On the Grid : Maiwa Handprints

"Natural fiber and color yarn mecca Maiwa (loosely meaning “the language of art” in Mandarin) offers natural and ethically sourced supplies for your next creation. Don’t be mistaken, this is not to be called a yarn shop, Maiwa is the number one supplier of natural dye supplies in North America. This family-run business has visited India over 70 times in the past 22 years visiting villages to build intimate relationships with artisans and their sources. Hand-carved block printing stamps, 100% organic cotton, sewing tools, hand-dyed fabric and even obscure Japanese tools for Japanese silk painting stock the shelves and tables of this tiny shop. No time to express your inner creative, twin store in the Net Loft offers the most stunning rugs, blanket scarves and bed linens, all of course, made by hand. Sign up to participate in their monthly Indigo social events to learn about color and fiber, play and get to know other creatives over a beer." - Arithmetic Creative

It was a nice quirky shop. Woth a lot of nicely handmade objects from india. Steeply priced. But i hope that the profits go to the poor women who made them. The lady running the shop told me that she has been in this buisness for 37 years. That's brilliant. But she was ignorant of the real sandhill names of many artifacts there. Even the very popular embroidery stitches displayed at the shop, the lady did not know their original names. It was a shame

This was my first time in the store. It is very beautiful inside and has many supplies for crochet, knitting, embroidery, needle punching, craft books and of course a plethora of fabric dye supplies and resources. I was initially interested in just the yarn section but the dyed fabrics are quite impressive and grab your attention as you walk in. The prices are on the expensive side keeping in mind the ethics and sourcing of the materials is very high quality and responsible. I was greeted right away and welcomed into the store. They were helpful with the garments and informed about the sizing being bigger than most brands. I wish I could have spent more time because there were so many things to look at. Whether you are an active crafter/maker or casually browsing you’ll be sure to find some gems in this store!

Though I love the products at this store, I found the staff to be less than eager to help. It felt like I was inconveniencing them by asking questions. Then, I had to drive all the back to the store, in traffic, because the kit I was sold was missing an ingredient in it. I barely got an apology and the suggestion of a discount for the inconvenience was scoffed at… I spent $150 at the store.

My sister in law took me to this store! They have a great collection of natural dyes and fabric! They carry a lot of artsy things! The lady at the store was very welcoming and warm! We had a great time looking around and sifting through the things here! They also carry scarves and I absolutely loved their scarf collection! If you're in the area, pop by! It won't disappoint you!

It was wonderful time to visit here. I bought several unique crochet hooks and a lovely knitting book. Happy to find this shop.

A beautiful store with gorgeous natural fabrics, many sourced from originating cultures. Quality is pricey - and absolutely worth it.

Such an amazingly FULL shop with so much to spark ideas and all the supplies to bring them to life. The folks working were patient, enthusiastic, helpful. It felt like an escape from the hectic bustle on Granville. Will hopefully take a class or workshop there one day.

This store is just fabulous! I popped in today for the first time to pick up some embroidery thread to repair a couple of items. I was blown away by the quality of all the hand-made clothes, accessories and home decor items on all the walls. They have brilliant choices of threads, fabrics and accoutrements for sewing and crafting, all very reasonably priced, as well as some fantastic natural dyes, and books on all related crafty topics (I picked one up all about sashiko to help me make my repairs!). The staff were wonderful: friendly, helpful, but let me wander for ages so I could make thoughtful purchases. Being in this shop lifted my soul: that sounds a bit dramatic, but in this extractive world of fast-fashion, over-consumption and waste, this felt like stepping back in time - or to a more hopeful future, where we as a society care about the planet and it's resources, and live a slower way of life that prizes quality, reusability and circularity. I will be saving up to buy some of the clothing items, and will definitely come back here whenever I need thread, fabric or other crafty supplies :) Please keep doing what you're doing, Maiwa!
