Mainz Cathedral

Wonderful place. Beautiful scenery with one of the best Christmas markets in Germany. Mainz is an amazing city full of many surprises and a lot of history

Beautiful cathedral. Lovely garden area as you come in. I was in a bit of a hurry so I was not able to figure out how to climb the tower but I hope I can come back sometime and try. Crypt was neat to see. Fun murals of gospel scenes above the clerestory level along the nave. Some interesting sid chapels to include one of the more vibrant colored crucifixion paintings I've seen in a cathedral.

Impressive structure! Lots of history in the area yet, unlike other similar cathedral areas in other towns, this one feels lively amd young.. Definitely a different and welcome vibe!

A stunning landmark right at the heart of Mainz! The cathedral is massive and full of history, with its beautiful Romanesque architecture and peaceful atmosphere. Walking inside feels like stepping back in time, with impressive stonework, chapels, and artworks to admire. The surrounding Domplatz adds to the charm, with plenty of cafés and shops around. Definitely a must-visit if you’re in Mainz!

I really like the cathedral — it’s even more beautiful than the one in Speyer. I adore the red stones and the many towers. It’s so happily situated within the rest of the city. I felt very happy in these surroundings.

It's a must visit if you sre in Mainz. Very impressive window glasses taht were built in the 70's. Also the rest of the old quarter is very cute and characteristic. It is worth a visit

The cathedral is a must see place in Mainz. You don’t need a ticket, the visit takes around 15/20 mins and it is definitely worth it. Don’t miss the yard, small but beautiful!

The Mainz Cathedral is absolutely mesmerizing! The moment you step inside, you’re transported to another time. The massive pillars, soaring ceilings, and the way light filters through the stained glass—it’s like walking into a movie scene. Every corner tells a story. Peaceful yet majestic, this place leaves you in awe. If you visit Mainz and miss this cathedral, you’re truly missing out! ⛪✨

Very nice cathedral in the heart of Mainz. If you go during the week, you can enjoy the farmers market. Make sure you check out all the sculpted depictions in the church.

Okay so if you read my travel reviews you'll know I'm a sucker for old cathedrals and churches. They always have amazing antiquities, beautiful art, and in my opinion, give you a sense of the story of a place. This one is no different. I love that it's free to explore, and that despite it being a church, there is actually quite a bit to see. It's very large, has beautiful stained glass, and even a courtyard to explore. Due to the time difference between KC and Germany I ended up getting a facetime call from my toddler while I was here so I popped out about midway through our time here to take a break, so I feel like there might be even more to see than what my time permitted. One extra thing to add that is important is that this is one of few churches I've been to that has public restrooms! I think they cost one or two euro but it was so nice to be able to use them while out and about in Mainz. If you're visiting Mainz this is a must visit - it's cheap, and gives you a really good sense of the history of the place.

This was fun to wander around while visiting the last day of the Christmas Market. The art is strangely dark and sinister. I liked it!

Der Hohe Dom St. Martin zu Mainz, kurz Mainzer Dom, ist die Kathedrale (Bischofskirche) der römisch-katholischen Diözese und einer der drei Kaiserdome im Rheinland - auch die beiden anderen (Speyer, Worms) habe ich in den vergangenen Wochen besucht. Architektonisch findet man romanische, gotische und barocke Elemente. Der Zugang zum Dom befindet sich an einer der Seiten, den muss man erst mal finden. Das Innere ist relativ dunkel (ähnlich Worms) gehalten und im Sommer schön warm. ;) Ein Muss für Mainz und Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Die zahlreichen Modernisierungen und Restaurierungen bis in die Gegenwart machen sich in einem gewissen Stilmix bemerkbar, v.a. in den Figuren und Portalen an den Seiten. Lohnenswert ist auch der großzügig angelegte Kreuzgang, von dem aus man auch (gegen Gebühr) zum Domschatz gelangt.

I actually thought this Cathedral was actually better than the Romerdom in Frankfurt, which is a little surprising considering the Romerdom was where the Holy Roman Emperor was crowned (I believe) after they moved the ceremony out of Aachan. Anyway, this cathedral is much bigger, and somewhat more impressive. Also, it is much easier to actually get a decent photo of it as there is an open plaza to the side and to the front. Like a lot of the cathedrals about the place it also has a crypt, that you can descend into, though parts of it are cut off. I decided not to go into the museum though, namely because if it was anything like the one in Frankfurt, it was simply going to have artifacts that weren't actually in the church. However, like many of the cathedrals, it certainly was impressive.

One of the main attraction in Mainz, the cathedral is beautiful and very peaceful. There is a also a museum to show the riches of the church (no picture allowed in there) There is also market on the weekend (although when I was there, it was closing around 4PM)

What a beautiful Cathedral! An incredible 1,000 years old, and how impressive it is! The inner court yard is beautiful and well kept. The architecture is amazing and the inside is massive.

I really liked this cathedral. It is arguably one of the most impressive cathedrals in all of Germany. It also has a modest museum that features artwork and an exhibit on the laughter of the angels in the artwork. There are tours in English if you are there at the right time, which will help you appreciate this place a lot more. Entrance to the cathedral is free, but the museum is 4.5 Euros for adults. This is a nice way to spend an afternoon, especially if you appreciate architecture and history.

Due to my many travels to Colombia and Panamá I have visited many outstanding cathedrals and religious places. So whenever I´m in Mainz I have to visit the cathedral. In my eyes the most beautiful place you can visit in Mainz. Once inside take your time to checkout all the monuments and paintings. There are lots of them. Go downstairs and visit the little chapel. Take a seat make a prayer and simply relax and soak in the atmosphere. If you go visit on a Tuesday or Friday you might want to take some extra time to visit the local market which is just outside of the cathedral. Buy some fruits, fresh honey (they also have candles made out of honey), spices, etc. or simply enjoy some sweets. If you visit Mainz make sure to visit the Cathedral. Even if you´re not a religious person or a person with different belief. The Cathedral is impressive and well worth a visit or two ;-)
