinks smooth. Leonardo was excellent for breakfast service in the dining restaurant. The staff are super friendly and helpful. We moved to a bigger room day 2 and the process was seamless. The rooms are clean and spacious. Would definitely stay again.

This was our 3rd stay at Mahogany Bay and it keeps getting better! The Beach Club and The Poolhouse are fantastic with great island vibes! Shoutout to employees Miguel C Sr and Jr, Alex at the Beachclub for being so friendly and personable! They made our stay so much more memorable! We were disappointed that the bicycles are gone as we loved biking the beach road each morning. But all in all, our visit was a 10 and we’ll definitely be back for our 4th visit!

Alan (driver), Jessie (housekeeping), and Miguel (waiter) were very nice and super helpful. It seemed like a lot of miscommunication across the staff as whole... waiters not knowing the policy around the complimentary breakfast buffet for Hilton Diamond members... workers not informed that my room actually existed, etc. I still have to make sure that I wasn't billed for $70+ USD for breakfast! Service was extremely slow with everything. As a Hilton Diamond member, I did NOT feel as if I had a Diamond member experience (I mean, my room was all the way at the back of the property next to construction and near run down cottages). Also there weren't many activities to do at the resort either. My stay wasn't horrible, but I wouldn't stay here again.||My room was right next to construction that was taking place. Several times when I was asked for my room number so that things could be charged to my room, the employees had never heard of my room number before and that that I may have been wrong. I had a remote to control my in-unit AC/ fan that barely worked and the battery cover was taped up because there was no actual cover. ||I felt like there wasn't a lot to do on the resort, so a golf cart was needed to leave and explore other things. The private beach was okay, I enjoyed the boat ride to and from the beach... but it wasn't as nice as the pictures made it look.

Very disappointing. We arrived in the evening and didn't get our golf cart until the morning so we had to eat at the restraunt (nothing off resort is walkable). The sushi restraunt was closed and they had a special pre fixe menu that we had to order from at the only open restraunt. $120/person USD. The meal was by far the worst meal we have had on our whole trip and was waaaayyyy overpriced. We left the meal still hungry and our food ranged from mediocre to inedible. My chicken was still bloody inside and the rum cake was all dried out and tasted terrible. We had multiple interactions during our stay that demonstrated a lack of process and organization. Every single time we asked for towels at the pool or beach club they were out. Service at the pool and beach club was super slow or they just never brought our drinks at all. We were promised one thing by one employee only to find out later that it wasn't the case. Ie. We signed up for a 1pm boat to the private beach but when we got to the dock at 12:50we were told that boat was full and another would be there in 5 min for us. The other boat came 40 minutes later.... We were told at the beach club that they would reserve an overwater cabana for us the next day but the concierge wouldn't let us get on a boat to get to the island and then also refused to let us book a cabana for the following day saying they are 1st come 1st served. All of this is fine if one person isn't promising one thing only to find out that it isn't possible. No one gives any effort to try to accommodate requests or deliver on their word. We have quickly learned not to trust what any of the employees say, we recommend getting all meals and drinks off resort (better service, quality and price), keep expectations for service very low...it's honestly so bad it's a running joke for us now (on our last day)

Positives: the private beach is amazing and the main redeeming quality. Some staff was great Negatives: smells like sewage, very unpleasant. Had lots of issues with rude staff and as a solo female traveler my first time ever feeling uncomfortable and unsafe with hotel staff. I was tipping a male staff member and had to go inside my room and he followed me inside my room without asking and kept lingering. I was uncomfortable so i said I had to leave and he asked when I was back to meet me which made me feel really weird. Hot water doesn't seem to have correct safety settings either. I burned my finger washing my hands. Asked front desk for a bandaid and was told i need to walk to their general store and purchase one. Outrageous "hospitality" from a Hilton hotel. There's also no sound proofing, so don't expect to get any sleep. You can hear literally every little thing. All around basically a spendy stay from hell minus a few kind staff members, good food and an admittedly really nice private beach (that's only accessible for 6 hours of the day)
