The 6 Best Hostels in Panama City, Panama

"One of the longest-running and most popular budget hostels in the city, I found Mamallena to be social (but not a party hostel) with lots of common areas, a swimming pool with its own pool bar, and a fully equipped kitchen. Beds are basic but AC runs at night for better sleep in humid Panama, staff are very helpful, luggage can be stored for up to three weeks, and the resident dog, Choco, adds a welcoming touch." - Matthew Kepnes

Staying at this hostel was an absolute delight! The staff were incredibly welcoming and went above and beyond to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. The amenities were top-notch, from clean and cozy rooms to a well-equipped common area perfect for relaxing or mingling with fellow travelers. The real stars of the place, however, were the resident dogs and cats! They were so friendly and added a warm, homely vibe to the entire experience. Whether you’re a pet lover or just looking for a cozy and inviting place to stay, this hostel is a must-visit. I can't wait to return!

Did what it said in the tin. We enjoyed our stay here, but to be honest, we were flying/bussing in and out of Panama City to do other things so we weren’t looking for a social hostel or to spend hours in the hostel. The kitchen seemed good and staff friendly. They did some laundry for us which went well and our only gripe would be a small misunderstanding with need in a room with a/c - which they fixed for us.

I've been staying here off and on for years. Popular with boater crowd and for those who stay live in different parts of the country when they’re in the city. It generally attracts the more interesting of the backpacker and travelers. A great place to stay at a reasonable prices near the Santos Tomas metro stop and the coast. Some people think the area isn't great but it is fine and safe to walk. A perfectly located hostel.

Way better than expected. The ratings don't do it justice. This place deserves better than 8/10. AC was available in the rooms for 12 hours from 21:00-09:00am. The kitchen was large, clean and well equipped and the premises was duel secured. The neighbourhood is quite bad though, so after dark it is best not to walk - this is not an exaggeration. The pool, though small, was clean and the outdoor area charming enough. WiFi was decent and there are many places to chill and socialise including workstations with outlets and a table-tennis area. The bathrooms were clean, though there is no hot water (you wouldn't need nor want it) and tours are available should such interest you. Laundry (no kg limit) was a fair $5.00. Note, there are 3 dogs and 3 cats for those with allergies or animal phobias. All-round, an excellent place to stay, 35 minutes walk from the historic district and 5 minutes walk from the large supermarket 'Rey'. Would recommend 100%.

stayed here one night on a layover. staff was super friendly. rooms were actually pretty spacious. the whole hostel was very warm, but the rooms had a/c so it was mostly comfortable, just a little warm on the top bunk when going to bed. lots of hangout areas and a nice kitchen. the friendly dogs were the cherry on top.

Not great. Room lacked amenities (hand towels, bath mats) and had problems with water supply. Overnight AC was nice. Not sure why they allow dogs to sleep in the hostel as they bark in the morning which is impossible to sleep through. Location is pretty bleak, other than one or two convenience stores nearby. Wifi, while free, was poor. There a better hostels at similar price points.

Brilliant hostel for a great price. Staff are all so lovely and excellent English is spoken. The kitchen is very well equipped. The garden is a really nice place to chill, plus there's a little pool. The beds were comfy and, despite the location close to everything, no outside noise disturbed us at night. The air conditioning between 9pm and 9am was glorious. A great night's sleep was had. WiFi was really good too. Also there are dogs and cats and I love dogs and cats :)

I had a really good stay for a very affordable price. Rooms have ac and windows. Multiple toilets and bathrooms spread around the hostel. Each bed in the dorms has plugs. Rooms are spacious and some of the bathrooms too. Staff is friendly and helpful. Recommended.
