Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse Trail

Go anytime, but sunrise and sun set must be especially spectacular. Open from 7:45 am to 7:45 the parking area can be crowded but there also is shoulder parking on the road. We took Uber and would recommend you book a return trip as you start your way down. Data service in the parking lot is iffy but improves greatly as you move up and around the hill. The first stretch of this side pave trail is the steepest After this first stretch there start to be stopping points with historical data and places to sit with multiple switchbacks. Some great views and potential whale watching. Lots of bird life. There are NO PUBLiC BATHROOMS, which is really the only downside. If your kids are not used to outdoor climbs create the expectation before going as we saw some kids under 10 that were not happy trekkers. We also saw many more that were enjoy themselves and the views. If you are into lighthouses this on has a lens style that was only ever used in this lighthouse Looks really cool

Well, there’s definitely a mushy if you’re coming down this side of the island. You’re not able to get to the lighthouse, but the views of the surrounding area are absolutely fantastic. From the Lookout point you can even at times he whales swimming through the area. It’s just a gorgeous place. Well, worth your time and effort to stop. If you’re gonna hike all the way to the lighthouse, make sure you bring water and something to cover your head. It’s a solid 35 minute walk.

The paved path absolutely makes this trek much more doable, but it is a steady and long 1.2 mile incline to get to the very top. There are a few stops along the way where you can rest should you need to. The views are spectacular along the way and even more so at the peak.

We missed the sunrise, but arriving at 7:00 AM was perfect! The free parking lot opened right on time, and there were plenty of spots available. The trail is fully paved and easy to navigate, though it is quite an incline. Even without the sunrise, the morning light over the turquoise water and the views of the lighthouse were stunning. A great way to start the day before it gets too hot!

This was one of our stops on our Oahu drive around the island, so we didn’t necessarily allot the time for this walk but we’re glad we did! We spent about 1.5 hours at this location. It’s an all uphill paved 1-mile-ish trek to the viewpoint to be able to see the lighthouse. It was worth it! Along the way, we saw lots of whales in the distance and there are plenty of places to sit and catch your breath. But, definitely there is no shade so wear sunscreen and bring water!

It was a flat and slightly inclined road up to the lighthouse station. On many sections, the wind was quite strong and made it difficult to see face the wind. Nonetheless, the view up was plentiful with so many vantage points. There were signs of whales, but we didn't get to catch any There is also a pillbox in the middle on one of the off-roads. This trail connects to the beach side for a view from below.

Super hot even in December, beautiful views at the top. Totally worth it. Strongly recommend wearing sunscreen or sun shirt. View of lighthouse was cool but the view of the beach down below was truly gorgeous, unexpected! During the walk you can see ohelo berries and little mongooses in the bush, little birds hopping along the trail, and views out to the crater nearby. This is a good little hike and fully paved — there were strollers, bikers, and runners along the way. Crowd = good vibes, though I visited on a weekday in December, so I am not sure if it gets very packed in other seasons. Highly recommend the swim at beach north of here too if you are a strong swimmer. Lovely crystal clear water, intense fun waves. Uber works here too, plenty cell phone service!

The trail to Lighthouse Point was great, paved the entire way and a good incline the entire way, relatively easy. Parking was the most difficult part, tons of people parked on the sides and even out on the main road. We sat in line for a while just to get to the parking lot and turn around to park up on the street. Aside from that hiccup, it was worth it and absolutely beautiful views from the end! Loved getting to see the shoreline, out into the ocean and overlooking the lighthouse.
