Yelp
A great place to visit and a true hidden gem. If you love great ocean views with natural surroundings this is your spot. The views from the Rossler Point Gazebo are fantastic. And the short walk down to Malaga Cove Beach is well worth it. HINT: sunsets are fantastic. Make sure you also check out the Neptune Fountain (picture included)

Yelp
My original FTR of Malaga Cove was posted 12 years ago, so time for an update. I can see from some other reviews that people unfamiliar with the area don't realize that Malaga Cove is not just the name of the ocean cove itself, but the area (in Palos Verdes Estates) surrounding it...bordered on the north by Torrance/Redondo & on the south by Lunada Bay (also an area of PVE). To clear up another point of confusion: the Malaga Cove hiking trails are in the hills above PV Dr West. As stated in my 2008 review, directions to trailheads are found in my old photo captions. I frequently see wedding & model photo shoots in Malaga Cove Plaza. There are signs stating that a permit is needed for professional shoots there. PVE City Hall (Civic Center) is half a block south from the plaza so they could offer more info. The small sand beach at Malaga Cove is actually RAT Beach (Right at Torrance or Redondo at Torrance). RAT Beach can be accessed from a path next to Roessler Point gazebo (in lower Malaga Cove area) as well as from the north end of the beach that is Torrance. Someone recently asked "can I bring my dog?" (to Malaga Cove). To the area, of course. To RAT Beach, no. Technically, dogs are not allowed on any beaches, even leashed. The only official dog beach I'm aware of is in Long Beach. However...I've seen leashed dogs being walked down the steep trail at Bluff Cove (also in the area of Malaga Cove, PVE). It's not really a beach but rather a rocky shoreline, beautiful place, part of Palos Verdes Estates Shoreline Preserve. So you can walk with your dog in PVE Shoreline Preserve in multiple oceanfront parklands along PV Drive West & also Paseo Del Mar. All that said, this review update was intended to focus on peafowl! Let's get to it. This is mating season & they're all over Malaga Cove (area, not ocean shoreline). They're around the Malaga Cove Library today en masse. We refer to both sexes of peafowl as "peacocks" but....the males are peacocks & the females are peahens. Males have the colorful plumage, females don't. Their offspring will be paraded through the area when they're the size of chickens. Drivers need to slow the F down!! This morning I saw cars & work trucks speeding on quiet residential streets, narrowly avoiding hitting peafowl or running over long peacock trains. This was so disturbing to me that I didn't stay long. Yes, peafowl can fly & you'll see them up in trees. And their shriek is so loud it can be heard blocks away. They sit on roofs & on porches & they eat your plants. Males are currently displaying full plumage when the "ladies" are nearby. Wherever the girls are, the boys are, following them around, mostly being ignored. Hang in there, boys. Those girls are busy feasting on people's landscaping but eventually they'll mate with you. Girls appreciate patience. ( ; I appreciate the photo ops in this peacefully magical place.

Yelp
Loved this beach! We went on friday from 8-10am and it was not busy. We felt safe since there was a lot of room for people to social distance and many people were wearing masks. There's a short walk from the parking lot to get down to the beach. I would come back since parking is such a breeze and the water and sand are very clean!

Yelp
Malaga Cove is one of those hidden gems along the coastline of Palos Verdes, California. There are a few ways to take in the sights, the sounds, and the smells, of this spectacular location. The first and easiest way is to view it from above. To do this this you drive along Palos Verdes Drive, West, take the turn off, drive a few hundred yards and then you come to the end of the street. There, you simply park, get out of your car, and take in all of the beauty. This location in PV is an interesting area onto itself. When you get there to stare out over the sea you will notices that the land seems to be receding -- falling into the sea. It is. Not that long ago, a street actually pass through this area but due to coastal erosion that street feel into the sea. A couple of years ago the city reworked this area, put up a wall that will hopefully keep PV Drive from also experiencing this same fate. But, you can still walk out onto the area and feel a certain nostalgia for what once was. Plus, the view is great! The other way to experience Malaga Cove is to walk down to the water. You don't do that from the location I just described, as the cliffs are far too sheer. But, there is a nice walkway that will take you down to the water off of Paseo Del Mar. This is how the surfers, who like to surf in this water, get there. Once down at the waterline in Malaga there are nice rock formations in the water. Though it is not a great beach for what one would traditionally expect for swimming or sunbathing, as there is not a lot of sand and the water is generally a little choppy,. But, for the experienced swimmer, diver, or surfer, this is a great place to enter the sea. For everyone else, this is a beautiful place to simply sit back and experience the Pacific Ocean. Overall, this is a beautiful location along the Southern California Coastline.

Yelp
This place is absolutely gorgeous. It is super clean and serene. I was in Palos Verdes on a Monday looking for a place to hike when I ran into this trail. It is really not much of a hike, it is more of a scenic route to the beach. On a Monday the area was pretty populated so I would imagine that it gets pretty during the weekend. I saw a lot of people paddle boarding, kayaking, and surfing. The easiet way to find this place is to have your GPS route you to Malaga Cove School. Once you get to the parking lot, find parking and make your way down the hill that is off to the right of the Gazebo. My GPS could not successfully route me to Malaga Cove. Enjoy!!

Yelp
Came to Malaga Cove for an afternoon out during the pandemic. Malaga Cove is a beautiful place for surfing, tidepooling, spear fishing, and relaxing. ***PARKING*** There is plenty of free parking at Malaga Cove School and Via Arroyo Street. ***ACCESS TO COVE*** The Malaga Cove Gazebo at Rosser Point is a great place for expansive views of the coastline. Just east of the Malaga Cove Gazebo take the walkway down to RAT Beach. The paved walkway leads to this rocky and sandy beach. ***TAKE WATER SHOES*** If you plan on tidepooling, wear water shoes. The tidepool area is rocky. You'll need water shoes/good grip shoes to safely and comfortably reach the tidepools. ***STAY FOR THE SUNSET*** Just above RAT Beach, there are several flat, open, public green spaces to sit and enjoy a gorgeous California sunset. ***NEARBY SITES*** -Malaga Cove Elementary is open to the public-large, expansive green space, pull up bars, plenty of basketball courts. -Neptune's Fountain at the Malaga Cove Plaza up the street -St Vicente Lighthouse (check for hours), Wayfarers Chapel, tons of oceanside parks, trails are other points of interest in the vicinity.

Yelp
5 stars are because it's a hidden gem and excellent spot for photo ops, couples, families, and for people like me, who like to get away from the city and be in a tranquil spot. The Gazebo is an added bonus to take photos, although not sure about the rules (or if it's allowed/permits required?) as far as doing professional pics there, but I did see a group from what looked like prom formals/tuxes coming to it, so who knows? I'm sure it's a hit w/the surfers as well;again a hidden gem and great if you want to enter Rat Beach thru here, that's if your just randomly drifting thru & light carry ons or backpacking it. The spot for hiking that everyone talks about is not an actual hiking trail. But you can go walking on the rocks down at the bottom, go opposite way of Rat Beach past the exclusive Swimming pool club, find a hidden trail that takes you back up the cliff is a also a workout, but a short one, not challenging if your a intermediate hiker. Either way, it's scenic, adventurous spot to check out. There are bazillion multi use trails nearby - you have to explore & find them. If you go on the trail down towards Rat Beach, you'll see a tiny tiny creek, on your right in front of the swimming pool; I saw a few teenagers scuba diving too. I walked around on the outside by the park and trail. Again, trail is a puny one. And if you walk past the Athletic Club (It's a wrought door entry, looks very exclusive! cool if you belong to it), you can walk to the Palos Verdes Shoreline Preserve (and it's broken up - parts here & there, locals/people familiar with it know it well, as for me, I didn't know this until I moved out here recently and invested time walking on Palos Verdes West and Paseo Del Mar - all of them. Allrighty drifting off Malaga Cove, I smell another review!! I love this place, romantic spot for couples, or just for you to have "me & only me time" ;) winks!

Yelp
Found this place by accident just driving up the one and onto Palos Verdes Dr. from Santa Monica. It was definitely a day where the marine layer was so thick you could see the fine molecules of mist just in the air in Santa Monica. When we drove up onto Palos Verdes Dr. we had an amazing view of the clouds sitting on the water as if it were a wall of clouds coming towards us, but it was still clear enough from the cove to see it all clearly. I mean it was the most epic sunset I've ever seen or recorded. If you're not from California or even if you are, Malaga Cove is definitely a site to see and experience at sunset.

Yelp
The PV Hills were so beautiful this year after all the rain we had this year. Wish I would have more time to enjoy the fantastic mustard fields.

Yelp
What a location. I think everyone should take this drive at least once if you're visiting the area. I came to visit from Baltimore and my boyfriend took me here to get away from the hustle and bustle. It was so nice to come here and just take it all in. We drove since he's in redondo but we didn't have a hard time finding any parking since there is a lot. It's beautiful lots of green, lots of water, and people just enjoying the weather outside. We came here on a weekday morning, but I can imagine that it would get busy on the weekends, especially when it is a littler warmer out.

Yelp
Tip: to get to the gazebo, navigate to the school parking lot! It's kind of confusing as Malaga Cove is a whole neighborhood, so google and Apple Maps will lead you to a million different locations.

Yelp
A great place to visit and a true hidden gem. The views from the Rossler Point Gazebo are fantastic. And the short walk down to Malaga Cove Beach is well worth it. I have to admit I discovered this place by accident while showing out-of-town friends around the Palos Verdes area. Since it faces west I am planning to be there soon at sunset and, hopefully, get some good photos.

Yelp
I was tricked into hiking... A friend wanted to do a photo shoot and we were "assisting". I didn't realize that it meant walking up and down hills. If it weren't for the gorgeous views, i would have been whining about where is the cupcake at the end of the trail. Good thing i wasn't wearing my 6 inch heels and booty shorts as i saw one gal sport while posing on the rocks with a roided out young sandy blond chap. Unfortunately i didn't take a photo, but i'm sure it will turn up somewhere. i did shoot a photo of this cute mermaid chick at the cove plaza http://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/iZ5j0E0JaV_msewF8aoouw?select=6WOh8TcTNkx4re5YnokpUw

Yelp
Best way to locate is to GPS Malaga School. There's a big school parking lot, also parking on the street. Very scenic coastline view. Across the street from the parking lot, there's a gazebo overlooking the beach, nice coastline photo opp. To the right of the gazebo, there's a paved trail leading down to the beach. The shoreline is rocky, but a nice spot foe sunset photos.

Yelp
I recently accepted a new position that has allowed me to view The Cove on a daily basis. I first drove by and thought man that would be an incredible spot to surf. I stopped my car low & behold surfers in the water now the thought was how to get down there. If you are reading this review in hopes to figure that out, well figure it out=) The Cove is simply incredible. There is nothing like arriving in the morning knowing you are going to see breath taking beauty when you look over the edge. Parking is street parking in a residential neighborhood so please keep it quiet. I was getting out of the water and doing the hike back up the hill and I could hear 'Punk Rock' music being blasted (people live here, don't crap where you eat as the saying goes). The walk down the hill/path is more of a 10-15 minute hike which is filled with breath taking views of the Ocean, reefs, rocks, fish, kelp, surfers, paddle-boarders etc. Please be careful of falling rocks on the path. I went surfing the other day path was free & clear of rocks, walked back to car after surf session huge boulder laying the path-way. Everything about this area is exciting to me. The smell of fresh cut grass, the smell of nature, and the looks on peoples faces as they are walking by saying hello or Good Morning. This is what a surfing/hiking spot should look like. At the bottom of the hill it is extremely rocky so bring shoes and not flip flops. The locals are cool, I heard stories about locals being jerks to outside surfers but as long as you are not a 'KOOK' in the water all should be good. There are plenty of waves for everyone to catch and have the time of their lives. The waves themselves are not for beginners. The surface below the water is extremely rocky and with plus size sets rolling in you have to know what you are doing. This is definitely a longboard surf spot. You have your occasional short boarder that shows up but don't worry they will not get in your way because taking off here on a Shorty is pretty darn hard. I love this spot. I plan on keeping it secret and only turning people onto it that have the attitude to be there. Like I have stated in a previous if you surf at Porto stay there this place is not for you. KEEP OUR OCEANS CLEAN. IF YOU SEE GARBAGE/DEBRIS PICK IT UP. WE CAN WASH OUR HANDS THE OCEAN CAN NOT.

Yelp
An absolutely beautiful place! I visited this area a few weeks ago and did some exploring. Extremely peaceful and calming. Be sure to check out Roessler Point, the Neighborhood Church, fountain, and other interesting attractions. I will be back!

Yelp
Beautiful somewhat secluded area to come and enjoy the ocean. Great place to take photos at. I wish I had my big lens with me because there was a pod of porpoises having a ball just off the coast. They were popping up and down everywhere! Big plus: Free parking!!

Yelp
Breath taking views, defintely worth the drive. I did my best friends family photos here today and scenery was amazing. Oh, and we saw a whale!

Yelp
I really enjoy going here... not crowded with a ton of people. I like to take photos the view is soooo amazing. Never want to leave

Yelp
This place is beautiful lots of eucalyptus trees fresh ocean breeze and flowers all around the trail. There is a water fountain with dog bowl about a mile into hike which is great. No trash can for dog poo which isn't great.... but birds and squirrels everywhere. Mostly shaded area with the cool ocean breeze. Love this place. Also keep your dog on leash or you might get a ticket.

Yelp
My GPS refused to find this spot. I used Google Maps AND the cross street right off yelp, but we drove in circles. Do yourself a favor and just type in "Malaga Cove High School." Once you enter the parking lot for the school, you'll spot the gazebo and the little path down to the beach is to the right of it. I wouldn't really call this a "hike," since it's literally a 10minute stroll down to the beach, but it is gorgeous and serene. If there is some kind of loop/hike, then I may have missed it!

Chaza T.

Yelp
Beautiful hidden area, especially if you're looking for a very quiet place. The GPS won't give you the exact trail. Luckily I was able to figure it out with my friend. It's considered easy to medium difficulty. You'll get to see a very clean hidden beach! Love it
google avatar

Yelp
This area is beautiful. I came here with Marlon and Max... we were supposed to go hiking. We went down one trail, but then it ended. We didn't know where to go.. After about 30 minutes, we finally found it. The trail we went on is not what you'd expect. It's mostly straight... but you're surrounded by houses. You get a view of everyone's backyard. Sometimes, it seemed like we were walking down the alleys of Alabama. There are several trails here though. Malaga beach is nice. There are small rocks there. A nice lookout point. Not too crowded.

Yelp
Wow this place is beautiful! We went here on a Sunday afternoon for are engagement photo shoot. There are tons of trees, plants and flowers. It looks like a tropical rain forest. This is a little diamond in the ruff. You can relax here, go for a hike, have a picnic or even walk down a bit to the beach. Super nice, a diamond in the ruff.

Yelp
Hidden gem. We eloped at the Gazebo near Malago Cove school. Amazing spot - no permit required if you have under 7 people. Couldn't have gotten married in a more beautiful intimate spot. Best part is there weren't many people around at all. We felt like the only ones there.
google avatar

Shannon M.

Yelp
Took a long bike ride through the hills to find this place. Amazing hike. Wonderful views. Not to crowded so very peaceful. Stayed for about 4 hours just taking in the scenery.
google avatar

Ren Y.

Yelp
Strangely enough, the first time I had ever been here was for a geology class in college. You've got to loop your way around the Hill to find this place, and there is patron parking available. You start off at the top at a gazebo (picture opportunity) and work your way down to the sand. I've been here a few more times since, always finding it calming. Oh, how I miss the ocean.
google avatar

Suzy S.

Yelp
It's a nice place to stop and enjoy the view or walk down to the beach. There are usually some dolphins and surfers out. You can see the pelicans. Free parking. Quiet little beach that is fun to take a walk on.
google avatar

Yelp
Took a trip from OC just to go here and hang out, and enjoy the Italianate sculpture and arcade. Bravi! I wish architects and developers like these existed still, today.

Yelp
What more can you ask for! Amazing view of SoCAL a great place to hike!go for a run, walk,SURF!!! really nice place I love it. Such a beautiful intimate spot. Worth to check it out!

Yelp
Malago Cove is the best of the best - without question the nicest place on the entire West Coast! 5 STARS is not enough STARS for Malaga Cove!!
google avatar

Pamela R.

Yelp
This is NOT, I repeat NOT a hike. It is a trail down to the beach, which is beautiful and I would go again only for the beach part. My friends and I have been going on weekly hikes and decided to give this "hiking" trail a try. We were so disappointed when it was an under 10 min walk. What we did get out of it was some fun little mermaid pictures on the beautiful giant rocks connected to the water.

Yelp
Great lil place for a hike with the family and I haven't seen too many snakes around the area.

Yelp
A beautiful place to watch sunsets, surf, go for walks, and cycling. :D

Sameyah M.

Yelp
It's beautiful watching the sun sink into the ocean at sunset! It's not as cool in the morning because it was super cloudy. Plenty of people jog and surf around here. This shouldn't even be in the "hiking" category. It's a five minute stroll to the bottom of the hill.

Lonise M.

Yelp
I LOVE it here! When I was younger, this was me, my Sisters & my Dads getaway & it's also where my Grandpa took my Dad when he was younger as well
google avatar

Cindy B.

Yelp
This is the best hiking trail in LA in my opinion. Gorgeous views, many trails and not that many people compares to Pacific Palisades one. make sure to grab a lot of water and wear sunscreen. The beach down the hil is private so save the time and don't even try to go there unless you are ok with walking on Private Property.

Yelp
Started coming here as a child with my Mother and Grandmother , loved it then and I love it now .
google avatar

Yelp
Great hiking spot with beautiful views. It doesn't take long to go through the whole loop, and there's a good French cafe when you get back to the parking lot.

Yelp
It's been about 10 years since I've done a scuba dive here. There was plenty of parking. The walk down to the beach with full scuba gear was not bad. There are no facilities there, plan accordingly
