Yelp
I don't usually complain, but this is offensive! I'm a professional artist and have been a loyal customer to Man Luen Choon for 3 years. I like this shop very much as it offers a comprehensive selection of art supplies. The young gentleman who used to serve me is very friendly and helpful.
Yesterday, I went there for a quote on their mounting service of a 'Hanging Scroll". A bald and bearded, middle-aged man served me. He said he would show me something made of cow horn. I told him that I don't need anything fancy, just the cheapest one will do. My artwork will be shipped to Europe for an exhibition, after that, my art dealer would probably cut it out and frame it according to their style. As an artist, I demand quality craftsmanship that wouldn't ruin my works. Then he yelled at me in front of other customers, "If you need cheap stuff, we don't want your business. Go to Shenzhen! You can do it for a hundred bucks." He waved his hands as a gesture of telling me to "Go away!" and refused to give me a quote. He repeated that they didn't want my business in front of other customers. My husband finally said, "Does it cost over $10,000? If so, we don't want it." This guy finally gave me a quote by looking at a chart. It took just a few minutes.
I find that extremely insulting and disrespectful! I have been treated well by galleries and clients throughout the USA and Europe. This is definitely a "cultural shock" for me as a Chinese-American who speaks fluent Cantonese!
