5 International Foods to Eat in Toronto, Canada - AFAR

"A family-run deli, shop, and casual eatery serving Toronto’s Eastern European community for over two decades; come for grilled cevapi with lepina, kajmak, chopped onion, and sometimes ajvar, and expect a welcoming, unifying atmosphere with the option to dine at small in-store tables or take away." - Heather Greenwood Davis

There is small dining area in this store that serves delicious balkan foods including Burak and cevape. The staff are nice and friendly and the atmosphere is cool for a quick meal. They also have very tasty pastries (next to cash), so make sure to pick up dessert on your way out.

Staff were friendly, burek is fresh/warm/flaky/savoury/delicious, and the combo plate with 2 different sausages was amazing (I like the small cevapi sausage more than the longer smoked veal sausage)

Food and service was great. My friend and I ordered the 10 piece cevapi and they heard us mention that we were sharing. When our food came, they had split everything in half on separate plates without us asking. That was a very nice gesture and I’ve never had that experience before. We also spoke with another customer who mentioned that he goes regularly which I think speaks a lot about the place given they have regular customers. The cevapi was very delicious and I have been thinking about it the last few days.

I've been enjoying food at this European market for a while now, and I have to say—it's fantastic! Their daily made food are wholesome and always fresh and their Cevapi and Burek are incredibly tasty and addictive. I find myself craving them often! On top of the delicious food, the owner and staff are absolutely wonderful—always friendly, welcoming, and helpful. Highly recommended!

My first experience with Balkan-style meat was at a family friend's wedding, when I asked: "What is this delicious meat?" And the answer was: "Ćevapčići" (minced meat kebabs). When I discovered MAK European Delicatessen, this became my go-to place for: tasty meat (ćevapi, pljeskavica, sudžukice), kajmak (Balkan cream cheese), burek (filo pies stuffed with meat, cheese or spinach), ajvar (roasted red peppers sauce), and mineral waters of the former Yugoslavia... even after moving away from the neighbourhood. While revisiting the neighbourhood recently, it was a joy to stop in for a burek and re-live the old sights, sounds and aromas of the delicatessen and grill. I enjoyed the meat burek (beef). The meaty filling had a judicious amount of onion and spice, though the filo pastry was a bit soft (I like the exterior a bit more crunchy). Pleasantly filling. All in all, a really tasty burek. The interior dining area was more colourful and vibrant than I had remembered it - happy to see that the present is even better than the nostalgic past. MAK European Delicatessens is probably the best Balkan deli in the eastern part of Toronto - great selection of Balkan meats, sweets and treats to be had. With a bottle of Pelisterka / Пелистерка mineral water in hand, it was time to continue my journey.

Google
Amazing amazing amazing. Was recommended to try the cevapi and it did not disappoint. I tried the Cevapi/Sudjukice combo and a Beef Burek. Delicious! Will definitely be back and next time do a little shopping in the store and stock up some cevapi to make at home.

Google
Really nice European Supermarket that carries some nice unique items and most importantly their famous Cevapi. You can also grab fresh prepared food here as well.

Yelp
This place is a goldmine for European treats. They have a lot of snacks and grocery items you can't find at regular grocery items. They also have Burek that are fabulous. Meat or cheese and you can even get them frozen to cook at home. I haven't tried doing it at home yet but I love that it's an option. I love their Motzart marzipan treats from Europe. I've never seen them elsewhere. I tried their goulash meal and was disappointed. There wasn't a lot of meat and the noodles were super salty. I think I'll try their sausages next, I like that they have different specials every day. I feel like the food is very fresh because of it.

Yelp
I'm always up for trying something new, so when Mak European Deli was suggested for lunch, I was totally on board. It's an interesting layout; you walk in and the place looks like a pretty common deli with a takeout counter, but as you go further, there's a small restaurant section in the back. We decided to try the burek, and based on the assumption that it would be bagel sized, we ordered the spinach and meat variations. They were not bagel sized. They were, in fact, football sized. Both bureks were surprisingly tasty, so the enormity of the portion wasn't a problem, ultimately. They tasted fresh and the filling inside both was quite delicious. And it's so rich. To say we were full afterwards would be quite an understatement. The total cost for each of these mammoth pastries? $5.99! What a steal.

Yelp
Review for their cakes only!!! Anyhow. I bought 6 types of Eastern European pastries (no tax). The refrigerated display case is located near the cash register; it had 2-4 pieces of each type of pastries that visually may suggest that the pastries may be stale/leftovers or sitting for long. Well, I don't think like that (benefit of the doubt) and may not be necessarily the case. I bought 6 anyhow to try. I have not been in this place before but got swayed by the good Yelp reviews. Verdict: The pastries were not good and quite expensive for their poor quality. It had a sign on the fridge that they were delivered by Joseph's Bakery. However, if you really are hungry, they will do.

Yelp
I've come here a couple times for lunch. You can usually find a seat for lunch. This place is connected to a grocery store so you can do grocery shopping while you wait for your order. I typically get the same thing (Cevapi). Hot sausage with a creamy cheese (Kaymak) that just melts as you drizzle it on. It is enjoyed best when fresh and hot so I'd recommend eating in. This was a great Eastern European culinary experience

Yelp
Great hole-in-the-wall deli. I had to head up the DVP the other day, and traffic was bad, so decided to zip over to Vic Park. On the way, I saw "European Deli" with a sign for "burek" in the window. I know Burek as Borek, which is a common dish in Turkey. I had a meat burek, which is kind of like a coil of sausage wrapped in an oily dough. Yummy! There's also a large selection of what I believe are Macedonian / Balkan products and a dining area in the back. They also have a big selection of porky items: sausages, bacons, smoked meats, etc. Well worth a stop for a break if you need to make the journey up to the 401.

Yelp
Yummmm for grilled mince meat sausages. When you first walk in to Maks, it is a small grocery store, with some dried goods and a largish deli counter with a few fridges/freezers. Now, what you really want to do, is make your way to the back of this deli and find the small sit down area, the flat top grill is sizzling away. I think the place only seats about maybe 15 customers at a time, but they do take out, so no worries there. If you're coming here to grab a hot meal - you should be here for the Cevappi, which are a ground meat sausages made with veal, lamb and pork. The sausages come in 5 or 10 sausage on a bun, with cream cheese spooned over the sausages, so the cream cheese is softly melting over them and with a side of chopped red onions. Price wise look for it to top out around $12 for the 10 pieces of Cevappi on a bun with the "fixins", one you start eating these, they are seasoned and I normally don't like lamb, but because of the mix of meat I am unable to detect the lamb from the other meats, which can be a good thing, if you're like me and don't like how grassy Lamb tastes. I wouldn't look too much in terms of customer service, but you walk up to the cash register after you finish eating and pay, there is a fridge for drinks, if you are eating for here, and you just grab your drink and settle up the bill after you finish eating. Overall, this place isn't bad for grabbing a quick bite with no expectations for service. I'll probably stop by here, if I am in the area.

Yelp
Small. Very Eastern Europe, the real deal. Deli store and almost hidden area for sit down comrad eating. It's anti hipster. Love it. Roast beef sandwich is spectacular. Will come again. Decor like an old Montreal convenience store.

Yelp
Some real comfort food for me I loved the 5 piece Kabapi with some onions and bread was delicious!! The cheese masnik was also amazing just like my wonderful baba used to make back in the day. Service and staff are super friendly and very nice people u will feel right at home. And instead of going to the danforth and supporting the greeks let's support more Macedonian run places and show ppl we have some amazing food too!!!

Yelp
For anyone who may be feeling like they're in a rut of eating the usual burger and fries, the 5pc cevapi (like a more flavourful cheeseburger) and potato burek from the take-out section at the back of this deli made for a really nice change of pace. They were $6.99 a piece, but the portions were enough for two meals. Have been driving by this place for years, and just got in the mood today to try something new. Wish I'd been feeling more adventurous a lot sooner - the food was delicious! Would have liked to have tried some Balkan soup if there had been any available. From the pictures on the menu it looks like they may have had some in the past, at some point?

Yelp
I drive down from Newmarket at least twice a month to pick up a box of fresh lamb/beef cevapi and a jar of adjvar. Put em on the BBQ for 15 mins and they are delicious. Come on people if you havent' had authentic Macedonian cuisine you got to try this place.

Yelp
I've had a few dishes here but the Cevappi is by far my favourite. If you're looking for an inexpensive, tasty and filling meal, check this place out. It's no fine dining but the food is delicious!

Yelp
This a small Bosnian delicatessen that also has a fast food sections that prepares their authentic ćevaps (minced meat sausages) and hamburgers. Everything in this place is as authentic as you can get. They make their own meats that you can buy fresh or frozen to BBQ at home. They even have authentic desserts that are rare to find anywhere else in the city. The owner is usually there and the most friendly. Thank you.
