Ask a Local: Literary Edinburgh According to Poet Marcas Mac an Tauineir | Condé Nast Traveler

"Sharing that same Grassmarket–Fountainbridge nexus, Main Point Books is one of the essential secondhand shops I visit when hunting for pre-loved titles, each shop often having its own specialism." - Charlie Hobbs

Small bookstores in Edinburgh have a special charm! The vibes are different, cozy, warm, and full of character. I love how books are stacked everywhere, making each shop feel unique and inviting. The selection is also great, perfect for book lovers who enjoy discovering hidden gems!

Oh, what a glorious wee bookshop this one turned out to be. Found it utterly by happenchance, whilst looking for another bookshop - it later turned out to be that this street is the bookshop mile in Edinburgh. A brilliant store ran by a lovely lady. It is one of those places wherein everything is quaint, narrow pathways between the books and the shelves, books stacked everywhere. Ideal for the ones who love to shuffle through books and be surprised what may suddenly appear. Prices are excellent - ranging from Penguin Classics, LOEB Classical Library, to true antiquarium books. And the usual assortment in-between of hardcovers and paperbacks from over the recent years. All neatly organized, so what I say to you is that you set half an hour aside, and just search through the shelves and stacks of glorious books. You'll nary know what you may find.

Excellent second-hand bookshop, with a wide range of first-rate & uncommon books on subjects of interest. Tends to have limited opening on weekday afternoons, but that is of little importance compared to the delights on offer. Have regularly come across items that have been on my "hunting" list for quite some time. Everything to satisfy the true book lover.

The bookstore has a shelf for chess books and a box of vintage postcards, and do not miss the artist representation of Robert Louis Stevenson. The owner was helpful and patient with us, even letting us sit and talk while browsing.

A great second hand bookshop in central Edinburgh. Stocks a wide range of Scottish and Celtic titles, as well as lots of fiction, women's writing, some poetry and lots of other stuff. The prices are very reasonable and I always find something that I have been looking for!

Yelp
Huge new fan of this bookshop. Prices are low especially compared to other second hand bookstores in the area (naming no names) and owners are very friendly! great selection, and exactly as charmingly haphazard as all second hand bookshops should be. will be returning.

Yelp
A great little second hand book store, offering up all the traditions we book worms associate with pre-loved books. Lots of topics given their own sections, including poetry, the occult, military history and cinema. There's a big fiction section too, with titles arranged in no discernible order, making the hunt for interesting reads an enjoyable one. You'll find a wide selection of books here, both old and new. The owners chat away happily to regulars and it's a fuzzy and warm experience while you while away the time on bent spines and dust jackets. Prices are what you'd expect for second hand books; they are keen and reflect the type and quality of the read.

Yelp
Main Point Books is yet another delightful second hand bookstore in the centre of Edinburgh. Sitting just off West Port, it's the kind of secondhand store you simply can't ignore - it is packed with books. They're pouring out into the street, with boxes of cheap, old Penguin paperbacks going for as little as 40 pence each. You could easily spend hours looking for a find in Main Point Books. They had a good variety of older books, from collector's items to well-loved classics with creases in the spine. If you spent long enough in here, you'd no doubt walk out with books you hadn't even heard of before. I was only visiting for a short time and I still had a blast raiding through their unusual offerings. One to watch if you're on the lookout for uni material, but equally good if you're looking for some new reading material.
