Great shop. Charlie helped me out to get the best surfing experience for myself!

Most helpful shop around! I've made a bunch of purchases from MSU and gotten great advice from their staff with tips like how best to dry my new winter booties. All of the products I have bought there are working out great. Also, great to see Charlie and his crew out in the water tirelessly and cheerfully teaching beginners. My go to shop for all things surf!

I've been a loyal customer of MSU since they first opened on Market Street. The new spot on Free Street is awesome! The staff is great! Helpful, knowledgeable, and happy to answer any questions - even the most technical. The store is very well organized and laid out. Tons of awesome brands and products. I can't say enough good things about Charlie, Christina, and the rest of the crew. If you're board is strapped to you roof 24/7 or you're just looking for an awesome deal on a new Patagonia jacket, check out Maine Surfers Union.

Charlie & Company are professional business owners/operators who care and who are fair, honesty and fun! Charlie walked my partner & I through purchasing new equipment. He taught us where to surf, what to practice and how to handle our gear. The other staff members took the time to show us how to wax & care for our boards. Assisted us in affixing our transportation of gear and boards. They gave us helpful hints for their own instructors lesson availability as well as how to find other outlets to learn. Super kind! Super generous! Best experience. Best surf shop around and we hadn’t previously shooed and inquired at multiple other locales. MSU is the best!

Google
I purchased a board there this past summer and now realize I never left a review. MSU was extremely helpful and friendly through the entire process and even shared tons of information on spots to surf throughout southern Maine. Plus they share a photo of you with your purchase because they appreciate each of their customers. When it comes time to buy another board this will be the shop I get it from.

Google
Great shop, with a great new location. Owner Charlie is a great guy that is happy to help with any needs you may have. Boards in the shop are beautifully crafted in the U.S. built to last, along with all the accessories you may need plus great apparel. Lot of local knowledge here on what types of boards to buy/ride for the conditions around NE.

Support your local surf shop! At this point I have purchased 2 boards and a wetsuit from MSU.  Each transaction has come with extensive product  knowledge, great customer service, and quality goods. Looking forward to buying more boards from the shop in the future.

Yelp
Maine Surfers Union is a good smaller sized shop that I've been to over the years. Each time I've dropped by Charlie and other staff have been helpful and super friendly. In fact, one time I really needed some Futures fins during a swell and couldn't make it to the shop for a while so Charlie offered advice over the phone to decide on my best size and arranged to meet up with me near my local surf break one early morning-how can you beat that for customer service?! When I walk into MSU one thing that pops into my brain is "quality" - good brands and well made products that you may need to pay a little more for at times, but will last. Haven't bought a board here, but am always curious what they have for shapes-they don't offer a huge selection of multiple racks full of boards but I like that they stock USA made quality options and they update on social media board orders arriving to give you a sense of what's available. Also offer some surf books, local coffee and local craft beer to go.

Yelp
A couple things: I am not a surfer and I do not live in Maine. This being said, this store is very cool. It offers a carefully curated selection of items you NEED as a surfer (wax, rashguards, swimsuits, board leashes, etc.) coupled with things that straddle the line between a need and a want (books, beautiful towels, insulated cups, Maine-made backpacks, bags, and wallets to name just a few). Many of the items are USA made and some are even Maine-made and made in Portland. The people working there seemed very knowledgeable about surfing in Maine and worldwide. I was listening to one provide seasonal travel advice for following waves and a budget to another customer. I didn't detect a trace of snark as anyone's questions were being answered, whether of not those questions were surfing-related. Very welcoming and helpful staff and nice selection of goods!

Yelp
Charlie & co are by far the nicest & most knowledgeable surf staff in the area. Both times I have been to this shop they have been attentive and patient. As a new surfer, I have a lot of questions and am seeking to learn. Charlie & co made a point to explain equipment, maintenance, and ways to learn. I am so appreciative & so happy I've found this shop. They have a great Instagram presence. Lots of merch/boards posted frequently there. They sell quick! I will always spend my time and money at Maine Surfers Union going forward. Plus, Charlie has the most contagious laugh! Thank you for rocking & being killer Mainers who treat people right.

Yelp
Such a knowledgeable staff. Very kind and welcoming to a newcomer who wants to get more into surfing.

Yelp
More of a buy some high dollar clothing and camping stuff than a surf shop. Get your wallet ready.

Yelp
Great selection of boards by some of the best shapers in the U.S., including some exceptional local/regional shapers. I've never been to Mollusk Surf Shop on the the West Coast, but I've admired their ethos and their inventory for the last few years. Maine Surfer's Union seems to be cut from the same cloth. This is my favorite surf shop on the East Coast.

Yelp
I was not impressed with my experience at Maine Surfers Union. I am a beginning female surfer who has had the ability to borrow friends' spare boards to learn to surf. I went into maine surfers union to get an idea of the kind of boards for sale and their price range last week and was not greeted with helpfulness or enthusiasm. After explaining to the man at the front desk that I was a beginning surfer, he directed me to a wall of surfboards where another man showed me which were used and which were for sale. That was the end of the interaction and I left the store pretty unenthused. I am writing this review because the next day I went to Black Point Surf Shop in Scarborough, where I explained my situation and was treated very differently. The workers there walked me through all the different boards and the pros/cons of each and even let me take a board out to borrow for the afternoon for no cost! My experience at Maine Sufers Union was not positive at all and I will not be coming back here. As a beginning female surfer I did not feel welcomed into the maine surfing community by this establishment.
