Makers Guild Wales (Craft in the Bay)

Another beautiful building in Cardiff bay. There's plenty of rotating exhibitions here, and also a permanent collection of artists work. The gallery is run by guild members, and it's their work that is available in the shop. The works featured are predominately ceramics, but glassware, metalwork, woodwork, fabrics and other media are all featured. Everything is quite expensive however, and the building can get a little too hot in summer sometimes. It tends to act a bit like a greenhouse. Still worth a visit!

This is a fantastic space with a diverse array of beautiful handmade items and artwork made by artists and crafts people in Wales. It has to be said, though, that much of the work is very expensive. It is a shame that there isn't more affordable work available. Nevertheless, this is a fabulous facitity that should be supported.

A fabulous place to visit. This gallery exhibits beautiful pottery, glass, painting, carved wood and jewellery. Just about everything you can think of and all so lovely look at. There are exhibitions every year from local art students too. You can buy the exhibits and prices range from several hundred to just a few pounds. Definitely food for the soul visiting here; it's fantastic how creative people can be.

The finest gallery of crafts I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. The quality of the ceramics was stunning, and there were some unique pieces made with unusual methods. I must give a special mention for the leather pictures.

Exploring this store is a little like exploring a gallery. I have a particular fondness for the beautiful ceramic and glass pieces that they have. Some are practical, such as tableware, but many pieces are purely artworks for putting on display. The only problem is that I don't have enough room in my house for all the pieces that I would like to take home with me.

An interesting exhibition space with some really skilled craftsmen and women exhibiting their work. They also have a very interesting selection of books for sale. I thoroughly enjoyed wandering around, the staff were also very friendly and helpful. As an artisan it is always nice to find galleries like this.

Craft in the Bay really is a beautiful shop that encompasses all that has changed in the Bay. I often wonder around in the brightly lit, all glass store as it is almost a gallery rather than a shop. There is some fantastic sculptures on display is well worth a visit just for that alone. There is also a more traditional part of the shop that sells vases and smaller items, all seemingly hand made as far as my uneducated eyes can tell. Staff are also very friendly here and are always willing to detail a sculpture for you and help in any way they can. Always a pleasant experience upon visiting here.

This modern glass and wood building housing an art and craft gallery showcases contemporary work by members of The Makers Guild in Wales, and also hosts a changing programme of national and international exhibitions. Only the best Welsh talent can become members of the Guild, as membership is by rigorous selection - so the work on display is of a very high standard. All of the exhibitions are free to explore, and you can also buy pieces of art and craft, ranging from ceramics to bags and even furniture. Kemi' s Café is housed next door to the gallery, overlooking the Millennium Centre, and is open from 8.30am-4.30pm serving up quality, wholesome food.

I'm not into crafts or art or crafty arts particularly but I have been to Crafts in the Bay - why? Because it was a sunny bank holiday Monday and every bar & cafe in the bay was rammed to the rafters with the world and its thirsty dog. it would have been easier to get a seat on the moon. So we retreated to Crafts in the bay which had quite a few spare seats outside next to the little water fountain. I had a latte and a chicken pannini - it was very pleasant indeed. I would recommend it. As for the arts and crafts there - sorry you're asking the wrong person but if you're into it, why not have a seat in a not crowded area, enjoy a drink and browse at you own leisure in this pleasant bay over flow cafe. I am not exactly passionate about art and crafts but I do appreciate some of the work that people put in to create an art piece. I have been here once or twice with my girlfriend to see the different types of art that 'Craft in the Bay' has. I cannot remember the theme last time but I seem to remember seeing a lot of masks. The art was impressive and it can be a very inspiring to you if you are an art student. As I have mentioned I have only been there twice but I was impressed with the quality of art that was on display and ready to be bought. I know that there will soon be a 'Teapot exhibition' in October so I would look out for that. I once knew somebody who had his own magazine and manage to sell all his copies because he asked the owner if he could put his magazines there and see if they would sell. I'm not sure how putting your own work there would go but the people who work there are friendly and helpful when it comes to queries. Craft in the Bay is a wonderful gallery and exhibition centre that sells and has creative pieces of work. After exploring the craft centre you could even go for a coffee in the café attached to it. Art and coffee is a perfect mix.

This is a great place! The building is unique in its look and history. It is located plum in the heart of Cardiff Bay and is surrounded by fountains and has a paved area with some seating. Stepping inside the glass box is full of pieces made by makers in the Makers Guild in Wales. There is an array of materials, glass, wood, pottery, textile etc in many different forms/styles. There is also a wide range of prices to suit pockets of shallow depth to the deep. It has a cafe attached which serves up great healthy food. Very well worth a visit!

Although I'm actaully quite a big fan of this craft centre in Cardiff Bay, it always depends entirely on what artists they are presenting as to whether or not it's worth a visit. Just a little bit more consistency, and we'd have a winner! This is a nice open, airy space which has clearly taken a whole lot of inspiration from the surrounding areas to use in its design. Like so many other buildings in Cardiff, including the Millennium Stadium, the structure of the building is taken from ideas of ships and masts. Many of the outer walls are made of glass (a smaller version of the Welsh Assembly) and despite being a good number of years old now, it still has a very modern and contemporary feel to it. While the prices for the artwork may be quite high at times, there are also some cheaper items/artists who are usually well worth looking into. I would imagine this is because the artists themselves set the prices, rather than the centre. If you're down in the Bay anyway, this is well worth a visit, but not really worth the trekon its own.

More like an art gallery than just a shop. All prices are mostly under a £100, but I still think it is very pricy. But then again I suppose people have to make a living and it sells very neat and unique items that range from pictures; poems, post cards, books, DVDs, wrapping paper, glass materials, jewellery, scarf's, fabrics to make things with, and unusual art. This shop is situated opposite the Welsh Millennium centre and it has a large water fountain in front of it and cafe upstairs. It is a clean and tidy and has everything neat in place on display. If only a mouse broke in it would cause an earth quake, especially as most things are glass, or some form of very fragile material. Defiantly a shop for artists and for those who can afford to buy a special someone something special. It is the sort of shop my mum and nanna might browse in, but possibly not buy anything in, in less they could afford to.

I bet you have driven past this shop so many times without it ever crossing your mind to enter. That is probably because it set in a rather odd (some would say silly) location. It is situated adajcent to the Millennium centre and across the road from the Red Dreagon Centre. It doesnt have parking outside so you would need to park in the bay somewhere then walk across. However all this said now you know where it is and where to park you really should pay this little hub of lovelyness a visit. It sells everything from poems to jewellery to pictures. Prices are are slightly higher than I expected but I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for. It would be a great little bolt hole if you were visiting Cardiff bay and were looking to buy a gift for somebody. If your not interested in arts and crafts there is also a little cafe with outside seating for you to visit.

Been to Craft in the Bay a couple of times and it is always worth a visit. Featuring a good selection of eye candy like home made paper, ceramics, prints, jewellery, rugs and sculpture. Like a high class IKEA. I could happily break in and steal away all the lovely sparkly items. Unfortunately that's about all I can do as most of the stuff is out of my price range. Lots of artists exhibit there so there's always a good array of stuff on show. A few years ago i bought a silver ring for my partner for a special occasion and after I'd put the order in the artist rang me to make sure of the requirements. They also ensured the ring was delivered on time and with with a lot of information about the ring and the artist who had created it. I felt had bought a piece of art not just a piece of jewellery which made it very special. Main gripe is it's not easy to park there and it's not quite in the Bay and not quite in town. But Kemi's Cafe is worth a visit next door.

I should only really review the Cafe (Kemi's Cafe) here rather than the arts and crafts area, as you could write everything I know about arts and crafts onto a small piece of tissue paper, but I do like eating, so the cafe, I can do. It's a little bit pricey, but it's not bad for city centre prices and it's worth it. There's not a lot of what you'd call main meals but you could fill up on salads easily, but mainly you could skip all that and just get to the cakes, some of which are delicious. This place is just over the road from the Opera House and round the corner from all the eateries on the waterfront, yet the fact of a 100 yard walk and a pedestrian crossing seems to put off a lot of passing trade. It's a shame for the shop, but it does make it quieter.

In a slightly unusual position in the the centre of a busy road in the bay, this is a lovely glass and wooden building. The art and craft gallery inside is fantastic with regular artists displaying their work alongside occasional projects and displays. I've seem some great work here that has been in collaboration with local schools - there is usually something interesting to see. You can also purchase lots of the craft work from bags and clothes to kitchenware and furniture. The cafe here is well worth a visit too. They offer really wholesome and interesting food. Lots of salads, quiche and soup. The salad bar is fantastic you can have a full salad or side salad with most dishes and choose to have a full mixture of all the different options or pick out the ones you like. Usually things like chargrilled vegetables, chickpea salads, beetroots, couscous, beans.. lots of colourful ways to get your 5 a day here! It's not the cheapest cafe in the world but the portions are fantastic and they will pack up any leftovers for you to take home. Brilliant! All the staff here are incredibly friendly and lovely. Very warm atmosphere.

Kemi's Cafe in Cardiff Bay is one of my favorite daytime eateries in Cardiff. I like the relaxed atmosphere, the friendly staff, the interesting local arts and 'what's on' magazines but of course the main selling point is the food. I usually go for a 'salad feast', which is a selection of the salad bar dishes, it certainly is generous and really nice after a walk across the barrier from Penarth. I've not had a whole cake for myself, but I've tried some and they are excellent. Given that there is a lot of choice down in the Bay it is fair to say that there us a lot of competition, but I would say that for quality of the wholesome salads and prices it makes the best value choice. It has a nice feel about the place that I don't find in most of the numerous chain restaurants just around the corner.

Looking like a giant greenhouse on a traffic island, this glass-coated Cardiff Bay gallery and shop lives across the busy road from the Wales Millennium Centre aka the "Flourish" at the south end of Lloyd George Avenue. The refurbished "D" Shed, a Grade II listed maritime warehouse, contains the permanent exhibition for contemporary applied art and craft by the 70 members of The Makers Guild in Wales. It is the perfect space for finding unusual jewellery, bags, furniture and crafty knick knacks for gifts as well as taking in the changing programme of national and international exhibitions. I can often be found making my 'WANT' face and unsubtly pointing at items on my birthday wishlist. Craft demonstrations such as machine knitting are regularly performed by members and visitors may also attend makers' talks and participate in practical workshops. Bonus points? Kemis' on-site café (upstairs) is brilliant for unusual salads, filling jacket potatoes and scrumptious cakes. Eat there.

Craft in The Bay is situated across from the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay. Set apart on a large road island is a surprisingly old building made of steel, glass and wood. This is mainly a gallery where you can view contemporary craft pieces or exhibitions by members of The Makers Guild in Wales, purchase something -as the gallery also serves as a shop- or attend a craft workshop. The gem for me is Kemis Café (which takes up the other part of the building). The lunch menu is a more wholesome one, freshly made and the salad dishes are put together in a more interesting way and I would definitely recommend trying the salads of the day. The cakes on display are also good. Order downstairs with seating upstairs give a great view of the Millennium Centre building and the Roahl Dahl Plass.
