Even if you arrive 15 minutes before opening, you're likely to see a line, as we did on our first visit. That'll definitely get the juices flowing, as well the signage and the impressive array of breads and pastries (boulangerie and patisserie, if you will) in the display cases. Anticipation ran so high that we ordered 9 different items.
Chocolate Croissant: I've been on a chocolate croissant search that's taking me to the better places in Boston, the Boston neighboring cities and suburbs, and the more food-centric cities in Maine. I have my favorites and was expecting Maison Villatte to join them, but the croissants not only fell short but were downright disappointing. Room temperature, zero crackle, no fluffiness (texture pretty much identical to a Starbucks croissant), decent enough buttery flavor, and only a tease of chocolate.
Brownie: Much like my family, large and round, with nuts included. Moist but not fudgy. More of a subtle, subdued chocolate flavor, better as an accompaniment to coffee than something a kid would enjoy.
Coffee Eclair: Impressive presentation with the coffee colored frosting, the espresso bean as garnish, and individual box. Soft, fresh, and dark mocha filling inside. Nice surprise.
Tarts: We tried four, and these were the highlight of the visit. Lemon merengue was sweet and heavy and light and refreshing all at the same time, with a nice buttery crust to the "cup." Caramel pear tart had unimpressive soggy pear slices all clumped together, but the caramel was tasty and the crust was darker and tastier than the lemon's. Mixed berry looked better than it tasted, but was nice. Chocolate had rich decadence that made up for the brownie, though a little reminiscent of Hershey's syrup. Had cold the next day it exhibited more body.
Bread: "Cereale" Sourdough crusty outside, fluffy inside, and delicious everywhere.
Pricing surprisingly reasonable for the quality/ambitiousness of the items. Overall, a fine bakery, better than average for sure, but for me not the elite everyone seems to think they are. I wonder if the ratings are inflated by tourists who are in a good mood and happy just to have these items with no benchmarks.
If I could get in and out in 15 minutes I'd be back again in a heartbeat. But since the actual investment is going to be closer to an hour if not more (it was over an hour this time), the quality just isn't in line with the hassle.
