What is Cocido Madrileño, Madrid's Popular Stew? - AFAR

"A historic wine bar in the working-class La Latina neighborhood, established in 1895 and recommended as a classic spot to try traditional cocido madrileño, especially when visiting the area's Sunday market scene." - Leah Messinger

We came in with such high expectations, super excited to try the Cocido Madrileño, the traditional Madrid stew, but we walked out extremely disappointed. Honestly, please save your money and avoid it. You worked hard for your money, spend it something that is worth it😭 First of all, the portion size for one person is absolutely unnecessary. It’s way too big, and you’re not even allowed to share. One portion could easily feed two people (maybe even three if you’re girls). I just don’t get why you’d serve that much food to one person. It’s not enjoyable, it’s wasteful, and it kind of kills the experience. Secondly, the stew is WAY WAY WAY too salty. Seriously. We started with the first vuelco, the broth with noodles. First sip, and I legit questioned if it was cooked with seawater. We then added the chickpeas and vegetables, hoping it would balance out the saltiness. It helped a little, and for a moment we thought, “Okay, maybe this is salvageable.” Then we got to the third vuelco, and that’s when 💩 hit the fan. The cured jamon was super dry and salty, and combined with the soup, every bite felt like I was dying with this seawater food. The only meat that was somewhat edible was the beef shank, but even that was very salty. Thirdly, the problem doesn’t just stop at the cocido. One of our friends ordered fish, and when it came out, half of it was cold. We kept asking each other if we were imagining things, like how do you cook a fish and serve it half cold? Anyway, to wrap it up: our favorite thing was chugging the bottle of water to save ourself and the moment we could stop eating. On the bright side, the experience was so ridiculous that we ended up laughing our asses off. Great memories with our group, but definitely not because of the food.✨✨✨ 我打了一堆英文 但我想說的是拜託拜託遠離這家餐廳 食物有夠無敵鹹 真的嚇死我們 讓我犧牲小我完成大我 請你們不要在這吃飯 吃完真的會懷疑人生😭😭😭😭

Talk about a fabulous traditional Madrileño dining experience. The hustle and bustle of the dining room, surrounded by history. I wanted my first time having “Cocido Madrileño” to be authentic. Malacatín delivered. My husband and I each had “Nuestro famoso Cocido Madrileño.” It’s 25€ / Persona and no you can’t share one. Be prepared for the massive portion, so go hungry. I have pictured all the various foods that come with the order. You basically create the stew of your choosing or put everything in the broth at once, which I believe is the true way to eat it. It was divine 😋

Had the cocido - soup was delicious; the constituent meats and pieces not so much. Wife had the steak, which was fantastic. Terrific service and great vibes.

Google
The cocido itself is excellent , but the overall experience was disappointing enough that I wouldn’t recommend it. They don’t allow sharing, and the portions are absurdly large, even for two people. Everyone leaving the restaurant was saying the same thing: way too much food, most of it wasted. Service was unfriendly, and when I asked to take the leftovers because I felt bad about the waste, they charged €1.30 for the takeaway Container. It’s a shame that such a good dish is served with so little thought for the customer experience or basic sustainability and respect for the animals. Sadly, I wouldn’t go back

Nearly wasn't able to eat here for a very late lunch because they were fully booked, so try and get a reservation in advance! Luckily we were able to squeeze into the bar counter. We got the cocido Madrileño and the callos as well as patatas bravas and bread. The food was all delicious, and luckily since they were from the bar menu, the portions were small enough and good enough for 2 to share. Love this quaint restaurant and bar, with it's lovely neighborhood vibe.

Felt like a truly classic Madrid spot. Lots of food, really good service, and really cool art on the walls. Lively and delicious, very happy I got a chance to visit!

Great service considering not everyone in Madrid speaks English, but our waitress spoke at least Spanish, English and French. She explained everything on the menu and especially the highlight, the "cocido", one of the traditional dishes of Madrid, a very rich soup made from broths along with chickpeas, potatoes and of course a selection of different meats. We also tried the oxtail which was very tasty. A few good wines are also available. Definitely make a reservation or you might be upset.

Yelp
We came back a second time during the week and the service was ...tolerable to put it in nice terms, until they remembered that we had been there earlier in the week. The 2 waiters who greeted us treated us like we were a nuisance. Until we asked for our previous waitress and then the attitude became tolerable. I must say that as good as the little plates are by themselves, the cocita (multiple course meal) was rather bland. It reminded us of a medieval dinner with meats and potatoes boiled in salt. We took most of it out to make sandwiches later on. The meat was just too salty, and that was back alley the only flavoring on it. But don't let that stop you from trying all the tapas and enjoying the ambience and history. The cocita is over rated and underwhelming.

Yelp
We saw a YouTube video of this old restaurant since 1895 and came here for the ambience and also to try the Cocida. They have a minimum of a Cocida per person (25 Euro) or Cocida and a main course. We had the Ox Tail (22 Euro). The wine is 5 Euro per glass. We found the Cocida not to our likings. The chicken was bit tough and not much flavor. The Ox Tail was a bit too salty for us too. But the ambience was great, with lots of photos of Bull Fighters in the wall.

Yelp
Unique ambiance. Obviously if you are going go for their signature soup. It is ridiculously large portioned (two to three people can eat this and be full). It's also good that the dish is designed to be sort of DIY; you can make the flavors work. The spot is clearly one of the favorites among the locals. I was the only out of towner there when I went. The service is very friendly and prompt. The cuts of meat are also tender and unique. If you want a variety, something different, this is your spot.

Yelp
Amazing. Absolutely loved the experience. If you're just one person, you can sit at the bar and get a "degustación" menu, or smaller portion. I got the cocido, so good. If I go back I'd love to try the oxtails. If you have more than 1 person you can sit in the back and get the large portion which is more "authentic" because it's designed to be shared, but mine was great. Get the extra broth.

Yelp
Low key and off a busy street, this place was a great experience. About a 21 minute walk from El Museo de Reina Sofia. It is a great spot to take a break with some tapas and vermut. Their vermut on draft was delicious and refreshing. They're known for their Callos a la Madrileña (stew with loads of meat - tripe, blood sausage that is cooked for hours). They also have Pisto Manchego (all veggie dish like a ratatouille). There was also bread and olives that came as tapas. We didn't have a reservation, but they were able to seat us by the bar. Service was great and food was tasty. The Callos was a little too fatty for me. I'm not the biggest fan of tripe but really wanted to try this dish. The flavors did not disappoint.

Yelp
Everyone says this is the best place for cocido. Make sure you make a reservation well in advance! The place is small and you will be turned away. (And not in a nice way). . Maybe next time. We went in November and they did not have space until April. Good luck!

Yelp
I usually eat lunch early, so when I got to the restaurant at opening time (11:30am), of course, they did not have the the full cocido experience until 1pm. The waiter did offer me a Cocido degustación, which is a smaller sampler of the cocido and actually perfect size for 1 person. It was very good, nice and tender. The flavors blended very well and the staff was very friendly....although a bit busy since they were getting all stuff ready for the day. The restaurant is very cozy and it has a nice ambiance. Check it out.

Yelp
Small taverna / restaurant in the Restro part of Madrid. We asked a local where we should go for real traditional food and this is the place. Open for over 120 years this place is famous for Cocido which is like a hearty stew with multiple different meats. We were able to order a small portion, and the full order fills a big table with food. They were full when we went, but they made room for us at the bar. It was super delicious and meant to be eaten more in winter, but still tasty in July, lol.

Yelp
Excellent food! Had the Cocido soup...it was fabulous... this is a Madrid tradition. This restaurant has been open for 120 years family-owned. The wine was of the top 6% of the world, I checked it on an app called Vivino...It was a huge portion, so it's a soup broth with noodles. Then they bring you a plate full of meats and vegetables to mix into broth the broth and noodles. Overall I would highly recommend this restaurant

Yelp
The wine was amazing, some of the best wine I ever had. It is a little pricey but good food. The food is very homemade. They are known for cocido madrileño. Cocido includes unlimited soup, vegetables, and meat. To be specific it is potatoes, chickpeas, chicken, beef, pork, two types of sausages. Try to book your reservation as soon as possible. The food is good but not great in my opinion. The soup was the best along with the wine. The meat could of used more flavoring to me.

Yelp
Made reservation for two. A bottle of house wine plus a 5-course meal (same description as other previous posts) came out to be about 60 euros total. Good flavor soup and meats (pork, chicken, and beef). Favorite is the pork, which has a lot of flavor. Don't feel bad if you can't finish food served to you because no one can. American Express accepted here.

Yelp
So much food!!!! Came here for my mom's birthday dinner and we were overwhelmed with all the food they give you with the traditional cocido dish. I wanted us to try some traditional food and this was definitely the place to try it. We made reservations, which I recommend. The place is fairly small and it does get crowded. We saw people waiting. Service was nice and I appreciated how our server was trying to understand my high school Spanish. Hehe. On to the food. Cocido consisted of a stew with noodles in it. You then eat the stew with the following (or you don't). To be honest I don't know, but that's what I did. -Potatoes -Chickpeas -Chicken -Beef -Pork -Two types of sausage I really liked the beef, nice and tender. I thought the chicken was bland, but the pork was tasty as well. I tried one of the sausages which was ok, had a distinct taste. There was so much food though and we barely ate a 1/3 of it. It was good to try this though, since it's very different and you probably couldn't get something like that in the states. I wish I could comment more, but this was my first time having it and it was nice to enjoy something authentic and different. If you go, be sure you have a large party because it is a large amount of food!

Yelp
This is a Men vs Food kind! Authentic Cocido Madrileño in the heart of Madrid. Tiny restaurant but giant servings. If you wanna try it out go starving, food take out is not allowed in this place (downward) and reservation is required for tables!!

Yelp
Best cocido in Madrid, hands down. Always crowded, make reservations if you want a table, though they are often able to accommodate us at the bar when we drop by. Shout out to the best bartender and host ever, Michael!

Yelp
Holy Bull Fighting! Great old school atmosphere. We stopped for drinks and snacks, had an awesome experience. Highlight of the visit: table side gin and tonic... They poured the gin till you said to stop, never seen that before. Super fun and drinks to order.

Stuart R.

Yelp
Was in the area so jumped on yelp to find some food! The service was fantastic even with my non existent Spanish! I had the sardines and the tripe! The tripe was sensational. I thought I liked it before I went to Malacatín, but the way they prepared it, so tender! They lost a star on the sardines out of a tin! Other than that I highly recommend checking it out!!!

Yelp
We wanted to try the cocido madrileño while visiting Madrid and it looks like this is the spot to do it. Unfortunately you need advance reservations to get in. A very nice barman allowed us to eat at the bar (standing). So this review is not the proper experience of this place. We tried the cocido and the ropa vieja, honestly, it was not that amazing that I would plan a day around my reservation to this place. Both dishes were good but not thaaaat great.

Nahem S.

Yelp
This tavern has been around for over one hundred years for a reason. Maybe it's because their signature plate, "cocido madrileño", served in 3 "vuelcos" or stages. It's tasty and you're guaranteed to leave the room feeling full. Please, save some space for dessert, the cheesecake is the best one I've tried so far in Madrid. It's traditionally decorated with tiles and paintings, long wooden tables and wooden chairs. I've come back several times for the cheesecake when I'm around. I've been told that booking late for dinner is not easy and walk-ins depend on booking cancellations which are rare.

Yelp
This place is the real Madrid experience. The Cocido is a multi-course Spanish dining experience they have been serving since1895. An order for two easily serves 4. The food is an adventure: soup with noodles, garbanzo beans, cabbage, pork fat, cured ham, pork, chicken, meat and sausages. According to 4th generation owner, Jose, the portions haven't changed in 150 years and no one has ever eaten it all. Not your regular dining, but worth the enjoyment. Reservations required.
