I must admit, I rarely leave reviews for a hotel in such circumstances unless it is truly terrible. Unfortunately, this Mandarin Oriental hotel is a very poor example. I wouldn’t call myself a loyal fan of Mandarin Oriental, but over the past 30 years, I’ve stayed at various Mandarin Oriental hotels dozens of times, and I am also a member. So I believe I can judge this hotel’s performance based on my own experience.
First of all, we arrived at the Mandarin Oriental in Santiago, Chile at 10 a.m. today, but they insisted that I could only get a room at 3 p.m. Although as a member, I would usually have a chance to get a room earlier, I understand this is a reasonable rule, so I waited patiently until three.
From the indifferent attitude of the front desk staff, I already had a feeling things wouldn’t go smoothly today. Sure enough, they messed up my room assignment, and the room I ended up with was not the one I originally booked, so I couldn’t connect to the room’s internet. More importantly, the luggage I checked in upon arrival was delivered to a different room, and it took over an hour to retrieve it.
Since I usually drink a lot of water, I always ask the hotel for extra complimentary bottled water. In my few experiences staying at Mandarin Oriental hotels, this has never been a problem. However, this afternoon, it became a serious issue. First, the room itself did not provide any complimentary bottled water. And the tap water in Santiago is not suitable for direct consumption. Within an hour and a half, I contacted housekeeping three times to request extra water, but there was no response at all. Eventually, it was the staff member at the lobby who answered the phone who personally brought four bottles of water to my room. I was very grateful for his dedication and explained my drinking habits to him. He promised that after the evening turndown service, he would send ten more bottles of water to my room.
After dinner, we returned to the room and found only two complimentary bottles of water. So I called the front desk to inquire. To my surprise, they asked if there was any medical reason that required me to drink so much water.
At that moment, I felt I really could not tolerate it any further. I was shocked that this hotel is the designated hotel for Silver Seas Cruise’s Antarctic journey, and even more puzzled as to how it could be part of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group.
