Makapipi Falls is one of the many stunning waterfalls along the Road to Hana on Maui’s northeastern coastline. It’s located near mile marker 25 on the Hana Highway (Hwy 360) and is a beautiful but often overlooked stop.
Key Features of Makapipi Falls:
Unique Perspective: What makes Makapipi Falls special is the vantage point. Unlike many other waterfalls on the Road to Hana, where you view the falls from the base, Makapipi Falls is viewed from above. The waterfall flows underneath the bridge you’ll be driving on, and from this position, you can look down into a pool below where the water cascades over a lava rock ledge.
Height: The waterfall is around 30–40 feet in height, making it a medium-sized waterfall compared to others in the area. It flows into a serene pool surrounded by lush greenery.
Accessibility:
Location: Makapipi Falls is located near mile marker 25 on the Hana Highway, shortly after the Nahiku Road turnoff and before you reach the small town of Hana. Since the falls are right under the bridge, it’s an easy stop on the roadside.
Parking: There’s no designated parking lot for Makapipi Falls, but there is enough space near the bridge to pull over briefly. Be careful of traffic, as the Hana Highway is narrow and winding.
Viewing Point: The best view is from the bridge itself, where you can safely stand and look down into the pool. You’ll get a direct view of the waterfall spilling over the ledge into the pool below.
