Makapuu Beach Park

One of my favorite beaches when we visited. Scenic, and the water is crystal clear. I could sit here for hours just admiring the view.

Nice spot. Water is clean. Scenery is amazing. Make sure to bring your umbrella as it can get get really hot. Plenty of parking spot. Only thing is bathroom is filthy!

A very powerful wave best enjoyed by those accustomed to such a surf from a young age. Boogie boarding is a thing here. Beach sand good for sunbathing, though the rays here are also strong. Lighthouse view in the distance makes for a scenic vista.

I had never stopped until today! Its an absolutely gorgeous white sand beach with sparkling clear water. The sun shining made it only look better 🌞 Its one of my favorite areas of the island

A stunning beach with Awesome Views, However if your going to swim there be Careful with the waves they have crazy shore break and they can really hurt someone. Other than that it’s a great looking beach also it has a area on the left where you can walk on this black rock but make sure to bring Sandals or water shoes for that and don’t fall or slip.

Beautiful scenic spot that’s not very crowded, with accessible bathrooms and an outdoor shower.

Loved this beach! Great for body surfing if your not much of a swimmer. Lots of sun, perfect for sunbathing or bring an umbrella of you want some shade. There's a bathroom and outdoor shower for rinsing.

Ok, big waves in August! They definitely crash hard and pull you back in so don’t go in if you’re not used to that especially if the warning signs are up! But it’s super fun to just sit and watch body boarders enjoy the big waves :) Views are gorgeous. Never had problem finding parking. Lifeguards on watch during the day.

Passed by this beach while on tour! It was the location of Adam Sandler's character work place in the movie 50 FIRST DATES!

Makapu'u is one of my favorite beaches on this island. I always come here when I visit Oahu. It's just so beautiful. They have restrooms and showers as well. The beach is amazing but I usually hang around the other side where the rocks are. It's such a cool place just to chill and "get lost". The parking lot is pretty tiny though so you gotta get here early. I believe there is another parking lot further down. Can't wait to be back..........

This place is for sure the spot to go if you don't want to deal with all the overcrowded beaches. This is more of a locals spot which is exactly what we wanted. It's so beautiful and peaceful and the water is stunningly blue! If you're in Waikiki and need to get away from all the tourists this is the spot. I wish I was staying longer because I'd for sure come here again!!

Located off Kalanianaole Hwy, Waimanalo. This is the spot where most people stop for a pic of Rabbit Island. Overall a great place and spot to get pictures of Rabbit Island.

So we've been looking down at this beach for years now from the Lighthouse Trail and finally went today. Wow the water is beautiful!!! The waves were a bit rough today but their was an area where there was a small tide pool that allowed kids the safety to just splash and have a good time. Plenty of sun to tan or some shade in the afternoon by the tree-line for those not looking to burn. Parking is limited in the parking lot so some park along the road and hike down. There is a lifeguard that is on duty and will post signage. Just keep an eye out for when they leave so you know that you are swimming at your own risk.

Beautiful view and a secluded beach! Unfortunately we chose a chilly, rainy day to drive around Oahu. By the time we reached Makapu'u beach, we were not up for swimming. The beach is easy to access and parking is available. We would have stayed longer if it was a nicer day. Nonetheless, we enjoyed our short stop and loved the views!

This is one of my happy places. I used to come here when I was younger to ride waves and I still do to this day. It is a nice little beach with waves close to the shore, and it has a nice sandy bottom. There are lifeguards, a small parking lot, outdoor showers to rinse the sand off and bathrooms. There usually seems to be a cool good natured crowd every time I come. 5 stars.

The view is absolutely beautiful!!! One can climb the trail, go to the beach, or enjoy the view from the scenic lookout point above the beach.

This beach is best for experience body boarding. My family came here numerous time on our visit to Oahu. We love body boarding back home and we love it more in Hawaii. Waves are huge so be careful if your a beginner. Waves are big and strong. Can't beat the view either. Walking down to the area isn't bad, recommend to wear shoes because there are a small rocks. It's also great to just tan and chill. Love it here.

Drive a little north west from Makapuu Beach Park, (right across from sea life park Hawaii), and make a right to park into a little parking space to get to "Baby Makapuu Tide Pools." Park your car (be sure to leave before the posted times, so you're not trapped in the parking lot when they close, which is usually at sunset). This place is perfect to take your babies because the tide pools are super nice for them to swim and play in! No waves because the rocks break them before getting to the tide pools, especially during low tide. There's a water hose to wash your kiddos too after fun beach play. You'll take some beyond beautiful pictures of your kids in these tide pools with a gorgeous backdrop of Rabbit island. Bring some towels, change of clothes, beach blanket, umbrella/tent, snacks/drinks, sand toys, fish nets for toddlers, floaties for the babies, sunblock... and you're set for the perfect beach day getaway!

It was here that I could feel how important surfing is to the local culture. Like watching kids run on to a baseball field, I sat on the beach and saw young ones eagerly run into the ocean toward the magnetically crashing waves. If I had attempted to do the same, these waters would have crushed and carried me away never to be seen again. However, under the watchful eyes of adults standing on the shore, I was amazed at how children joyfully took to the turbulence like it was nature's playground equipment.

The best place to boogie boards and snorkeling. The Tide pools are easy enough for children to play in. The water is so clear I love hanging out here with family and friends catching the sunset.

Best kept secret on the east side of Oahu. No one here except people who kind of lost and stumbled here by accident

This beach was absolutely gorgeous! We stopped in after completing the Makapu'u Point Lighthouse Trail. We changed into our swim suits in the restrooms (most didn't have TP or working latches on the doors in the ladies bathroom). The day we went there was an extremely heavy surf and the red flags were out due to dangerous riptides. We set up our beach chairs and sand umbrella and the lifeguard came over to talk to us to ask if we were planning on going into the water. He recommended not going in over your mid calf area. We mostly just enjoyed the view and dipping our toes in briefly. We did enjoy watching some experienced young men boogie boarding!

I am always looking for cool places for photos and found this neat little spot quick run down: Pros: Lots of parking spaces Nice views of ocean and photos Lots of paved areas for walking and taking photos Some weird and cool little structures that you don't see almost if the time The bathrooms had showers and changing areas Cons: Bathrooms had no toilet paper, a broken door, and no working latches

I always whiz past this beach so I decided to intentionally just go here last week. It's easy to miss coming down the cliffy road with traffic just before the sea life park. It's just breathtakingly gorgeous. Lush green grounds, Cliffs of Makapuu lighthouse in one direction, Majestic Koolau behind you, Rabbit Island and an awesome shorebreak in front of you and the Turquoise waters of Waimanalo extending north. Pretty in every direction. Strong Waves and currents though. I wouldn't bring little children to wade in the water. The life guard was announcing warning every 15 minutes. Parking is very limited and tight which is good cause it keeps the crowds down. There a dirt lots which I would say is only good with a SUV. Shower and Bathroom facilities on site. Lots of Body Surfing on the left side, most of the swimmers stayed on the center right of the beach as per direction of the lifeguard.

My last stop to the Makapu'u area of Oahu on the east side of Oahu is here at the Makapu'u Beach Park. It was spur of the moment decision on a March 2020 afternoon (Saturday). I had brought lunch at Ala Moana shopping center and decided to head out east to eat it. I hardly am on this side of the island when I am not traveling, but when I do, I enjoy coming to this side of the island. It's quite secluded, but far enough away to enjoy yourself from Waikiki. I decided to do some social distancing on the east side of the island while exploring a new part of the island. Makapu'u Beach Park is a small beach that can be called a hidden gem, much like Kailua Beach Park. You can see two islands off shore while relaxing ad wasting the day and de-stressing yourself from the world's problems. All beaches are scenic, serene, and beautiful. Makapu'u Beach park is no different, other than its location. It was nice to be out here, although there was a few people out here along with a highway full of parked cars along the shoulder. I spent about 1 1/2 hours here having my (late lunch) here, relaxing, and having the ocean help me with life and it's meaning of it. Having the ocean and nature sort out your problems is pretty nice and it helps your mental health in the long run - much like physical exercise too. The fresh air and the change of scenery did me a lot of good. Sometimes, it's like that. Experiencing the nature all around us helps us spiritually and keeps our minds and soul healthy. My time here at Makapu'u Beach park was enjoyable and hope to be back here sometime soon. The overall experience here at Makapu'u Beach Park was very nice and theraputic in many ways. The beach park is quite small, but there are restroom facilities here, as well as picnic tables for anyone and everyone to sit down and enjoy. You can even have parties here, but try not go overboard with it and you must pick up after yourself.. It was cool that they had picnic tables here, so I can enjoy my late lunch here. The rumbling of the ocean waves was enjoyable and the whistling wind helped me focus on what was important of the day. The calm helped me see what was bothering me. Nature proves that it can help what's bothering you at any given time of the day. During my time here at Makapu'u Beach park, I found myself walking around for a bit near the water's edge after finishing lunch, reflecting on my life and how this pandemic has affected me and the world in 2020. The beach park itself is quite clean and maintained. Not sure how often they empty those trash bins, but it was plenty full when I was there in the late afternoon. Makapu'u is a great area that's away from urban Honolulu. I had a nice quiet time here, enjoying Mother Nature's creation. If you're in the area, consider coming here for a change of pace. Slowly wind down and enjoy the waves. It's a hidden gem that's not far from Haunama Bay, which also enlightened my mood and outlook on life. Makapu'u Beach Park, like all community parks, is absolutely free. No money needed to enter and enjoy this scenic oasis. Best bet would be to come here early enough to beat the morning sun. I hope that viewing the sunrise would be spectacular, although fa return trip would be warranted at some point or another, if I am near the area. There's a generous, but limited helping of parking here, but you'd want to come here before it gets wicked crowded. If you are like me, only 2 routes that come to mind that pass through the area, namely route 22 and 23 from Kahala Mall area. You can also ride route 67 and 69 from Kailua / Kaneohe area and stop at Sea Life Park, but you'd have to get to the area. For the most part though, it is nice to be here, even if it was for 2 hours or so. Make the best of a challenging situation. You'll be happy you came here. It's one of Oahu's best kept secrets. I should come out here more often. It's about 2 hours from Ala Moana and about 45 minutes from Kahala Mall - if you're riding the bus. 5.0 stars for the overall experience. Support local! A+

We are so blessed to be living on an island in the middle of the Pacific that has so many beautiful beaches! Besides being a beautiful beach, Makapu'u has a lighthouse that is still operational to this day. Construction began in the late 1800's and was completed around 1910. It is located on the Southeastern tip of Oahu and in its day during the time of steamships and schooners, guided ships away from this rugged coastline on their way to Honolulu Harbor. There is a popular hiking trail that is located before the beach park. There can be many faces to Makapu'u beach, depending on the currents, surf and tides, sand can shift away from the beach leaving a jagged landscape that is not usually seen. So for us folks who have seen this, we all know what lurks just under that beautiful white sand beach. This area is also very popular with body surfers as well, waves can be treacherous and large with strong rip currents moving out to sea. During these times, it's best left to the pros. Enjoy the beach and it's beauty, but always be aware of your surroundings and the ocean. *RESPECT THE CULTURE AND THE LAND* Five Stars * * * * *

Beautiful beach, super clean, very scenic, but nothing crazy (unless you're paragliding). No need for tickets or reservations. Life guards on duty, bathrooms and parking available.

One of the most breathtaking beaches I've ever seen. When you come around the mountain on the freeway the beach looks surreal. Huge lush green mountains overlook and turquoise blue waters on your right. The cove has some of the strongest waves I've felt on the island. The water was warm and I had a blast swimming in the waves. It's simply one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen. P.s. If you aren't a confident ocean swimmer approach the waters cautiously. The currents are VERY strong!

Honestly one of the best hiking trails here on Oahu for those visiting island and aren't accustomed to heavy physical activity, because Diamond head and KoKo Head (especially KoKohead) can be quite difficult for those who aren't used to this kind of activity. It's paved almost through the entirety. Amazing views and pet friendly. Parking is difficult as it usually is here but overall a great place to see! Make sure you bring proper shoes because even though it is paves there is a good incline to it and slippers just won't cut it... maybe Crocs in sports mode!

BOOGIE BOARDERS' PARADISE! A hidden gem on East Oahu, close to Sea Life Park, south of Waimanalo, hidden from the highway. Yes, Makapu'u Beach Park is one of our favorite beaches on Oahu for several reasons (August 2018): 1.) Great SUMMER action waves for boogie boarding (when facing the ocean go towards the middle/left side). It's less dangerous and better shore break than Sandy's Beach (which is heck a dangerous!) 2.) Great body surfing 3.) Great waves for hanging in the water and cooling down- go to the right side. No swimming on the left side - as it is dangerous, riptides, corals. 4.) There is a lifeguard on duty. 5.) There is police periodic presence and monitoring in the parking lot. 6.) There is parking available in a parking lot. People coming and going can open parking spots up. (But the parking lot is small, very limited and can be very competitive. Highway parking is very dangerous.) 7.) There are clean restrooms and outside showers available 8.) it is the most gorgeous scenery of the ocean, mountains, view of the lighthouse, and para-gliders. 9.) It doesn't get too crowded as it is a small beach area (and again limited by the amount of parking). Tip: Be respectful of the locals. Tip: Bring beach tent as there is little shade and it's breezy. It can get very hot. Even when it is cloudy, you still can get sunburned. Tip: be careful with young children- there is NO playground and the waters can be extremely dangerous. Check with the lifeguard. Tip: When you get hungry there is a great, local business close by in Waimanalo called Ono's Steaks and Seafood. Loved it! Watch their video on their Yelp site. Support local business and enjoy fresh local (Waimanalo) fish. Aloha & Mahalo!

S many great memories here. From renewing our vows 10yrs ago to playing and to taking maternity photos with our family. The views are beautiful but be cared not to wander off to far, there are dangerous waves down by the reef and can take you by surprise. It's a good place to meditate if you find a good and safe spot.

Really a solid, smaller playground. Our 4 and 2 year old boys both love it. Recycled rubber surface is spongy and soft. 6p on a Thursday and the two basketball courts are empty and only 2 other keiki on the playground. Great for some low anxiety playtime.

Not sure why this place is rated so highly- it's a pretty straight walk up a steady incline to the viewing area, which tends to be packed with tourists and offers just okay views. Rated as an easy on Alltrails and everywhere else but honestly the walk from the parking lot was sort of a trek in itself

Great park on the coast of Oahu! Love it for a sunrise . Absolutely gorgeous view and peaceful experience. Great for picnic or just a beautiful beach day. Pack a meal and stay a while!

Right off he road with plenty of parking. Water is 100ft away. Not for swimming, but perfect for photos and just breathing that Hawaiian ocean breeze.

They added a new playground area! a little bit dangerous for toddlers though...more for older kids but nice.

Awesome beach! This is one my my favorite beaches in Oahu. The water is usually clear and the views are picturesque. The is a beautiful lighthouse and a few small island to check out. There are usually a lot of surfers, body boarders and some times sky divers to watch. The waves and current here are strong most of the time. Lifeguards are present often, but this beach is not for weak swimmers. The sand is soft and goes out all the way into the water. Beautiful views and hikes near by, an aquarium is right across the street as well. Showers, changing rooms, bathrooms, and water fountains are near the parking lot.

This is practically a secret park! It's brand spanking new and so far we haven't seen much action over there. We really love this playground, but wish we could make more friends here!!
