Lower your expectations, at least don't expect a deal
I think many people on Yelp are fair to bash this event. And I'm grateful for their bashing. It helps me to accept this event for what it is. It is a celebration of eating lobster, not the complete absolute devouring of all things that looks like a lobster in your path, as many have expected of this event.
Would I of the least bit care if it was just mindless devouring of lobsters? Of course not! Bring it on, any day, any where, any time!
But again, this is not that type of event.
After hours of driving to Rockland from Portland, with a few detours along the way, the first thing you need to worry about is parking. Fortunately, we came after the lunch hour madness (4 PM), and we were able to find parking a short few blocks away. There's a 2 hour parking limit, but there's no meter and I didn't see anyone getting ticketed, so I guess they go by the honor system. But the good thing about coming here at 4 PM is there parking restriction is from 9 - 6 PM, so we are basically free and clear to park the whole night.
Upon arriving at the entrance, you are asked to pay $8 admission fee. $8 is not insanely expensive, but lowers the value if you come here strictly for lobsters.
Think of this event as a combination of lobsters and a street carnival. There are tons of food beside lobsters. Lets just cover what I had first:
Fried Oreos - Delcious! Nice pillowy dough with a thin crisp surrounding a soft warm Oreo. A nice appetitizer.
Fried Snickers bar - Damn! Yes, its true, anything fried tastes good. But frying chocolate bar is a little over the top. I liked it, but it was really fulfilling.
Lobster (x1) - After the Snicker bar, I would have pushed it to try to have 2 lobster. And what's the point? I rather feel full after one than sick after two. Coming here w/ 2 other friends is perfect as we split a Triple lobster meal and it came out to $11 per lobster. I know, not as cheap as buying it by the dock, but its consider a deal in NYC if you don't account for the admission fee.
McCafe (free) - its a 4 oz cup, 2 oz of ice, but nothing beats free.
Turkey Drumstick - I didn't have this, but I had it about 10 years ago in Disney World. I was really surprised when they charged my friend only $7 for it. That was how much I paid for a decade ago.
So there's tons of street carnival stuff here, street carnival food, games (water gun to fill and pop a balloon), and rides. It is slightly better than your average street carnvial as there are bungy trampoline and rock climbing wall (win a $100 if you can climb the left side wall). I didn't try either as I'm not quite in shape to do either. Well, I was never really good with the wall anyway.
Seeing how they cook the lobsters is nice. The huge brick surrounded cooker have 5 seperate tanks, each able to cook about 30 or 40 lobsters. You can smell the wonderful lobster aroma just by being near the cooker. I wish some one can formulate an air freshner w/ that aroma...
One of the guys of the event also brings out live lobsters for people to hold and take pictures with. Its pretty cool that they do that. A safe way to play with your food, hehe.
So what do I think about this place? I think its a must-go if you never been. Its fun just to make a trip out of this but really enjoy all the other restaurants that Maine have to offer when you are here. Maine does have other things to see (Acadia NP), but if your trip to Maine is about food, its nice to surround meals after meals of lobsters on your itinerary. It would be nice if the lobster festival have a deal like all you can eat for 1 sit-down session for like $50. Then people that want to OD on lobster can try, w/o breaking the bank for the organizers cause most people won't be able to eat $50 worth of lobsters anyway. But as is, its still fun if you don't expect to inhale lobster after lobster during the event.
