Maison des Ambassadeurs (La Rochelle, Nouvelle Aquitaine) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Steps from La Rochelle’s historic market and a short stroll from the port, Maison des Ambassadeurs is the only high-end hotel in town, though it feels more like the elegant home of an aristocratic French family. For many years, that’s exactly what it was: the upscale abode of the diplomat Albert Bodard, a native of the city who always returned to his favorite residence between stints in Mexico, Iran, Afghanistan, and China. He reportedly loved receiving guests in the elegant salons of this 18th-century house, and the social atmosphere lives on in its lively ground-level bar, where afternoon tea and apéritifs are served all day by a grand stone fireplace and tables spill out onto a pair of sunny poolside courtyards in warmer weather. In homage to Bodard’s heyday, the look is mid-century modern — rooms have parquet floors, leather headboards, vintage lamps, and antique writing desks — with a color palette inspired by the nearby ocean and salt flats, where guests are welcome to venture on the hotel’s e-bikes." - Tablet Hotels

After a 12 hour car journey from the UK, this hotel was wonderful to drive into. Once we drove in to the entrance, we knew we’d hit the jackpot. From the valet to reception to servers to housekeeping, EVERY person went above and beyond. Friendly and welcoming with a definite air that ‘nothing was too much trouble’. The welcome Prosecco was a lovely touch, and after all the driving much appreciated! The breakfast was one of the best we’ve ever had, and we’ve travelled all over the world. Thank you to the management for employing such wonderful people. You have an excellent team of people working for you. Look after them 😊

Centrally located, this luxury boutique hotel did not disappoint. We remain impressed by the staff’s hospitality and efficiency. From the moment Raphaël the doorman greeted us to the speedy check out facilitated by Priscilla at the front desk, every moment surpassed our expectations. A complimentary glass of Champagne was extended as the team worked on accommodating our early arrival. The lobby is elegant and gravitates around a beautiful bar manned by Louis the mixologist whose skills we would later discover during the “aperitif” which we enjoyed in the garden near the heated pool.||Our spacious room was accessible via elevator. It was bright and comfortable offering many amenities including coffee and vanity kits. The room also had a mini-bar which we have come to learn is not standard in French hotels. A valet came around in the afternoon, to ensure we had everything and expediently addressed our need for ice and an iron. Although available, we did not use room service or partake in the breakfast which are both available. Rental bikes are also available.||The 20 minutes walk to the hotel from the train station offers a wonderful glimpse of what La Rochelle has to offer in terms of bistros, cafes, local boutiques and world renowned brands. Worth a stop, the city market is the last milestone before turning into the charming arch street that houses the hotel. A well furnished grocery store is also conveniently located nearby.||We greatly recommend this hotel for a weekend getaway as it hits all the right notes it terms of exclusivity, convenience, hospitality and comfort.

If the walls at Maison des Ambassadeurs could talk, they’d probably greet you in medieval French, offer you a Pineau des Charentes, and point you straight to the bar. Tucked beneath La Rochelle’s ancient stone arcades, this five-star hideaway blends centuries of history with all the comforts of modern luxury and shower facilities so good you might actually look forward to getting out of bed. Each room is like a warm hug from the Charente region, elegant, cosy, and dangerously good at convincing you to extend your stay just one more night. The location? Smack in the middle of town. You’re so central, you could probably wave at passing tourists from your window (not advised, but technically possible). After a busy day of boutique browsing, tower admiring, and heureuse mispronouncing, the lounge is the perfect spot to chill out, ideally with a local drink in hand and no particular plans beyond relaxing in style. Speaking of drinks, the bar serves up regional favourites, some from the Île de Ré and tasty light bites that are far from your average snacks. If you’re in the mood to go full gourmet, the on-site ARCO restaurant delivers on all fronts: local ingredients, creative flair, and dishes that might make you briefly consider a new career in food writing. And the reception team? Absolute stars. Whether you need sightseeing tips, a smooth ride to the airport, or help sorting out a flight hiccup, they’ve got you covered with the calm and grace of seasoned travel agents. So whether you’re here for the architecture, the food, or just a bit of five-star pampering in a safe, scenic city that’s made for strolling, this is the perfect home base for your La Rochelle adventure, with a serious dash of luxury and a generous pour of local charm.||

From our first encounter with the valet staff, who were amazing. Reception staff were attentive, friendly and professional. With the bar area and pool areas looking fabulous.|The down side, we booked a luxury double room, but ended up in a 6 bed family apartment, room 109. No explanation why!|Sounds great, but from the outside it was tiered to say the least. Inside was more of a 3star rated hotel, with the quality of the finish, being very poor. Bulbs not working, windows that didn’t look, is not what you expect in a 5x establishment.|Very sad to say the least. That said, hotel won’t be too bothered, as we are guests just passing through.|Lastly, no Wifi in the room. We were told it didn’t connect that far!|Fabulous 5X experience in La Rochelle.|Please don’t book!

Very well put together even for such an old building. Champagne was offered immediately after check in which was something I never experienced before and was a nice touch. My request of a high floor during booking was honored and much appreciated. The bed I had was very comfortable especially the pillows and beats out any Marriott Bonvoy branded pillow. The staff were really great to me during my stay and quite accommodating. The courtyard is also really nice to relax in especially late at night when you have it all to yourself, especially with a drink. There is also absolutely no noise to bother you at all while you try to sleep which was quite amazing. Thanks for an amazing stay and if by chance I’m ever in your town again I will definitely book again with this property.

We stayed here for 2 nights with our teenage children. The hotel is definitely more suited towards adults however our children were made very welcome and we were all very comfortable.|The room was fantastic - mini fridge, coffee machine, complimentary water, lovely toiletries. We liked the fact the children had their own space in the lounge to sleep. The shower worked perfectly and for once it was lovely to see a hotel providing enough towels on a family room!|Location couldn’t be better! On a quiet street with lovely boutiques but just a 2 minute walk to the local food market. We didnt breakfast as we chose to visit the bakeries! |All the staff we encountered were helpful and friendly. It was lovely to be welcomed after our flight with a glass of champagne!|Pool is small but perfect for a dip and the area around it is a lovely peaceful haven. Spa area lovely too.|I would love to return to this hotel.

A lovely hotel with very friendly and efficient staff. A good location in the old town with valet parking and a very welcoming glass of fizz on arrival. We treated ourselves to a massage in the Spa. One of the best we have had - Chris is a real expert with a variety of techniques. We were there during a very hot spell, so the air conditioning and pool were wonderful. Will certainly stay again.

What a fabulous hotel in the centre of beautiful La Rochelle. The rooms were excellent and the standard of the hotel was exceptional. Friendly and helpful staff. Can thoroughly recommend. In fact I’d like to go back right now! Great location for wandering into La Rochelle and a good choice of eateries nearby. The restaurant at the hotel is amazing.
