Mandarin Oriental, Munich

"This nineteenth-century neo-Renaissance stucco building near Maximilianstrasse is in a great location for walking or biking the city. Rooms have views of the city’s red roofs, cherrywood furniture in the style of the neo-Biedermeier period, and cream, gold, and brown hues. Inlaid French and Italian marble floors welcome guests upon entry, while the lobby, in tones of lavender, terra-cotta, and brown, has a number of original Biedermeier furnishings. Restaurant Mark’s serves Asian-inflected Mediterranean dishes."

The Best Things to Do in Munich, From River Surfing to Fine Art Museums

"The Mandarin Oriental, Munich has the sexiest cocktail bar in town in the form of Orly, bright airy rooms, and a roof garden for summertime mahjong."

"Mandarin Oriental Munich Built into a medieval city wall, the Mandarin Oriental immediately impresses with a lobby and reception area dominated by two grand staircases. The rooms are no less dramatic, with elegant gold-and-cream color schemes, cherry-wood desks, Italian marble floors, and bathrooms large enough to have walk-in showers as well as deep tubs. Fine-art prints and etchings decorate the walls, while tasteful yet trendy amenities like Samsung TVs, Bose speakers, and yoga mats make guests feel right at home. Most rooms have views of Munich’s red roofs, but some apartment-sized suites have balconies overlooking the entire city. Up on the roof, there’s The Terrace restaurant, where guests can enjoy Mediterranean cuisine and breathtaking panoramas. Matsuhisa serves Peruvian and Japanese cuisine and has a dedicated sushi bar, while neighboring Ory offers hip cocktails and fine wines. The hotel is also conveniently located near some of Munich’s top sights, from the Hofbräuhaus beer hall to high-end shopping street Maximilianstraße and historic Marienplatz square."

9 Munich Hotels We Love

"Despite being part of the Mandarin Oriental family of hotels, the Munich outpost feels more like a boutique property, with 48 rooms and 25 suites designed in the brand’s signature Eastern-influenced aesthetic. It’s located in the Old Town right next to the famous Hofbraühaus beer hall, a great (albeit touristy) place to eat and drink; though for a fine-dining experience, you might want to try the hotel’s Matsuhisa restaurant, part of chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s empire." - Stefanie Waldek

Mandarin Oriental Munich (Munich, Bavaria) 2 Hotel Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Despite its distinctly old-fashioned appearance, this is, perhaps, Munich's most sophisticated hotel. Small and discreet, the Mandarin Oriental is still widely referred to by its old name, the Rafael, though this 19th century building was only converted to a hotel in 1990. This is probably due to the fact that many of the guests have been devotees since the hotel since it first opened, and often come several times a year (Zubin Mehta stays here every time he conducts the Opera series). Evidently, they all like the fruit on check-in, the newspaper in the morning, and the extremely familiar, extremely friendly faces of the concierge and the barman. An added bonus - everything in the mini bar is on the house. And the food, by the way, is absolutely sensational. Should you find yourself burnt out — as many visitors to Germany do — on bratwurst and strudel, escape downstairs to Matsuhisa, Munich, first of its kind in the country. Its Japanese-Peruvian fusion plates pair particularly well with the adventurous cocktails and champagne offerings at Bar31. Your physical surroundings aren't so shabby either. The air is redolent with the many flowers strewn throughout. The Mandarin Oriental prides itself on its collection of prints and etchings, which includes several from its former namesake, the Italian painter Raphael himself. Real antiques decorate rooms that are architecturally quirky in a way unique to buildings over a century old. Like Prince Charles, you might want to sleep in room 608, which features a sitting room in a turret, and will make you feel like Rapunzel. Some say it's the location - walking distance from anything you would possibly want to see in Munich, the Opera, the Marienplatz, shopping, and the Maximilianstrasse. Some say it's the nice pianist at the piano bar. But others say, hands down, that it's the terrace on the roof with its garden and heated pool from which you can see the Alps." - Tablet Hotels

It is my 1st time to stay in this hotel. They provide a very good service to me because I am the silk member of Mandarin Oriental hotel. They provides many hotel privileges to me include late check out, room upgrade, 100 US dollars dining credit, free breakfast. The room is very very nice. I enjoy here just 1 night but I feel very good. Excellent ! The breakfast is yummy and many choices for me to eat. Finally they can provide transportation service to Starnberg that is very convenient for me. Big thanks ! This hotel is very close to many shopping malls and historical sights. I recommend all stay here when you travel munich !

We enjoyed our room and the balcony. The hotel was very nice. We did enjoy the vegan pancakes but would have loved to see more vegan options on the menus for breakfast, lunch, dinner. The staff and doormen were all very pleasant and the concierge was very helpful. We did enjoy the rooftop pool and the sushi lounge but would have liked to have more menu options in the afternoon- there was a period of no food available due to checks on rest - a hotel of this caliber should have shifts of chefs to let their clients have access to food at all times

I wanted to extend my heartfelt thanks for the wonderful stay my family and I had at your hotel recently. The service was truly exceptional, and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our stay. A special thank you goes out to Ms. Jannah, whose warm smile and welcoming attitude made us feel right at home. I would also like to thank Mr. Munsif for his outstanding service. Overall, our experience was beyond excellent, and we truly appreciated the care and attention to detail. Thank you once again for making our stay so memorable.

We stayed at the Mandarin Oriental Munich for 5 nights, and it was a deeply disappointing experience from start to finish — especially given the hotel’s reputation and price point.||Before arrival, I specifically requested a very quiet room as I am sleep-sensitive. Upon checking in at 9 PM, I was given a room where the main light behind the bed was not functioning. When I asked about the dimness, the front desk staff member dismissed it by saying this was the “vibe” of the hotel. I’ve stayed here before and knew that was simply not true. When I pointed this out, there was no apology or even acknowledgment that I’d been misled.||While maintenance tried to resolve the lighting issue, we attempted to order room service — only to be told the kitchen was “over capacity” and we’d need to wait over an hour for a sandwich. And the main restaurant was FULL. I was traveling with a child, and with no viable options, I had to go out in the pouring rain at 9.30 PM to find food. This is absolutely not the level of service one should expect from a five-star property.||Despite raising concerns, we had to sleep in the dark room that night — which was also very noisy in the morning, we had requested for a quiet room in our original booking. The next day, they moved us to another room, which was an improvement, but unfortunately the problems didn’t end there.||I sent five pieces of clothing to the laundry with a clear, time-specific agreement to have them returned the next day — my child had no clean clothes. Not only did the clothes not arrive on time, but the staff then claimed they had already been delivered and left in the room — which they clearly had not. This was incredibly frustrating and once again, dishonest.||It was only at the time of checkout, after I became visibly upset and demanded answers, that the clothes were suddenly “found.” It felt like only my persistence forced any resolution.||To summarize: this stay was a string of mishandled issues, broken promises, and at times, outright dishonesty from hotel staff. For a property under the Mandarin Oriental name, this was simply unacceptable. I’ve received more competent and honest service at far more modest hotels. Until this property makes serious improvements in management and service, I would strongly advise others to stay elsewhere.

All I can say about the MO is it is over the top in every way. The room was luxurious with plenty of room for our many suitcases. The bed was wonderful. The staff was friendly and helpful in every way. The room included a stocked minibar which was included in the room price. |Breakfast was included since we booked through American Express Travel. They offered an amazing assortment of wonderful food plus the ability to order from a menu.|Just a top notch organization.

Google
10/10 recommend this hotel! Great location and couldn't be a more hospitable experience. From welcome drinks, to surprises for our kids in the room, to full-service concierge, I was amazed by the level of service at this hotel. The breakfast was wonderful and the rooms were gorgeous and had lots of nice amenities (heated floors, hair straightener, yoga mat, in desk charging, etc.) We traveled with two toddlers who the staff made feel comfortable and welcome. Will definitely be returning to a Mandarin Oriental in the future!!

Google
We loved staying at the Mandarin! It was wonderful. Thank you for making our anniversary so special! The wonderful treats and champagne were such a lovely surprise. Everyone from the men greeting us at the door, reception and restaurant and bar staff went above and beyond. One night we were leaving for dinner and one of the gentleman ran out and gave us an umbrella just in case it rained. It meant a lot to us to have everyone there looking out for us. Also, with the construction it made things harder for the staff but they made things as pleasant as they could and we appreciated that. The Mandarin is out absolute favorite hotel and I hope we can come back.

Google
This was our first time staying at a Mandarin Oriental, and the Munich location absolutely exceeded our expectations. From the moment we were picked up at the airport to our arrival at the hotel, everything was seamless. We were greeted by the bellman by name, and the front desk staff made us feel instantly welcome. The room was outstanding — beautifully designed, quiet, and extremely comfortable. What really stood out was the concierge team, who went above and beyond to help us arrange tours and ensure all our plans were on track. The service throughout our stay was truly exceptional. The breakfast buffet in the hotel restaurant was outstanding and the wait staff are amazing! We also ate dinner at Matsuhisa and the food was delicious. We’re already looking forward to coming back! Highly recommend!

Yelp
I mean it really felt like staying at an amazing hotel where you truly feel so special. So this hotel is located in the heart of Munich literally right by the Marienplatz. The customer service was extremely professional and fantastic. The room was immaculate and comfortable. The mattress was definitely one the best I have slept on in hotels and toiletries were top notch. Super clean. The lobby is stunning and so inviting. The roof top is a great spot to see the city and if you can enjoy their afternoon tea it's great and definitely great way to unwind the afternoon. Also Matsuhisha restaurant by Nobu has fantastic sushi. Overall great staff running a great show. It was my first time staying with them definitely they made it memorable. You truly are getting everything and more for what you are paying.

Yelp
Make sure you make a reservation at the rooftop if you are not a guest at the hotel to be able to check out these stunning views of downtown Munich! This rooftop by far has the best views of the city. The rooftop on top of the hotel is called Munich Sushi Club - you can dine up here but we just came for drinks. Cocktails are €20 each - on the pricey side but for these views it's worth it.

Yelp
Beautiful property in excellent condition, but for these prices things have to be perfect -- and for me they weren't. I reserved a Mandarin King room which was advertised as having high ceiling with great views. My room was on the 7th floor -- not accessible via the elevator -- you need to take the elevator to 6 and walk up a double flight of stairs, schlepping your bags, to get to your room. Once you catch your breath, you walk in and realize you're on the top floor with tiny windows and in-sloping walls. Once the initial claustrophobia fades, you undergo a process something akin to the 5 stages of dying: denial, anger, bargaining, and such. Then, questioning your own sanity, you re-check the hotel website and confirm that your room type is marketed as offering "high ceilings" and shows pictures of bright, lovely rooms, not the attic closet where Edward Rochester locked his ex-wife in Jane Eyre. Oh, and the website pictures had sitting areas with love seats in them. Imagine you want to do some entertaining: Hi, come in. Please sit on the uh bed. No. I found the front desk were rude. I was interrupted before I could explain the situation. They told me they'd call back and didn't within about an hour. I called them. Got interrupted again. For this I'm paying over 1200 Euros a night? They're nicer at the Marriott. Finally, I ended up working with a nice chap named Alex. While did a great job fixing the problem, the catch was they didn't have a room that resembled the one on the website so they had to upgrade me -- at my expense. An extra 180 Euros a night. Since I was tired, I just paid it but wow, what a faux pas. If the hotel can't deliver a room that looks like the picture, then the "upgrade" (back to what I thought you bought) should be on their nickel, not mine. The lobby lounge is very nice. While it doesn't look restaurant-y they do serve food (I had a lovely schnitzel with white asparagus), serve beer, and have a nice-looking whisky cabinet that I left for another day. Room service wise, I ordered a few things. The currywurst (the only sausage on the menu) was not great but I have no idea if that's because I don't like currywurst or it was a bad version. It was lukewarm, again not sure if intended or not. But I had high hopes which were let down. (Maybe have some kaisekraner or more accessible fare?) Breakfast was slightly above a disaster. See picture. 1400 Euros a night and we can't ... poach an egg? So unless hard-boiled Eggs Benedict is a thing in Germany, then it was bad. Hash browns were cold. If you're still reading, this as much a reflection on this ultra-high-end hotel brands as it is on Mandarin Oriental as it is on this specific hotel. Once every year or so often I try one and it's consistently not worth it. If you like to be surrounded by fancy people, see Bugatti's parked out front, and hear your surname a lot, come. If you'd prefer a room that matches the room description, elevators that go to all floors, poached eggs that aren't hard boiled, hash browns and currywursts that aren't lukewarm, then well, go elsewhere. It's my first time trying this brand and it's likely to be my last.

Yelp
I'm not a fan! At dinner last week, rooftop Sushi Club restaurant manager Konstantin accosted my wife after she returned to our table from the restroom. He did not recognize her even though we were seated at our table for 3 hours, and we were the only Asian couple in the house. He stopped my wife as she approached our table and asked, "hey where are you going?" He could have waited 3 seconds and resolved that she didn't walk off the street without a reservation. Then our server left for the evening without putting in our order of dessert. If I had to give 1 star - it would be for the view.

Yelp
Customer service is best in Munich. Katsuhisa is simply phenomenal. Order everything but bring your checkbook. Great martinis and beautiful lounges and corridors make you want to stay in all day (weather does too). Americans will feel at home at this swanky rest stop.

Mark And Anne B.

Yelp
2 terrible experiences. One with breakfast where I was totally forgotten- had to flag down a server to order. 30 minutes later got the bill, including breakfast I had NOT received. Oh, had to fetch my own salt and pepper also. Finale: NO ONE ever asked me if if needed anything (the salt and pepper or even a 2nd cup of coffee!) #crappyservice SAME day, ate at Matsuhisa, ordered only 4 items. Received 3, but, you guessed it, got the bill for all. Matsuhisa food was excellent but couldn't I have gotten the sashimi also?

Yelp
Classy. Gorgeous place. Beautiful view from the rooftop! A great place to see the sunset. We had cocktails but didn't eat. The food looked great though.

Yelp
Simply perfect.... nothing else to say. I am a huge fan of the Mandarin Oriental chain and this hotel is for me definitely one of the best choices in Munich

Yelp
Very classy, the staff addresses you by name when you walk in. The hotel is 5 star for a reason! The hotel is centrally located and very clean. Order room service for breakfast. This is the best hotel in Munich!

Yelp
The Mandarin Oriental is a five star hotel located in the center of Munich a few steps away from Marienplatz and a short walk to the U-Bahn and S-Bahn; and is by far, the best hotel in Munich for many reasons including their staff who always greet their guests in a friendly and professional manner; the elegant, warm and inviting ambience of the lobby, the spacious comfortable rooms, and (of course) Nobu Matsuhisa's restaurant on the second level. You cannot go wrong staying at the MO in Munich.

Yelp
Do it. Worth every little bit. Stayed for my honeymoon on new years. The staff friendly and welcoming. The hotel was flawless. Breakfast buffet AMAZING... The view from the roof priceless.

Yelp
Located in the heart of Munich, walking distance from Marienplatz and the city center. Granting it is in the main hub, my stay here was wonderful and quiet. First class service as soon as you enter the door. The staff were uber attentive and helpful to all our needs. I could definitely say it was a VIP experience all worth every penny paid. And yes, just if you are in Munich, be sure to go up the rooftop bar of the hotel for a drink or two and enjoy the stunning view of Munich. Time it before sunset to maximize the experience.

Yelp
Matsuhisa enters Germany's culinary world In November 2015, we introduced the award-winning cuisine of internationally celebrated chef Nobuyuki (Nobu) Matsuhisa to the Bavarian capital, and to Germany. The restaurant follows the successful format of the chef's original Matsuhisa Beverly Hills and his five other exclusive outposts around the world. Offering Nobu Matsuhisa's renowned New Style Japanese-Peruvian cuisine the menu has an emphasis on seafood, featuring signature dishes such as the legendary Black Cod and Yellowfin Tuna Sashimi with jalapeños, alongside grilled lamb cooked over tealeaves with Peruvian Anticucho sauce, as well as traditionally prepared sushi. The restaurant offers a semi-private dining section with space for up to 10 guests. In this intimate setting, guests can experience Omakase, a bespoke culinary experience exploring the chef's choice of tailor-made menus. Matsuhisa, Munich will also feature an exclusive eight-seat live cooking counter where skilled chefs will prepare a variety of Nobu's famous Japanese-Peruvian dishes.

Yelp
Lovely place. Spectacular view for the New Years Day fireworks display throughout Munich. Get a room, order room service, be dazzled. Best fireworks show I've ever seen and in amazing comfort.

Yelp
Chose to stay at our first Mandarin Oriental on our journey through Germany this last week and it was terrific. After booking online on hotels.com we entered our room to find it nothing like what we thought we booked (city view suite). I went down to the front desk to just clarify things and was met by Nadia. we determined that it was indeed a problem with hotels.com portrayal of the rooms. She showed us a few other options but we just decided to stay where we were as it wasn't too big of deal. A few minutes later she came up to our room and said they had one other option but we also opted out. A bit later, we got a call from the assistant manner Arian who insisted that he fix the problem although it was not their fault. Needless to say they complimentary upgraded us to the suite which we thought we originally booked. We came back from dinner to a bottle of champagne and hand written note from himself saying that he hoped we enjoyed our stay and experience at the Mandarin. Needless to say, it's this type of customer service that's hard to find these days. They took the initiative to ensure five star satisfaction and that's exactly what we got. I want to give a thanks to Arian, Nadia, and the hotel staff for their professionalism and genuine regards to us and their guests.

Yelp
Fantastic location right in the middle of Munich and near Marienplatz. Most of the tourist sites are within walking distance, so useful. If you need restaurant recommendations, tours and bookings, the concierge are experienced and more than willing to help with anything. I visited in Dec, so unfortunately the rooftop terrace was closed, so there was no pool. Plus their main restaurant was closed for renovations too. So was lacking some facilities. Rooms were nice but a bit on the small side

Yelp
Let's talk about the bad stuff first, I think it's more useful - the wellness, the so called business centre and NO FREE WIFI! When you pay in excess of EUR 600 a night, you'd expect damn well that you get free WIFI, like MOST places in the world. NO! You have to pay extra for the internet?! What bull*ç%& is this??? The Wellness ....is not really a wellness and more of an afterthought. The area, combined with the fitness, was accessible through a door just by the entrance, next to the bank of elevators into the rooms. You walk down the short and narrow corridor and the fitness area (which is tiny enough) is at the end of it. To your right going in, are two closed doors, leading to a private staff-only unknown area and the WC and Steamrooms. You walk into....a box and it's further divided into 3 more boxes: the Turkish steam bath, which you can fit only 2 persons max; 1 shower, 1 person max; the sauna, again 1 person max otherwise you simply can't close the door and the WC..... It was really really pathetic! There was no changing rooms and guests had to walk past the main entrance in their bathrobes to access this area, in front of all other guests milling around. They did not think about how to place this strategically to offer guests some sort of privacy in accessing the area in just their bathrobes and swimwear at all. The Business Centre ....consisted of that one Mac computer next to the lobby, just ONE apparently. Luckily for me, as I had to finish a presentation during my stay there, there was no one occupying the computer at all the whole weekend. Anyway, as nice as the hotel's overall package was, it just was not worth the price and I don't think we will be staying there again, or perhaps any of the Mandarin Oriental hotels....unless it's on a destination where they have their resorts. But for a city hotel, you'd best place your money on boutique hotels to get more value. Now the good parts: The room was so lovely, we were given 214 - high ceilings, large living area (evem though this was just the normal superior room), very spacious bathroom with a bath, shower area and separate toilet. The furnishings were a bit outdated - old style ivory marble (?) with too many veins shot through it, I thought it was rather grotesque. Rather small shower area admittedly, but the towels were sooo thick and fluffy, albeit old. The bedding was just beautiful, so soft and silky and the bed, is actually a decent density - aka, not soft like most hotel beds are, which always gave me a back ache. The service is impeccable here - I requested two separate duvets, which we got. Everyone is so nice and helpful. The reception area was a bit cheap - the whole honey coloured wood looking like it's made of plastic, stuffed into the corner in a large area dominated primarily by the lobby bar there. Each night they had a pianist playing at the lobby bar and transformed the high domed ceiling lobby into something of a magical atmosphere, almost Great Gatsby style.... The breakfast took place in the small Mark's restaurant, the hotel's 1 Michelin star restaurant - the place is lovely, old fashioned with stiff white table cloths and napkins, silver cutlery and fine china, soft muted lighting in the evenings and during the breakfast, the half circular windows afforded bright sunlight in. The breakfast was half continental with the Bavarian twist - in the sense that they served hot white sausages (or wursts) with the honey mustard instead of the usual eggs, bacon and mushrooms. These you can order separately from the menu which is included with the room priced breakfast, including, I was delighted to see, porridge! and pancakes!

Yelp
This was our first stay in a Mandarin Oriental Hotel and it will not be our last. We had a terrific experience. The front desk staff were amazing. All of them were friendly, polite and very knowledgeable when asked questions. We had a standard room and it was lovely. So many little details were thought out. Thank you for a great experience Mandarin Hotel!

Yelp

Yelp
We went here as a group of six and had a great stay. The rooms were great. The service was above and beyond. All staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The location is just a block away from some of the finest shopping we have seen. We arranged a day trip to the Eagle's Nest along with a tour of a bunker and, lastly, a salt mine. All were great. Our driver was extremely knowledgeable. The attention to detail is something you would expect to see in Japan... Actually the first time I stayed at a Mandarin Oriental was in Taipei where there service was also excellent. Definitely coming back here next time I'm in München.

Isenwald ..

Yelp
Near flawless service every time. Rooms are tastefully decorated and the location is very convenient, short stroll to the city centre, shopping street and the Opera.

Kellie L.

Yelp
Amazing. I never knew how good customer service could be until I stayed here. We were in a suite for three nights, and I honestly don't have one complaint. Yes it's pricey, but in this case, you pay for what you get. We arrived much earlier than planned due to a flight change, and the staff couldn't have been more accommodating - our room wasn't quite ready, but they gave us a place to change clothes (it had been a long flight) and comped us beverages in the restaurant. The room was spotless and spacious, and it even included an adapter for our electronics! The bathroom was huge, and I loved the complimentary minibar and fruit upon arrival. We needed the concierge's assistance securing train tickets to Vienna, and - Murphy's Law - Visa decided to put a fraud hold on my credit card as soon as he tried to purchase them. I was super embarrassed, but he and the front desk staff couldn't have been nicer, helping me place an international call and even jokingly (?) offering to let me use their credit card when it didn't work a second time. The hotel breakfast was delicious - the kitchen staff would make anything you wanted, and the buffet included meats, cheeses, pretzels, yogurt, the most delicious muesli I've ever had, fruits, pastries, danishes, etc. I'm getting hungry again just thinking about it! We had dinner one night at Mark's, and the service and food were five star. Our waiters and waitresses remembered us every day, and the bartender knew "my" drink after one day. As others have said, the location is great and within walking distance of the Marienplatz and train station and literally next to the Hofbrauhaus. If you get a higher floor, the view is pretty spectacular, too. Unfortunately, the roof was closed when we were there, but the rest of the hotel was so awesome, I didn't mind.

Yelp
Interresting taste. But nice and good attitude!

Kat C.

Yelp
This review is for their spa. I was shocked for a mandarin oriental property their spa is just a regular room off a hair salon near the street. It could have been the local hairdresser not a spa at all. The woman managing it was beyond rude not just to me but to her young staff. I was appalled to see the girls that work there get so upset over how mean she was to them. This is not expected behavior and they were very apologetic for her. The girl who gave me my massage was very sweet and did a very good job but the rest of the experience left a very bad taste in my mouth for mandarin. I love the mandarin oriental spa in HK it's phenomenal so again was very disappointed in this experience. Oh and when I checked in they led me to a gym not the spa it was really weird and impersonal. There are too many other good spas in Munich for anyone to have to deal with this
