We visited just after New Year on a Saturday and were genuinely blown away by how scenic this area is. We approached Malham Cove via the path from Gordale Scar, which I would highly recommend. It makes for a really pleasant walk and feels much more gradual. I can imagine the steps up from the main Cove side being quite tough for anyone not used to a lot of climbing.
Once at the top, the views are absolutely stunning and well worth the effort. You do need to be careful underfoot though, as the limestone pavement has plenty of gaps and uneven sections, so sturdy footwear is a must. It was also very windy when we visited and the winter chill definitely made itself known, but we found a few sheltered alcoves where we could sit down and enjoy a picnic without being too exposed.
Despite the conditions, it never felt overcrowded and the whole area had a really calm, peaceful atmosphere. It feels like a great spot for families and casual walkers, as long as you take your time and stay aware of your footing.
If you are planning a visit, I would strongly recommend doing the full circular route starting at Janet’s Foss, then heading to Gordale Scar and finishing at Malham Cove. It gives you a bit of everything and really shows off how special this part of the Yorkshire Dales is.
