On the Grid : Maker House Co.

"A pop-up made permanent, Maker House combines the spirit of Ottawa’s maker scene with an outlet for display, sales, and promotion of over 90 artisans. The shop aims to weave narratives with the wares, discuss the makers behind the production, and support the local businesses that feed into the thriving community. Ranging in scale from meticulously crafted jewelry to artwork and furniture, Maker House provides a nice alternative to that Peace-Tower snow globe…unless you’re into that sort of thing." - PLOTNONPLOT

I’m addressing my disappointing experience shopping on their website. I am a tea lover and love collecting limited edition tins as welll. The website shown a lavenderish pink tin but when I ordered two of them, it came in white regular Sloan tins. The store should update the photo of the item, instead of misleading the online customers into buying and thinking that’s what they’ll get. I get this feeling that the store purposely do this in order to get rid of their last stock. Because after I bought the two tins, the item is now out of stock. I might be wrong, but if that’s what it is, what a shame way of doing the little business that seems proud of their way giving back to community. Before I made my order, I knew this is a little store and I read their return policy. I write to the store regarding this issue, but I never get any reply. I don’t think a simple apologize is too much to ask. Is this because your online customer less important than your local customers? Is it because this issue too small to deal with? I had much better experience shopping from much smaller stores and their professionalism is top notch compared to this. As customers, we shouldn’t get less treatment regardless the item/the amount we buy. I’m very disappointed!!! I hope no one experience this in the future.

Google
Well this was definitely our favourite gift shop in Ottawa. Like most big cities, they're flooded with cheap junk made from poor countries with materials that will fall apart in no time. But this place is different. It's high quality. Canadian made from what I seen. And great selection. The selection of goods here is so vast. You can buy some Peace by Chocolate, a t-shirt or soap. So many options. Definitely make this part of your stops when you come to Ottawa. 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Nice gift shop. Got magnets with animals drawn on them when I went here a few months ago, and I really like the designs. It's small and not overwhelming, but theres still a lot of selection. I also got some post cards and a set of Doctor Who stickers online from them a few months before that. They seem keen on hiring/supporting First Nations creators as well.

What an extraordinary place. Great service, wonderfully airy layout. Terrific quality gear and a real joy to shop there...

Love the merch. Wide range of price points. It's possible to find an array of unique items and gifts within most budgets. If you don't want to pay for street parking be prepared to walk a bit on poorly shoveled/plowed side roads. (It was snowing on the day that I shopped there - which is not always the case!) Welcome to winter in 🇨🇦 .

The most beautiful and well curated shop full of Canadian made goods! The staff is beyond wonderful, always so welcoming and warm. I could spend hours browsing and shopping all the incredible local treasures here. Absolutely recommend a visit, you'll be happy you did!

Google
Great shop with handmade products from makers all across Ontario and Canada. Loved how it’s such an easy place to go shop for local gifts for friends and family. When we went, there were also preñada gift boxes which makes it easier to buy and give gift and support individual creators instead of big corporations. They donate 2% of the profits to local charities. Fantastic store and definitely worth checking out.

Yelp
TL;DR/The Short Version: Cute shop that sells all things Canadiana! Everything is made in Canada too. The Long Version: Looking for poutine motif items? Or a tote celebrating Montreal bagels? How about stickers of characters from the show Degrassi High? Or a mug that expresses your love for the Ottawa neighbourhood of Hintonburg? Maker House has all these items! I love all the quirky Canadian pop culture items they carry! The store isn't just about kitsch though, they have products from all over Canada, like Maritime Madness hot sauce, made in PEI (and is the best hot sauce I've ever had). They have chocolates, teas, drinks and other food items too. Really fun store to poke around. I'd recommend coming here to get a true souvenir from Canada, instead of getting something that happens to have the Canadian flag or the word Canada on it but is actually made in China :/ Street parking only. Yelp
I absolutely looove shopping at Maker House on Wellington because of their great selection of local goodies to see and buy. They currently still have a mask policy in effect and will limit capacity if it's really busy. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The store is set up with different sections ranging from plants to gourmet food to clothing to wall decor to cosmetics and more. I appreciate how neatly it's organized so if you know exactly what you want then you can just beeline it to that section of the store. My friend from B.C. and I send each other an annual "Local Love Box" using an agreed upon spending limit. Maker House was a one stop shop for me to pick up a bunch of local products for her Local Love Box. I bought chocolate from Hummingbird Chocolate and Soma Chocolate. I also got Brown Bag Coffee, Sloane Tea, a cool maple leaf pin made of parliament's old roof, gourmet popcorn and meringue drops, plus a neat poutine postcard. My friend ended up loving it all! Maker House has a great "Winterruption" Sale that seems to happen every January, so I highly recommend checking that out for some great deals! Otherwise this place is fantastic for picking up gifts for loved ones (or for yourself heehee).

Yelp
I just discovered this place, and WOW! I am in love! I purchased three items from the shop today, one was an amazing "Civic Pharmacy" sticker, made by "Damn Fine Prints", I used to live next to the Experimental Farm for 10+ years so this is an iconic sign for those of us who called Carlington home. I also bought two wall décor items for our cottage in Québec. One item is an ingenious way to use an old licence plate. The artist "Broken Stick" is from Ottawa. It is a licence plate from Québec from what appears to be 1971, that is secured to a piece of rustic looking barn board. It will make an epic edition to our cottage. The other is a print that I got framed in house. The art is a print of a radio painted by "Made in Brockton Village", with the "National Research Council" quote that you can hear at 1 pm on CBC Radio. As we often listen to CBC Radio at the cottage, on a similar radio, no less, we often hear Lawrence Wall announce the 1 pm time, followed by the BEEEEEP. This place is epic and really worth a look if you want to support local!
