Nice is the New Star of Southern France

"Candied fruits are a favorite sweet in France, and when you sink your teeth into one, releasing the sticky-sweet goo and biting zest of a preserved clementine, you’ll have a new favorite, too. Henri Auer came to the region in 1820, drawn by the local abundance of fruit that would provide tasty fodder for his sweetshop. In 1890, his son introduced candied fruits, and three generations later, the family is still providing some of the best sweets in Nice. A tempting display of candied chestnuts, chocolates, fruit jellies, and cocoa-dusted nuts, as well as candied fruits, is elegantly lit by a crystal chandelier in the original 19th-century shop."

A place of history — and a soul shaped by sweetness. Maison Auer is one of those places you do not simply enter — you experience it. Founded in 1820, this historic confiserie in the heart of Nice still carries the beauty, craftsmanship and heritage that have shaped it for nearly two centuries. The old photograph of the original boutique struck me immediately. It reflects what this house has always stood for: family, dedication and the art of refined indulgence. And this spirit is still present today — in the warm atmosphere, in the elegance of the rooms and in every carefully arranged display. Maison Auer is renowned for its candied fruits, chocolates, pralines and handcrafted sweets, but what truly sets it apart is the signature behind it. Nothing feels ordinary or interchangeable. Every creation tells a story, and every flavour reveals the experience and sensitivity that have defined this house for generations. For me, Maison Auer is not just a confiserie — it is a cultural treasure. A place where tradition is alive. A place to which one gladly returns. And a place that gives every visit to Nice a special touch. A small journey through time — and a pleasure that stays with you. And to be honest: I truly love it there. Maison Auer was founded in 1820 by Henri Auer, a Swiss confectioner who moved to Nice in search of opportunities. The place has 205 years old, and you can see it. Such a cute place to visit, the dried fruits are a must try when in Nice.

Maison Auer is an incredible chocolatier and such a special stop in Nice. The shop is beautiful and full of charm, and the history of the place makes the experience even better. The staff are very friendly and clearly passionate about their craft, which adds so much to the visit. The chocolates are outstanding, rich, fragrant, and beautifully made. Their candied fruits are amazing as well, and there are plenty of samples so you can try different things before choosing. Everything feels traditional, thoughtful, and very French in the best way. It’s the perfect spot to experience classic sweets in a gorgeous setting. A must-visit if you’re exploring Old Nice or want to bring home something special.

Google
Old chocolate shop which was delightful to walk around. Lots of choices and high quality chocolate to indulge in. The staff are very pleasant and friendly. We sampled the dark covered orange and ginger, which were absolutely delicious! Would definitely recommend and I plan to return on my next visit!

Google
Old shop in the city centre. Chat GPT states that this should be one of the best macarons places in the town, but from our opinion it is very similar to other that we tried. Price of macarons is okay, 2 eur per piece. Other sweets are nice, but for my taste to sweet and no other flavours.

Maison Auer Chocolaterie Confiserie in Nice stands as one of the city's oldest chocolate shops, maintaining its prestigious status since the early 1800s under family ownership. Legend has it that it was a favored spot of Queen Victoria, who even had her own room to indulge in chocolates while awaiting the opera. Don't miss out on their exquisite chocolate almonds; they are simply delicious!

Really good ice cream. I had the vanilla raspberry and litchi one. And bought some Easter chocolate which is beautifully shaped

One of the oldest chocolate shops in Nice. A famous place that’s still owned by the family since the early 1800s. Story goes that it is one of Queen Victoria’s favourite chocolate shop. Must try the chocolate almonds! Delicious!

Yelp
This is a fantastic shop for yourself or great for keepsakes and gifts to friends and coworkers. The chocolates bring a bit of France back home to where you're traveling to. Pricing is reasonable. They're touristy but not price gouging. Customer service is great. Very friendly. Highly recommend. Very tasty selections.

Yelp
The most amazing chocolate shop in Nice. bar none!!! This place has been around a really long time. The chocolate was amazing and the store is quite whimsical in its design and decoration. You should definitely give them a try.

Yelp
Really tasty treats!!!! While some of the preserved fruits may be quite expensive the rest of the shop is appropriately priced. The chocolates and sweets are tasty! My one bit of criticism is that they should offer samples (or at least a sample pack to purchase) so that you can decide which items you want to purchase. The chocolate almonds are the best I've ever had.

Yelp
Beautiful shop! Sweets everywhere! Bought a couple of the candied fruits to taste. Not much of a candied fruit fan but I guess it's good sweet but I don't think I would be eating much of these. The staff here is very sweet lol.

Yelp
The salted caramels are old. If those are old, I can't imagine the chocolate to be any younger. The chocolate is not good at all. It doesn't melt easily in the mouth. See's chocolate (very good and cheap chocolate in the states) has much better chocolate than this place. It's been about 3 months since my trip and the chocolate bars are sitting on my counter. Too embarrassing to give away as souvenirs, too awful to eat. They will probably go into the trash soon. Unfortunately, I couldn't enjoy any chocolate pieces with nuts/fillings/ganache because no one was manning the area. I went in about 20 minutes before closing and the staff were super eager to close up shop and didn't really help anyone. I even lingered around the chocolate pieces so that someone would get the hint. A person came and left the area immediately. Sighs. Since I couldn't taste anything, I minimized my risk and just bought mini chocolate bars (about 15 tiny bars) and the salted caramels (about 12 peices). Once I tasted the caramels, my regret was immediate. Come for the decor, not for the chocolates.

Yelp
Auer's pavé au chocolat is the best chocolate dessert in all of Nice, and the décor of this local institution is not to be missed, particularly at Christmas.

Yelp
This is my favorite confiserie in Nice. Their candied fruit dessert is one of the best I've tasted in the mediterranean region and the middle east. The recipe is a thousand years-old and M. Auer does it best. The fruit is tasty, fresh and not too sweet.

Yelp
The most magnificent chocolate I have ever tasted. Worth the trip to Nice just for these tasty morsels.
